NUna de las ciudades más fascinantes que he conocido nunca es Marrakech… su exotismo, sus colores, aromas y contrastes me hacen experimentar mil sensaciones cada día y esto hace que cada vez que la visito, por pocos días que sean, sea siempre intensos e inolvidables.

En mis últimas inmersiones en la ciudad he ido descubriendo y enganchándome poco a poco la magia de los riads… esos oasis de tranquilidad en medio del bullicio vertiginoso de la Medina que te tele-transportan de manera inmediata a un mood zen relajante y maravilloso, el equilibrio ideal para el viajero inquieto que no quiere perderse nada entre las callejuelas y zocos de la ciudad.

Riad significa jardín, y de hecho el patio o el jardín es el eje central sobre el que se estructura este tipo de edificio generalmente pequeño, con pocas habitaciones y una disposición en plantas que en ocasiones culmina con una maravillosa azotea desde la cual asomarse al ritmo frenético del exterior o a unas vistas sobrecogedoras del complejo laberinto de callejones que conforman Marrakech.

La esencia de los riads son sus propietarios, familias que regentan con ilusión y humildad negocios que pasan de generación en generación y que en vuelcan con sus cliente su agasajándolos con cientos de detalles, desayunos deliciosos elaborados al momento con mimo y productos locales, velas que aportan una atmósfera especial al ambiente a la caída de la tarde, un aromático té con hierbabuena… si de verdad queréis sentiros cuidados y especiales, encontraréis en ellos una calidez que ningún hotel de lujo nunca podrá igualar.

Como todo, el avance y los nuevos tiempos han favorecido también un desarrollo y una sofisticación de este tipo de alojamientos… en estos momentos la oferta de Marrakech es de lo más extensa y cubre todo tipo de gustos y necesidades, desde negocios súper humildes y funcionales hasta verdaderos templos del hedonismo y de la elegancia.

Es dificil elegir, y cada año que pasa más… pero os hemos hecho una selección de aquellos que más nos han seducido e impactado, lugares en los que hemos vivido unos días inolvidables y que han ayudado a que nuestras visitas a Marrakech hayan sido singulares, especiales, únicas, mágicas.  De hecho, me estoy planteando para nuestro próximo viaje hacer una ruta de riads durmiendo cada día en uno distinto para seguir descubriendo todos sus encantos! Esta semana en Trippingbites…

 

 Mis 5 riads favoritos de Marrakech

 

1. Be Marrakech, Lahcen ou Ali 23

A  unos 800 metros de la plaza Jemaa El – Fna se encuentra el que puede que se haya convertido en uno de mis riads favoritos de todos los tiempos: un alojamiento súper chic pequeñito pero muy acogedor de estilo 100% marroquí que te reta constantemente a hacer fotos de cada uno de sus rincones y que irradia una luz única. Una de las cosas que me volvían loca de él eran los azulejos (de las paredes, de los pasillos, de la piscina…) y la vajilla que utilizaban para el desayuno, las comidas o las cenas.

Sus propietarios, Mo y Nicole, están muy vinculados al yoga y organizan retiros junto con The Flow Yoga Studio (situado en la Medina) … supongo que esto influye en que sientas fluir una especie de energía que te inspira, te reconforta y te hace sentir como si estuvieses en casa.

El establecimiento se ha renovado y al antiguo edificio se ha anexado una nueva zona con más habitaciones (si están disponibles, elegid mejor éstas) y todo en él es confort, creatividad (por todos sitios cuelgan las coloridas obras de arte de Nicole, la anfitriona), hospitalidad y magia. Un detalle que me encanta es que cada día ponen flores frescas tanto en las zonas comunes como en las habitaciones y sobre todo destaco el esmero que ponen en los desayunos con sus mermeladas y granola caseras que sirven en la azotea.

A pesar de no ser un riad de los más caros, si se presta mucha atención a los detalles: las sábanas por ejemplo son ecológicas, la terraza por la noche se llena de velas para crear una atmósfera romántica para la cena, y los platos que sirven son sencillos pero cocinados con mucho cariño (y se nota).

En total, son 10 habitaciones a cual mas bonita (4 en lo que llaman la zona o riad Essence con nombres de hierbas, plantas y esencias: Melha, Zafran, Salmia y Lebzar y 6 en la zona Oasis en la que cada una está decorada con un color diferente: amarillo, azul, verde, rojo, beige y otra en blanco y negro). Los precios empiezan desde los 110€ con desayuno incluido. Cuentan también con un Hamman propio en el que te puedes dar un masaje, imparten clases de cocina, organizan cenas sorpresa especiales… en definitiva es uno de los musts que no sea podéis perder en Marrakech.

 

 

2. Riad Yasmine, 209 Rue Ank Jemel

Puede que sea uno de los riads más fotogénicos e instagrameados de la ciudad. Situado al Norte de la Medina y a un paseo del centro, cuenta con 8 preciosas habitaciones y un patio selvático y tropical que invita a quedarse largas horas leyendo en silencio. Si el día es soleado, desayunar en la azotea al cobijo de las luces y sombras que se producen gracias a sus toldos de rafia junto a las impresionantes vistas es un espectáculo, si no desayunar en el patio al lado de la piscina productos deliciosos como yogur, tartas, crepes, tortilla, fruta… es una delicia también. Si queréis estar más tranquilos o incluso pasar un rato leyendo o con el ordenador, también hay un bonito living room con sala de lectura en el que suena una música relajarte de fondo.

Pero lo mejor sin duda es el trato y el servicio por parte de los anfitriones (Alice y Gaby) y de todo su personal: ellos mismos te organizan el transfer desde (y hacia) el aeropuerto, te dan una cálida bienvenida y recibimiento con té morube o limonada y galletas y se vuelcan contigo para conseguir que tu estancia tanto dentro como fuera del riad sea perfecta.

Las 8 habitaciones están decoradas con mucho gusto y un toque rústico/ chic muy especial, nosotros nos alojamos en la habitación del primer piso (Imsouane) que tenía bonitas vistas al patio y la piscina, lo mejor de todo es que el descanso está garantizado no solo porque no está en pleno centro, sino también por la comodidad de la cama y porque todas las habitaciones están insonorizadas. También cuenta con lujosas suites como la Suite Merzouga decorada en tonos rosas o la Suite Agafay con su propia terraza, y con un pequeño riad anexo (Le Petit Yasmine) que puede reservarse vía AirBnB de tres habitaciones y capacidad entre 2 y 6 personas. Si hay sitio en vuestras fechas de viaje en cualquiera de estas opciones no dudéis en reservar porque generalmente este riad no suele tener mucha disponibilidad… ser uno de los alojamientos más posteado en redes sociales de Marrakech hace que su demanda sea muy alta. Los precios oscilan entre los 80-150€ la noche en función de la habitación y en el caso de Le Petit Yasmine ascienden a unos 400€.

 

3. Le Jardin Secret, 43 – 46 Arset Aouzal

Este riad tiene un espíritu exótico, bohemio, artístico, algo hippie y decadente… estilo chabby chic o wabi sabi. Aloja en su interior The Moroccans Boutique, un templo para el bienestar y para mimarse a uno mismo que utiliza sus propios productos elaborados naturalmente de la marca “The Moroccans“. Lo encontraréis en plena Medina, fácilmente accesible en el barrio Bab Doukkala a un paseo de 5 minutos del zoco, muy cerca de los Jardines Majorelle y a 15 minutos andando desde Jemaa el-Fna. Además, está justo al lado del Heritage Spa, por lo que si os apetece disfrutar de sus relajantes baños turcos podréis hacerlo cada día andando unos pocos pasos.

Fundado por una pareja francesa (Julien y Cyrielle), en este lugar el tiempo parece detenerse dentro de sus puertas de madera de cedro y su arquitectura tradicional marroquí decorada diseños, grabados, molduras talladas… Como las típicas casas Marrakshi, el riad gira en torno a dos patios: un gran espacio público lleno de árboles frutales de ambiente tropical con una fuente de mármol e incluso una jaula con pájaros cuyos cantos de fondo son ideales para tomarse un té relajante por la tarde y un patio privado en el que antes se congregaban las mujeres de la casa y que en la actualidad se ha convertido en una gran cocina al aire libre con su propia chimenea. Además, el alojamiento presume de tener un restaurante vegano único en la ciudad llamado The Pink Rooftop y ubicado en la mítica terraza rosa, uno de los rincones más codiciados y popular del riad.

Youssef, el encargado, lo da todo para que tu estancia sea siempre perfecta y todas las mañanas te sirven en la azotea el tradicional desayuno marroquí con sus pasteles, yogur, fruta, zumo de naranja recién exprimido, opciones vegetarianas y hasta un delicioso brownie de matcha. Otra curiosidad es que cuentan con un estudio para artistas con caballetes, pinturas, material de escritura… y éstos suelen reservarlo para inspirarse en sus creaciones, por lo que en el día a día se convive con con personas creativas, bohemias y muy interesantes con las que conversar mientras te tomas un té.

Sus cinco habitaciones decoradas al detalle con cojines de kilim, alfombras de yute y rafia, cabeceros tallados de madera, azulejos, cristaleras… invitan al descanso y a la relajación. La nuestra era la habitación doble, muy sencilla pero con el encanto de los techos artesonados, las cristaleras de colores en las ventanas y las vistas al patio, con un precio de 150€ la noche con desayuno. Pero había habitaciones de categorías superiores cuyos precios rondaban los 180€ – 260€ en función del tipo o la capacidad.

 

4. La Sultana, 403 Rue de la Kasbah

Hablar de La Sultana son palabras mayores… este Riad con una historia maravillosa se remonta al siglo XII con la dinastía Almohad, en esa época era el granero que suplía a la familia real y los actuales ladrillos que utiliza recuerdan ese momento. En el siglo XVI se construyeron las tumbas saadíes y el Palacio Badi, que sirvieron como fuente de inspiración para el diseño de las baldosas del patio del Riad. Su apariencia actual captura el encanto y la elegancia de antaño transportándote nada mas entrar a un palacio de las 1001 Noches, haciéndote sentir como su propio nombre indica como un verdadero sultán.

El tamaño de los riads en Marrakech tiene un límite, y en este caso al quedarse sin espacio los propietarios optaron por unir varios edificios. En realidad, La Sultana es un conjunto de 5 riads diferentes convertidos en hotel boutique unidos por un área común, por lo que podríamos estar hablando más de un concepto híbrido entre hotel y riad.

En su remodelación y evolución, este alojamiento ha cuidado como nadie el diseño arquitectónico evocando toda la fastuosidad y las tradiciones del pasado marroquí pero desde todas las comodidades modernas. Pinturas, molduras doradas, celosías, columnas… un ambiente exótico, opulento y de fantasía para sentir una verdadera experiencia árabe. Nos gustó mucho la zona de la piscina (de unos 10×4 metros y agua ionizada) con su jardín tropical, las palmeras y los arcos bajo los que resguardarse el sol… un oasis exhuberante, relajante y precioso para disfrutarlo cada día.

Lo que mas me impactó es que, a pesar de todo el lujo y la exclusividad, e incluso de su tamaño, el ambiente en general es muy familiar, acogedor y sencillo. El personal es súper profesional pero al mismo tiempo cercano, cálido y agradable… puede que haya hasta 100 empleados trabajando pero todos te sonríen y la mayoría saben tu nombre.

Pero también destaca su enorme terraza panorámica de 2,000 m² con vistas en la ciudad en medio de jardines colgante desde la que se disfrutan atardeceres increíbles y su spa merece una mención aparte: desde sus masajes y tratamientos, los productos que utilizan, su atmósfera Zen… todo un mundo de sensorialidad y experiencias tanto para el cuerpo como para el espíritu. Y si sois tan fans de la cocina marroquí como yo, además de disfrutar de sus platos en el restaurante, La Sultana ofrece clases de cocina en la que te enseñan un buen puñado de secretos… algunos de ellos ya los he puesto en práctica en alguna receta que he elaborado y han sido todo un exito!

El alojamiento tiene 13 habitaciones y 15 suites exquisitamente decoradas en las que se exponen una colección de pinturas orientales y se mezcla la sofisticación con un ambiente íntimo y cozy: baños de revista revestidos de mármol, chimenea, maderas preciosas, detalles en cobre, antigüedades… algunas tienen balcón privado y jacuzzi. Los precios son elevados y empiezan desde los 300€ en una habitación prestige deluxe pudiendo llegar a los 750€-800€ en temporada alta en las suites deluxe.

 

 

5. El Fenn, Derb Moulay Abdullah Ben Hezzian, 2

Terminamos con otro alojamiento cuyos precios (al igual que los de La Sultana) lo hacen menos accesible frente a los primeros de la lista, pero no podíamos dejar de incluirlo dentro de nuestro top 5 porque nos parece un riad fascinante y uno de los más secretos y románticos en pleno corazón de la ciudad. Lo encontraréis en el barrio de Mouasine en la Medina a pocos minutos de la plaza, pero a pesar de su cercanía al centro sus muros de un metro de grosor resguardan en su interior un silencio sepulcral donde la paz y el relax están 100% garantizados.

Fenn significa fresco en el idioma local y creo que el nombre es perfecto para describir lo que este establecimiento ofrece a sus clientes: frondosos jardines y patios tropicales llenos de árboles y buganvillas, varias zonas para aislarse del bullicio de la ciudad.

Su propietaria Vanessa Branston tuvo un flechazo a con esta antigua casa palacio Marrakchi mientras se encontraba buscando una casa de vacaciones en Marrakech, y durante dos años la restauró junto con un artesano local. Posteriormente se anexaron casas contiguas, se hizo una remodelación y el riad se fue convirtiendo en lo que es en la actualidad: colores cereza, azafrán y azures, obras de arte, artesanía tradicional marroquí, jardines colgantes, piezas de mobiliario del zoco… todo respira un encanto decadente inspirado en los mercados de Marrakech. 

Nada más abrir la preciosa puerta arqueada azul de la entrada, te encuentras con una atmósfera totalmente distinta y colorida, salpicada de obras de arte moderno y en la que se la tradición y vanguardia se entremezclan entre las luces y las sombras del patio. Por todos sitios aparecen pequeños rincones secretos y escondidos con zonas de descanso flanqueadas por enredaderas que aportan privacidad, y te encuentras con la calurosa bienvenida de Fátima, Abdelkarim y Amina.

El riad tiene tres piscinas  (una decorada con mosaicos y las otras dos esculpidas en mármol de Carrara), un Cocktail Bar & Restaurante, una biblioteca, un hamman, un teatro privado en el que se proyectan películas y la azotea llena de rosaledas y en la que reside una familia de tortugas con vistas a la mezquita de la Koutoubia y del laberinto de calles del zoco.

Sus 28 habitaciones de temática y decoración morisca tienen en su mayoría techos altos y baños de ensueño. Seis de ellas cuentan con su propia chimenea, una tiene su propia piscina privada con fondo de cristal (la número 19) y todas son amplias e incorporan una zona de salón, ninguna tiene TV. Los precios como os hemos comentado no son baratos y comienzan en los 280€ por noche las más pequeñas. Pero si buscáis bien por Internet, a veces hay ofertas bastante interesantes en páginas como Amoma, Agoda o similares. Nosotros encontramos una irresistible en Destinia por unos 160€ que no dudamos en utilizar, la experiencia merece la pena! 😉

One of the most fascinating cities I have ever known is Marrakech… its exoticism, its colours, aromas, sensations and contrasts make me experience a thousand sensations every day and this means that every time I visit it, no matter how few days they may be, it is always intense and unforgettable.

In my last dives in the city I have been discovering and getting hooked little by little the magic of the riads… those oasis of tranquility in the middle of the vertiginous bustle of the Medina that tele-transport you immediately to a relaxing and wonderful mood zen, the ideal balance for the restless traveller who does not want to miss anything between the streets and souks of the city.

Riad means garden, and in fact the courtyard or garden is the central axis on which this type of building is structured, generally small, with few rooms and a layout in floors that sometimes culminates with a wonderful roof from which to lean out at the frantic pace of the outside or a breathtaking views of the complex labyrinth of alleys that make up Marrakech.

The essence of the riads are their owners, families who run businesses with illusion and humility that pass from generation to generation and that in turn with their customers their treats with hundreds of details, delicious breakfasts prepared at the time with care and local products, candles that bring a special atmosphere to the atmosphere at dusk, an aromatic tea with mint … if you really want to feel cared for and special, you will find in them a warmth that no luxury hotel can ever match.

Like everything else, the advance and the new times have also favoured the development and sophistication of this type of accommodation… at the moment Marrakech’s offer is the most extensive and covers all kinds of tastes and needs, from super humble and functional businesses to true temples of hedonism and elegance.

It is difficult to choose, and every year that passes more… but we have made a selection of those who have seduced and impacted us most, places in which we have lived unforgettable days and that have helped our visits to Marrakech have been unique, special, unique, magical.  In fact, I am considering for our next trip to make a route of riads sleeping each day in a different one to continue discovering all its charms! This week in Trippingbites…

 

 My 5 favourite riads in Marrakech

 

1. Be Marrakech, Lahcen ou Ali 23

About 800 meters from Jemaa El – Fna Square is what may have become one of my favorite riads of all time: a small but very cozy super chic accommodation in 100% Moroccan style that constantly challenges you to take pictures of each of its corners and radiates a unique light. One of the things that drove me crazy were the tiles (of the walls, of the corridors, of the swimming pool…) and the crockery they used for breakfast, lunches or dinners full of colour.

Its owners, Mo and Nicole, are closely linked to yoga and organize retreats together with The Flow Yoga Studio (located in the Medina) … I suppose this influences you to feel a kind of energy flowing that inspires you, comforts you and makes you feel as if you were at home.

The establishment has been renovated and a new part has been annexed to the old building with more rooms (if available, choose these better) and everything in it is comfort, creativity (everywhere hang the colorful works of art of Nicole, the hostess), hospitality and magic. A detail that I love is that every day they put fresh flowers in the common areas as well as in the rooms and above all I emphasize the care they put in the breakfasts with their homemade jams and granola served on the roof.

Despite not being one of the most expensive riads, if you pay a lot of attention to details: the sheets for example are ecological, the terrace at night is filled with candles to create a romantic atmosphere for dinner, and the dishes they serve are simple but lovingly cooked (and you can tell).

In total, there are 10 beautiful rooms (4 in what they call the area or riad Essence with names of herbs, plants and essences: Melha, Zafran, Salmia and Lebzar and 6 in the Oasis area in which each is decorated with a different color: yellow, blue, green, red, beige and another in black and white). Prices start from 110€ with breakfast included. They also have their own Hammam in which you can have a massage, give cooking classes, organize special surprise dinners … in short is one of the musts that you can not lose in Marrakech.

 

 

2. Riad Yasmine, 209 Rue Ank Jemel

It may be one of the most photogenic and instagrammed riads in the city. Situated to the north of the Medina and a short walk from the centre, it has 8 beautiful rooms and a jungle and tropical courtyard that invites you to spend long hours reading in silence. If it’s a sunny day, having breakfast on the rooftop, sheltered by the lights and shadows produced by its raffia awnings next to the breathtaking views, is a spectacle. If not, having breakfast in the courtyard next to the swimming pool, delicious products such as yogurt, cakes, crepes, tortillas, fruit… it’s a delight too. If you want to be more relaxed or even spend some time reading or with the computer, there is also a nice living room with reading room where you can relax in the background.

But the best thing is undoubtedly the treatment and service by the hosts (Alice and Gaby) and all their staff: they themselves organize the transfer from (and to) the airport, give you a warm welcome and welcome with morube tea or lemonade and cookies and turn with you to make your stay both inside and outside the riad is perfect.

The rooms are tastefully decorated with a very special rustic/chic touch, we stayed in the room on the first floor (Imsouane) which also had beautiful views of the courtyard and the swimming pool, the best of all is that rest is guaranteed not only because it is not in the center, but also because the comfort of the bed and because all rooms are soundproofed. It also has luxurious suites such as the Merzouga Suite decorated in pink tones or the Agafay Suite with its own terrace, and a small annexed riad (Le Petit Yasmine) that can be booked via AirBnB with three rooms and capacity for 2 to 6 people. If there is room in your dates of travel in any of these options do not hesitate to book because generally this riad is not usually available … being one of the most instagrammable accommodation in Marrakech makes its demand is very high. Prices range from 80-150€ a night depending on the room and in the case of Le Petit Yasmine amount to about 400€.

 

3. Le Jardin Secret, 43 – 46 Arset Aouzal

This Riad has an exotic, bohemian, artistic, hippie and decadent spirit… chabby chic or wabi sabi style. It houses The Moroccans Boutique, a temple for well-being and to pamper oneself using one’s own products made naturally from the «The Moroccans» brand. You’ll find it in the heart of Medina, easily accessible in the Bab Doukkala district, a 5-minute walk from the souk, very close to the Majorelle Gardens and a 15-minute walk from Jemaa el-Fna. In addition, it is right next to the Heritage Spa, so if you want to enjoy its relaxing Turkish baths you can do it every day by walking a few steps.

Founded by a French couple (Julien and Cyrielle), in this place time seems to stop within its cedar wood doors and its traditional Moroccan architecture decorated designs, engravings, carved moldings … Like the typical Marrakshi houses, the riad revolves around two courtyards: a large public space full of tropical fruit trees with a marble fountain and even a bird cage whose backdrop is ideal for a relaxing afternoon tea and a private courtyard in which the women of the house used to congregate and which has now become a large open-air kitchen with its own fireplace. In addition, the lodge boasts a unique vegan restaurant in the city called The Pink Rooftop and located on the mythical pink terrace, one of the most coveted and popular corners of the riad.

Youssef, the manager, gives everything so that your stay is always perfect and every morning you are served on the roof the traditional Moroccan breakfast with its cakes, yogurt, fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, vegetarian options and even a delicious brownie de matcha. Another curiosity is that they have a studio for artists with easels, paintings, writing material … and they usually reserve it to be inspired by their creations, so in the day to day lives with creative people, bohemian and very interesting.

Its five rooms are decorated in detail with kilim cushions, jute and raffia carpets, carved wooden headboards, tiles, glass… invite to rest and relaxation. Ours was the double room, very simple but with the charm of the coffered ceilings, the coloured glass in the windows and the views to the patio, with a price of 150€ the night with breakfast. But there were rooms of higher categories whose prices were around 180€ – 260€ depending on the type or capacity.

 

4. La Sultana, 403 Rue de la Kasbah

Talking about La Sultana are major words… This Riad with a wonderful history goes back to the 12th century with the Almohad dynasty, at that time it was the granary that supplied the royal family and the current bricks used remember that moment. In the 16th century the Sa’adi tombs and the Badi Palace were built, which served as a source of inspiration for the design of the tiles in the Riad courtyard. Its current appearance captures the charm and elegance of yesteryear by transporting you as soon as you enter a palace of 1001 Nights and making you feel as its own name indicates as a true sultan.

The size of the riads in Marrakech has a limit, and in this case when running out of space the owners chose to join several buildings. Actually, La Sultana is a set of 5 different riads converted into a boutique hotel united by a common area, so we could be talking more of a hybrid concept between hotel and riad.

In its remodeling and evolution, this lodging has taken care of the architectural design evoking all the magnificence and the traditions of the Moroccan past but from all the modern comforts. Paintings, golden mouldings, latticework, columns… an exotic, opulent and fantasy atmosphere to feel a true Arab experience. We liked very much the area of the swimming pool (about 10×4 meters and ionized water) with its tropical garden, palm trees and arches under which to shelter the sun … an exuberant oasis, relaxing and beautiful to enjoy every day.

What struck me the most is that, despite all the luxury and exclusivity, and even its size, the overall atmosphere is very familiar, welcoming and simple. The staff is super professional but at the same time close, warm and friendly… there may be up to 100 employees working but they all smile at you and most know your name.

But also very much highlights its huge panoramic terrace of 2,000 m² with views of the city in the middle of hanging gardens from which you can enjoy incredible sunsets and their spa deserves a separate mention: from their massages and treatments, the products they use, their Zen atmosphere … a whole world of sensoriality and experiences for the body as well as the spirit. And if you are as much fans of Moroccan cuisine as I am, as well as enjoying their dishes in the restaurant, La Sultana offers cooking classes in which they teach you a good handful of secrets… some of them I have already put into practice in some recipes and they’ve been a great success!

The lodging has 13 rooms and 15 exquisitely decorated suites in which a collection of oriental paintings is exhibited and sophistication is mixed with an intimate and cozy atmosphere: magazine bathrooms clad in marble, fireplace, precious woods, copper details, antiques… some of them have a private balcony and Jacuzzi. Prices are high and start from 300€ in a prestige deluxe room and can reach 750€-800€ in high season in deluxe suites.

 

 

5. El Fenn, Derb Moulay Abdullah Ben Hezzian, 2

We ended up with another expensive accommodation… its prices (as well as those of La Sultana) make it not as accessible as any of the previous ones, but we couldn’t stop including it in our top 5 because it seems to us a fascinating riad and one of the most secret and romantic in the heart of the city. You will find it in the district of Mouasine in the Medina to few minutes of the square, but in spite of its proximity to the center its walls of a meter of thickness shelter in its interior a sepulchral silence where the peace and the relax are 100% guaranteed.

Fenn means fresh in the local language and I think the name is perfect to describe what this establishment offers to its customers: lush gardens and tropical patios full of trees and bougainvilleas, several areas to relax from the bustle of the city.

Its owner Vanessa Branston had a crush on this ancient Marrakchi palace house while looking for a holiday home in Marrakech, and for two years restored it together with a local craftsman. Subsequently adjoining houses were annexed, a remodelling was made and the riad became what it is today: cherry, saffron and azure colours, works of art, traditional Moroccan craftsmanship, hanging gardens, furniture from the souk… everything breathes a decadent charm inspired by the markets of Marrakech. 

As soon as you open the beautiful blue arched door at the entrance you find yourself in a totally different and colorful atmosphere, dotted with works of modern art and in which tradition and the avant-garde intermingle between the lights and shadows of the courtyard. Everywhere there are small secret corners hidden with rest areas flanked by vines that provide privacy, and you find the warm welcome of Fatima, Abdelkarim and Amina.

The riad has three little swimming pools (one decorated with mosaics and the other two sculpted in Carrara marble), a Cocktail Bar & Restaurant, a library, a hamman, a private theatre where films are shown and the roof full of rose gardens and where a family of turtles live, with views of the Koutoubia mosque and the maze of streets in the souk.

Its 28 rooms have a Moorish decoration with high ceilings and dream bathrooms. Six of them have their own fireplace, one has its own private pool with glass bottom (number 19) and all are spacious and incorporate a lounge area, none has TV. The prices as we have mentioned are not cheap and start at 280€ per night the smallest. But if you search well on the Internet, sometimes there are quite interesting offers on pages like Amoma, Agoda or similar. We found an irresistible one in Destinia for about 160€ that we didn’t hesitate to use, the experience was worth it! 😉
