Buenos Lunes a todos!

Espero que hayáis disfrutado el finde y tengáis ya algún plan para Semana Santa, que está a la vuelta de la esquina! Estoy deseando que llegue el Viernes para irme a la montaña… este año nos apetecía escaparnos por la zona de Huesca y pasaremos unos días en Jaca, espero que quede algo de nieve para poderla disfrutar!

Antes de este pequeño parón, os traigo un post de mi ciudad… me he dado cuenta que, quitando los dos posts de restaurantes MAD Eat y MAD Eat II, apenas os he contado secretillos del lugar en el que vivo y es imperdonable porque está lleno de tesoros por descubrir!

Una de las cosas que más me gusta de la capital es la personalidad que desprenden cada uno de sus barrios, todos diferentes y especiales, con algo característico que les define a cada uno frente al resto. Entre todos, si sólo pudiese quedarme con uno que representara mejor lo que para mí es Madrid, estaría complicado elegir pero creo que me terminaría decantando por Malasaña. Es cierto que mucha de la magia del pasado de este barrio ha terminado desapareciendo, pero a pesar de ello se sigue reinventando y resurgiendo de sus cenizas cada día. ¿Por qué lo he escogido? Pues por su lado canalla, por su ambiente, por su mezcla de tendencia y vida de barrio tradicional, su arte, su cultura callejera y las infinitas posibilidades que presenta. Esta semana…

Un día de ruta por Malasaña

 

Antes de perdernos por sus calles, ojo! No estamos en un barrio cualquiera!

…Malasaña es el icono de la famosa movida madrileña de los años 70-80s y aunque hoy en día hay bares míticos que han desaparecido, aún se conservan grandes garitos con historia y no vamos a dejar de visitarlos en nuestra ruta.

… La Calle Manuela Malasaña debe su nombre a la mujer del mismo nombre asesinada por las tropas de Napoleón durante las jornadas de represión posterior al levantamiento del 2 de mayo del año 1808.

…En su Plaza del 2 de Mayo estaba el antiguo Parque de Artillería de Monteleón, donde se acuarteló contra el ejército napoleónico una pequeña fuerza militar con Luis Daoíz y Pedro Velarde como capitanes, a quienes se les recuerda con dos estatuas bajo el arco del antiguo cuartel conservado tras remodelar la plaza.

… El barrio se enriqueció por su mezcla de artistas y artesanos, la llegada de las pensiones a las calles, Doña Emilia Pardo llenando sus salones de la Calle San Bernardo con pensadores, científicos y periodistas, la Corredera de San Pablo abriendo sus mercados al aire libre.. marcando el espíritu alternativo y libre que se ha mantenido hasta el día de hoy.

9:30h. Empezando el día con el café de culto en Madrid…

Me declaro una auténtica fan del café. Del café de verdad, del que es difícil encontrar ya en los bares, del que deja huella en la memoria. Por eso quiero compartir con vosotros uno de mis grandes secretos, y os propongo iniciar nuestra ruta por la Calle de La Palma en la frontera entre Malasaña y Conde Duque para hacer una parada obligatoria en Toma Café… sus paredes de ladrillo visto, su decoración vintage y sus objetos recuperados del pasado os darán una cálida bienvenida y os invitarán a sentaros. Si sois afortunados podréis coger sitio en la mesita de la ventana (la más especial y codiciada) y disfrutar de uno de los cafés más buscados de la ciudad mientras observáis a los madrileños deambular. En nuestra ruta de hoy no vamos a pasar hambre, pero estar aquí y no pedir uno de sus deliciosos bizcochos caseros es casi imposible!

 

10:30h. Paseando entre un poco de historia

Para empezar a quemar la energía del desayuno, no es mala idea pasear entre las calles y plazas cargadas de historia y cubrir los principales puntos de referencia como la Plaza del 2 de Mayo, el mercado de Barceló (ahora el totalmente renovado Centro Polivalente Barceló, que en el pasado fue el mercado de abastos y que fue pionero al albergar el primer supermercado de España). Caminamos por una de sus calles más emblemáticas, la Calle del Pez, que toma su nombre de las charcas que había en la época de Felipe II. Otras calles míticas son la Calle de la Palma, San Vicente Ferrer, Corredera de San Pablo, Manuela Malasaña, la Calle del Barco, San Bernardo o Fuencarral, mi calle preferida de Madrid. No sé cuántas veces la he recorrido de arriba a abajo y siempre tiene algo nuevo con lo que sorprenderme. Y no olvidaros de recorrer toda la Calle Carranza hasta llegar a la Glorieta Ruiz Jiménez, para mí un lugar muy especial. Con todo este paseo habréis visto lo más representativo del barrio que, como veis, tiene mucho por exprimir…

 

12h. ¿Nos damos un capricho?

Es más que probable mientras vayáis caminando  que os llamen la atención sus encantadoras tiendas y pequeños negocios cuidados al detalle de aire vintage, muy alejados de las grandes cadenas de las vecinas Gran Vía y Preciados. Entre todas ellas, os he seleccionado algunas que personalmente me encantan…

• Libros: Cervantes y Compañía, en la Calle Pez 27, es una librería cuyo sótano se venden verdaderos tesoros: libros de ocasión y descatalogados, ejemplares raros de coleccionista… el paraíso para los que disfruten de la buena lectura

• Concept Store: El Moderno, en Corredera Baja de San Pablo 19, es la típica tienda en la que es inevitable pararse en el escaparate y entrar. Poco a poco se ha convertido en referente de diseño y en su interior combina un poco de todo: objetos de decoración, muebles, joyas, artesanía,  menaje, productos gourmet, papelería… productos que, según sus dueños, tienen un hilo conductor común: “tienen alma“…es difícil salir de allí sin nada.

• Alimentación: 2decologico, en la Calle Noviciado 9, es una tienda especializada en productos ecológicos a buen precio que trabaja directamente con productores locales y en la que venden cestas de fruta y verdura de temporada, huevos, pan, queso, mermeladas… hasta libros de recetas! Además ofrecen a los clientes la posibilidad de unirse a su grupo de consumo

• Decoración: Mandalay, una tienda que pasa completamente desapercibida en la Calle San Mateo 8, y que sin embargo tras su puerta esconde objetos chulísimos de muebles y decoración vintage, telas, tapices, objetos orientales…

• Moda: Williamsburg, en la Calle Velarde 4, es una tienda de moda vintage que se dio bastante a conocer por la visita de la actriz Sarah Jessica Parker… si, esta fue la tienda en la que compró el famoso black dress que llevó a la fiesta de HBO en Madrid. No tiene mal gusto la chica, en esta tienda hay prendas muy interesantes, bien seleccionadas y con mucho gusto para los amantes de este estilo.

• Bricolaje: Decorboom, en la Calle Fuencarral 55. Si, lo reconozco. Soy una freak del bricolaje y la decoración. Y no podía dejar de escribir este post sin hablaros de mi tienda preferida por antonomasia, la que más me gusta del mundo mundial… Decorboom! Papeles pintados, pinturas de todos los colores, maderas y todo tipo de materiales que sinceramente, no sé si a alguno os llamarán la atención pero que recomiendo enormemente para cuando tengáis que hacer alguna chapucilla en casa… jejeje

• Sneakers: Playground, en la Calle Clavel 4. Cuando vives con un adicto a las sneakers y te has recorrido mil tiendas buscando los modelos más raros y clásicos, aprendes a distinguir los sitios de cultos de los comerciales. En este caso, esta pequeña tiendecita casi pegada a la Gran Vía esconde auténticas joyas de coleccionista,merece la pena echarle un vistazo para ver qué tienen.

 

13:30h. Es la hora del aperitivo…

Entre tienda y tienda empieza a entrar un poco de sed… Malasaña tiene mil opciones para tomar un vermut, una cerveza, un vino o un aperitivo antes de irnos a comer. Como es casi imposible hablaros de todos, os selecciono los que para mí serían los grandes clásicos:

• Madrid Madriz, en la Calle Fuencarral 85. Ni sé cuántas veces he estado aquí ya… está tan bien ubicado junto a la salida del metro de Tribunal, tiran tan bien la cerveza y te ponen tan buenas tapas que es difícil resistirse a hacer una parada!

• Casa Camacho, en la Calle San Andrés, 4. Dicen que uno no es un auténtico Malasañero hasta que no se ha tomado uno de sus yayos, su vermut con casera y ginebra. Un lugar tradicional, de siempre, lleno de tasqueros, super auténtico y peculiar, en el que para ir al baño tendrás que pasar por debajo de la barra!

• Bodegas la Ardosa, en la Calle de Colón 13. Otro must, situado entre Malasaña y Chueca, donde tienen verdadero arte tirando cerveza y unas raciones para chuparse los dedos!

• Tipos Infames, en la Calle San Joaquín, 3. Este lo añado no por clásico, sino por diferente. Es un sitio para tomarse un vermut rodeado de libros, e incluso te dan la posibilidad de poder comprarlo por botellas (destacando el vermut catalán más en boga, el Morro Fí)

 

15h. Comer en Malasaña… hervidero de las tendencias gastronómicas

Lo reconozco, soy mas de cenar que de comer y creo que se me va a ver el plumero... pero no por ello desmerecen estos sitios que están fenomenal para el mediodía: frescos, desenfadados, apetecibles… apuntad!

• Maricastaña Bar & Kitchen, en Corredera Baja de San Pablo, 12. Muy cerquita de la Gran Vía, me parece muy acogedor y con una cocina bastante sabrosa a la par que moderna. Cuentan con un menú de mediodía por 11€ y me rechiflan sus tomates verdes fritos!

• Ochentagrados, en la Calle Manuela Malasaña 10, es un restaurante original en el que se sirven pequeñas tapas de cocina creativa -algunas de ellas realmente deliciosas- y el famoso distinto, un tinto de verano con un twist secreto al que me he vuelto prácticamente adicta.

• Le Cocó, en la Calle de Barbieri 15. Estrictamente hablando, creo que pertenecería más al barrio de  Chueca … pero aun así es un sitio que me apasiona y al que siempre que puedo me escapo. Me parece precioso, acogedor, fresco, me encanta su cocina mediterránea y siempre que voy me tratan fenomenal… os lo recomiendo!

• Green Club Café, en la Calle San Bernardo, 90. Tiene la peculiaridad de que, por 9€, puedes crear tu propio menú según tus gustos (escogiendo entre tres ingredientes o acudiendo a unos platos ya hechos o platos del día) , y está en una de mis zonas preferidas de Madrid, justo al lado de la Glorieta Ruiz Jiménez.

 

17h. Una sobremesa hipster

Una de las cosas que me gusta hacer en Malasaña es disfrutar de las horas de después de comer en alguno de sus cafés – gastroteca – terrazas o como quiera que lo llamen ahora los hipsters que los llenan hasta la bandera y tomar un gin tónic bien preparado, una cerveza artesana o algún cocktail refrescante… los que más me gustan son:

• La Tita Rivera, en la Calle Perez Galdós 4, que destaca por el encanto de su patio interior sombreado y colorido, en el que siempre hay buen ambiente.

• Fábrica Maravillas, en la Calle Valverde 29, es ideal para tomar una buena cerveza, ya que la fabrican ellos mismos de manera artesanal. En su carta siempre hay tres cervezas fijas: Malasaña Ale, Saison Ale e India Pale Ale, y otras diez que van variando por temporadas.

• Areia, en la Calle Hortaleza 92, es otro de los míticos de la zona. Un chill out de decoración exótica con camas balinesas y reservados donde tomar un cocktail en un ambiente relajado y hippie. 

• El Paracaidista, en la Calle de la Palma 10, en un impresionante edificio neoclásico y con tres plantas diferenciadas e incluso con su propia tienda. Lo mejor es su preciosa terracita ajardinada que todavía pocos conocen, por lo que aún se puede disfrutar de ella a gusto!

 

 

19h. Tarde de safari de arte

Para pasar la tarde, os propongo admirar el arte urbano de Malasaña: sus graffitis son tratados como verdaderas obras de arte e incluso se organizan safaris urbanos como los de Madrid Steet Art Project para descubrir todas las obras que decoran el barrio.

Pero también entre sus calles aparecen pequeñas galerías de arte de gran calidad, y gracias a PaseArte Malasaña podremos descubrir algunas de ellas mientras nos tomamos un buen vino o nos compramos un libro… se trata de una ruta por siete espacios diferentes muy emblemáticos del barrio: Espositivo, La Fiambrera, Kikekeller, Despacio Arte y Vino, Zoom Edition, Factoría de Arte y Desarrollo y FeedingArt, y lo mejor de todo… es gratuita!

 

21:30h. La hora de cenar

Y pasamos a lo que más disfruto siempre que doy una vuelta por Malasaña… sus restaurantes a la hora de cenar! Es mi barrio preferido para quedar con amigos o para ir con mi pareja a tomar algo, porque concentra muchos restaurantes que nos encantan!! Algunos de ellos son archiconocidos, otros que me cuesta más compartir porque los tenemos guardados como oro en paño…pero creo que como trippers los vais a agradecer, así que aquí van:

• Trattoria Pulcinella, en la Calle Regueros 7, es Italia en estado puro. Jamás he podido replicar exactamente sus rigattoni 4 fromaggi, porque están hechos con la auténtica receta de la mama. Un sitio íntimo, auténtico, acogedor, especial… una apuesta segura para cenar.

• La Fondue de Tell, en la Calle Divino Pastor 12. Perfecta para cenar en las frías noches de invierno, y con unas fondues de queso espectaculares en un local que parece una típica cabaña tirolesa.

• Yakitoro, en la Calle Reina 41. El restaurante Japo informal del Chef Chicote está inspirado en una taberna tradicional japonesa y sorprende con sus brochetas ocinadas en la parrilla en directo al estilo izakaya y una explosión de sabores, a precios para nada abusivos (se puede cenar bien por 25€ por persona). Eso sí, la fama hace que haya lista de espera y es imprescindible reservar.

• Home Burger Bar, en la Calle Espíritu Santo 12, es otro de mis musts. Hamburguesas de carne ecológica con una de las patatas fritas más increíbles que he probado nunca, en un local ambientado en los antiguos dinners americanos.

• La Mucca, en la Plaza de Carlos Cambronero 4, es otro de los imprescindibles de los que nunca te cansas. Además de comer bien en un buen ambiente, siempre me ha parecido original la posibilidad de poder comprar su mobiliario. Y después de cenar, tiene el extra de poder tomarse algo tranquilamente en su barra.

 

23:30h. Saliendo por el epicentro de la movida madrileña

Malasaña es una de las zonas preferidas para salir de fiesta, y para todo tipo de gustos: para los metaleros con sus minis de calimocho; los nostálgicos de la movida, los hipsters y modernos, e incluso los discotequeros con la irreductible Pachá. Aquí cuatro de los más icónicos:

• Vía Láctea , en la Calle Velarde, 18, es ideal para empezar la noche y tomar una copa, bailar, jugar al billar o charlar en uno de los lugares míticos de las noches madrileñas de los 80.  Lo mejor es que apenas ha cambiado nada desde entonces, sigue el ambiente de su música pop-rock y en él hay gente de todo tipo y edades, un imprescindible.

• El Pentagrama, o El Penta, en la Calle de la Palma 4, es el otro gran icono vivo de la movida popular por la canción de Nacha Pop “La chica de ayer“ y se le conoce como “el bar de la historia del pop“.

• Tupperware, o El Tupper, en la Calle Corredera Alta de San Pablo 26, es otra de las señas de identidad de la noche malasañera y el “templo del indie“. En él se dejan ver los más  alternativos durante el fin de semana.

• Siroco, en la Calle San Dimas 3, es una de las salas de conciertos más longevas de Malasaña y por ella pasan cada año más de 300 bandas de música y DJs.
• Madrid Me Mata, en la Calle Corredera Alta de San Pablo, 31. El primer bar-museo de la movida madrileña con dos plantas llenas de música, fotografía, arte y literatura de finales de los 70 y la década de los 80… hasta pantallas con videoclips de los artistas de la movida. Peculiar.

• Ya’sta Club, en la Calle Valverde 10, sigue en pie y dando guerra desde 1985 y es un importante bastión de la cultura underground y de la música electrónica. Hoy sigue siendo fiel a su estilo y también ofrece monólogos, poesía, bodypainting o exposiciones.

 

01:30h. Llegó la hora de ir a dormir… termina nuestro intenso día Malasañero

Lo hemos dado todo… es hora de descansar. Para dormir en el barrio y levantarse de nuevo en el centro de todo, cualquiera de estos tres hoteles es una alternativa ideal:

• 7 Islas, en la Calle Valverde 14. Precioso, moderno, especial… y cuida de todos los detalles. Si reservas por medio de su web, te obsequian con el uso de una bici gratis y acceso al servicio de minibar. Me encanta su decoración fresca e industrial… y a tan solo unos pasos estaréis en la Gran Vía. 120€ la noche.

• Abalú Boutique & Design Hotel, en la Calle Pez 19, un hotel con muchísima personalidad de estilo vanguardista en el que hasta puedes elegir la fragancia de tu habitación!! Todas las habitaciones cuentan con Home Cinema y un portátil Mac. Todo por 88€!

• Hostal Abel Victoriano, en la Calle San Bernardo 55, un B&B excepcional por 49€ la noche con habitaciones preciosas y un trato inmejorable.

Good Monday to everyone!

I hope you enjoyed the weekend and have already some plan for Easter, which is just around the corner! I’m looking forward to Friday to go to the mountain … this year we wanted to escape in the area of Huesca and spend a few days in Jaca, I hope there is some snow to enjoy it!

Before this little break, I bring you a post from my city … I have noticed that, removing the two posts of restaurants MAD Eat and MAD Eat II, I have scarcely told you secrets of the place where I live and it is unforgivable because it is full of treasures to discover!

One of the things I like most about the capital is the personality that comes from each of its neighborhoods, all different and special, with something characteristic that defines each one in front of the rest. Among all of them, if I could only stay with one that for me represents more authentically what I transmit Madrid, it would be difficult to choose but I think I would end up opting for Malasaña. It is true that much of the magic of the past of this neighborhood has ended disappearing, but despite this it continues to reinvent itself and resurface from its ashes every day. Why did I choose it? For its part rogue, its atmosphere, its mixture of trend and life of traditional neighborhood, its art, its street culture and the infinite possibilities that it presents. A day of travel through Malasaña

Before we go out and get lost in its streets, look! We’re not talking about any neighborhood!

… Malasaña is the icon of the famous Madrilenian movement of the 70s and 80s and although today there are mythical bars that have disappeared, there are still large gambling halls with history and we will not stop visiting them on our route.

… Manuela Malasaña Street is named after the woman of the same name killed by Napoleon’s troops during the repression days after the May 2 uprising of 1808.

… In its Plaza de 2 de Mayo was the old Artillery Park of Monteleón, where a small military force was raised against the Napoleonic army that was raised in arms, with Luis Daoíz and Pedro Velarde as captains, who are reminded of them with two statues under the arch of the old barracks preserved in the remodeling of the square.

… The neighborhood was completed and enriched by its mixture of artists and craftsmen, the arrival of pensions in the streets, Doña Emilia Pardo filling their halls on San Bernardo Street with thinkers, scientists and journalists, the Corredera de San Pablo opening Its outdoor markets … marking the alternative and free spirit of this area of the city that remains to this day.

9:30 a.m. Starting the day with the cult coffee in Madrid…

I do not know about you, but I declare myself a true coffee fan. The real coffee, which is difficult to find in bars, which leaves a mark on memory. That is why I want to share with you one of my great secrets, and I propose to start our route through La Palma Street on the border between Malasaña and Conde Duque to make a mandatory stop at Toma Café … its brick walls seen, its Vintage decor and objects recovered from the past will warmly welcome you and invite you to sit down. If you are fortunate, you can take a seat on the window table (the most special and coveted) and enjoy from it one of the most sought after cafes in the city as you watch the locals stroll. On our route today we will not go hungry, but being here and not taking advantage to take one of your delicious homemade cupcakes is almost impossible!

 

10:30 a.m. Walking between history

To begin to burn the energy of breakfast, it is not a bad idea to walk between the streets and squares loaded with history of the neighborhood and cover the main points of reference as the Plaza del 2 de Mayo, the market of Barceló (now the fully renovated Multipurpose Center Barceló, which in the past was the stock market and pioneered the first supermarket in Spain). We walk along one of its most emblematic streets, Calle del Pez, which takes its name from the ponds that were in the time of Felipe II. Other mythical streets to discover are Calle de la Palma, San Vicente Ferrer, Corredera de San Pablo, Manuela Malasaña, Calle del Barco, San Bernardo or Fuencarral, my favorite street in Madrid. I do not know how many times I have traveled from top to bottom and always have something new to surprise me with. And do not forget to travel all Carranza Street until arriving at Glorieta Ruiz Jiménez, for me a very special place. With all this walk you will have seen the most representative of the neighborhood that, as you see, has much to express …

 

Noon… Do we indulge ourselves?

It is more than likely while you are walking through the streets of Malasaña that you are struck by its charming and small vintage shops, far removed from the large mass production chains of  Gran Vía and Preciados. Among all of them, I have selected some that I personally love  …

• Books: Cervantes & Company, on Calle Pez 27, is a bookshop whose basement sells true treasures: used and out-of-print books, rare specimens of collectors … a paradise for those who enjoy good reading

• Concept Store: El Moderno, on Corredera Baja de San Pablo 19, is the typical store where you spend in which it is inevitable to stand in the window and enter. It is a shop that has gradually become a benchmark of design and in its interior combines a little of everything: objects of decoration, furniture, jewelry, handicrafts, household goods, gourmet products, … that, according to their owners, «have soul» … it is difficult to get out of there with nothing.

• Food: 2decologico, on Noviciado Street 9, is a shop specializing in ecological products at a good price that works directly with local producers and where they sell seasonal fruit baskets, eggs, bread, cheese, jams … even recipe books! And offer customers the ability to join their consumer group

• Deco: Mandalay, a store that passes completely unnoticed in Calle San Mateo 8, and yet behind its door hides very cool objects of furniture and vintage decor, fabrics, tapestries, oriental objects …

• Fashion: Williamsburg, on Velarde Street 4, is one of the most special vintage fashion shops and was quite known for the visit of the actress Sarah Jessica Parker … yes, yes, this was the store where she bought the famous black dress which led to the HBO party in Madrid. It does not have bad taste the girl, in this shop there are very interesting clothes, very well selected and with pleasure for lovers of this style.

• DIY: Decorboom, in Fuencarral Street 55. Yes, I recognize it. I am a DIY freak and decor. And I could not stop writing this post without telling you about my favorite store par excellence, the one I like the most in the world … Decorboom! Wallpapers, paint of all colors, woods and all kinds of materials that sincerely, I do not know if anyone will get your attention but I highly recommend for when you have to do some dick at home … jeje

• Sneakers: Playground, on Clavel Street 4. When you live with a sneakers addict and you’ve traveled a thousand shops looking for the rarest and classic models, you learn to distinguish cult sites from commercials. In this case, this small shop almost stuck to the Gran Vía hides authentic collector’s jewelry, so it’s worth checking out to see what they have.

13:30 p.m. It’s aperitivo time…

Between shop and shop you start to feel thirsty … Malasaña has a thousand options to have a vermouth, a beera or a wine before going to eat. As it is almost impossible to speak of all, I am going to select the great classics of the area:

• Madrid Madriz, in Calle Fuencarral 85. I do not know how many times I’ve been here already … it’s so well located next to the Tribunal metro exit, they draugh the beer so well and they get so good tapas that it’s hard to resist making a stop!

• Casa Camacho, in Calle San Andrés, 4. They say that one is not an authentic Malasanero until one has taken one of his yayos, a vermouth with gin that they prepare handmade. A traditional place, super authentic and peculiar, in which to go to the bathroom you will have to pass under the bar!

• Bodegas la Ardosa, in the Colon Street 13. Another must, located between Malasaña and Chueca, where they have real art throwing beer and a rations to suck the fingers!

• Tipos Infames, in San Joaquin Street, 3. This is not as classic, but it is quite different. It is a place to take a vermouth surrounded by books, and even buy some bottles (as the most popular Catalan vermouth, El Morro Fí)

 

15 p.m. Eating in Malasaña … boiling of the gastronomic tendencies

I recognize it, I prefer to have dinner than having lunch … but not for that they demerit those places that I comment you for noon: fresh, casual and appetizing:

• Maricastaña Bar & Kitchen, in Corredera Baja de San Pablo, 12. Very close to the Gran Vía, I find it a very cozy place and with a kitchen quite tasty and modern. They have a noon menu for € 11 and I fritter their fried green tomatoes!

• Ochentagrados, in Manuela Malasaña Street 10, is an original restaurant that serves small tapas of creative cuisine – some of them really delicious – and the famous distinto, a summer red wine to which I have become practically addicted.

• Le Cocó, in Barbieri Street 15. Strictly speaking, it would belong more to the Chueca neighborhood … but still it is a place that I am passionate and to that whenever I can I escape. I find it lovely, cozy, fresh, I love their Mediterranean cuisine and whenever I go they treat me terribly … I recommend it whenever I can!

• Green Club Cafe, in San Bernardo Street, 90. It has the peculiarity that, for € 9, you can create your own menu according to your tastes (choosing between three ingredients or going to some dishes and dishes or the day), and is in one of my preferred areas of Madrid, next to Glorieta Ruiz Jiménez.

 

17 p.m. A hipster afterlunch

One of the things I like to do in Malasaña is to enjoy the hours of after eating in one of its cafes – gastroteca – terraces (or whatever you call it now)  to have a gin tonic, a craft beer or some refreshing cocktail … the ones I like the most are:

• La Tita Rivera, in Perez Galdós Street 4, stands out for the charm of its shady and colorful interior courtyard, where there is always a good atmosphere.

• Fábrica Maravillas, in Valverde Street 29, is ideal for a good beer, since they manufacture it themselves in a traditional way. There are always three beers fixed: Malasaña Ale, Saison Ale and India Pale Ale, and ten others that are varying by seasons.

• Areia, in Hortaleza Street 92, is another of the mythical of the area. An exotic decoration chill out with Balinese beds and reserved where to have a cocktail in a relaxed and hippie atmosphere.

• El Paracaidista, in Calle de la Palma 10, in an impressive neoclassical building with three different floors and even with its own store. The best is its beautiful little terrace that still few know!

19 p.m. Afternoon of safari art

To spend the afternoon, I propose to admire the urban art of Malasaña: its graffitis are treated as real works of art and even organized urban safaris such as those organized in Madrid Steet Art Project to discover all the works that decorate the streets.

But also there are small art galleries of great quality, and thanks to PaseArte Malasaña we can discover some of them while we drink a good wine or we buy a book … it is a route through seven different spaces very emblematic of the Neighborhood: Espositivo, La Fiambrera, Kikekeller, Despacio Arte y Vino, Zoom Edition, Factoría de Arte y Desarrollo and FeedingArt, and best of all … it’s free!

 

21:30 p.m. Dinner time

And this is what I enjoy most whenever I take a trip through Malasaña … its restaurants at dinner time! It is my favorite neighborhood to stay with friends or to go with my partner to eat, because it concentrates many of the restaurants that we love most !! Some of them are well-known, others that cost me more to share because we have them stored as gold in cloth … but I think that as trippers you are going to enjoy them, so here they go:

• Trattoria Pulcinella, in Regueros Street 7, is Italy in its purest form. I have never been able to accurately replicate their rigattoni 4 fromaggi, because they are made with the real recipe of the mama. An intimate, authentic, cozy, special place … a safe bet for dinner.

• La Fondue de Tell, on Divino Pastor Street, 12. Perfect for dinner on the cold winter nights, and with spectacular cheese fondues in a local that looks like a typical tyrolean cabin.

• Yakitoro, at Reina Street, 41. Chef Chicote’s popular Japo informal restaurant is inspired by a traditional Japanese tavern and surprises with its skewers cooked on the live izakaya-style grill  at no-cost prices (you can dine for € 25 per person). Of course, the fame makes there is waiting list and it is imperative to book.

• Home Burger Bar, in Espíritu Santo Street 12, is another of my musts. Organic meat burgers with one of the most incredible chips I’ve ever tasted, in a diner set in old American dinners.

• La Mucca, in the Square of Carlos Cambronero 4, is another of the essential ones that never tire you. In addition to eating well in a good environment, I always found the possibility of buying your furniture very original. And after dinner, he has the extra of being able to take something quietly at his bar.

 

23:30 p.m. Going out in the epicenter of the Madrid movement

Malasaña is one of the favorite areas to go out partying, and for all kinds of tastes: for the metal fans with their minis de calimocho;, the nostalgics, the hipsters, and even the disco lovers with the irreducible Pacha Disco. Here four of the most iconic of all time:

• Vía Láctea, in Velarde Street 18, is ideal to begin the night and have a drink, dance, play billiards or chat in one of the mythical places of the nights of Madrid in the 80’s. The best thing is that hardly anything has changed since then, follows the atmosphere of his pop-rock music and there are people of all types and ages, an essential in the neighborhood.

• El Pentagrama, or The Penta, in La Palma Street 4, is the other great icon alive of the popular movement by the song of Nacha Pop «La chica de ayer» and is known like «the bar of the history of the pop»

• Tupperware, or The Tupper, in the Corredera Alta of San Pablo Street 26, is another of the hallmarks of the Malasaña night and the «indie temple». It shows the most alternative during the weekend.

• Siroco, in San Dimas Street 3, is one of the longest-running concert halls in Malasaña and more than 300 bands and DJs pass through it every year.

• Madrid Me Mata, in Alta Corredera de San Pablo Street, 31. The first bar-museum of the Madrid movement with two floors full of music, photography, art and literature of the late 70’s and 80’s … even TV screens with video clips of the artists of the movement. Peculiar.

• Ya’sta Club, on Valverde Street 10, has been standing up and waging war since 1985 and is an important bastion of underground culture and electronic music. Today it remains faithful to its style and also offers monologues, poetry, bodypainting or exhibitions.

01:30 a.m. Sleep time has come … our intense day in Malasaña ends now

We’ve given it all … it’s time to rest. To sleep in the neighborhood and get up again in the center of it all, these three hotels are the ideal alternative:

• 7 Islas, in Valverde Street 14. Beautiful, modern, special … and take care of all the details. If you book through their website, they will give you the use of a free bike and free access to the minibar service. I love the style in which it is decorated, fresh and industrial … and just a few steps you will be in the Gran Via. € 120 per night.

• Abalu Boutique & Design Hotel, in Calle Pez 19, a hotel with a lot of personality and charm of avant-garde style in which you can even choose the fragrance of your room!! All rooms have Home Cinema and a Mac laptop. All for 88 €!

• Hostal Abel Victoriano, in San Bernardo Street 55, an exceptional B & B for € 49 a night with beautiful rooms and an unbeatable deal.
