Ciao Ragazzi!

Volvemos tras el pequeño break con todos los detalles de nuestra aventura Toscana… que ya os adelanto que ha sido increíble! Hemos pasado unos días inolvidables rodeados de viñedos y paisajes de ensueño en los que daban ganas de buscarse un pequeño terreno y quedarse a vivir para siempre…

La Toscana ha sido siempre uno de mis grandes viajes soñados y me alegro de haber podido tacharlo de mi Bucket List. Imaginaba vivir esa experiencia única entre campos, vinos y paisajes y ver el amanecer en los campos de viñedos envueltos en esa característica bruma (y el 12 de Mayo, a la salida del sol, por fin pude hacerlo realidad!).

Pero esta región es enormemente rica y extensa, requiere tiempo para poder conocer todos sus rincones y me han quedado muchos lugares por visitar como Cortona, de la que me enamoré en la película Bajo el Sol de la Toscana, el Valle di Chianti, Monteriggioni, Pitigliano, Montefioralle, Montalcino o Pienza. Así que habrá que volver pronto para seguir descubriendo sus secretos y vivir nuevas aventuras…  

Esta vasta región ocupa la superficie central de Italia y su capital es la ciudad de Florencia, pero además comprende otras provincias como:

• La provincia de Siena, donde se encuentra San Gimignano, nuestro centro de operaciones
• La provincia de Pisa, en la que destaca no solo la famosa ciudad con su torre inclinada sino pueblos maravillosos como el de Volterra
• La provincia de Arezzo, con pueblos históricos como Cortona o Anghiari
• La provincia de Livorno, asomada al mar y con la famosa Isla de Elba
• La provincia de Lucca, con su ciudad amurallada y pueblos con preciosas playas
• La provincia de Pistoia, en la que destacan Montecatini o Monsummano
• La provincia de Massa Carrara, conocida mundialmente por su mármol
• La provincia de Pratto, popular por sus textiles
• Y finalmente Grosetto, donde los etruscos se asentaron en la antigüedad

Por lo tanto, es un destino que da para mucho: se pueden realizar diferentes rutas y se pueden pensar diferentes tipos de viaje. Nosotros contábamos con pocos días y queríamos una ruta orientada a disfrutar especialmente de sus paisajes, sus vinos y su gastronomía… en base a ello planificamos un recorrido muy específico por las provincias de Siena y Pisa visitando San Gimignano, Volterra, Certaldo y finalmente la ciudad de Pisa –que yo personalmente no conocía– que además fue la ciudad desde la que volamos de vuelta a casa. En total, 6 días de viaje que, a pesar de haber disfrutado enormemente, nos animan a volver pronto y seguir conociendo nuevos rincones.

 

Nuestra Ruta por la Toscana

 

1. De Pisa a San Gimignano

Nada más aterrizar en Pisa decidimos ir directamente a San Gimignano, un pueblo que nos moríamos por conocer y uno de los más bonitos de la Toscana, con sus peculiares rascacielos medievales y sus calles llenas de encanto. Para llegar a San Gimignano desde Pisa no existe un transporte directo más allá del taxi, es necesario coger un tren hasta Pogginbosi haciendo un cambio de tren en Empoli y desde Pogginbosi coger el autobús hacia San Gimignano, aproximadamente unas 2h-2,5h de viaje. Como queríamos exprimir al máximo nuestro tiempo en la zona,finalmente optamos por coger un transfer directo desde el aeropuerto que contratamos previamente en Ziptransfers y que en una hora y por 120€ nos dejó en la misma puerta de nuestro alojamiento.

 

2. San Gimignano

San Gimignano es uno de los pueblos más emblemáticos de la Toscana y no nos arrepentimos en absoluto de haberlo escogido para alojarnos durante nuestro viaje: una localidad medieval llena de plazas, iglesias, calles mágicas y unas vistas espectaculares de la campiña y de los viñedos que tuvimos la suerte de disfrutar cada día desde nuestra habitación. Era un excelente centro de operaciones para visitar los alrededores y siempre estaba animado, además nos permitió hacer caminatas por los anillos exteriores e incluso pudimos recorrer una parte de la Via Francigena que fue uno de los grandes hitos del viaje.

Hay dos grandes puertas que dan acceso al centro histórico de San Gimignano: la puerta de San Giovanni y la puerta de San Matteo, que dan a dos calles con el mismo nombre que convergen en dos grandes plazas desde las que admirar las icónicas torres de la ciudad. Nosotros subimos por la calle San Giovanni hasta la céntrica Piazza della Cisterna, donde estaba nuestro alojamiento.

Piazza della Cisterna

Es uno de los lugares más concurridos y animados de San Gimignano, y en ella destaca la codiciada fuente central en la que todos quieren hacerse la foto, que en realidad es una antigua cisterna acabada en la boca de un pozo travertino y situada sobre una base octogonal. La plaza tiene forma triangular y en uno de sus vértices comunica con otra de las grandes plazas de la ciudad, la Piazza del Duomo. 

Este lugar es ideal para hacer un alto en el camino y disfrutar de uno de los principales reclamos de la ciudad: tomar un helado de la famosa Gelateria Dondoli, campeona del Mundo por tener los mejores helados en varios años. En ella había helados de infinidad de sabores, a cuál más original, y con precios muy asequibles a pesar de su fama mundial. Cada día se formaban largas colas a sus puertas y el propio maestro heladero, Sergio Dondoli, salía a amenizar la espera haciéndose fotos con los clientes. A nosotros nos encantaba sentarnos en la Caffetería Dell’Olmo a tomar un café y ver cómo entretenía a los turistas, todo un showman!

 

Piazza del Duomo

Esta plaza, pegada a la anterior, es mucho más señorial y en ella se concentran monumentos como la Collegiata con su gran escalinata, el Palazzo Comunale con el Salón de Dante, la Iglesia de Santa María Asunta, el Palazzo Vecchio del Podestá con la Torre Rognosa, la Torre Chigo, las gemelas Torri dei Salvucci y la Loggia del Comune flanqueada por la Torre Grossa, la más alta, a la que se podía subir para ver la ciudad desde las alturas sorteando sus 217 escalones y 54 metros de altura.

 

Disfrutando San Gimignano

Lo mejor para descubrir San Gimignano es perderse entre sus bonitas calles y cuestas empinadas, tanto dentro como fuera de las murallas, y disfrutar de sus pequeños rincones. Nos gustaron muchos de ellos y sacamos buen partido de sus cafés, terrazas y restaurantes, os dejo aquí una selección de nuestros sitios preferidos:

El paseo de la muralla y la enoteca DiVinorum: estaban justo debajo del balcón de nuestra habitación por lo que tuvimos el privilegio de disfrutar de sus vistas cada día, además de unos amaneceres espectaculares. La Enoteca DiVinorum es una enoteca situada en la Piazza della Cisterna pero que tiene “truco“: cuenta con otra puerta trasera en la calle paralela que cuenta con unas vistas inigualables a la campiña. Además, permite disfrutarlas “a la italiana“ junto a sus deliciosas bruschette, vinos de Chianti y aperitivos toscanos. Un momento muy especial del viaje en el que te sientes inmerso en el auténtico dolce far niente, relajado y rodeado de belleza.

La fuente medieval, un lugar totalmente silencioso en el que solo se escucha el sonido del agua, ideal para descansar y desconectar del bullicio del centro. Además,el camino te regala sorpresas como ésta: una panorámica única de las torres desde abajo.

La vía Francigena es una de las cosas que más disfrutamos: la ruta toma su nombre de ser la ruta de peregrinación entre Roma y Francia, cuenta en su totalidad con más de 250 kms. y 15 etapas, y recorre la región de norte a sur desde la Lunigiana a la Maremma pasando por la Lucchesia, el Val d`Elsa y le Crete Senesi, entre paisajes espectaculares. Justo en San Gimignano hay un tramo que recorrimos hasta Santa Luzia, en un trayecto de 2,5 kms. pasando por spots panorámicos desde los que divisar el pueblo. Muy recomendable.

Trattorias, restaurantes y sitios para salir a tomar algo

He de reconocer que en San Gimignano es en uno de los sitios que más hemos disfrutado de la comida, de los vinos y de la oferta gastronómica de la ciudad. Aunque en cualquier sitio se come muy bien, esta serían nuestras recomendaciones:

Restaurante Bel Soggiorno: lo elegimos para celebrar una ocasión especial y no nos defraudó, ya no solo por sus vistas sino especialmente por su comida. Sus piccis Bel Soggiorno, con trufa, son únicos, y pasamos un momento irrepetible que nunca olvidaremos. Lo encontraréis en la Calle San Giovanni, justo entrando desde la puerta de San Giovanni caminando hacia la Piazza della Cisterna.

Trattoria Rigoletto: situada justo en la puerta de San Giovanni pero ya fuera de la muralla, esta trattoria nos sorprendió por su autenticidad y la calidad de sus platos en un ambiente muy animado, familiar, agradable y acogedor. Cualquiera de sus pizzas era una auténtica maravilla y la pasta al dente y con un sabor especial. Todo un éxito.

 

Sosta Sulla Francigena: tras nuestra caminata por la Via Francigena y llegando ya a San Gimignano, encontramos este lugar privilegiado a la entrada de la ciudad en el que tomar un vino, un refresco o comer bajo sus sombrillas mirando la campiña. Nos gustó por su tranquilidad y por su panorámica, y aunque no llegamos a comer allí, los platos tenían bastante buena pinta.

 

Dormir en San Gimignano

Os dejo tres recomendaciones de alojamiento: uno en pleno centro de la ciudad y otros dos situados en los alrededores para vivir la experiencia más rural y auténtica en los viñedos toscanos:

1. Albergo Cisterna: en mitad de la Piazza della Cisterna, este hotel tiene habitaciones con unas vistas espectaculares y un restaurante con cocina local deliciosa. Es un palacete antiguo elegante en el que se respira autenticidad por todas las esquinas y con un desayuno completo con vistas a los campos de la Toscana. Unos 100€ la noche.

 

2. Casale Gregoriano: a 1,9kms del centro y en plena Via Francigena, esta finca de piedra con piscina hace sentir la auténtica atmósfera italiana y familiar en mitad de la campiña. Está relativamente cerca del pueblo pero ofrece mayor recogimiento y sensación de desconexión, además de tener un desayuno copioso y abundante con productos locales en el jardín por las mañanas. Unos 90€ la noche.

 

3. Agriturismo Il Segretto di Piedrafitta: esta propiedad del Siglo XV con habitaciones de estilo mediterráneo es una de las más bonitas y espectaculares de la zona. Rodeada de viñas, campos de lavanda y el típico paisaje de la zona, es uno de los lugares que mejor representan la experiencia Toscana. Eso sí, es indispensable tener coche ya que se encuentra a unos 2,5kms. de San Gimignano. Su precio ronda los 160€ la noche.

 

 

3. Volterra

Volterra es un pueblecito encantador a menos de 30 kms. de San Gimignano ubicado en la cima de una colina típicamente Toscana y sus dimensiones permiten disfrutarla en menos de un día, por lo que es una visita bastante interesante si estáis por la zona. Se ha vuelto bastante popular y conocida desde que salió como escenario en la película Luna Nueva, de la saga Crepúsculo, pero en realidad lo que destaca de ella son sus murallas etruscas y su capacidad para trasladarte inmediatamente a otra época. Alberga su propio Duomo, un museo arqueológico, un teatro romano, un palacio medieval con su propia pinacoteca y una fortaleza Medici.  Como curiosidades, la ciudad destaca por la piedra de alabastro y existen mil tiendas que ofrecen souvenirs de este peculiar mineral, y su famoso Palazzo dei Priori sirvió como inspiración para construir el Palazzo Vecchio de Florencia.

Lo mejor en Volterra es sentarse en la Piazza dei Priori a tomarse un helado o comer en restaurantes como la Osteria Fornelli comiendo un rissotto espectacular con unas vistas inigualables o simplemente disfrutar de la puesta de sol con uno de los vinos de su extensa carta, o la Trattoria la Carabaccia con su sencilla pero deliciosa cocina local.

Para alojarse en Volterra, el Albergo Etruria es uno de los mejores valorados por su localización (justo al lado de la Piazza dei Priori), por su jardín interior y sus vistas, además de por un desayuno buffet con productos frescos y de la zona. Todo por unos 75€ la noche.

 

4. Certaldo

Situado a unos 13 kms. de distancia de San Gimignano y unos 35 kms. de Florencia, Certaldo es otro de los pueblos indispensables en la Toscana cuna de Bocaccio, mucho menos masificado y menos visitado por los turistas. A la parte baja del pueblo se puede llegar tanto en coche como en tren, y su casco histórico es Certaldo Alto: se llama así porque se sitúa en lo alto de la ciudad y para llegar a él hay que realizar un trayecto de un minuto máximo en funicular desde la Piazza Bocaccio o bien subir un empinado camino. También es posible dejar el coche en la parte alta de la ciudad si te hospedas en el Albergo Il Castelo, ya que ofrecen un parking exclusivo para sus clientes. Una vez arriba, nos encontramos un pueblo medieval precioso donde los principales atractivos son el Palazzo Pretorio con su fachada llena de escudos y la Casa Museo de Bocaccio. 

Pero en realidad, lo mejor es disfrutar de sus acogedores cafés, terrazas y restaurantes, sobre todo de los que ofrecen las mejores vistas de los alrededores y hasta de las torres de San Gimignano como las que se tienen desde la terraza del restaurante Antica Fonte, muy cercano al Palazzo Pretorio.

Para alojarse en Certaldo, la Antica Torre del Borgo es un bed and breakfast pero con esencia de hotel boutique, un alojamiento precioso en el centro de Certaldo en el que sirven un auténtico desayuno italiano y con precios que rondan los 95€ la noche.

 

5. Pisa

Nuestra última etapa del viaje fue Pisa, en la que pasamos tan solo un día, pero un día totalmente exprimido y aprovechado: nos dio la sensación de que habíamos tenido tiempo de verlo todo y que no hacía falta dedicarle mucho más. Lo más importante y lo que estaba deseando ver: la Piazza dei Miracoli con la famosa torre inclinada de Pisa (a la que se puede subir estando allí en grupos de 30 en 30 personas o reservando online con antelación), el Duomo, el Baptisterio y el Campo Santo o cementerio municipal.

Pero más allá de esta plaza y de hacerse la foto graciosa de turno sujetando la torre, Pisa cuenta con otros grandes atractivos como la Parroquia de San Antonio Abad cercana a la estación de trenes con el Tuttomundo (una obra formada por 30 figuras acopladas representando la paz y la armonía en el Mundo), el Ponte Soferino sobre el río Arno (a cuyas orillas se puede dar un agradable paseo por la tarde), el Palazzo Agostini, el Ayuntamiento, el mercado local de la Piazza delle Vettovaglie donde hacer una parada a tomar algo en sus bares y tabernas, la Chiesa di San Michele in Borgo, la Piazza Dante Alighieri y la Piazza dei Cavalieri con el Palazzo della Caravana… todo ello como os digo puede hacerse tranquilamente en un día dando un paseo tranquilo por la ciudad. Y para vivir el auténtico ambiente de Pisa, algunas recomendaciones:

• La calle del Borgo Stretto, que continua después de la gran calle comercial Corso Italia tras cruzar el río por el centro histórico: lleno de restaurantes, cafés, pastelerías y tiendas tradicionales, es una zona con mucho encanto.
• La Piazza Chiara Gambacorti, que nos sorprendió tras el ajetreo de las grandes arterias de la ciudad con varias terrazas tranquilas y con una atmósfera muy especial. Es ideal para hacer un alto en el camino a tomar algo, como por ejemplo en el Eleven Cafe, donde tienen una extensa carta de gintonics y vinos.

Para comer o cenar, son muy recomendables Il Peperoncino, al lado de la torre (pedid los pici al tartuffo, mmmm!) y La Cantina di Tipì, algo escondido en el centro histórico dentro de una callejuela estrecha, pero con productos locales exquisitos y una carta excelente de vinos y cervezas (aquí hay que pedirse el tagliere di tipi o la mozzarella di buffala gratinada)

Para alojarse en Pisa, nos pareció que la mejor zona era la zona del río, ya que estaba justo a la mitad de camino de todo y en pleno centro de la ciudad. Sin embargo, si tenéis un vuelo temprano es recomendable alojarse en la zona de la estación de tren Pisa Centrale, ya que desde ella salen cada 20 minutos los trenes PisaMover que en tan solo 5 minutos te dejan en las terminales por 2,70€.

En la zona del río, una buena opción es Mediceo 42, moderno y en plena orilla del Arno, cerca de todo, por 80€ la noche.

Justo al lado de la Piazza dei Miracoli, a tan solo 50m. de la Torre Inclinada de Pisa, el Relais I Miracoli Residenza d’Epoca  tiene habitaciones por unos 120€ con unas vistas espectaculares de la torre.

Y finalmente, en la zona de la estación de tren, el NH Pisa es una opción convenience y muy cómoda para no tener que ir cargando con las maletas por toda la ciudad. Unos 100€ la habitación.

We return after the little break with all the details of our Tuscan adventure … I already tell you that it has been incredible! We have spent some unforgettable days surrounded by vineyards and dreamy landscapes in which they wanted to find a small plot of land and stay to live forever …

Tuscany has always been one of my great dreamed trips and I’m glad I could cross it out of my Bucket List. I imagined living that unique experience between fields, wines and landscapes and seeing the sunrise in the fields of vineyards wrapped in that characteristic mist (and May 12, at sunrise, I could finally make it come true!).

But this region is enormously rich and extensive, it takes time to get to know all its corners and I have many places to visit as Cortona, which I fell in love with in the film Under the Sun of Tuscany, the Valle di Chianti, Monteriggioni, Pitigliano, Montepulciano, Montefioralle, Montalcino or Pienza. So we will have to return soon to continue discovering its secrets and living new adventures …

This vast region occupies the central area of ​​Italy and its capital is the city of Florence, but also includes other provinces such as:

We had a few days and we wanted a route oriented to enjoy especially its landscapes, its wines and its gastronomy … based on it we planned a very specific route through the provinces of Siena and Pisa visiting San Gimignano, Volterra, Certaldo and finally the city of Pisa -which I personally did not know- that was also the city from which we flew back home. In total, 6 days of travel that, despite having greatly enjoyed, encourage us to return soon and continue to meet new corners.

 

Our route through Tuscany

1. From Pisa to San Gimignano

As soon as we landed in Pisa we decided to go directly to San Gimignano, a town we were dying to meet and one of the most beautiful in Tuscany, with its peculiar medieval skyscrapers and its streets full of charm. To get to San Gimignano from Pisa there is no direct transport beyond the taxi, it is necessary to take a train to Pogginbosi making a change of train in Empoli and from Pogginbosi take the bus to San Gimignano, approximately 2h-2.5h trip . As we wanted to make the most of our time in the area, we finally decided to take a direct transfer from the airport that we previously hired at Ziptransfers and that in 1 hour and for € 120 left us at the door of our accommodation.

 

2. San Gimignano

San Gimignano is one of the most emblematic towns of Tuscany and we do not regret having chosen it at all during our trip: a medieval town full of squares, churches, magical streets and spectacular views of the countryside and vineyards that We were lucky to enjoy every day from our room. It was an excellent center of operations to visit the surroundings and was always lively, it also allowed us to make walks through the outer rings and we could even walk a part of the Via Francigena that was one of the great landmarks of the trip.

There are two large doors that give access to the historic center of San Gimignano: the San Giovanni Gate and the San Matteo Gate, which overlook two streets with the same name that converge in two large squares from which to admire the iconic towers of the city. We went up the street San Giovanni to the central Piazza della Cisterna, where our accommodation was.

Piazza della Cisterna

It is one of the busiest and lively places in San Gimignano, and it highlights the coveted central fountain where everyone wants to take a photo, which is actually an old cistern finished at the mouth of a travertine well and located on a base octagonal The square has a triangular shape and in one of its vertices it communicates with another of the great squares of the city, the Piazza del Duomo.

This place is ideal to make a stop along the way and enjoy one of the main attractions of the city: take an ice cream from the famous Gelateria Dondoli, world champion for having the best ice cream in several years. In her there were ice creams of infinity of flavors, to which more original, and with very accessible prices in spite of its world-wide fame. Every day there were long lines at its doors and the master ice cream man, Sergio Dondoli, went out to liven up the wait by taking pictures with the customers. We loved sitting in the Caffeteria Del Olmo to have a coffee and see how it entertained tourists, a showman!

 

Piazza del Duomo

This square, next to the previous one, is much more manorial and it concentrates monuments such as the Collegiata with its grand staircase, the Palazzo Comunale with the Dante Hall, the Church of Santa María Asunta, the Palazzo Vecchio del Podestá with the Tower Rognosa, the Torre Chigo, the Torri dei Salvucci and the Loggia del Comune flanked by the Grossa Tower, the highest, which could be climbed to see the city from the heights, avoiding its 217 steps and 54 meters in height.

 

Enjoying San Gimignano

The best thing to discover San Gimignano is to get lost among its pretty streets and steep slopes, both inside and outside the walls, and enjoy its little corners. We liked many of them and we took good advantage of their cafes, terraces and restaurants, I leave here a selection of our favorite sites:

The wall walk and the DiVinorum wine bar: they were just below the balcony of our room so we had the privilege of enjoying the views every day, as well as spectacular sunrises. DiVinorum Wine Bar is located in Piazza della Cisterna but has a «trick«: it has another back door in the parallel street that has unparalleled views of the countryside. In addition, you can enjoy the «Italian style» with their delicious bruschette, Chianti wines and Tuscan appetizers. A very special moment of the trip in which you feel immersed in the authentic dolce far niente, relaxed and surrounded by beauty.

The medieval fountain, a totally silent place in which only the sound of water is heard, ideal to rest and disconnect from the hustle and bustle of the center. In addition, the road gives you surprises like this one: a unique panorama of the towers from below.

The Via Francigena is one of the things we enjoy the most: the route takes its name from being the pilgrimage route between Rome and France, it has a total of more than 250 km. and 15 stages, and crosses the region from north to south from the Lunigiana to the Maremma passing through the Lucchesia, the Val d`Elsa and the Crete Senesi, among spectacular landscapes. Right in San Gimignano there is a section that we traveled to Santa Luzia, in a journey of 2.5 kms. passing through panoramic spots from which to see the town. Highly recommended

Trattorias, restaurants and places to go out

I must admit that San Gimignano is one of the places we have enjoyed the most, the food, the wines and the gastronomic offer of the city. Although anywhere you eat very well, these would be our recommendations:

Restaurant Bel Soggiorno:  we chose it to celebrate a special occasion and it did not disappoint us, not only for its views but especially for its food. His piccis Bel Soggiorno (home made pasta with truffle) are unique, and we spent an unrepeatable moment that we will never forget. You will find it on San Giovanni Street, just entering from the San Giovanni door, walking towards Piazza della Cisterna.

Trattoria Rigoletto:  located right at the door of San Giovanni but already outside the wall, this trattoria surprised us for its authenticity and the quality of its dishes in a very lively, familiar, friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Any of their pizzas was an authentic marvel and the pasta al dente and with a special flavor. A success

 

Sosta Sulla Francigena: after our walk along the Via Francigena and arriving at San Gimignano, we find this privileged place at the entrance of the city where you can have a wine, a drink or eat under your umbrellas looking at the countryside. We liked it for its tranquility and for its panoramic view, and although we did not get to eat there, the dishes looked pretty good.

 

Sleep in San Gimignano

Three recommendations of accommodation: one in the heart of the city and two others located in the surroundings to live the most rural and authentic experience in the Tuscan vineyards:

1. Albergo Cisterna: in the middle of Piazza della Cisterna, this hotel has rooms with spectacular views and a restaurant with delicious local cuisine. It is an elegant old palace in which authenticity is breathed in every corner and with a full breakfast overlooking the fields of Tuscany. About € 100 a night.

 

2. Casale Gregoriano:  1.9kms from the city center and in the middle of Via Francigena, this stone finca with pool makes you feel the authentic Italian and family atmosphere in the middle of the countryside. It is relatively close to the town but offers more seclusion and a feeling of disconnection, in addition to having an abundant breakfast with local products in the garden in the mornings. About € 90 a night.

 

3. Agriturismo Il Segretto di Piedrafitta:  this 15th century property with Mediterranean style rooms is one of the most beautiful and spectacular in the area. Surrounded by vineyards, lavender fields and the typical landscape of the area, it is one of the places that best represent the Tuscan experience. Of course, it is essential to have a car because it is a little further away from everything, about 2.5kms. of San Gimignano. Its price is around € 160 per night.

 

 

3. Volterra

Volterra is a charming little town less than 30 kms away. of San Gimignano located on the top of a typically Tuscan hill and its dimensions allow you to enjoy it in less than a day, so it is a very interesting visit if you are in the area. It has become quite popular and known since it came out as the setting in the movie New Moon, of the Twilight series, but in fact what stands out of it are its Etruscan walls and its ability to move immediately to another era. It houses its own Duomo, an archaeological museum, a Roman theater, a medieval palace with its own gallery and a Medici fortress. As curiosities, the city stands out for the alabaster stone and there are a thousand shops that offer souvenirs of this peculiar mineral, and its famous Palazzo dei Priori served as inspiration to build the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

The best thing to do in Volterra is to sit in the Piazza dei Priori for an ice cream or eat in restaurants like the Osteria Fornelli eating a spectacular rissotto with unbeatable views or simply enjoying the sunset with one of the wines from its extensive wine menu,or the Trattoria la Carabaccia with its simple but delicious local cuisine.

To stay in Volterra, Albergo Etruria is one of the best valued for its location (right next to Piazza dei Priori), for its interior garden and its views, as well as for a buffet breakfast with fresh products from the area. All for about € 75 a night.

 

4. Certaldo

Located about 13 kms. away from San Gimignano and about 35 kms. of Florence, Certaldo is another indispensable village in Tuscany cradle of Bocaccio, much less crowded and less visited by tourists. The lower part of the town can be reached either by car or by train, and its historic center is Certaldo Alto: it is so called because it is located at the top of the city and to reach it you have to make a journey of one minute maximum by cable car from Piazza Bocaccio or go up a steep path. It is also possible to leave the car in the upper part of the city if you stay in the Albergo Il Castello,since they offer an exclusive parking for their clients. Once above, we find a beautiful medieval town where the main attractions are the Palazzo Pretorio with its façade full of coats of arms and the Bocaccio’s House Museum.

But in reality, the best thing is to enjoy its cozy cafes, terraces and restaurants, especially those that offer the best views of the surroundings and even the towers of San Gimignano as they are from the terrace of the Antica Fonte restaurant, very close to the Palazzo Pretorio.

To stay in Certaldo, Antica Torre del Borgo is a bed and breakfast with the essence of a boutique hotel, a beautiful accommodation in the center of Certaldo where they serve an authentic Italian breakfast and with prices around € 95 per night.

 

5. Pisa

Our last stage of the trip was Pisa, in which we spent just one day, but one day totally squeezed and used: it gave us the feeling that we had time to see everything and that it was not necessary to dedicate much more. The most important thing and what I was looking forward to seeing: the Piazza dei Miracoli with the famous leaning tower of Pisa (which can be reached by being there in groups of 30 in 30 people or booking online in advance), the Duomo, the Baptistery and the Holy Field or municipal cemetery.

But beyond this square and to make the funny picture of the tower, Pisa has other great attractions such as the Parish of San Antonio Abad near the train station with the Tuttomundo (a work formed by 30 figures coupled representing the peace and the harmony in the World), Ponte Soferino over the Arno River (on whose banks you can take a pleasant walk in the afternoon), the Palazzo Agostini, the Town Hall, the local market of the Piazza delle Vettovaglie where to stop for a drink in its bars and taverns, the Chiesa di San Michele in Borgo, the Piazza Dante Alighieri and the Piazza dei Cavalieri with the Palazzo della Caravana … everything as I say can be done quietly in a day taking a quiet stroll through the city. And to experience the authentic atmosphere of Pisa, some great recommendations:

• The street Borgo Stretto, that continues after the great shopping street Corso Italia after crossing the river through the historic center: full of restaurants, cafes, patisseries and traditional shops, it is a charming area.
• Piazza Chiara Gambacorti, surprised us after the hustle and bustle of the city’s main arteries with several quiet terraces and a very special atmosphere. It is ideal to make a stop on the way to take something, as for example in the Eleven Cafe, where they had a good menu of gintonics and wines.

And for lunch or dinner, they are highly recommended Il Peperoncino, next to the tower (ask for the pici al tartufo, mmmm!) and La Cantina di Tipì, hidden in the historic center inside a narrow alley, but with exquisite local products and a huge menu of wines and beers (here you have to order the tagliere di tipi or the mozzarella di buffala au gratin)

To stay in Pisa, we thought that the best area was the river area, since it was just half way to everything and in the very center of the city. However, if you have an early flight it is advisable to stay in the area of the Pisa Centrale train station, since PisaMover  trains depart every 20 minutes from there and in just 5 minutes they leave you at the terminals for 2.70 €.

In the river area, a good option is Mediceo 42, modern and in the middle of the Arno, close to everything, for € 80 per night.

Right next to Piazza dei Miracoli, only 50m. of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Relais I Miracoli Residenza d’Epoca has rooms for about € 120 with privileged views of the tower.

Finally, in the train station area, NH Pisa is a convenient option so that you do not have to carry your suitcases all over the city. About € 100 per room.
