Feliz 2018!!

Este año promete… no creéis? Mirándolo con perspectiva, tenemos 12 meses por delante para exprimirlos, cumplir alguno de nuestros deseos e intentar hacer de este año algo memorable… de nosotros depende! Yo vengo cargada de energías para hacer que así sea y espero cerrar este nuevo 2018 como terminó el viejo 2017, o al menos poner todo de mi parte para que así sea.

El viejo 2017 terminó en Costa Rica, en Puerto Viejo, Limón. Brindando en la playa descalza bajo los fuegos artificiales y bailando después en las calles repletas de gente celebrando la llegada de nuevas ilusiones. El nuevo 2018 lo empecé despeinada, libre y contagiada de esa pura vida tica, y recuerdo que en ese momento me sentí FELIZ y privilegiada… porque sabía que estaba en el lugar adecuado viviendo una experiencia irrepetible. De nuevo, esa magia de viajar.

Costa Rica son demasiadas sensaciones juntas y un solo post no da de sí para describirlas… creo que es, de todos los países que he visitado, uno de los más imprevisibles, diversos y cambiantes: su posición geográfica, sus dos costas (Caribe y Pacífico) y su sistema montañoso favorecen variados microclimas y desde las  laderas boscosas de los volcanes a los arrecifes de coral se despliegan infinitos tipos de paisajes, temperaturas, ecosistemas, tipologías diferentes de plantas, flores, aves, mamíferos, reptiles… cada día era una aventura y nunca sabías con qué te ibas a sorprender. 

Por ello, este viaje os lo tengo que contar por etapas… y aunque Puerto Viejo no fue nuestro primer destino, me gustaría empezar por él y sus alrededores por ser un lugar de esos que te dejan huella, y uno de los que más disfrutamos.

 

Puerto Viejo, Limón

Puerto Viejo es el lugar en el que los viajeros de espíritu más libre encuentran su sitio y uno a los que más se desea regresar. Conocido por su autenticidad, aquí todo es espontáneo, mágico y posible, y sus seis pequeñas poblaciones se concentran alrededor de la jungla bordeando playas caribeñas que, a pesar de sus aguas turquesas, nada tienen que ver con la típica estampa del Caribe que todos tenemos en la cabeza: más salvajes, con más carácter y semi escondidas entre la selva. Atrae a los surferos más intrépidos buscando cabalgar su salsa brava, a los más hippies con el sonido del reggae en sus calles flanqueadas por casitas de colores al más puro estilo jamaicano, a los que buscan mezclarse con sus gentes en los bares locales compartiendo una charla animada con unas cervezas, e incluso a apasionados del yoga que meditan frente al mar ante unas increíbles puestas de sol. Todo el mundo, sea quien sea y como sea, tiene su lugar en Puerto Viejo, y eso es lo que más me enganchó de él, porque de alguna manera yo también encontré mi sitio aquí… mi destino secreto sobre el que nada sabía antes en Costa Rica.

El centro de la ciudad se compone de varias calles apenas asfaltadas siempre bulliciosas que son un escenario vivo y real de la cultura y forma de vida costarricense con aires afro caribeños. Sus casas, entre deterioradas y características, destacan por los colores vivos de las fachadas. Con una gran cantidad de bares y sodas (lugares de comidas tradicionales muy económicos), es tranquilo de día y animado por la noche.

 

 

Nuestro lugar preferido en el centro era el Krazy Lobster, por sus vistas privilegiadas de la playa. Perfecto a cualquier hora del día, para tomar un batido, unas cervezas, para picar algo, para comer o para cenar comida local o internacional, es ideal para pasar horas sentado en sus mesas sobre la arena y siempre tenía buena música y buen ambiente.

Pero además de Krazy Lobster, Puerto Viejo está plagado de sitios con un gran encanto para tomar algo… aquí os dejo una selección de los que más nos gustaron:

 

De Gustibus Bakery

De Gustibus Bakery es un lugar ecléctico en el que se mezcla el aroma a pan y bollería recién hecha con el del café intenso costarricense y una decoración colonial acogedora que invita a pasar horas charlando. Aquí se puede tomar desde un café rápido (delicioso) hasta desayunos saludables, smoothies naturales recién preparados o  comidas y tentempiés. Nosotros intentábamos siempre coger sitio en la terraza, rodeados de una intensa vegetación… era como estar desayunando dentro de la selva! También tenían una pequeña tiendecita con cafés y chocolates… mmm!

 

Cafe Viejo

 

 

El Cafe Viejo fue una agradable sorpresa, un italiano regentado por italianos en pleno Puerto Viejo con una comida espectacular y un trato inigualable por parte de Maurizio en la sala, todo ambientado por música en directo y en un local colonial con un enorme encanto en una de las principales calles del centro. No se puede pedir más! 100% recomendable.

 

Koki Beach

 

 

 

Koki Beach  es un lounge eco-friendly frente a la playa que fusiona un ambiente más chic y elegante en el restaurante con una terraza más hippie y colorida en la que relajarse a la puesta del sol tomando un coctail o el popular guaro sour escuchando música chill out. El sitio es precioso y siempre está animado, aunque los precios sean algo más elevados que la media en Puerto Viejo.

Nema Bar & Restaurant

 

Nema Bar & Restaurant  estaba siempre abarrotado, y eso nos pareció un buen indicador. Lo elegimos como “centro de operaciones“ para despedir el año y no nos defraudó. Su ubicación privilegiada en el centro de todo, justo enfrente del mar y en el cruce de caminos principal del pueblo, así como la música, la comida y el ambiente son geniales para vivir el auténtico estilo de vida de Puerto Viejo.

 

 

Puerto Pirata

Puerto Pirata es otro de mis lugares preferidos para comer en Puerto Viejo por su oferta de comida sana y su ubicación perfecta justo en la playa. Su chef, inspirado por el Ayurveda, prepara platos crudos, orgánicos, o postres caseros deliciosos y el precio es bastante asequible para la calidad de la comida y estar en primera línea junto al mar.

 

Mopri

Una soda típica con una calidad increíble de pescados y mariscos: Mopri, con unos precios muy asequibles y todo delicioso, a pesar de ser muy humilde y austero. Además, tiene su propio mostrador de pescadería en el que venden pescado fresco recién traído del mar.

 

Stashu’s con Fusion

Stashu’s con Fusion destaca por servir las mejores bebidas y cocina de fusión en Puerto Viejo. Podréis encontrar platos típicos, hindúes, tropicales, caribeños, veganos… y todo en un lugar bonito y muy bien decorado que os permitirá cambiar el chip respecto a las tradicionales sodas y casas de comida de la zona.

 

 

Las Playas 

Otro gran atractivo de Puerto Viejo son sus playas, en la costa del Caribe, salvajes y naturales y con unos paisajes impresionantes. A lo largo de la costa al norte hasta Limón o al sur hasta Manzanillo hay diferentes opciones y alternativas para todos los gustos:

Playa de Puerto Viejo

Puerto Viejo está asomado al mar, por lo que se puede decir que sus playas se extienden kilómetros al Norte hasta Cahuita y al Sur hasta Manzanillo, pero justo en el centro podemos acceder perfectamente a una playa preciosa, abierta y con algunas calitas, que se llena de gente en cuanto aparecen los rayos del sol. La ventaja es que al estar en el centro están rodeadas de bares y restaurantes para alargar el día hasta el atardecer y me parecieron tan bonitas y naturales como cualquier otra al estar rodeadas de vegetación. Y si no os apetece tanto barullo, solo con desplazaros un poco tras la carretera principal hay orillas completamente desiertas en las que disfrutar en silencio de un buen libro o dormir tranquilamente la siesta.

Playa Negra

Saliendo de Puerto Viejo en dirección a Cahuita, esta playa con arena negra ofrece mayor tranquilidad y una alternativa al bullicio de la playa de la ciudad relativamente cercana, a unos 10 kms. Muy frecuentada por surfistas por la fuerza de sus olas, es una de las preferidas por los locales de la zona. Al final de la playa, se encuentra un antiguo casco de barco encallado en la orilla, un lugar ideal para contemplar la puesta de sol.

Playa Cocles

Una playa enorme y abierta de arenas doradas a un paseo de Puerto Viejo en la que las olas son uno de los principales reclamos y con un característico islote que aporta personalidad al paisaje. La playa se comunica con la de Puerto Viejo a través de un arrecife coralino bastante interesante para hacer snorkel.

Punta Uva

A unos 8kms. de Puerto Viejo, esta playa destaca por el arrecife que protege del oleaje y sus aguas calmadas. Al encontrarse dentro del Refugio de Vida Silvestre Gandoca – Manzanillo permite ver desde monos y perezosos hasta diferentes tipos de aves mientras te das un chapuzón. Además, se puede llegar a ella cómodamente cogiendo un autobús desde Puerto Viejo.

Playa Chiquita

Una playa muy tranquila formada por pequeñas bahías en las que es fácil encontrar un lugar para estar completamente solos y alejados de la muchedumbre. Para llegar a ellas se pueden tomar algunos de sus senderos que las hacen menos accesibles y privadas, como el sendero que parte desde el Hotel Shawandha. También se puede llegar a ella cogiendo el autobús local en Puerto Viejo.

Manzanillo

Manzanillo es el último pueblo al sur de Puerto Viejo y sus playas se consideran unas de las más pintorescas de Costa Rica. El pueblo, más calmado y tranquilo que Puerto Viejo, es ideal para disfrutar de sus restaurantes (con las mejores langostas de la zona) o para caminar escalando el Punta Mona para ver a las especies de monos de los alrededores. Sus playas cuentan con un arrecife de coral muy cercano a la costa para hacer snorkel y también se puede hacer el “tour delfín“ para ver los delfines de los alrededores de la costa.

 

 

Los alrededores 

Otra de las cosas que me gustan de Puerto Viejo es que también es un buen centro de operaciones para visitar sitios interesantes. Nosotros llegamos a Puerto Viejo desde Tortuguero tras varias horas de viaje, pero una vez allí nos movimos sin problemas tanto en autobús como en taxi. Lo más interesante puede que sea Cahuita, aunque si tenéis tiempo es muy recomendable coger el barco hasta Bocas del Toro, en Panamá, y pasar al menos un día.

 

Cahuita y Playa Blanca

El Parque Nacional de Cahuita es uno de los lugares de obligada visita si vamos a Puerto Viejo, no solo por sus increíbles playas de arena blanca sino por sus arrecifes de coral para hacer snorkel (se ven peces de todo tipo, rayas, barracudas…) y su bosque tropical húmedo, ideal para hacer una caminata por la mañana.

Limón

Dicen que si vas buscando la versión más fidedigna de la vida cotidiana de Costa Rica tienes que visitar Limón, una localidad situada a 55 kms. de Puerto Viejo con el puerto más importante del país. No es una de las zonas más turísticas pero tiene algunos atractivos como ser el lugar donde se cultiva el marañón (una variedad de fruto seco) para elaborar el conocido vino de marañón, el Parque Vargas con sus increíbles vistas del mar, sus mercados al aire libre o su animada vida nocturna.

Bocas del Toro (Panamá)

Al archipiélago de Bocas del Toro solo se puede llegar en barco o en avión, y cada día desde Puerto Viejo parten shuttles ( a las 6 a.m., 8 a.m. y 12h) que combinan una parte en furgoneta y el resto del trayecto en barca y que en unas 3h llegan a la isla principal, Isla Colón o Ciudad de Bocas. El precio ronda los 30﹩por persona (a los que hay que añadir el impuesto de salida de Costa Rica y la tasa turística de entrada a Panamá) y una vez allí tan solo hay que disfrutar de este verdadero paraíso de aguas cristalinas en los que ver estrellas de mar, delfines o simplemente pasar un día redondo en la playa.

 

Alojamiento en Puerto Viejo y alrededores

Aunque esta zona destaca por ser bastante accesible para todos los bolsillos y viajeros, también cuenta con verdaderas joyas, como estos 4 increíbles alojamientos que os presento, a cuál más apetecible (ordenados por precio, de mayor a menor):

 

Treehouse Lodge en Punta Uva

En un entorno paradisiaco en una de las playas más bonitas de Punta Uva, este hotel ofrece la posibilidad de poder dormir en cabañas de madera en los árboles rodeados de todos los lujos: sauna, jacuzzi y piscina. Para vivir una experiencia única en pleno bosque tropical sin renunciar a ningún tipo de comodidad. El precio del bungalow en el árbol es de unos 220€ por noche.

 

Relax Natural Village Adults Only en Playa Cocles

Por 120€ la suite con desayuno incluido, este hotel es ideal para una escapada de relax y desconexión en plena Playa Cocles y a poca distancia de Puerto Viejo. El hotel ofrece una amplia terraza con hamacas para ver el amanecer o la puesta de sol y sus bungalows de madera cuentan con comodísimas camas King size de 2×2 para un descanso total.

 

Sueño Grande B&B en Puerto Viejo

A 3 minutos andando de la playa y con una ubicación supercéntrica en Puerto Viejo, este B&B de diseño tiene una piscina espectacular y todo está cuidado al mínimo detalle por su dueña, Jody, que mima a los clientes y les hace sentir especiales en todo momento durante su estancia. El precio de la suite con balcón es de unos 90€, desayuno incluido.

 

Banana Azul en Playa Negra

Literalmente en la orilla de la playa y totalmente integrado en ella, este hotel con Beach lounge y un restaurante bastante interesante destaca por tener unos jardines tropicales impresionantes y mimetizarse plenamente con el entorno, además de por sus interiores elegantes y muy bien cuidados. Las habitaciones dobles empiezan en los 62€ y también tienen apartamentos a partir de los 100€ la noche.

 

Puerto Viejo Style

Es facil vestir en Puerto Viejo… bastan unas chanclas, un vestido y unas gafas de sol. Los colores, los estampados hippies y los tejidos ligeros son un acierto seguro para disfrutar del sol y de las playas o caminar por las calles del centro. Pero estamos en Costa Rica, por lo que no os olvidéis llevar un chubasquero que os cubra en caso de lluvia repentina, algo bastante habitual…

Happy 2018!!

This year promises … do not you think? Looking at it with perspective, we have 12 months ahead to squeeze them, fulfill some of our wishes and try to make this year something memorable … it depends on us! I come full of energies to make it so and I hope to close this new 2018 as the old 2017 ended, or at least put everything on my part to make it so.

The old 2017 ended in Costa Rica, in Puerto Viejo, Limón. Offering on the beach barefoot under the fireworks and then dancing in the streets full of people celebrating the arrival of new illusions. The new 2018 I began disheveled, free and infected with that pure ethical life, and I remember that at that time I felt HAPPY and privileged … because I knew I was in the right place living an unrepeatable experience. Again, that magic of traveling.

Costa Rica comprises too many sensations and a single post does not give of itself to describe them … I think it is, of all the countries that I have visited, one of the most unpredictable, diverse and changing: its geographical position, its two coasts (Caribbean and Pacific) and its mountainous system favors varied microclimates and from the wooded slopes of the volcanoes to the coral reefs unfold infinite types of landscapes, temperatures, ecosystems, different types of plants, flowers, birds, mammals, reptiles … each day was an adventure and you never knew what you were going to surprise.

Therefore, this trip I have to tell you in stages … and even though Puerto Viejo was not our first destination, I would like to start with it and its surroundings because it is one of those places that leave a mark, and one of the most we enjoy.

 

Puerto Viejo, Limón

Puerto Viejo is the place where freest-spirited travelers find their place and one to which they most want to return. Known for its authenticity, here everything is spontaneous, magical and possible, and its six small populations are concentrated around the jungle bordering Caribbean beaches that, despite its turquoise waters, have nothing to do with the typical Caribbean image that we all have in the head: more wild, with more character and semi hidden in the jungle. Attracts the most intrepid surfers looking to ride the salsa brava wave, the hippies with the sound of reggae in their streets flanked by colorful houses in the purest Jamaican style, to those who seek to mingle with their people in local bars sharing a chat animated with a few beers, and even yoga enthusiasts who meditate facing the sea before some incredible sunsets. Everyone, whoever and whatever, has its place in Puerto Viejo, and that’s what hooked me the most, because somehow I also found my place here … my secret destination about which I knew nothing before in Costa Rica

The center of the city consists of several streets that are always asphalted, always bustling, that are a live and real scene of the culture and way of life of Costa Rica with Afro-Caribbean airs. Their houses, between deteriorated and characteristic, stand out by the alive colors of the facades. With a lot of bars and sodas (places of traditional meals very cheap), it is quiet by day and lively at night.

 

 

Our favorite place was Krazy Lobster,for its privileged views of the beach. Perfect at any time of the day, to have a smoothie, a few beers, to snack, to eat or to have local or international food, it is ideal to spend hours sitting at their tables on the sand and always had good music and good atmosphere.

But in addition to Krazy Lobster, Puerto Viejo is full of places with great charm for a drink … here I leave a selection of the ones we liked the most:

 

De Gustibus Bakery

De Gustibus Bakery is an eclectic place in which the aroma of bread and freshly baked pastries is mixed with that of intense Costa Rican coffee and a cozy colonial decoration that invites you to spend hours chatting. Here you can take from a fast (delicious) coffee to healthy breakfasts, freshly prepared natural smoothies or even lunches and snacks. We always tried to take a place on the terrace, surrounded by an intense green vegetation … it was like having breakfast in the jungle! They also had a small shop with coffees and chocolates … mmm!

 

Cafe Viejo

 

 

Cafe Viejo was a pleasant surprise, an Italian run by Italians in the middle of Puerto Viejo with a spectacular meal and an unbeatable treatment by Maurizio in the room, all set by live music and in a colonial place with a huge charm in one of the main downtown streets. You can not ask for more! 100% recommendable.

 

Koki Beach

Koki Beach  is an eco-friendly lounge facing the beach that fuses a chic and elegant atmosphere in the restaurant with a hippie and colorful terrace in which to relax at sunset with a coctail or the popular guaro sour listening to chill out music. The place is beautiful and always lively, although the prices are somewhat higher than the average in Puerto Viejo.

Nema Bar & Restaurant

Nema Bar & Restaurant  was always crowded, and that seemed like a good indicator. We chose it as an «operations center» to bid farewell to the year and it did not disappoint us. Its privileged location in the center of everything, just in front of the sea and at the main crossroads of the town, as well as the music, the food and the atmosphere are great to live the authentic lifestyle of Puerto Viejo.

 

Puerto Pirata

Puerto Pirata is another of my favorite places to eat in Puerto Viejo for its healthy food offer and its perfect location right on the beach. Its chef, inspired by the Ayurveda, prepares raw, organic dishes, or delicious homemade desserts and the price is quite affordable for the quality of the food and to be in first line by the sea.

 

Mopri

A typical soda with an incredible quality of fish and seafood: Mopri, with very affordable prices and everything delicious, despite being very humble and austere. In addition, it has its own fishmonger counter where they sell fresh fish fresh from the sea.

 

Stashu’s con Fusion

Stashu’s con Fusion  stands out for serving the best drinks and fusion cuisine in Puerto Viejo. You can find typical dishes, Hindu, tropical, Caribbean, vegan … and all in a beautiful and beautifully decorated place that will allow you to change the chip with respect to the traditional sodas and food shops of the area.

 

 

The beaches 

Another great attraction of Puerto Viejo is its beaches, on the Caribbean coast, wild and natural and with stunning landscapes. Along the coast north to Limón or south to Manzanillo there are different options and alternatives for all tastes:

Puerto Viejo Beach

Puerto Viejo is overlooking the sea, so it can be said that its beaches extend north to Cahuita and South to Manzanillo, but right in the center we can perfectly access a beautiful beach, open and with some coves, which full of people as soon as the sun’s rays appear. The advantage is that being in the center are surrounded by bars and restaurants to extend the day until sunset and I found them as beautiful and natural as any other being surrounded by greenery. And if you do not want so much noise, just by moving a little behind the main road there are completely deserted shores where you can enjoy a good book in silence or sleep peacefully.

 

Playa Negra

Leaving Puerto Viejo in the direction of Cahuita, this beach with black sand offers greater tranquility and an alternative to the bustle of the beach of the relatively close city, about 10 kms. Very frequented by surfers due to the strength of its waves, it is one of the favorite ones for locals in the area. At the end of the beach, there is an old ship’s hulk stranded on the shore, an ideal place to watch the sunset

Cocles Beach

A huge, open beach of golden sands within walking distance of Puerto Viejo where the waves are one of the main attractions and with a characteristic islet that adds personality to the landscape. The beach communicates with that of Puerto Viejo through a very interesting coral reef for snorkeling

Punta Uva

About 8kms. of Puerto Viejo, this beach stands out for the reef that protects from the waves and its calm waters. When you are inside the Gandoca – Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge, you can see everything from monkeys and sloths to different types of birds while you take a dip. In addition, you can reach it comfortably by taking a bus from Puerto Viejo

 

Playa Chiquita

A very quiet beach formed by small bays where it is easy to find a place to be completely alone and away from the crowds. To get there, you can take some of the trails that make them less accessible and private, such as the path that starts from the Shawandha Hotel. You can also reach it by taking the local bus in Puerto Viejo.

Manzanillo

Manzanillo is the last town south of Puerto Viejo and its beaches are considered some of the most picturesque in Costa Rica. The village, calmer and quieter than Puerto Viejo, is ideal to enjoy its restaurants (with the best lobsters in the area) or to hike climbing the Punta Mona to see the species of monkeys in the vicinity. Its beaches have a coral reef very close to the coast for snorkeling and you can also do the «dolphin tour» to see the dolphins around the coast

 

 

The surroundings

Another thing that I like about Puerto Viejo is that it is also a good operations center to visit interesting places. We arrived in Puerto Viejo from Tortuguero after several hours of travel, but once there we moved smoothly by bus or taxi. The most interesting may be Cahuita, although if you have time it is highly recommended to take the boat to Bocas del Toro, in Panama, and spend at least one day

 

Cahuita and Playa Blanca

The National Park of Cahuita is one of the must-see places if we go to Puerto Viejo, not only for its incredible white sand beaches but also for its coral reefs for snorkeling (you can see all kinds of fish, rays, barracudas … .) and its humid tropical forest, ideal for a morning walk

Limón

They say that if you are looking for the most reliable version of daily life in Costa Rica you have to visit Limón, a town located 55 kms. of Puerto Viejo with the most important port in the country. It is not one of the most tourist areas but it has some attractions such as being the place where cashew (a variety of dried fruit) is grown to make the well-known cashew wine, Parque Vargas with its incredible views of the sea, its outdoor markets free or its lively nightlife.

Bocas del Toro (Panama)

The Bocas del Toro archipelago can only be reached by boat or plane, and every day from Puerto Viejo depart shuttles (at 6 am, 8 am and 12 am) that combine a part in a van and the rest of the journey by boat and that In 3 hours they arrive at the main island, Isla Colón or Ciudad de Bocas. The price is around $ 30 per person (to which you have to add the departure tax of Costa Rica and the tourist rate of entry to Panama) and once there you just have to enjoy this true paradise of crystal clear waters in which See starfish, dolphins or just spend a perfect day on the beach.

 

Accomodation in Puerto Viejo and surroundings

Although this area stands out for being quite accessible for all pockets and travelers, it also has real gems, like these 4 incredible accommodations that I present to you, to which more palatable (ordered by price, from highest to lowest):

 

Treehouse Lodge – Punta Uva

In a paradisiacal environment in one of the most beautiful beaches of Punta Uva, this hotel offers the possibility of sleeping in wooden cabins in the trees surrounded by all the luxuries: sauna, jacuzzi and swimming pool. To live a unique experience in the tropical forest without giving up any kind of comfort. The price of the bungalow on the tree is about €220 per night

 

Relax Natural Village Adults Only – Cocles Beach

For €120 the suite with breakfast included, this hotel is ideal for a relaxing getaway in the middle of Playa Cocles and a short distance from Puerto Viejo. The hotel offers a large terrace with hammocks to watch the sunrise or sunset and its wooden bungalows have very comfortable King size beds of 2×2 for a total rest.

 

Sueno Grande B&B – Puerto Viejo
