Uno se acerca al final del viaje…pero el final es un objetivo, no una catástrofe – George Sand

Esta semana cerramos con cierta pena este viaje, uno de los que más nos ha gustado y más corto se nos ha quedado… a pesar de haber llenado nada más y nada menos que 5 posts! Hemos dejado para terminar las dos últimas paradas: Puntarenas y San José, aunque no por ello son menos interesantes.

Puntarenas 

Puntarenas era nuestra siguiente etapa tras Monteverde, un poco de playa y calor después de la montaña y el bosque nuboso. Se trata de la zona con uno de los puertos pesqueros más importantes y desde aquí salen los ferries hacia la Península de Nicoya con sus playas de arena blanca ideales para el surf. Aunque para la mayoría suele ser un lugar de paso, la verdad es que es bastante animado, tiene un paseo marítimo lleno de cafés y tiendecitas, un bonito faro, mucha vida nocturna y bastantes actividades para hacer: kayak, caminatas…

A lo largo del Paseo de los Turistas, una avenida peatonal que bordea la enorme playa de más de 3 kms., se puede dar un agradable paseo hasta el faro o incluso patinar, parando de vez en cuando a tomar algo en sus numerosos restaurantes, cafeterías y heladerías.

Probad la Marisquería Don Mario donde todos los pescados y mariscos son fresquísimos y tomaros un Churchill, la versión costarricense del granizado. Para el atardecer, el Rincón del Surf es un chiringuito en plena playa con reggae bastante animado.

Si pasáis noche en la zona y queréis alojaros en pleno Paseo de los Turistas, el hotel Las Brisas es una de las mejores opciones: con un Buffet desayuno muy completo, piscina y habitaciones con vistas al mar por 75€ la noche.

Y si preferís un Todo Incluido, el DoubleTree Resort by Hilton es un hotel impresionante frente al mar en la zona de El Roble con su propia salida privada a la playa, gimnasio y spa para darse un buen homenaje (unos 200€, all inclusive)

La Isla del Coco

Desde Puntarenas, en una larga travesía de unas 30 horas, se puede llegar a la impresionante Isla de Coco, cuyo Parque Nacional ha estado nominado como una de las Maravillas Naturales del Mundo y un lugar excepcional para el buceo en el que se puede nadar entre tiburones martillo y tiburones de aleta blanca, delfines o rayas. Tanto es así, que fue definida por Jeacques Cousteau como el lugar de buceo más bonito del Mundo. 

Además de esta experiencia irrepetible en la vida, la isla tiene muchos otros atractivos: cuevas submarinas, cataratas, bahías con playas arenosas, acantilados, miradores naturales… e incluso sus propias leyendas de piratas y buscadores de tesoros. Si tenéis tiempo y oportunidad, existen cruceros que duran entre una semana y 11 días que incluyen inmersiones diarias de buceo entre tiburones. Una pasada.

San José

Y terminamos con la capital… aunque en realidad fue el primer punto de Costa Rica que visitamos. He de reconocer que no íbamos del todo confiados sabiendo que pasaríamos el primer día de nuestro viaje en San José... habíamos leído cosas como que era una ciudad algo insegura y peligrosa, pero nada más lejos de la realidad. De camino desde el aeropuerto, ya nos tranquilizaron contándonos que se hace un gran esfuerzo por velar por la seguridad y tranquilidad de los ciudadanos, y además nos comentaron que la zona de nuestro hotel, que era totalmente céntrica, era ideal para salir a la calle y caminar. Es más, el lobby de nuestro hotel daba directamente al bulevar de la Avenida Central, un bulevar peatonal super concurrido y lleno de vida, tiendas y lugares para tomar algo… y estuvimos super a gusto caminando por él a nuestras anchas.

San José dicen que suele ser el centro estratégico y “ciudad dormitorio“ para la primera noche, especialmente para los vuelos que vienen de España que suelen llegar por la tarde y con el cansancio del vuelo no apetece demasiado ir del tirón a los principales lugares de interés como Tortuguero, Arenal, Monteverde o las playas y el downtown se encuentra a tan sólo 20 minutos del aeropuerto.

Sólo estuvimos un día allí, y a lo mejor echamos de menos estar algún día más. Es una ciudad bulliciosa, muy viva y repleta de mansiones victorianas, en mitad de un paraíso tropical. Nos sorprendió de manera muy positiva por sus bares y restaurantes, muy vintage y llenos de personalidad, así como su animada vida nocturna y posibilidades de ocio. A pesar de todo, un solo día puede ser suficiente para hacerse una idea de sus principales encantos: museos, mercados, parques y plazas… que se concentran en el pequeño centro de la ciudad. Eso sí, una de las cosas que os recomiendo es hacerlo a pie o como mucho en transporte público… las señales de circulación se respetan lo justo y el tráfico es horrible!

Qué ver en un día en San José

Si pasáis un día en la capital, uno de los edificios más bonitos es el del Teatro Nacional, el más importante de Costa Rica, inaugurado en 1897. Al lado de éste, el Teatro Melico Salazar es público y puede visitarse los Domingos que es el día en el que no tiene función.

Otra opción es visitar sus museos: el Museo de Arte Contemporaneo en el CENAC o el  Museo de Jade en el Instituto Nacional de Seguros.

Indispensable caminar a lo largo de la Avenida Central y parar en el Mercado Central, donde una multitud de puestos coloridos de todo tipo se entremezclan con bares, restaurantes, tiendecitas de helados y una de las mejores sorpresas, el bar más antiguo de San José llamado El Gran Vicio: con más de 130 años de historia, es un bar diminuto sin sillas ni mesas que sigue manteniendo la esencia de antaño.

Siguiendo por la Avenida Central, tenemos el edificio de Correos (un edificio histórico), y andando unos 15 minutos el Museo Nacional y el Cuartel Bellavista, con varios graffittis en su lado trasero. Justo bordeando el cuartel, veréis la Plaza de la Democracia    de estructura contemporánea.

La Casa Amarilla es un bonito edificio neocolonial sede del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores de Costa Rica y además está rodeada de algunos otros sitos de interés: el Parque Morazán con el Templo de la Música que replica el Templo del Amor y de la Música del Palacio de Versalles, o la Escuela Buenaventura Corrales – conocida como el Edificio Metálico-, inspirado en la Torre Eiffel.

Comer y salir en San José

Como os digo, lo que más nos gustó de San José fueron las amplias alternativas de ocio y restauración de la ciudad… nos encantó la manera en la que decoraban los bares y restaurantes, su ambiente, la comida, los cocktails… te entraban ganas de quedarte para siempre!! Aquí os dejo sólo una selección de los 10 que más nos gustaron:

• 1 y 2. El Mercado Central, ideal para probar la comida tradicional a buen precio. Probad la olla de carne, el gallo pinto y el helado de sorbetera. Otra opción si queréis platos más tradicionales es el Restaurante Nuestra Tierra, en la Plaza de la Democracia, con unos casados buenísimos.

• 3. Beer Factory, si os gusta la cerveza, este es un local de mesitas de madera y sillas de colores para degustar cervezas artesanales locales como la Escalante Beer.

• 4. La Cafeoteca, un lugar precioso donde disfrutar tomando el delicioso café de Costa Rica en cualquiera de sus variedades.

• 5. Café Rojo, junto al Jardín Botánico, es un sito precioso, boho, íntimo y acogedor para alargar las horas en pleno centro conversando alrededor de un té chia o cualquiera de sus pies, todo orgánico y elaborado por ellos.

• 6. La Pataconería, especializado en los populares patacones o plátanos machacados fritos.

• 7. El Portón Rojo, una “pizzería y galería“ informal, antiguo estudio del pintor costarricense Teodorico Quirós, ideal para pedirse unas pizzas acompañadas por sus abundantes ensaladas.

• 8. Neshuma, un restaurante vegetariano muy acogedor que también tiene opciones para los veganos en su carta.

• 9. Café Kracovia, en el Hotel Kracovia, con zumos y batidos de frutas deliciosos para acompañar de sus postres caseros como el pastel de zanahoria y chocolate.

• 10. Aquí es, un argentino con platos a la parrilla en el que destacan, cómo no, las carnes y las empanadas. Además el ambiente es acogedor y con un toque algo romántico.

Hoteles en San José

Nuestro hotel se llamaba Hotel Presidente y fue una buenísima elección: era ecléctico y con mucha personalidad, moderno pero lleno de objetos retro, y tenía en la azotea un bar espectacular con unas vistas impresionantes de la ciudad. El desayuno era tipo Buffet y estaba muy bueno, con la opción de desayuno más internacional y el típico gallo pinto costarricense. Además, el lobby tenía acceso directo a la Avenida Central, por lo que no podía estar mejor ubicado. El precio además me pareció bastante razonable: unos 80€ la habitación doble con desayuno.

En una espectacular mansión victoriana, el Hotel Grano de Oro es una maravilla en la que los desayunos los sirven en un patio encantador y el restaurante se lleva las mejores  valoraciones de la ciudad por su cocina fusión. Elegante, sofisticado, en pleno centro, y por unos 150€ la habitación doble. Hubiese sido mi siguiente opción seguro si el Presidente no hubiese estado disponible.

Hasta aquí ha dado de sí nuestro viaje a Costa Rica… y aun así siento que nos hemos dejado muchísimo por ver! Para todos los afortunados que lo tengáis en vuestra lista de destinos para el 2018, espero que estos 5 posts os hayan dado ideas para poder sacar el máximo partido de vuestro viaje! One is nearing the end of the trip … but the end is a goal, not a catastrophe – George Sand

This week we closed with some regret this trip, one of the most liked and shortest we have stayed … despite having filled nothing more and nothing less than 5 posts! We have left to finish the last two stops: Puntarenas and San José, although they are not less interesting for that reason.

Puntarenas 

Puntarenas was our next stage after Monteverde, a bit of beach and heat after the mountain and the cloud forest. It is the area with one of the most important fishing ports and from here the ferries leave for the Nicoya Peninsula with its white sand beaches ideal for surfing. Although for most it is usually a place of passage, the truth is that it is quite lively, has a seafront full of cafes and small shops, a nice lighthouse, lots of nightlife and many activities to do: kayaking, hiking …

Along the Paseo de los Turistas, a pedestrian avenue that borders the enormous beach of more than 3 kms., You can take a pleasant walk to the lighthouse or even skate, stopping every once in a while to have a drink in its many restaurants, coffee shops and ice cream parlors.

Try Marisquería Don Mario where all the fish and shellfish are very fresh and you take a Churchill, the Costa Rican version of the granizado. For sunset, the Rincón del Surf is a beach bar on the beach with pretty lively reggae.

If you spend the night in the area and want to stay in the Paseo de los Turistas, Las Brisas hotel is one of the best options: with a very complete buffet breakfast, pool and rooms with sea views for € 75 per night.

If you are an all inclusive fan, DoubleTree Resort by Hilton is an impressive hotel facing the sea in the area of El Roble with its own private exit to the beach, gym and spa to give a good tribute (about € 200, all inclusive)

Coco Island

From Puntarenas, in a long journey of about 30 hours, you can reach the impressive Coco Island, whose National Park has been nominated as one of the Natural Wonders of the World and an exceptional place for diving in which you can swim between hammerhead sharks and whitefin sharks, dolphins or rays. So much so, that it was defined by Jeacques Cousteau as the most beautiful dive spot in the World.

Besides this unrepeatable experience in life, the island has many other attractions: underwater caves, waterfalls, bays with sandy beaches, cliffs, natural viewpoints … and even their own legends of pirates and treasure hunters. If you have time and opportunity, there are cruises that last between a week and 11 days that include daily diving dives between sharks. Simply amazing.

San Jose

We end up with the capital … although it was actually the first point of Costa Rica we visited. I must admit that we were not completely confident knowing that we would spend the first day of our trip in San Jose … we had read things like it was a somewhat insecure and dangerous city, but nothing could be further from the truth. On the way from the airport, they reassured us by telling us that a great effort is made to ensure the safety and tranquility of the citizens, and they also told us that the area of ​​our hotel, which was totally central, was ideal for going out on the street and walk. What’s more, the lobby of our hotel faced the boulevard of Central Avenue, a pedestrian boulevard super busy and full of life, shops and places to have a drink … and we were super comfortable walking around it at our leisure.

San José say that it is usually the strategic center and the «bedroom city» for the first night, especially for the flights that come from Spain that usually arrive in the afternoon and with the fatigue of flight do not feel like going too far to the main places of interest such as Tortuguero, Arenal, Monteverde or the beaches and downtown is only 20 minutes from the airport.

We were only there one day, and maybe we miss being one more day. It is a bustling city, very alive and full of Victorian mansions, in the middle of a tropical paradise. We were surprised in a very positive way by its bars and restaurants, very vintage and full of personality, as well as its lively nightlife and leisure possibilities. In spite of everything, a single day can be enough to get an idea of ​​its main charms: museums, markets, parks and squares … which are concentrated in the small center of the city. Yes, one of the things that I recommend is to do it on foot or as much on public transport … the traffic signs are respected justly and the traffic is horrible!

San Jose in one day

If you spend a day in the capital, one of the most beautiful buildings is the National Theater, the most important in Costa Rica, opened in 1897. Next to it, the Melico Salazar Theater is public and can be visited on Sundays, which is the day in which it has no function.

Another option is to visit its museums: the Contemporary Art Museum at CENAC or the  Jade Museum at the National Insurance Institute.

Indispensable to walk along the Central Avenue and stop at the Central Market, where a multitude of colorful stalls of all kinds are interspersed with bars, restaurants, ice cream shops and one of the best surprises, the oldest bar in San Jose called El Gran Vicio: with more than 130 years of history, it is a tiny bar with no chairs or tables that still maintains the essence of yesteryear.

Following the Central Avenue, we have the Correos building (a historic building), and about 15 minutes walk to the National Museum and the Bellavista Barracks, with several graffiti on its back side. Just bordering the barracks, you will see the Plaza de la Democracia with a contemporary structure.

The Yellow House is a beautiful neocolonial building that is the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Costa Rica and is also surrounded by some other places of interest: the Morazán Park with the Temple of Music that replicates the Temple of Love and the Music of the Palace of Versailles, or the Buenaventura Corrales School – known as the Metallic Building-, inspired by the Eiffel Tower.

Eating and going out

As I say, what we liked most about San José were the wide alternatives of leisure and restoration in the city … we loved the way they decorated the bars and restaurants, their atmosphere, the food, the cocktails … we wanted to stay forever! Here I leave only a selection of the 10 that we liked the most:

• 1 y 2. Central Market, ideal to try traditional food at a good price. Try the meat pot, the gallo pinto and the sorbetera ice cream. Another option if you want more traditional dishes is Nuestra Tierra Restaurant, in the Plaza de la Democracia, with delicious casados.

• 3. Beer Factory, if you like beer, a place with wooden tables and colorful chairs to taste local craft beers such as Escalante Beer.

• 4. Cafeoteca, a beautiful place to enjoy taking the delicious Costa Rican coffee in any of its varieties.

• 5. Café Rojo, next to the Botanical Garden, it is a beautiful, bohemian, intimate and cozy place to extend the hours in the center talking about a tea or any of your feet, all organic and made by them.

• 6. La Pataconeria, specialized in fried plantains.

• 7. Porton Rojo, an informal «pizzeria and gallery», an old study by the Costa Rican painter Teodorico Quirós, ideal to order some pizzas accompanied by their abundant salads.

• 8. Neshuma, a cozy vegetarian restaurant that also has options for vegans in the menu.

• 9. Café Kracovia, at Hotel Kracovia, with juices and delicious fruit smoothies to accompany your homemade desserts such as carrot cake and chocolate.

• 10. Aquí es, an argentine with grilled dishes in which they highlight, of course, meats and empanadas. In addition the atmosphere is cozy and with a touch something romantic.

Hotels in San Jose

Our hotel was named Hotel Presidente and it was a perfect choice: eclectic and with a lot of personality, modern but full of retro objects, and had on the roof a spectacular bar with stunning views of the city. The breakfast was buffet type and it was awesome, with international breakfast option and the typical Costa Rican Gallo pinto. The lobby had direct access to Central Avenue, so it could not be better located. The price also seemed quite reasonable: about € 80 for a double room with breakfast.

In a spectacular Victorian mansion, the Grano de Oro Hotel  is a wonder in which breakfasts are served in a charming courtyard and the restaurant takes the best ratings of the city for its fusion cuisine. Elegant, sophisticated, in the center, and for about € 150 the double room. It would have been my next safe option if the President had not been available.

So far has given us our trip to Costa Rica… and even then I feel we have left a lot to see! For all the lucky ones that you have on your list of destinations for 2018, I hope that these 5 posts have given you ideas to make the most of your trip!
