Buenos días! Damos por inaugurado Febrero y ya va siendo hora de que empiece a contaros el viaje más icreíble de mi vida… Indonesia! No sé por qué, pero desde que abrí el blog le he tenido un cierto miedo escénico a escribir estos posts, y de hecho pensaba regresar este verano porque siento que aún me queda mucho por descubrir… pero creo que habrá cambio de planes y finalmente busquemos otro destino para pasar las vacaciones, así que ya no hay excusa… no voy a dilatarlo más!

Me ha animado mucho la idea de empezar por el final… suena un poco contradictorio, pero inaugurar con las Islas Gili (una de nuestras últimas paradas en nuestro viaje) me ha parecido una manera ideal de enseñaros que este destino es muchísimo más de lo que parece… así que esta semana…

Las tres pequeñas islas Gili…o los tres pequeños secretos escondidos de Indonesia!

 

Las Gili son tres islitas de formas redondeadas que en realidad se encuentran más próximas a la isla de Lombok (que es desde donde las abordamos nosotros). Desde Bali, se puede acceder a ellas por medio de ferries o fast-boats desde los puertos de Benoa o Padang Bai. Algunas compañías como Gili Cat incluyen en sus precios el servicio de traslado desde los hoteles de las principales ciudades (Ubud, Kuta, Seminyak…) hasta estos puertos, por lo que es la mar de cómodo. El trayecto depende del tipo de embarcación que cojáis (los fast-boats tardan unas 2-2:30h según el puerto del que partáis y los recomiendo enormemente, pero es verdad que los precios del transporte «público» son muchísimo más baratos… otra cosa es cuánto queráis poner a prueba vuestra paciencia!!!)

Una vez lleguéis, las Gili os van a sorprender por ser muy diferentes a todo lo que hayáis visto en Bali: con sus aguas totalmente cristalinas, su estilo de vida, escasísimos templos -por no decir casi ninguno-.. en incluso sus propias normas, mucho más liberales y desinhibidas frente a la intensa espiritualidad y misticismo de la conocida popularmente como Isla de los Dioses. Ahora que tengo la experiencia de este fin de año, me parece que tienen bastante similitudes con lo que Goa simboliza en el conjunto de la India, al final este tipo de sitios de contraste me encantan!

Las islas se llaman Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno y Gili Air, y cada una tiene su propia personalidad y estilo, además de diferente tamaño. Lo que más me apasiona de ellas es que creo firmemente que los diferentes perfiles de viajeros que las han ido escogiendo a lo largo del tiempo les han dado a cada una su carácter y esencia únicos… y me ha parecido muy bonito intentar transmitiros la atmósfera característica de cada una desde las principales motivaciones de sus visitantes:

 

Gili Trawangan

… O simplemente «Gili T», e incluso jocosamente «Gili Tralalá» (supongo que la pobre gente local le puso este nombre por lo mal que debemos pronunciarlo los extranjeros) es la más grande y la animada de las tres (aunque lo de grande sería un eufemismo… son tres kilómetros de largo por dos de ancho!)

Es verdad que su fama es ser la más bulliciosa, animada, fiestera… pero también tiene unas puestas de sol increíbles y sus pequeños rincones escondidos para la desconexión.

 

¿Para qué y para quién?

Para los que busquen un paraíso más «civilizado» (de nuevo, permitidme el eufemismo…) y sobre todo pasárselo bien. Conocidísima por su marcha nocturna, en la que destaca el distressed Rudy’s Bar,  es uno de los mejores ejemplos de contraste nocturno con Bali y sobre todo un lugar de good vibes. Mucho turista convertido en habitante semi-fijo, mucho hippie y grupos de amigos con ganas de divertirse, entre los que se intercalan los que de verdad son de la isla: personas muy sociables y abiertas con las que nunca os faltará conversación.

 

Sus «musts»

Si queréis meteros en el rollo y mimetizaros con el ambiente nada más llegar, tenéis que coger un cidomo:son los característicos coches-taxi de caballos de Gili T que os llevarán por nada de dinero a cualquier parte de la isla (es más bien por vivir la experiencia, porque ya os digo que caminando o en bici llegaréis facilmente a cualquier parte)

 

 

 

Seguro que a más de alguno de vosotros le suena la famosa imagen del columpio enmedio del mar con una preciosa puesta de sol de fondo… pues este es uno de los enclaves «must» de la isla, frente al hotel Ombak Sunset, en el que hay que hacerse una foto de manera obligada. Dado el éxito del famoso columpio, en la isla han «montado» otro cercano con una hamaca al lado para tener el momentazo total, eso sí… hay que coger sitio rápido porque a atracción por estos columpios es tal que inevitablemente hay que esperar turno para poder hacerse la foto de rigor!

 

 

 

 

Para terminar, es absolutamente in-dis-pen-sa-ble visitar su Night Market para cenar (de hecho, os diría que no cojáis más que desayuno en el hotel, merece y mucho la pena!). Nosotros íbamos cada noche a darnos un festín con los productos más frescos recién hechos a precios de risa. Pescados recién capturados a la brasa, deliciosos arroces, sepias… se os va a hacer la boca agua!

 

 

 

Y un alojamiento…

Sin duda, Le Pirate Beach Club o lo que es lo mismo: Gili en estado puro. Son cabañitas pintadas de blanco y turquesa al lado del mar y concentra todo el espíritu hippie de la isla y concentra a los travellers más auténticos y aventureros. Se definen a sí mismos como «ECOnomical Resort»y combina las mejores vistas y ubicación con pleno contacto con la naturaleza y sostenibilidad. Y si todo esto fuera poco, es un palco privilegiado para disfrutar de la puesta de sol en la isla: no busquéis otro lugar para alojaros en Gili T! ¿El precio? Unos 60€ la noche.

 

Gili Air

Entre el jaleo de Gili T y la calma de Gili Meno, Gili Air simboliza el equilibrio perfecto para nuestra escapada. La llaman «la isla de los mochileros» y éso resume bastante bien lo que nos vamos a encontrar en ella: precios algo más económicos que en la vecina Gili T, ambiente y distensión sin tanto jaleo, y alojamientos más «eco» y accesibles. Puede que sea la elección más acertada para encontrar una oferta suficiente de restaurantes, ocio y relax.

¿Para qué y para quién?

Para los viajeros más casual que no quieren renunciar al paraíso pero que buscan algo más asequible y manejable, para los que hayan llegado a las Gili con ganas de sacar el máximo partido al mar (es uno de los lugares más escogidos para sacarse el PADI, hacer paddle surf o bucear), o simplemente par aquellos que viajan sin agenda y sin rumbo fijo (porque esta isla te va atrapando y al final te quedas más tiempo del que en un primer momento tenías previsto). También últimamente se está convirtiendo en un destino muy magnético para los yogis, que hacen de Gili Air su lugar de meditación y práctica

Curso de Buceo. Para los que podáis quedaros unos cuatro días, en Gili Air se puede hacer el curso de buceo Open Water, en el que os darán el certificado tras hacer al menos las cuatro inmersiones obligatorias y pasar el test para el que os darán el manual. El curso de iniciación cuesta unos 130€ y a veces incluso se llegan a ver tiburones! Si queréis más información en esta web os cuentan todo.

 

 

 

Snorkel con tortugas marinas. Entre las islas de Lombok y Bali se encuentra la Línea Wallace, el lugar en el que se unen los océanos Índico y Pacífico, y aquí se concentran una gran cantidad de tortugas que se desplazan desde México y Sudamérica. En Gili Air podréis bañaros con ellas y disfrutarlas a tan sólo 50 metros de la orilla.

 

 

 

 

Yoga y Pilates. Y para los que quieran equilibrar las actividades acuáticas con algo más espiritual, en la isla se encuentra el H20 Yoga and Meditation Center, en el que tras las clases de yoga se pasa a hacer la meditación en plena playa. Cuentan con varias clases (por la mañana, yoga acuático, clase nocturna…) así que si os gusta esta disciplina no es un mal plan para completar la experiencia en la isla.

 

 

 

 

…Y un alojamiento

El Sunrise Gili Air es un complejo precioso rodeado de jardines tropicales y tanto las habitaciones como las zonas comunes están cuidadas al detalle. Lo encontraréis a unos 15 minutos andando desde el puerto y una vez dentro se respira estilo, tranquilidad y muchísimo confort. Lo mejor: el delicioso desayuno buffet servido en una especie de palapa de madera muy bonita con unas vistas privilegiadas del mar… todo por unos 42€ la noche.

 

 

Gili Meno

La más pequeña de las Gili es la menos desarrollada y las más tranquila de las tres. El island hooper llega en tan solo 15 minutos desde Gili Trawangan y en 20 desde Gili Air, y entre sus tan solo 2 kms. de largo por 1 km. de ancho no esperéis encontrar demasiadas cosas, es por ello que a lo mejor a mí se me quedaría algo corta para quedarme más allá de una pequeña excursión, pero lo cierto es que espectacular verla con su lago central y su escaso nivel de civilización.

 

¿Para qué y para quién?

Para los más escapistas o los más estresados, ya que Meno es un lugar ideal para desconectar de todo y encontrar la PAZ con mayúsculas al más puro «estilo Robinson Crusoe». Pero también se dice de ella que es la más romántica e íntima, así que puede ser el destino ideal para los novios o recién casados o incluso para familias que busquen sosiego y tranquilidad.

 

Sus «musts»…

Si elegís Gili Meno como destino para más de un día, supongo que será para leer un buen libro y descansar… algunas de las pocas actividades que ofrece la isla además de bañaros en la playa o hacer snorkel es visitar el Bird Park,  un lugar en el que distraerse para ver especies de pájaros exóticos en mitad de la isla como pelícanos, faisanes, guacamayos, águilas o loros.

 

 

 

El Santuario de las Tortugas es otro de los grandes atractivos de Meno, un conjunto de pequeñas piscinas junto al mar en las que se crían las tortugas hasta que alcanzan los ocho meses, para después dejarlas en libertad en el agua.

 

 

 

Y un alojamiento…

Para hacer honor al estilo y personalidad de Meno, los alojamientos más populares son los huts o pequeñas cabañas rústicas sobre la arena de la playa… ¿no os parece uno de los mayores lujos del mundo? El Karma Reef Resort está compuesto por una serie de bungalows de dos pisos casi dentro del mar y el complejo en general tiene un aire rústico muy auténtico, guiado bajo el concepto de sostenibilidad. Un lugar tan encantador como la más pequeña de las tres islas: tranquilo, romántico e íntimo. Unos 150€ la noche.

 

 

Para no perder las buenas costumbres, terminamos esta ruta por las tres islitas más encantadoras con algunas sugerencias de atuendo para la maleta… Ah! Y aunque no aparezcan en ninguna de las fotos, es fundamental que os hagáis con unos buenos escarpines: las playas de las islas son paradisiacas pero su gran inconveniente es que están llenas de corales ya desde la orilla.

 

 

 

 

Para ser el primer post de Indonesia creo que ha sido un buen aperitivo, no? Good morning to all! We opened in February and it’s time to start telling you the most iconic trip of my life … Indonesia! I do not know why, but since I opened the blog I have had a certain scenic fear to write these posts, and in fact I thought I would return this summer because I feel that I still have a lot to discover … but I think there will be change of plans and finally look for another destination to spend the holidays, so there is no excuse … I will not delay it any longer!

I was very encouraged by the idea of starting at the end … sounds a little contradictory, but opening with the Gili Islands (one of our last stops on our trip) has seemed an ideal way to show you that thas place is much more than thay seems … so this week …

 

The three small islands Gili … or the three small hidden secrets of Indonesia!

The Gili are three little islands of rounded forms that are actually closer to the island of Lombok (which is where we approach them). From Bali, they can be reached by ferries or fast-boats from the ports of Benoa or Padang Bai. Some companies like Gili Cat include in their prices the transfer service from the hotels of the main cities (Ubud, Kuta, Seminyak …) to these ports, making the sea comfortable. The journey depends on the type of boat you catch (the fast-boats take about 2-2: 30h depending on the port from which you depart and I highly recommend them, but it is true that the prices of «public» transport are a lot cheaper … Another thing is how much you want to test your patience !!!)

Once you arrive, the Gili are going to surprise you for being very different from everything you have seen in Bali: with its crystal clear waters, lifestyle, very few temples – to say almost none – in even its own rules , much more liberal and uninhibited in the face of the intense spirituality and mysticism of what is popularly known as the Isle of the Gods. Now that I have the experience of this year’s end, I seem to have quite similarities with what Goa symbolizes in the whole of India, in the end these types of contrast sites I love!

The islands are called Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, and each has its own personality and style, plus different size. What I am most passionate about is that I firmly believe that the different profiles of travelers who have chosen them over time have given each one its unique character and essence … and I have found it very nice to try to transmit the characteristic atmosphere of each one from the main motivations of its visitors:

 

Gili Trawangan

… Or simply «Gili T», and even jocularly «Gili Tralalá» (I suppose the poor local people gave him this name because of the bad that we must pronounce it foreigners) is the biggest and lively of the three of great would be a euphemism … are three kilometers long by two wide!)

It is true that her fame is to be the most bustling, lively, partying … but also has incredible sunsets and their little hidden corners for disconnection.

For what and for whom?

For those looking for a more «civilized» paradise (again, allow me the euphemism …) and especially have fun. Known for its nightly performance, in which the distressed Rudy’s Bar stands out, it is one of the best examples of nocturnal contrast with Bali and above all a place of good vibes. Many tourists become semi-fixed, hippie and groups of friends with a desire to have fun, including those who are really on the island: very sociable and open people with whom you will never miss conversation.

If you want to get into the roll and mimetizaros with the atmosphere just arriving, you have to take a cidomo: they are the characteristic horse-taxi cars of Gili T that will take you for no money to any part of the island (it is rather Live the experience, because I tell you that walking or cycling will easily reach anywhere)

 

 

 

Surely more than one of you sounds the famous image of the swing in the middle of the sea with a beautiful sunset background … this is one of the island’s «must» enclaves in front of the hotel Ombak Sunset, In which you have to take a photo obligatorily. Given the success of the famous swing, on the island have «mounted» another nearby with a hammock next to have the total momentazo, yes … you have to catch fast site because the attraction for these swings is such that inevitably have to wait your turn to be able to take the mandatory photo!

 

 

 

 

To conclude, it is absolutely in-dis-pen-sa-ble to visit their Night Market for dinner (in fact, I would say do not take more than breakfast at the hotel, it deserves and very worth it!). We went every night to feast on the freshest produce freshly made at laugh prices. Fish freshly caught on the grill, delicious rice, cuttlefish … you will make your mouth water!

 

 

 

And accomodation…

Definetely, Le Pirate Beach Club Or what is the same: Gili in its pure state. They are painted white and turquoise by the sea and concentrate all the hippie spirit of the island and concentrate the most authentic and adventurous travelers. They define themselves as «ECOnomical Resort» and combine the best views and location with full contact with nature and sustainability. And if all this was not enough, it is a privileged place to enjoy the sunset on the island: do not look for another place to stay in Gili T! The price? About 60 € per night.

 

Gili Air

Between the noisy Gili T and the calm of Gili Meno, Gili Air symbolizes the perfect balance for our getaway. They call it «the island of the backpackers» and that sums up quite well what we are going to find in it: slightly cheaper prices than in the neighboring Gili T, atmosphere and relaxation without so much fuss, and more «eco» and accessible accommodations. It may be the right choice to find a sufficient supply of restaurants, leisure and relaxation.

For what and for whom?

For more casual travelers who do not want to give up paradise but who are looking for something more affordable and manageable, for those who have arrived in Gili wanting to get the most out of the sea (it is one of the most chosen places to get the PADI, do paddle surf or dive), or simply for those who travel without a schedule and without a fixed course (because this island is catching you and in the end you stay longer than at first you had planned). Also lately it is becoming a very magnetic destination for yogis, who make Gili Air their place of meditation and practice

Diving course. For those who can stay for about four days, in Gili Air you can do the Open Water diving course, in which you will be given the certificate after doing at least the four compulsory dives and pass the test for which you will be given the manual. The initiation course costs about € 130 and sometimes you even get to see sharks! If you want more information on this website they tell you everything.

 

 

 

Snorkel with sea turtles. Between the islands of Lombok and Bali is the Wallace Line, the place where the Indian and Pacific oceans meet, and here a large number of turtles that move from Mexico and South America are concentrated. In Gili Air you can bathe with them and enjoy them only 50 meters from the shore.

 

 

 

 

Yoga and Pilates. And for those who want to balance aquatic activities with something more spiritual, on the island is the H20 Yoga and Meditation Center, in which after the yoga classes you go to do the meditation in the middle of the beach. They have several classes (morning, water yoga, night class …) so if you like this discipline is not a bad plan to complete the experience on the island.

 

 

 

 

And accomodation…

Sunrise Gili Air is a beautiful resort surrounded by tropical gardens and both the rooms and the common areas are cared for in detail. You will find it about 15 minutes walk from the port and once inside you breathe style, tranquility and a lot of comfort. The best: the delicious buffet breakfast served in a kind of very nice wooden palapa with a privileged view of the sea … all for about 42 € a night.

 

 

Gili Meno

The smallest of the Gili is the least developed and the quietest of the three. The island hooper arrives in just 15 minutes from Gili Trawangan and in 20 from Gili Air, and between its only 2 kms. Long by 1 km. Wide you do not expect to find too many things, that is why maybe I would rather be short to stay beyond a small excursion, but what is certain is spectacular to see it with its central lake and its low level of civilization.

For what and for whom?

For the most escapist or more stressed, since Meno is an ideal place to disconnect from everything and find the PEACE with capital letters to the purest «Robinson Crusoe style». But it is also said that it is the most romantic and intimate, so it can be the ideal destination for newlyweds or even for families seeking peace and quiet.

 

 «Musts» …

If you choose Gili Meno as a destination for more than one day, I suppose it will be to read a good book and rest … some of the few activities offered by the island besides bathing on the beach or snorkeling is to visit the Bird Park, a place in which to distract to see species of exotic birds in the middle of the island like pelicans, pheasants, macaws, eagles or parrots.

 

 

 

The  Turtle Sanctuary is another of the great attractions of Meno, a set of small pools by the sea in which turtles are raised until they reach eight months, and then set them free in the water.

And accomodation…

To honor the style and personality of Meno, the most popular accommodations are huts or small rustic huts on the sand of the beach … do not you think one of the biggest luxuries in the world? The Karma Reef Resort is composed of a series of two-storey bungalows almost inside the sea and the complex in general has a very authentic rustic air, guided under the concept of sustainability. A place as charming as the smallest of the three islands: tranquil, romantic and intimate. About 150 € per night.

 

In order not to lose the good customs, we finish this route by the three most enchanting islitas with some suggestions of attire for the suitcase … Ah! And although they do not appear in any of the photos, it is fundamental that you do with some good beach shoes: the beaches of the islands are paradisiacas but its great drawback is that they are full of corals already from the shore.

 

 

 

 

To be the first post from Indonesia I think it has been a good appetizer, right? I hope that you have fallen in love with these incredible islands and that you include them in your travel plan if you decide to go to Bali, they deserve – and much – worth it!
