Lo llaman la isla griega de la costa turquesa, y ya desde el nombre se puede imaginar lo que depara … la dejamos como última parada en nuestro viaje a las Islas Jónicas después de Zakynthos y Kefallonia antes de volar a Atenas y nos sorprendió mucho más de lo que esperábamos. Encontramos muchas cosas que hacer y ver: caminatas, cascadas, excursiones a las islas de los alrededores, un puerto lleno de vida siempre animado y playas de ensueño cuyas aguas transparentes eran en algunos casos casi irreales. Esta semana os traemos la crónica de nuestros días en este lugar tan especial.

 

Lefkada… la gran sorpresa de las Islas Jónicas

Me encanta cuando, por más que piensas que llevas preparado un viaje, de repente el destino se vuelve sorprendente e inesperado. Llevaba tantos años queriendo conocer Zakynthos y su Playa del Naufragio y estábamos tan enamorados de Assos en Kefallonia que subestimé un poco Lefkada  planteándola más bien como un impass de transición entre las islas anteriores y Atenas al contar con un vuelo bastante conveniente desde su aeropuerto de Preveza. Lo que sobre el papel serían unos días de reposo y recarga de pilas se convirtieron en eso y mucho más: nos fuimos con la sensación de que aquel lugar daba para muchos días y escondía mil planes. Espero que este post sirva para que no cometáis el mismo error y deis a Lefkada el lugar que se merece desde el principio, nosotros estuvimos cinco días allí y echamos de menos estar un par de días más: si el tiempo os lo permite lo ideal sería una semana.

Lefkada o Lefkas tiene un aspecto bastante similar a nuestra isla de Menorca con un interior muy verde y montañoso y un total de 117 kms. de costa. Desde su puerto suelen salir a diario barcos y excursiones a las islas cercanas de Itaca, Spati, Maduri o Meganisi, donde todavía se mantiene un estilo de vida sencillo y tradicional.

Para llegar a la isla cogimos el primer ferry (el de las 9:15h, aunque también había otro a la hora de comer) desde el puerto de Fiskardo en Kefallonia que nos dejaba en el Puerto de Nidri en menos de 2h. El precio del ticket eran 8,5€ por persona y si llevabas coche eran unos 35€-40€ más. Nuestro plan inicial era ir desde Kefallonia hasta el puerto de Vasilikí, pero justo durante las fechas que íbamos a estar en las islas esta ruta estaba fuera de funcionamiento así que cambiamos de planes y escogimos Nydri como centro de operaciones. Lefkada tiene también su propio aeropuerto (Aktion, que en realidad está en Preveza, a unos 20 kms. de la capital de la isla), desde el que hay vuelos directos diarios a Atenas, a otras islas griegas como Zakynthos o Corfu, y otros vuelos internacionales.

El trayecto en ferry hasta Lefkada fue increíble y lo disfruté muchísimo, porque íbamos cruzando entre diferentes islotes y la panorámica desde la cubierta superior era preciosa. Justo antes de llegar al puerto de Nidri pasamos delante de la isla de Skorpios, la isla privada en la que en 1968 se celebró la boda entre Jackie Kennedy y Onassis.

 

 

El puerto de Nydri

El ferry atracó en el Puerto de Nydri, justo donde nos íbamos a alojar los primeros días. Nada más bajar, sientes un ambiente muy animado ya que a lo largo del puerto se concentran muchísimos bares y restaurantes con terraza donde tomarte un café o disfrutar tanto de la cocina tradicional griega como de mariscos y pescados recién salidos del mar o todo tipo de opciones de comida internacional. Cuando paseabas frente a ellos siempre te “atacaban“ para que entrases a comer, pero eran muy simpáticos y al final terminabas charlando con ellos y siempre te sacaban alguna sonrisa. A nosotros nos encantaba sentarnos en alguna terraza a la caída de la tarde y ver a la gente pasear. Una de las cosas que más nos llamó la atención de la isla fue la variedad de personas que la visitaban, al contrario que en Zakynthos por ejemplo vimos mucha más cantidad de familias de todas las nacionalidades pero también bastante gente local.

También atracados en el puerto estaban todos los días cientos de barcos y cruceros que realizaban excursiones tanto a las principales playas de la isla: Egremni, Porto Katsiki y Agiofili, como a las islas cercanas. Nosotros queríamos ver si o si las playas (unas de las mejores de Grecia y del Mundo, más difíciles de acceder por tierra), pero esto os lo cuento un poco más adelante.

 

Nydri

Quedarnos en Nydri fue un cambio de planes de ultima hora (nuestra idea inicial era alojarnos en Vasilikí al principio), pero nos encantó haber tomado esa decisión. Nos encontramos un pueblecito encantador, sencillo, con un montón de opciones de ocio y con una mezcla muy equilibrada de tranquilidad y ajetreo según lo que nos apeteciese en cada momento.

Su gran calle central, Epar.Od. Lefkas – Vasilikis, discurre en paralelo al paseo del puerto y junto a éste son los grandes centros neurálgicos en los que comprar, salir, cenar, comer y hasta contratar excursiones. Os dejo algunos de los sitios que más nos gustaron:

• Tranquilo, un lugar perfecto para descansar del ajetreo de Nydri y relajarse tomando algo, comiendo, cenando o incluso disfrutar de su piscina frente al puerto.
• Ola Kala, un sitio peculiar por la simpatía de George que sirve comida tradicional griega a buenos precios justo en la calle central. Sencillo y sin grandes pretensiones, el típico restaurante con manteles de papel pero acogedor y agradable.
• De Blanc Wine & Champagne Bar, con una carta de vinos impresionante, era uno de  nuestros puntos habituales para tomar algo antes de irnos a cenar.
• Dalton’s Grill House, un lugar un poco freak y bastante divertido justo en el puerto decorado con ilustraciones de Lucky Luke y los hermanos Dalton pero donde comer raciones muy copiosas y a buenos precios.

 

 

El pueblo de Nydri cuenta con su propia playa del mismo nombre, bastante accesible y desde mi punto de vista muy bonita por las vistas de las islas que están justo al frente. Es una playa llena de bares y restaurantes e ideal para hacer todo tipo de actividades deportivas.

 

Y en cuanto a nuestro alojamiento, el hecho de haber cambiado la reserva en el ultimo momento hizo que tampoco quedasen demasiados sitios disponibles pero de nuevo fue todo un descubrimiento: no estaba justo en la playa y esto le daba una paz y una tranquilidad especiales, lo mejor era desayunar cada mañana al borde de la piscina y charlar con su propietaria que era encantadora y le gustaba practicar el castellano con nosotros. Se llamaba G George Hotel, de estilo colonial y unas habitaciones preciosas.

Nos hubiese gustado también alojarnos en el Hotel Nydri Beach, pero no había disponibilidad. Estaba justo en la playa y fuimos varias veces a tomar algo a su cafetería, era el típico alojamiento en lo que lo único que te apetece es salir de la habitación para ir a la playa y volver a la habitación, perfecto para descansar. En este caso el precio de la habitación varia muchísimo según la época, pudiendo ser de unos 45€ en primavera y subir hasta los 200€ en pleno Agosto.

Un poco más alejado del centro de Nydri, pero también muy recomendable, está el Sea Mansion:  un edificio de apartamentos super pintoresco al lado del mar regentado por una simpática familia con unas vistas maravillosas y su propia playa privada. El precio de un estudio ronda los 120€ por noche y los apartamentos con balcón los 140€.

 

 

Las cascadas de Nydri

Una excursión muy recomendable si estáis en Nydri es visitar sus cascadas. Era un paseo de unos 3,5 kms. desde nuestro hotel, así que como era pleno Agosto y hacia bastante calor decidimos hacerlo temprano por la mañana nada mas desayunar. Una vez allí, las cascadas eran bastante bonitas aunque no tenían demasiado caudal, el agua está muy fresca por lo que viene fenomenal para refrescarse de la caminata y justo a la entrada había una taberna preciosa, Platanos, con terrazas asomadas a la vegetación donde tomar algo (tienen una carta de limonadas super refrescantes) a la sombra y con el sonido de los cantos de los pájaros.

 

Las Playas

Las playas de Lefkada son una verdadera pasada y muchas de ellas son como piscinas naturales. Destacan especialmente las de la zona sur oeste, rodeadas por acantilados de piedra y arena blanca (Leukós, el nombre griego de la isla, hace referencia a su arena blanca y a los acantilados de tiza blanca conocidos como el Cabo de la Dama y el Salto de Leukade, desde el que se dice que saltó Venus para olvidar la muerte de Adonis), que son el principal aliciente para visitar esta isla.

Desde el puerto de Nydri, cogimos el barco Nikolaos Boat que exploraba las más impresionantes: Porto Katsiki, Egremni y Agiofili, una excursión que duraba desde las 9:30h hasta las 17h con un precio de 24€/ persona y que contratamos con Borsalino Travel justo el día anterior (lo encontraréis en la calle principal de Nydri o entrando por el paseo del Puerto, justo al lado del Restaurante Apollon)

PORTO-KATSIKI

 

Es la playa más popular en Lefkas y algunos la consideran la mejor playa en Grecia, con sus aguas cristalinas y rodeada de acantilados. A nosotros nos pareció preciosa (aunque nos gustó un poco más Egremni por estar mucho menos masificada), y si llegáis por tierra es accesible a través de unos 80 escalones.

EGREMNI

Una playa maravillosa rodeada de colinas y mucho más tranquila que Porto Katsiki, con un agua de tono algo más turquesa y unas vistas impresionantes. Nos costó mucho atracar porque por su situación está bastante expuesta al oleaje, pero una vez allí era un verdadero paraíso. Aquí bajar cuesta un poco más (son unos 250 escalones) y por ello puede que atraiga menos turistas, por lo que llegar en barco fue un verdadero lujo.

 

AGLIOFILI

La tercera playa de la excursión era Agliofili, super bonita y muy pequeña, bastante diferente de las otras dos anteriores. Aquí el color del agua era surrealista y bañarse en ella era un espectáculo. La contrapartida de ser tan reducida es que enseguida se llena de gente, pero sin duda es un lugar que merece la pena visitar.

 

KATHISMA

Fuera ya de la excursión, otra de las playas más alucinantes de la isla es Kathisma, en la costa oriental y a unos 14 kms. de Lefkas Town. Super exótica, de arena fina y blanca y agua de tonos turquesa. Lo que más destaca en ella son sus características formaciones rocosas y cuevas, y es un lugar ideal para ver la puesta de sol.

 

MILOS BEACH, AGIOS NIKITAS, PEFKOULIA Y AGIOS IOANNIS

Milos Beach es otro de los platos fuertes de Lefkas, una playa a la que es mejor llegar en barco desde la localidad de Agios Nikitas que también tiene una playa bastante bonita y pintoresca. Justo al lado de Agios Nikitas está Pefkoulia, que suele estar abarrotada de gente por sus aguas azules e impecables. Pero si preferís una playa más tranquila os recomiendo Agios Ioannis, a tan solo 2 kms. de la capital, bastante popular para practicar deportes acuáticos como el Windsurf o el Kite Surf.

 

 

Vasilikí

El pueblo de Vasilikí es un lugar precioso que si o si queríamos conocer de Lefkadas. Estaba justo en el Sur de la isla y su ubicación era perfecta a muy poca distancia de la playa de Agiofili. Esta aldea era bastante popular entre los surfistas por una playa enorme abierta al Mediterráneo, y estaba salpicada de casas coloridas, tabernas y restaurantes, y rodeada de naturaleza. La playa no era de arena, sino de gravilla, pero las aguas eran limpias y transparentes.

Si visitáis Vasilikí, estos son los lugares que no os podéis perder:

• 155 Café Bar, uno de los bares más populares de la zona frecuentado tanto por locales como por turistas ideal para tomar un mojito acompañado de música jazz por la tarde o de música griega de fondo por la noche.
• Tunnel Bar, un bar escondido en una callejuela de la ciudad frente a la tienda Ambrosia con música de los 70 y de los 80 y de ambiente similar a una típica taberna irlandesa.
• Fabric Shop, una tiendecita donde todo son productos hechos en Grecia con cosas chulísimas: sombreros, foutas, pashminas, alpargatas, accesorios…
• Almathea, una taberna para disfrutar de la comida local pero sobre todo de sus impresionantes vistas a la bahía.
• Yannis, ideal para una comida o cena rápida, era una solución perfecta para tomar el típico gyros sin complicaciones acompañada de unas cervezas en pleno puerto de Vasilikí.

 

Nuestro hotel se llamaba Grand TheoNi y estaba a pocos pasos tanto del puerto como de la playa. Tenía una pequeña piscina ideal para refrescarse del calor sofocante de Agosto y servía un desayuno bastante bueno cada mañana en su terraza. De estilo bastante moderno y rollo boutique, era una de las opciones más atractivas de la zona, por un precio bastante interesante de 60€ la noche.

Pero también miramos un hotel justo a la orilla de la playa, que no pudimos reservar por estar completo. Si vais a Vassiliki, miradlo con tiempo porque merece bastante la pena: el Sunwaves Hotel, con 15 habitaciones acogedoras y ambiente familiar. Nos comentaron que el yogur del desayuno era espectacular y que los propietarios eran super amables. Para consultar precios tenéis que poneros en contacto con ellos directamente.

 

 

Leúcade/ Lefkada Town

Dedicamos uno de los días a conocer la bulliciosa capital de Lefkada, Lefkada Town – también conocida como Hora – , reconstruida tras los terremotos de 1948 y 1953. Nos sorprendió muchísimo su estilo caribeño, sus casitas de madera de colores y la alegría que inundaba sus calles. Nos encantó pasear por su calle central peatonal y descubrir sus tiendas, bares y restaurantes, y echamos de menos no haber tenido un par de días para descubrir mejor tanto sus rincones y disfrutar un poco más de las increíbles playas de los alrededores como Agios Ioannis. En su interior, destaca el Castillo Medieval de Santa Maura con sus almenas desde las que asomarse al canal, el puente flotante que une la isla con la península, el Museo Arqueológico , el Pantazis Contomihis o Museo del folklore del club de Música y Literatura de Orfeas de Lefkada o el mercado de la céntrica plaza de Marka y las iglesias de la ciudad entre las que destaca la Iglesia de Pantokrator en cuyo cementerio uno puede ver la tumba del poeta griego Aristotelis Valariotis. Para finalizar, no olvidéis dar un paseo por alguno de los jardines de la ciudad como el Parque de los Poetas, donde en verano se celebran conciertos de la Sociedad Filarmónica.

Pero creo que sacamos bastante partido de la visita, y aquí os dejo nuestros descubrimientos:

• Frini Sto Molo, una taberna en el puerto con una terraza que da al muelle, con una mousaka espectacular y mariscos y pescados frescos.
• Sea to See, un bar ideal para tomar el aperitivo o un Cocktail a la puesta de sol
• Taverna Eutuxia 1960, una taberna local pequeña en la que sirven platos caseros siguiendo recetas tradicionales que están para chuparse los dedos.
• Ciao, una heladería artesanal que abre a partir de las 18h en la zona peatonal que cada día te sorprende con un nuevo sabor como el de mastiha, un licor dulce que dicen que ayuda a asentar el estómago tras la comida, o el sorbete de mango (mi favorito!)
• Joy Bar, un bar pequeñito que sirve cocktails y smoothies en un ambiente acogedor y familiar.

They call it the Greek island of the turquoise coast, and from the name you can imagine what it holds … we left it as the last stop on our trip to the Ionian Islands after Zakynthos and Kefallonia before flying to Athens and we were surprised much more than we expected. We found much to do and see: hiking, waterfalls, excursions to the surrounding islands, a port full of life always lively and above all a dreamy beaches whose transparent waters were in some cases almost impossible. This week we bring you the chronicle of our days in this special place.

 

Lefkada… the great surprise of the Ionian Islands

I love when, as much as you think you have prepared a trip, suddenly the destination becomes surprising and unexpected. He had wanted to know for many years Zakynthos and its Shipwreck Beach and we were so in love with Assos in Kefallonia that I underestimated Lefkada a bit, considering it rather like a transitional impass between the previous islands and Athens, having a very convenient flight from its Preveza airport. What on paper would be a few days of rest and battery recharge became that and much more: we left with the feeling that this place was for many days and hid a thousand plans. I hope that this post serves so that you do not make the same mistake and give Lefkada the place he deserves from the beginning, we spent five days there and we miss being a couple of days longer: if time allows, the ideal would be one week.

Lefkada or Lefkas looks quite similar to our island of Menorca with a very green and mountainous interior and a total of 117 kms. of coast. From its port, ships and excursions to the nearby islands of Itaca, Spati, Maduri or Meganisi leave daily, where a simple and traditional way of life is still maintained.

To get to the island we took the first ferry (the one at 9:15, although there was another one at lunch time) from the port of Fiskardo in Kefallonia that left us at the Port of Nidri in less than 2h. The ticket price was € 8.5 per person and if you were driving a car it was € 35 – € 40 more. Our initial plan was to go from Kefallonia to the port of Vasilikí, but just during the dates that we were going to be in the islands this route was out of operation so we changed plans and chose Nydri as the operations center. Lefkada also has its own airport (Aktion International Airport, which is actually in Preveza, about 20 km from the capital of the island), from which there are daily direct flights to Athens, to other Greek islands such as Zakynthos or Corfu, and others international flights.

The ferry ride to Lefkada was amazing and I really enjoyed it, because we were crossing between different islets and the view from the upper deck was beautiful. Just before reaching the port of Nidri, we passed the island of Skorpios, the private island where the wedding between Jackie Kennedy and Onassis took place in 1968.

 

 

Nydri Port

The ferry docked at the Port of Nydri, right where we were going to stay the first days. Nothing else to lower, you feel a very animated atmosphere since along the port there are many bars and restaurants with terrace where you can have a coffee or enjoy both the traditional Greek cuisine and seafood and fresh from the sea or all kinds of options of international food. When you walked in front of them they always «attacked» you so you could go to eat, but they were very nice and in the end you ended up chatting with them and they always made you smile. We loved to sit on a terrace at nightfall and watch people walk by. One of the things that caught our attention was the variety of people who visited it, unlike in Zakynthos for example we saw much more families of all nationalities but also enough local people.

Also docked in the port were hundreds of boats and cruises every day that made excursions to the main beaches of the island: Egremni, Porto Katsiki and Agiofili, as well as the nearby islands. We wanted to see if or if the beaches (some of the best in Greece and the World, harder to access by land), but this I tell you a little later.

 

Nydri

Staying in Nydri was a last minute change of plans (our initial idea was to stay in Vasilikí at the beginning), but we were delighted to have made that decision. We are a charming, simple village, with a lot of leisure options and with a very balanced mix of tranquility and hustle and bustle according to what we want at any time.

Its great central street, Epar.Od. Lefkas – Vasilikis, runs parallel to the harbor promenade and next to it are the major nerve centers in which to buy, go out, dine, eat and even hire excursions. I leave some of the sites that we liked:

• Tranquilo, a perfect place to rest from the hustle and bustle of Nydri and relax with a drink, lunch, dinner or even enjoy your pool in front of the harbor.
• Ola Kala, a quirky place because of George’s sympathy that serves traditional Greek food at good prices right on the central street. Simple and without great pretensions, the typical restaurant with paper tablecloths but cozy and pleasant.
• De Blanc Wine & Champagne Bar, with an impressive wine list, it was one of our usual places to have a drink before going to dinner.
• Dalton’s Grill House,  a place a bit freaky and quite fun right in the harbor decorated with illustrations of Lucky Luke and the Dalton brothers but where to eat very copious portions and at good prices.

 

The town of Nydri has its own beach of the same name, quite accessible and from my point of view very beautiful because of the views of the islands that are right in front. It is a beach full of bars and restaurants and ideal for all kinds of sports activities.

 

And as for our accommodation, the fact of having changed the reservation at the last moment did not leave too many places available but again it was a discovery: it was not right on the beach and this gave it a special peace and tranquility, the best thing was to have breakfast every morning at the edge of the pool and chat with the owner who was lovely and liked to practice Spanish with us. It was called G George Hotel, colonial style and with beautiful rooms.

We would have liked to also stay in the Nydri Beach Hotel, but there was no availability. It was right on the beach and we went several times to have a drink at their cafeteria, it was the typical accommodation in which the only thing you want is to leave the room to go to the beach and return to the room, perfect to rest. In this case the price of the room varies a lot according to the season, being able to be about € 45 in the spring and go up to € 200 in August.

A little further away from the center of Nydri, but also highly recommended, is the Sea Mansion:  a picturesque house by the sea run by a nice family with wonderful views and its own private beach. The price of a studio is around € 120 per night and apartments with a balcony are € 140.

 

 

Nydri Waterfalls

A highly recommended excursion if you are in Nydri is to visit its waterfalls. It was a walk of about 3.5 kms. from our hotel, so as it was full August and it was quite hot we decided to do it early in the morning as soon as we had breakfast. Once there, the waterfalls were quite beautiful although they did not have much flow, the water is very cool so it is great to cool off from the walk and right at the entrance was a beautiful tavern, Platanos, with terraces overlooking the vegetation where to take something (they have a letter of super refreshing lemonade) in the shade and with the sound of the songs of the birds.

 

Beaches

The beaches of Lefkada are awesome and many of them are like natural pools. Particularly noteworthy are those of the south west area, surrounded by stone cliffs and white sand (Leukós, the Greek name for the island, refers to its white sand and the white chalk cliffs known as the Cabo de la Dama and the Salto de Leukade, from which it is said that Venus jumped to forget the death of Adonis), which are the main incentive to visit this island.

From the port of Nydri, we took the boat Nikolaos Boat that explored the most impressive: Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Agiofili, an excursion that lasted from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm with a price of 24 € / person and that we contracted with Borsalino Travel the previous day (you will find it on the main street of Nydri or entering the Paseo del Puerto, right next to the Apollon Restaurant)

PORTO-KATSIKI

It is the most popular beach in Lefkas and some consider it the best beach in Greece, with its crystal clear waters and surrounded by cliffs. We thought it was beautiful (although we liked Egremni a bit more because it is much less crowded), and if you arrive by land, it is accessible through about 80 steps.

EGREMNI

A wonderful beach surrounded by hills and much quieter than Porto Katsiki, with a slightly more turquoise tone water and stunning views. It was very difficult for us to dock because, due to its location, it is quite exposed to the waves, but once there it was a true paradise. Here, it costs a little more to go down (it’s about 250 steps) and therefore it may attract fewer tourists, so arriving by boat was a success.

 

AGLIOFILI

The third beach of the tour was Agliofili, super nice and very small, quite different from the other two before. Here the color of the water was surreal and to bathe in it was a spectacle. The downside of being so small is that it immediately fills with people, but it is definitely a place worth visiting.

 

KATHISMA

Out of the excursion, another of the most amazing beaches on the island is Kathisma, on the eastern coast and about 14 kms. from Lefkas Town. Super exotic, with fine white sand and turquoise water. What stands out most in it are its characteristic rock formations and caves, and it is an ideal place to watch the sunset.

 

MILOS BEACH, AGIOS NIKITAS, PEFKOULIA Y AGIOS IOANNIS

Milos Beach is another of the highlights of Lefkas, a beach that is best reached by boat from the town of Agios Nikitas which also has a pretty and picturesque beach. Right next to Agios Nikitas is Pefkoulia, which is usually crowded with its impeccable blue waters. But if you prefer a quieter beach I recommend Agios Ioannis, only 2 kms. from the capital, quite popular for water sports such as Windsurf or Kite Surf.

 

 

Vasilikí

The town of Vasilikí is a beautiful place that if or if we wanted to know about Lefkadas. It was right on the south of the island and its location was perfect within walking distance of the Agiofili beach. This village was popular with surfers for a huge beach open to the Mediterranean, and was dotted with colorful houses, taverns and restaurants, and surrounded by nature. The beach was not sand, but gravel, but the waters were clean and transparent.

If you visit Vasilikí, these are the places you can not miss:

• 155 Cafe Bar, one of the most popular bars in the area frequented by locals and tourists alike, ideal for a mojito accompanied by jazz music in the afternoon or Greek music in the evening.
• Tunnel Bar,  a bar hidden in a side street of the city in front of the Ambrosia store with music from the 70s and 80s and with an atmosphere similar to a typical Irish tavern.
• Fabric Shop, a little shop where everything is made in Greece with very cool things: hats, foutas, pashminas, espadrilles, accessories …
• Almathea, a tavern to enjoy the local food but especially its impressive views of the bay.
• Yannis,
• ideal for a quick lunch or dinner, it was a perfect solution to take the typical gyros without complications accompanied by a few beers in the port of Vasilikí.

 

Our hotel was called Grand TheoNi  and it was a few steps from both the harbor and the beach. It had a small pool ideal to cool off from the suffocating August heat and served a pretty good breakfast each morning on its terrace. With a very modern style and a boutique roll, it was one of the most attractive options in the area, for a very interesting price of € 60 per night.

But we also looked at a hotel right on the edge of the beach, which we could not reserve because it was complete. If you go to Vassiliki, look at it in time because it’s worth it: Sunwaves Hotel, with 15 cozy rooms and family atmosphere. We were told that the breakfast yogurt was spectacular and that the owners were super friendly. To consult prices you have to contact them directly.

 

 

Leúcade/ Lefkada Town

We spent one of the days getting to know the bustling capital of Lefkada, Lefkada Town – also known as Hora -, rebuilt after the earthquakes of 1948 and 1953. We were very surprised by its Caribbean style, its colored wooden houses and the joy that flooded its walls. streets. We loved strolling through its central pedestrian street and discovering its shops, bars and restaurants, and we missed not having had a couple of days to better discover both its corners and enjoy a little more of the amazing beaches of the surroundings such as Agios Ioannis. In its interior, the Medieval Castle of Santa Maura stands out with its battlements from which to look out over the canal, the floating bridge that connects the island with the peninsula, the Archaeological Museum, the Pantazis Contomihis or the Folklore Museum of the Music and Literature Club of Orfeas of Lefkada or the market of the central square of Marka and the churches of the city among which stands out the Church of Pantokrator in whose cemetery one can see the tomb of the Greek poet Aristotelis Valariotis. Finally, do not forget to take a walk through one of the city’s gardens, such as the Poet’s Park, where concerts of the Philharmonic Society take place in summer.

But I think we took a lot of the visit, and here I leave our findings:

• Frini Sto Molo,  a tavern in the harbor with a terrace overlooking the pier, with a spectacular mousaka and seafood and fresh fish.
• Sea to See, perfect to have an aperitif or a Cocktail at sunset.
• Taverna Eutuxia 1960,  a small local tavern in which they serve homemade dishes following traditional recipes that are finger-licking.
• Ciao, an artisanal ice cream shop that opens at 6pm in the pedestrian area that surprises you every day with a new flavor like mastiha, a sweet liqueur that they say helps to settle the stomach after a meal, or mango sorbet (my favourite!)
• Joy Bar, a tiny bar that serves cocktails and smoothies in a cozy and familiar atmosphere.
