Una de las cosas que tenía más claras cuando empecé a planificar el viaje a Costa Rica era que Monteverde era indispensable. Caminar por los puentes colgantes del Bosque Nuboso ha formado parte de mi lista de deseos desde siempre y sabía que no podía perderme la experiencia… que resultó ser todavía mucho mejor de lo que me imaginaba!

Que no os engañe… visto en el mapa se puede decir que Monteverde está prácticamente al lado de Arenal, pero en realidad el trayecto es bastante largo. Sobre esto tengo sentimientos encontrados, ya que es cierto que se hace a veces interminable, pero en contrapartida permite disfrutar de una zona totalmente inesperada a la que llaman la Suiza de Costa Rica, donde a medida que se avanza bordeando el Lago Arenal aparece un paisaje montañoso rodeado de pastos y casones… un ambiente muy diferente que casi asocias más con Suiza o Asturias que con Costa Rica.  Nos comentaron – a posteriori – que había una alternativa más corta de itinerario atravesando el Lago Arenal, si estás barajando ir desde Arenal no olvidéis de buscarla porque os ahorraréis como una hora de viaje.

El camino a Monteverde es elevado y escarpado, y permite ver verdaderas maravillas como éstas que nos encontramos a nuestro paso…

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

En mitad del camino hicimos una parada en un café de carretera que se llamaba Café y Macadamia… un lugar con muchísimo encanto y con unas vistas privilegiadas del lago. No olvidéis parar allí para admirarlo!

A medida que vas avanzando, empiezas a notar no sólo que el paisaje va mutando, sino también que las temperaturas bajan… en Monteverde suele hacer un poco más de frío y el clima habitual es más lluvioso. La temperatura media es de unos 17 grados y los vientos alisios traen toda la humedad de la zona del Caribe. Acordaros de llevar ropa de abrigo y chubasquero, ya que en esta zona lo usaréis con mayor frecuencia.

Santa Elena

Santa Elena es el bonito pueblo en el que se concentra la vida de Monteverde. Los hoteles suelen situarse en la carretera y éste actúa como centro de operaciones. Animada y acogedora, esta pequeña localidad está rodeada de naturaleza, cuenta con tiendas, bares, restaurantes, supermercados… y es ideal para descansar por las tardes tras las excursiones con una buena taza de café calentita. Aquí estuvimos en varios sitios que nos encantaron:

Choco Café

Justo enfrente del Centro Comercial, este pintoresco café en el que también se sirven comidas destaca por su estructura de madera de cabaña y una bonita terraza en la que nos sentábamos al solecito para degustar su variedad de cafés, chocolate o incluso algún zumo. Aquí sirven desayunos y los mejores postres de la zona como el carrot cake o el brownie, y los camareros te atienden con una sonrisa de oreja a oreja. Dentro tienen también una pequeña tienda en la que comprar el delicioso café o chocolate costarricense. En definitiva, uno de nuestros musts.

 

Sabor Tico

El lugar en el que mejor comimos en Monteverde fue Sabor Tico. Nos lo recomendaron varios guías y, tras el éxito de las recomendaciones de los guías de Arenal, decidimos probarlo. Nos dimos un festival culinario pidiendo entre nuestros platos el tradicional casado costarricense, que estaba espectacular. El restaurante está siempre abarrotado y no me extraña por lo sabroso de sus platos y los precios tan asequibles que tienen. Riquísimo todo!!!

 

Monteverde Beer House

Otro de los sitios en los que pasamos largos ratos fue el Monteverde Beer House, donde servían cervezas artesanales y platos mediterráneos con bastante buena pinta. El local era precioso y además contaba con una tiendecita de artesanía con cosas muy bonitas. Su carta de cervezas era bastante original: tenían desde IPAs y Ales hasta la “Chili Beer“ (picante) o la Piña Blonde. Muy recomendable.

 

Tree House

Como su nombre dice, este restaurante está en lo alto de la copa de un árbol y es simplemente espectacular. Suelen tener música en directo y siempre está animado, merece la pena pasarse un rato a disfrutar de lo bonito del lugar y de su ambiente. Eso sí, sus precios son un poco más elevados… es un sitio especial y romántico ideal para tomar algo, pero si tenéis hambre y queréis comer muy bien a buenos precios es mejor irse a Sabor Tico.

 

El Bosque Nuboso

La Reserva Biológica del Bosque Nuboso de Monteverde es un lugar excepcional que te deja sin respiración. Aquí la naturaleza se muestra en su máxima expresión y, según nos contaron, es un lugar al que le queda poco tiempo para poderse mostrar tal cual está ahora debido al cambio climático, por lo que hay que darse prisa en visitarlo para poder admirarlo en toda su grandeza. Es considerado el bosque nuboso más reconocido del mundo por su increíble biodiversidad (supone un 2,5% de la biodiversidad mundial y alberga el 50% de las especies de flora y fauna de Costa Rica). Ya solo con estas credenciales es imposible no visitarlo, pero si además le añades incentivos como los ocho puentes colgantes de Selvatura Park, el mariposario o el jardín de los colibríes, ya es obligatorio.

A lo largo de nuestra caminata por la reserva vimos de todo: serpientes, coatíes, tucanes y aves de todo tipo, monos, plantas y árboles impresionantes… se nos hizo cortísima a pesar de dedicarle casi toda la mañana!!

 

Puentes Colgantes de Selvatura

Selvatura es uno de los eco parques más famoso de Monteverde y sus puentes colgantes son uno de los principales motivos. Se trata de ocho impresionantes puentes de diferentes longitudes y alturas (van desde los 50 hasta los 170 metros de largo y desde los 12 hasta los 60 metros de alto) que atraviesan los diferentes desniveles del bosque. No hay mejor manera de disfrutar de esta zona que desde lo alto de los puentes, asomándonos a la vegetación, cruzándonos con los monos o atravesando a veces tramos de las densas nubes. Cruzarlos todos nos llevó en torno a una hora y media/ dos horas y para mí fue una de las experiencias más increíbles de mi vida.

 

Jardín de colibríes y Jardín de Mariposas

También en Selvatura vais a poder mezclaros entre cientos de colibríes que vuelan a sus anchas a tu alrededor entre los comederos que les preparan con néctar. Son unas de las aves más rápidas que existen y es muy difícil poder observarlas tan de cerca, incluso si acercáis la mano llegan a posarse sin miedo sobre ella… son unos de mis animales preferidos y aluciné de poder admirar sus brillantes colores y descubrir diferentes especies en vivo y en directo: el colibrí morado, el insigne, el esmeralda capirotada, el colirrayado… Otro gran momento que me llevo de este viaje.

Para terminar con la visita, os van a llevar a un enorme invernadero donde crían y protegen a unas 25 especies de mariposas a una temperatura idónea. Mientras vas caminando entre las plantas puedes ir observando los brillantes colores de sus alas, e incluso puedes ver de cerca a la mariposa morpho, de color parduzco con las alas cerradas pero con un azul brillante alucinante cuando las abre.

 

Canopy

Y termino con una actividad de las que hay que hacer al menos una vez en la vida… Canopy en Monteverde! Dicen que es el mejor Canopy que se puede hacer en Costa Rica (aunque como ya os conté, en Tortuguero discrepan…), y la verdad es que es impresionante vivir la sensación de sobrevolar la selva en tirolinas que llegan hasta el kilómetro de longitud, rodeado de vegetación por todos los lados y atravesando los sonidos salvajes de la naturaleza. En total, son unas 2h- 2,30h de pura adrenalina.

Rutas del Café y del Chocolate

En Monteverde suelen montar tours para presenciar cómo se elaboran los deliciosos cafés y chocolates de la zona. Visitar una finca productora de café te permite aprender sobre el proceso o incluso recolectarlo si es época de cosecha, así como degustar diferentes tipos y variedades como colofón. Uno de los más conocidos de la zona es el tour Don Juan, de unas 2 horas de duración, donde además se puede beber directamente el jugo de la caña de azúcar.

 

Alojamientos en Monteverde

Los hoteles de Monteverde se distribuyen a lo largo del pueblo y de la carretera y cuentan con unas vistas impresionantes de las montañas, son alojamientos inspirados en cabañas montañesas y tienen un encanto muy especial. Aquí mi Top 3 de la zona (de más próximos a menos cercanos a Santa Elena)

Hotel & Spa Poco a Poco 

Este hotel boutique en pleno centro de Santa Elena es simplemente precioso. Tiene una piscina circular con agua templada y un spa en el que relajarse tras las caminatas y excursiones por la zona, además de un restaurante bastante interesante para tomar platos tradicionales o internacionales. Decorado con muchísimo gusto, es una opción ideal para alojarse en Monteverde, por unos 115€ la noche.

 

El Establo Mountain View

Situado en un entorno idílico con vistas al bosque nuboso de Monteverde, este hotel está formado por cabañas abuhardilladas con balcones de estilo 100% montañés y también tiene una piscina al aire libre, un restaurante y un spa. El hotel organiza caminatas y paseos por las inmediaciones y destaca especialmente por su delicioso y copioso desayuno. Unos 125€ la habitación doble, y a un kilómetro aproximadamente de distancia del pueblo.

 

Hotel Belmar

Un alojamiento sostenible y exclusivo con un jardín ecológico y alojamientos en los que no falta ningún detalle: con su propio jacuzzi, salida de estar y terraza privada. Es el alojamiento de los tres que os recomiendo que está más lejos de Santa Elena (a unos 4 kms.), pero también el más lujoso y con mejores vistas de todos. Unos 180€ por noche.

 

Dresscode

Para ir a Monteverde hay que hacer un apartado específico en la maleta: las temperaturas bajan, el clima es nuboso y húmedo y la lluvia es más frecuente. Por ello, pensad en looks “de montaña“ y ropa más abrigada:

One of the things I had most clearly when I started planning the trip to Costa Rica was that Monteverde was indispensable. Walking the hanging bridges of the Cloud Forest has been part of my wish list forever and I knew I could not miss the experience … which turned out to be still much better than I imagined!

Do not be fooled … seen on the map it can be said that Monteverde is practically next to Arenal, but in reality the journey is quite long. About this I have mixed feelings, as it is true that it is sometimes interminable, but in return allows you to enjoy a totally unexpected area that is called the Switzerland of Costa Rica, where as you go along the Lake Arenal appears a landscape mountainous surrounded by pastures and houses … a very different environment that you almost associate more with Asturias than with Costa Rica. We were told – later – that there was a shorter route alternative crossing the Arenal Lake, if you are thinking about going there do not forget to look for it because you will save one hour of travel approximately.

The road to Monteverde is high and steep, and allows us to see true wonders like these…

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In the middle of the road we stopped at a road cafe called Café y Macadamia… a place with a lot of charm and with privileged views of the lake. You must stop there!

As you move forward, you begin to notice not only that the landscape is mutating, but also that temperatures drop … Monteverde is usually a bit colder and the climate is rainier. Its average temperature is about 17 degrees and the trade winds bring all the humidity of the Caribbean area. Remember to bring warm clothes and raincoat, since in this area you will use it more frequently.

Santa Elena

Santa Elena is the beautiful town where the life of Monteverde is concentrated. Hotels are usually located on the road and this acts as an strategical center to discover the surroundings. Animated and cozy, this small town is surrounded by nature and has shops, bars, restaurants, supermarkets … is ideal to relax in the afternoon after the excursions with a nice cup of warm coffee. Here some places we loved:

Choco Cafe

Just in front of the Shopping Center, this quaint café where meals are also served stands out for its wooden hut structure and a nice terrace where we sat in the sun to enjoy its variety of coffees, chocolates or even some juices. They also serve breakfast and the best desserts in the area, such as carrot cake or brownie, and the waiters serve you with a big smile. Inside you’ll find a small shop to buy the delicious Costa Rican coffee or chocolate. In short, one of our musts.

 

Sabor Tico

The place where we ate the best in Monteverde was Sabor Tico. We were recommended by several guides and, after the success of the recommendations of the Arenal guides, we decided to try it. We gave ourselves a culinary festival eating the traditional Costa Rican casado, which was spectacular. The restaurant was always crowded and I’m not surprised by how tasty their dishes are and how affordable they are. Delicious!

 

Monteverde Beer House

Another place where we spent long hours was Monteverde Beer House, where they served craft beers and Mediterranean dishes with quite good looks. The place was beautiful and also had a craft store with very nice things to buy. Their beer list was quite original: they had from IPAs and Ales to the «Chili Beer» (spicy) or the Blonde Pineapple. Highly recommended

Tree House

As its name says, this restaurant is high up on the top of a tree and is simply spectacular. They usually have live music and it is always lively, it is worth spending time to enjoy the beauty of the place and its atmosphere. Yes, their prices are a little higher … but it is a special and romantic place ideal for a drink (if you are hungry and want to eat very well at good prices it is better to go to Sabor Tico)

 

The Cloud Forest

The Biological Reserve of the Cloud Forest of Monteverde is an exceptional place that leaves you breathless. Here nature is at its best and, as they told us, it is a place that has little time to be able to show itself as it is now due to climate change, so you have to hurry to visit it to be able to admire it throughout its greatness. It is considered the most recognized cloud forest in the world for its incredible biodiversity (it accounts for 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity and houses 50% of the species of flora and fauna of Costa Rica). Only with these credentials is it impossible not to visit, but if you also add incentives such as the eight suspension bridges of Selvatura Park, the butterfly garden or the hummingbird garden, it is mandatory.

Throughout our walk through the reserve we saw everything: snakes, coatis, toucans and birds of all kinds, monkeys, plants and impressive trees … we were very short despite spending most of the morning!

 

Selvatura Hanging Bridges 

Selvatura is one of the most famous eco-parks in Monteverde and its hanging bridges are one of the main reasons. It consists of eight amazing bridges of different lengths and heights (ranging from 50 to 170 meters long and from 12 to 60 meters high) that cross the different slopes of the forest. There is no better way to enjoy this area than from the top of the bridges, looking out over the vegetation, crossing with the monkeys or sometimes crossing sections of the dense clouds. Crossing all the bridges took us about an hour and a half / two hours and for me it was one of the most impressive experiences of my life.

 

Hummingbird Garden and Butterfly Garden

Also in Selvatura you will be able to mix yourself among hundreds of hummingbirds that fly around in your surroundings among some feeders prepared with nectar. They are one of the fastest birds that exist and it is very difficult to observe them so close, even if you approach your hand they come to rest without fear on it … they are one of my favorite animals and I am amazed to be able to admire their bright colors and discover different species live and live: the purple hummingbird, the insigne, the emerald capirotada, the colirrayado … Another great moment that I take from this trip.

To end the visit, they will take you to a huge greenhouse where they raise and protect about 25 species of butterflies at a suitable temperature. While walking between the plants you can see the bright colors of its wings, and you can even see the morpho butterfly up close, with a brownish color with closed wings but an amazing bright blue when they’re open.

 

Canopy

And last, an activity that you have to do at least once in your life … Canopy in Monteverde! They say it is the best Canopy that can be done in Costa Rica (although as I told you, in Tortuguero they disagree …), and the truth is that it is impressive to live the sensation of flying over the jungle in zip lines that reach up to the kilometer of length, surrounded by vegetation on all sides and going through the wild sounds of nature. In total, they are about 2h- 2.30h of pure adrenaline.

Coffee and chocolate routes

In Monteverde they usually mount tours to witness how the delicious coffees and chocolates of the area are made. Visiting a coffee producing farm allows you to learn about the process or even collect it if it is harvest time, as well as taste different types and varieties as a colophon. One of the best known in the area is Don Juan tour, of about 2 hours, where you can also drink directly the juice of sugar cane.

 

Accomodations in Monteverde

The hotels of Monteverde are distributed throughout the town and the road and have stunning views of the mountains, are accommodations inspired by mountain cabins and have a very special charm. Here my Top 3 of the area (from closest to most distant to Santa Elena)

Poco a Poco Hotel & Spa 

This boutique hotel right in the center of Santa Elena is simply beautiful. It has a circular pool with warm water and a spa in which to relax after walks and excursions in the area, as well as a very interesting restaurant to take traditional or international dishes. Decorated with great pleasure, it is an ideal option to stay in Monteverde, for around €115 a night.

 

El Establo Mountain View

Located in an idyllic setting overlooking the cloud forest of Monteverde, this hotel is made up of attic cabins with 100% mountain-style balconies and also has an outdoor pool, a restaurant and a spa. The hotel organizes walks and walks in the immediate vicinity and stands out especially for its delicious and copious breakfast. About €125 for a double room, and about a kilometer away from the town.

 

Belmar Hotel

A sustainable and exclusive accommodation with an impressive ecological garden and accommodation in which there is no lack of detail: with its own jacuzzi, living room and private terrace. It is the accommodation of the three that I recommend that is further away from Santa Elena (about 4 kms.), But also the most luxurious and with the best views of all. About € 180 per night.

 

Dresscode

To go to Monteverde you have to make a specific section in the suitcase: the temperatures go down, the weather is cloudy and humid and the rain is more frequent. Therefore, think of «mountain looks“ and warmer clothes:
