Buenos Lunes, trippers! ¿Qué tal se presenta la semana? Yo ya estoy preparando maletas y con muchas ganas de vivir nuestra nueva aventura italiana!!! Me encantan los días previos a un viaje en los que se exprimen los planes, los preparativos y tu cabeza se llena  de ilusiones y expectativas…. espero que nuestro destino nos depare mil sorpresas y descubrimientos que poder compartir luego con todos vosotros!

El otro día comiendo con unos compañeros me preguntaron por mi viaje a Tailandia del que ya os hablé un poco en el post Sawasdee… uno de los primeros posts de este blog en el que quizá pequé un poco de ingenuidad intentando resumir demasiado los principales encantos de este maravilloso país. El paso del tiempo, vuestro feedback y la experiencia con Trippingbites me ha demostrado que merece la pena detenerse un poco más en cada destino, haciendo una revisión más en profundidad de las diferentes áreas aunque sea en varias entradas, y releyendo Sawadee me doy cuenta que es conveniente pensar en algunas secuelas más temáticas como ésta que os traigo esta semana en la que me apetecía detallar un poco más un archipiélago que me enamoró mucho antes de visitarlo: las Islas Phi Phi. 

Todo el mundo conoce este pequeño y remoto archipiélago desde que ese increíble escaparate llamado cine nos mostraba allá por el año 2000 a un Leonardo di Caprio nadando en pleno Mar de Andamán llegando a un paraíso inigualable que daba título a la película: La playa. Aquel impresionante escenario no era otro que Maya Bay, que posteriormente pasó a formar parte de mi corto listado de lugares favoritos del Mundo. Y   es que dicen que a veces la realidad supera la ficción… puede que al llegar allí me quedase incluso más embobada si cabe que el personaje al que interpretaba Leo en el film… y desde luego es un momento que conservaré siempre en mi memoria viajera como uno de los más especiales, especialmente ahora que recientemente se ha tomado la decisión de restringir el acceso a los barcos para intentar regenerar el entorno de la bahía y los arrecifes de coral gravemente dañados por el turismo masivo. Una pena.

Pero Maya Bay (en Koh Phi Phi Leh) era tan solo el preludio de una aventura única en la que descubriríamos parajes excepcionales, playas de ensueño, un verdadero universo submarino y pequeños pueblecitos que te invitaban a dejarlo todo de lado y empezar una nueva vida salvaje, exótica y privilegiada…. Nuestro viaje nos deparó mil vicisitudes, incluyendo un temporal en mitad del océano, una parada en Monkey Beach con una anécdota curiosa con los monos, una de las comidas más picantes de nuestras vidas al borde del mar y hasta una excursión secreta. Hoy estas remotas islitas están más de moda que nunca, así que… ¿no creéis que todo ello las hace candidatas al un post propio esta semana?

Koh Phi Phi, el paraíso perdido de Tailandia

Phi Phi es un archipiélago que comprende un total de 6 islas en los que se conoce como Parque Nacional Mu Koh Phi Phi – Nopparathara conocidas como las joyas del Mar de Andamán: Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh, Koh Pai (Bamboo Island), Koh Yung (Mosquito Island), Bida Nok y Bida Nai. De todas ellas, solo Phi Phi Don está habitada y a las demás se accede por medio de excursiones y taxis acuáticos.

Para llegar a Koh Phi Phi Don lo primero que hay que hacer es armarse de paciencia. Tanto si se llega desde Phuket (que fue la ruta que nosotros hicimos) como desde Krabi, Rai Ley o Ao Nang, un trayecto de duración variable entre la hora y las dos horas y media barco no te lo quita nadie. Y lo de la duración variable lo remarco especialmente porque el tiempo en este lugar del mundo es especialmente relativo, especialmente si os toca un día de aguas revueltas… pero es solo otro de los alicientes del viaje. El traslado en Ferry desde Krabi o Phuket cuesta en torno a los 13-14€ por persona y aunque siempre se pueden negociar precios mucho más económicos en las playas de origen, en Get your guide os ofrecen la posibilidad de reservarlo online e ir sobre seguro.

Sea cual sea su procedencia, todos los ferries llegan al precioso puerto de Ton Sai en el que entre los grandes barcos se dispersan los característicos long tail boats, grandes protagonistas en las fotografías de las playas de esta zona y responsables de teñir la orilla del puerto de brillantes tonalidades gracias a las coloridas banderas con las que se decoran sus mástiles. Esta peculiar embarcación, creativa donde las haya,  se caracteriza por incorporar un motor de automóvil o de camión fuera del casco que se maneja sin necesidad de timón por medio de una gran palanca y sirve para todo: para pescar, transportar comida, hacer tours y excursiones, como taxi acuático…. si os gusta la fotografía, no perdáis la oportunidad de fotografiarlos a la caída del sol con el contraste azul turquesa del agua.

 

Koh Phi Phi Don

La isla mayor, Phi Phi Don, es uno de esos lugares en los que nada más llegar quieres quedarte para siempre. Y además, eligiendo el lado de la isla que más te guste: la zona de la Bahía de Tonsai, llena de cafés, bares, tiendas, restaurantes, hoteles más económicos y una animada vida nocturna, o la zona del Norte de la isla, más calmada, exclusiva y con los alojamientos de mayor categoría que se dispersan con sus cabañas por la selva. A nosotros nos convencía mucho más estar en el meollo de todo y elegimos la vida de Tonsai, pero os recomendaré también hotel maravilloso que nos encantó y que probablemente será el elegido en nuestra próxima visita a la isla que se encuentra en esta segunda zona, ideal para desconectar de todo y disfrutar de la tranquilidad.

4 cosas imprescindibles que hacer en Phi Phi Don

• Hay gente que dice que las islas pequeñas son aburridas. Pero en Phi Phi Don siempre había algo que hacer… y cuando te cansabas no tenías más que tumbarte en la arena blanca y disfrutar del paisaje. Esta isla, de unos 28 kms2, casi se subdivide en dos islas conectadas por un pequeño hilo de tierra y lo que no se puede dejar de hacer es la caminata para llegar al Phi Phi Don Viewpoint para admirar esta división desde las alturas… tras aproximadamente 20 minutos desde la Bahía de Loh Dalum y ascendiendo unos 185 metros hasta llegar a la cima de un monte, os toparéis con este espectacular mirador especialmente embaucador a la puesta del sol. Sentarse ante semejante panorámica te deja simplemente sin palabras y te hace sentir la persona más privilegiada del Mundo… no hace falta nada más.

• Tras la caminata, nada mejor que disfrutar de la vida de Phi Phi Don y de las mil y una opciones que ofrece y entre las que cuesta mucho elegir:  lugares como el Sunflower Beach Bar & Restaurant con su ambiente chill out relajado y su deliciosa comida, el espectáculo de fuegos nocturno del Carlitos Beach Bar (ideal para disfrutarlo con unas cervezas), el Hippies Bar en plena playa, el restaurante Acqua con una cocina tailandesa espectacular y uno de los mejores Pad Thais de la zona (ojo al picante si os pedís el Massaman Curry… quedáis avisados!). Para desayunar o tomar algo dulce (fruta, smoothies, waffles) The Mango Garden es la mejor opción de la isla, y para un momento mas especial no dejéis de pedir una de las 10 mesas con vistas al mar en el Mama Resto and the Cliff’s Bar, dentro del hotel Mama Beach Residence, perfecto para cenar y terminar en su bar tomando un cocktail.

• Otro gran atractivo de Phi Phi Don es poder disfrutar de su vida marina exótica haciendo snorkel o buceo para ver especies como tiburones leopardo. Para ello, uno de los mejores centros de buceo de la zona es el Phi Phi Scuba Diving, situado justo en el puerto, que ofrece hasta inmersiones nocturnas para poder admirar las especies más difíciles.

• Y finalmente, el último plan que os propongo es hacer excursiones para descubrir sus playas más apartadas y tranquilas más allá de la bonita pero agitada Tonsai Village Beach
  • En la zona Este: Long Beach y Loh Moo Dee (a la que se puede llegar fácilmente cogiendo un long tail boat en Tonsai por unos 150 BTH)
  • Al Norte de la isla: Loh Lanna Beach, Laem Tong Beach y Loh Bakao
  • La especial Tohko Bay, una de las menos conocidas y que casi siempre estaba vacía, con un restaurante local en el que se come de maravilla.
  • Monkey Beach,  a la que podemos llegar en kayak (se alquilan en Loh Dalum Beach), plagada de monos salvajes deseosos de turistas que les obsequien con comida (mucho cuidado con ellos, que no se andan con chiquitas jejeje). La ruta acuática hacia esta playa está rodeada de paisajes impresionantes y merece la pena solo por el camino.

• Como punto final a un día de playa, podemos acercarnos al Poblado Moken (el famoso pueblo indígena conocido como los gitanos del mar que vive en casas en el agua)

Koh Phi Phi Leh

A tan solo 1,5 kms. al sur de Phi Phi Don llegamos a una de las islas más exhuberantes del Mundo y una verdadera maravilla de la naturaleza. Es sin duda la mejor excursión que hacer en la zona y lo ideal es hacerla a primera hora de la mañana para evitar la enorme masificación turística. El plato principal es Maya Bay, un arenal rodeado de unas montañas enormes y aguas turquesa transparentes. Es una pena que cada vez esté más masificada (el precio de aparecer por la gran pantalla), porque es un escenario único en el mundo que al menos hay que ver una vez en la vida.

Las excursiones suelen incluir la visita a Viking Cave, una cueva en el norte de la isla dentro de un acantilado donde pueden verse unas famosas pinturas de unos marineros que se refugiaron en la cueva durante una tormenta o los conocidos nidos de golondrinas muy codiciados por la cultura china por sus propiedades para la salud y especialmente para la piel. Algunos barcos también hacen una pequeña parada en Pileh Cove para hacer snorkel. Los tours suelen durar unas 4-6 horas y salen desde Phi Phi Don pero desde mi punto de vista lo mejor es acordar un precio en Tonsai cogiendo un long tail boat para vosotros solos y disfrutar a vuestro ritmo de la belleza apabullante de esta isla.

 

Koh Pai (Bamboo Island)

A unos 5 kilómetros al norte de Phi Phi Don, Bamboo Island es el destino ideal para los que buscan el auténtico relax o bucear entre fondos marinos plagados de impresionantes arrecifes de coral, como el de Hin Klang, que se comercializa desde la idea de estar nadando como en el interior de un acuario. Esta isla con forma de corazón es mucho más plana que las islas de alrededor, sin formaciones rocosas elevadas o acantilados, lo que hace que sea algo menos atractiva para los turistas y por ello mucho más tranquila, y un día es más que suficiente para descubrirla y disfrutar de su sensación de relax, aunque cuenta también con un camping para quienes deseen alargar su estancia. Para llegar a ella se puede negociar un long tail boat en Tonsai por unos 1000 Baths y el viaje puede alargarse hasta una hora.

 

 

Koh Yung (Mosquito Island), Bida Nok y Bida Nai

Desde el año 2017, el acceso a Mosquito Island está cerrado con el objetivo de preservar y renovar sus arrecifes de coral. Sin embargo, en nuestra ruta de ida o de vuelta a Bamboo Island podemos pedirle a la gente del long tail boat que nos paren en alguna de sus maravillosas aguas cercanas para hacer snorkel o darnos un baño y que nos en una vuelta para rodearla y poder admirar sus bonitas formaciones rocosas.

Bida Nok y Bida Nai son simplemente dos pequeños islotes situados a 1,5 kms. al sur de Phi Phi Leh a las que tampoco se puede acceder pero que forman parte de las rutas habituales como puntos habituales para poder ver tiburones zebra y hacer submarinismo. Muchos de estos tours se contratan directamente en Phi Phi Don, en la misma bahía de Tonsai.

 

Alojamiento en Phi Phi

Aunque algunas islas más pequeñas pueden contar con alguna pequeña oferta de alojamiento o camping, lo ideal es hacer de Phi Phi Don nuestro centro de operaciones: la oferta hotelera es muchísimo mejor y más extensa, y siempre podemos desplazarnos desde allí en excursiones, taxi acuático, long tail boat o tours a las islas de alrededor.

Como os comentaba, hay dos grandes zonas para alojarse y en cada una de ellas encontramos muy buenas opciones (aunque es importante señalar que ambas zonas tienen sus pros y sus contras: la zona norte tiene alojamientos de mayor categoría pero no permite el acceso a la zona de tiendas y restaurantes de la isla por la noche y la zona más céntrica de Tonsai Beach cuenta con hoteles más modestos pero cuenta con una mayor oferta de ocio), aquí os dejo algunos alojamientos que me encantaron en cada una de ellas:

 

En Tonsai Beach

• PP Princess Pool Villas, con villas al lado de la playa (algunas con piscina propia) y una ubicación perfecta en el centro de todo, por 90€ la noche.

• PP Palmtree Resort, a 5 minutos andando desde el puerto, ofrece habitaciones de decoración moderna, muy grandes y cómodas, en pleno centro. El desayuno es de tipo americano y muy abundante, y los precios rondan los 60€ por noche.

 

En la zona Norte de la isla

• Zeavola Resort & Spa ofrece unas cabañas lujosas y equipadas con todo lujo de detalles en un entorno privilegiado en plena Laem Tong Beach y con su propio acceso privado a la playa. Un sitio excepcional, tranquilo, relajante y alejado del bullicio del centro de la isla ideal para darse unas vacaciones de ensueño y para los que no les importe pagar un poco más por su estancia: los precios empiezan desde los 180€ por noche.

 

• Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort, es el hotel que os comentaba que nos quedamos con las ganas de probar y que seguramente elijamos en nuestra próxima visita a la isla. Su localización es espectacular, las habitaciones son preciosas y se organizan en cabañas, la piscina frente al mar es idílica… y los precios no están nada mal: 100€ la habitación con un delicioso desayuno incluido. ‘

Good Monday, trippers! how comes the week? I am already preparing suitcases and almost ready to live a new Italian adventure! I love the days before a trip in which the plans, preparations and your head are filled with illusions and expectations …. I hope that our destiny will give us a thousand surprises and discoveries to be able to share with all of you!

The other day eating with some colleagues asked me about my trip to Thailand that I already told you a little about in the post Sawasdee… one of the very first posts of this blog in which perhaps I sinned a bit of ingenuity trying to summarize too much the main charms of this wonderful country. The passage of time, your feedback and the experience with Trippingbites has shown me that it is worth stopping a little more in each destination, making a more in-depth review of the different areas even in several entries, and rereading Sawasdee I realize that it is convenient to think about some more thematic sequels like this one that I bring you this week in which I wanted to detail a little more an archipelago that I fell in love with a lot before visiting it: the Phi Phi Islands.

Everyone knows this small and remote archipelago since that incredible showcase called cinema showed us back in the year 2000 to a Leonardo di Caprio swimming in the middle of the Andaman Sea, arriving at a unique paradise that gave the title to the film: The beach. That impressive scenario was none other than Maya Bay, which subsequently became part of my short list of favorite places in the World. And they say that sometimes reality overcomes the fiction … maybe when I got there I would be even more enthralled if it is possible that the character that Leo played in the film … and of course it is a moment that I will always keep in my traveling memory as one of the most special, especially now that the decision has recently been made to restrict access to ships to try to regenerate the environment of the bay and the coral reefs badly damaged by mass tourism. A shame 😦

But Maya Bay (in Koh Phi Phi Leh) was just the prelude to a unique adventure in which we would discover exceptional places, dream beaches, a real underwater universe and small villages that invited you to leave everything aside and start a new life wild, exotic and privileged …. Our trip brought us a thousand vicissitudes, including a storm in the middle of the ocean, a stop in Monkey Beach with a curious anecdote with the monkeys, one of the spiciest meals of our lives at the edge of the sea and even a secret excursion. Today these remote little islands are more fashionable than ever, so … do not you think that all this makes them candidates for a post of their own this week?

 

Koh Phi Phi, the lost paradise of Thailand

Phi Phi is an archipelago comprising a total of 6 islands in what is known as Mu Koh Phi Phi – Nopparathara known as the jewels of the Andaman Sea: Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh, Koh Pai (Bamboo Island), Koh Yung (Mosquito Island), Bida Nok and Bida Nai. Of all of them, only Phi Phi Don is inhabited and the others are accessed by means of excursions and water taxis.

To get to Koh Phi Phi Don, the first thing to do is arm yourself with patience. Whether you arrive from Phuket (which was the route we did) or from Krabi, Rai Ley or Ao Nang, a journey of variable duration between the hour and two and a half hours boat is not taken away by anyone. And I emphasize especially the variable duration because the time in this place in the world is especially relative, especially if you touch a day of troubled waters … but it is just another of the attractions of the trip. The transfer in Ferry from Krabi or Phuket costs around 13-14 € per person and although you can always negotiate much cheaper prices on the beaches of origin, in Get your guide  they offer the possibility to reserve it online.

Whatever its origin, all the ferries arrive at the beautiful port of Ton Sai where the long tail boats are scattered among the big boats, great protagonists in the photographs of the beaches of this area and responsible for dyeing the shore of the port of brilliant tones thanks to the colorful flags with which their masts are decorated. This peculiar boat, creative where they are, is characterized by incorporating a motor car or truck outside the helmet that is handled without rudder by means of a large lever and serves for everything: to fish, transport food, make tours and excursions, such as water taxi …. if you like photography, do not miss the opportunity to photograph them at sunset with the turquoise blue contrast of the water.

 

 

Koh Phi Phi Don

The main island, Phi Phi Don, is one of those places where you just want to stay forever after arriving. And also, choosing the side of the island that you like the most: the area of Tonsai Bay, full of cafes, bars, shops, restaurants, cheaper hotels and a lively nightlife, or the area of the North of the island, more calm, exclusive and with the highest category accommodations that are scattered with their cabins through the jungle. We were much more convinced to be in the thick of everything and we chose the life of Tonsai, but I will also recommend you wonderful hotel that we loved and that will probably be the chosen one in our next visit to the island that is in this second zone, ideal to disconnect from everything and enjoy the tranquility.

4 essential things to do in Phi Phi Don

• There are people who say that small islands are boring. But in Phi Phi Don there was always something to do … and when you got tired you did not have to lie on the white sand and enjoy the scenery. This island, about 28 km2, is almost subdivided into two islands connected by a small thread of land and what you can not stop doing is the walk to reach the Phi Phi Don Viewpoint to admire this division from the heights … After about 20 minutes from the Bay of Loh Dalum and ascending about 185 meters to reach the top of a mountain, you will come across this spectacular viewpoint especially trickery at sunset. Sitting in front of such a panorama leaves you simply speechless and makes you feel like the most privileged person in the World … nothing else is needed.

• After the walk, nothing better than enjoying the life of Phi Phi Don and the thousand and one options it offers and among which it costs a lot to choose: places like Sunflower Beach Bar & Restaurant  with its relaxed chill out atmosphere and its delicious food, the nightly fire show of the Carlitos Beach Bar  (ideal to enjoy with a few beers), the Hippies Bar on the beach, the restaurant Acqua with a spectacular Thai cuisine and one of the best Pad Thais in the area (eye on the spicy if you ask for the Massaman Curry … you are warned!). To have breakfast or have something sweet (fruit, smoothies, waffles) The Mango Garden is one of the best options on the island, and for a more special moment do not forget to order one of the 10 tables overlooking the sea in the Mama Resto and the Cliff’s Bar,  inside the hotel Mama Beach Residence, perfect for dining and ending up at the bar with a cocktail.

• Another great attraction of Phi Phi Don is to be able to enjoy its exotic marine life doing snorkeling or diving to see species such as leopard sharks. For this, one of the best diving centers in the area is the Phi Phi Scuba Diving, located right in the harbor, which offers even night dives to admire the most difficult species.

• And finally, the last plan that I propose is to make excursions to discover its more secluded and quiet beaches beyond the beautiful but hectic Tonsai Beach
  • In the East: Long Beach and Loh Moo Dee  (the latter can be easily reached by taking a long tail boat in Tonsai for about 150 Bats)
  • North of the island: Loh Lanna Beach, Laem Tong Beach and Loh Bakao
  • The Tohko Bay, one of the least known and almost always empty, with a local restaurant where you eat great.
  • Monkey Beach, which can be reached by kayak (rented at Loh Dalum Beach), full of wild monkeys eager for tourists to give them food (be very careful with them, they do not go with little hehehe). The water route to this beach is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and is worth it just by the way.

• As a final point to a day at the beach, we can approach the Moken Village (the famous indigenous people known as the gypsies of the sea who live in houses on the water)

 

 

Koh Phi Phi Leh

At only 1.5 kms. South of Phi Phi Don we arrive at one of the most exuberant islands of the World and a true wonder of nature. It is undoubtedly the best excursion to do in the area and the ideal is to do it early in the morning to avoid the huge tourist mass. The main course is Maya Bay, a beach surrounded by huge mountains and transparent turquoise waters. It is a pity that it is increasingly more crowded (the price of appearing on the big screen), because it is a unique scenario in the world that at least has to be seen once in a lifetime.

This excursion also usually includes a visit to Viking Cave, a cave in the north of the island within a cliff where you can see some famous paintings of some sailors who took refuge in the cave during a storm or the well-known nests of very desirable swallows for the Chinese culture for its health properties and especially for the skin. Some boats also make a short stop at Pileh Cove to snorkel. The tours usually last about 4-6 hours and depart from Phi Phi Don but from my point of view it is best to agree on a price in Tonsai taking a long tail boat for you alone and enjoy at your pace the overwhelming beauty of this island.

 

Koh Pai (Bamboo Island)

About 5 kilometers north of Phi Phi Don, Bamboo Island is the ideal destination for those who seek authentic relaxation or diving between seabed full of impressive coral reefs, such as Hin Klang, which is marketed from the idea of being swimming like inside an aquarium. This heart-shaped island is much flatter than the surrounding islands, without elevated rock formations or cliffs, which makes it somewhat less attractive to tourists and therefore much quieter, and one day is more than enough to discover it and enjoy your feeling of relaxation, although it also has a campsite for those who wish to extend their stay. To get there you can negotiate a long tail boat in Tonsai for about 1000 Baths and the trip can take up to an hour.

 

 

Koh Yung (Mosquito Island), Bida Nok and Bida Nai

Since 2017, access to Mosquito Island has been closed with the aim of preserving and renovating its coral reefs. However, on our way to or from Bamboo Island we can ask the people of the long tail boat to stop us at one of its wonderful nearby waters to snorkel or take a bath and to take us around to get around it and be able to admire its beautiful rock formations.

Bida Nok and Bida Nai are two small islets located at 1.5 km. south of Phi Phi Leh, which can not be accessed but which are part of the usual routes as usual spots to see zebra sharks and scuba diving. Many of these tours are contracted directly in Phi Phi Don, in the same bay of Tonsai.

 

 

Accommodation in Phi Phi

Although some smaller islands may have some small accommodation or camping offer, the ideal is to make Phi Phi Don our center of operations: the hotel offer is much better and more extensive, and we can always move from there on excursions, water taxi , long tail boat or tours to the surrounding islands.

As I said, there are two large areas to stay and in each of them we found very good options (although it is important to note that both areas have their pros and cons: the northern area has higher category accommodation but does not allow access to the area of shops and restaurants on the island at night and the most central area of Tonsai Beach has more modest hotels but has a greater range of leisure), here I leave some accommodations that I loved in each of them:

 

In Tonsai Beach

• PP Princess Pool Villas, with villas next to the beach (some with own pool) and a perfect location in the center of everything, for € 90 per night.

• PP Palmtree Resort, 5 minutes walk from the port, offers modern decorated rooms, very large and comfortable, in the center. They serve an abundant American breakfast, and the prices are around € 60 per night.

 

In the North of the island
