Feliz 2016!!!

Es tiempo de comenzar: empezamos el año, un nuevo post y también  look&feel … el blog empieza a tomar consistencia y es momento de evolucionarlo, este año habrá nuevas secciones más allá de Travel (nuestros habituales posts en detalle de cada destino) como Eat, Sleep, Live o Love (cada una de ellas un zoom mucho más detallado sobre restaurantes, hoteles y alojamientos, lifestyle o «flechazos»), todos ellos elaborados con el mismo cariño y con la misma mirada tripper que nos caracteriza… deseo que os guste y que podáis sacarles el máximo partido!!! (si no es así, ya sabéis que solo tenéis que hacérnoslo saber, este blog está hecho por y para vosotros y estaremos encantados de rectificar y volver al formato habitual)

Pero lo prometido es deuda! Recién aterrizada y con algo de jet lag, pero todavía sintiendo el calor de su temperatura, inauguró el año con un post especial sobre MIAMI!

El viaje ha sido una pasada, aunque un tanto accidentado… American Airlines no nos lo ha puesto demasiado fácil después cancelarnos el vuelo de ida y dificultarnos bastante el de vuelta. Pero ni AA ni ningún inconveniente extra que hemos ido encontrando por el camino ha impedido que disfrutemos de este increíble destino durante estos días, aquí os traigo todos mis descubrimientos!!!

Miami Beach es una de las ciudades de las más de 20 que componen el condado de Miami Dade, en Florida. Con sus características casetas pintadas de alegres colores y sus impresionantes playas de arena blanca, es la imagen que todo el mundo tiene en la cabeza cuando piensa en Miami: sol, playa, relax y ocio. Está unida a la zona continental de Miami por medio de cinco carreteras elevadas y la vista desde las alturas no tiene desperdicio:

Recién aterrizados en el aeropuerto, podéis coger el Bus 150 con conexión directa con Miami Beach/ South Beach por 2,5$ el trayecto, aunque hemos descubierto una alternativa muuuy cómoda que es Uber, a la que hemos sacado un gran partido en este viaje. Con Uber, si conseguís compartir el trayecto, llegar a South Beach tiene un coste aproximado de 12$, y en unos 20 minutos puedes estar en la puerta del alojamiento. Pero no todos los conductores se aventuran a recoger pasajeros en el aeropuerto, según nos contó uno de ellos la policía les acecha con multas elevadas que pueden llegar a ser de hasta 4.000$!!

¿Tenéis pensado alquilar un coche? Sólo os lo recomiendo si además de Miami queréis ver los alrededores: Orlando, los Cayos, la zona de los Everglades... ya que en Miami Beach es imposible aparcar. Está plagado de «valet parkings» con precios que oscilan entre los 20$ y los 50$ al día (aunque es cierto que yo he estado en Navidades donde todo se dispara). Además hay que pensar en la gasolina, que también es carísima (unos 2$ el litro de la más estándar) Otro dato curioso: si vais a repostar al lado del aeropuerto, evitad las primeras gasolineras, duplican el precio de la gasolina! Justo al lado hay otra gasolinera en la que los precios pasan como por arte de magia de los 4$ el litro a 2$.

MIAMI BEACH

Miami Beach está dividido entre North Beach (menos conocido y más tranquilo) y South Beach, dentro de ésta última se puede diferenciar SoFi (South of Five), que sería la zona que comprende desde la calle primera hasta la quinta. En South Beach, destacarían las siguientes áreas:

• Ocean Drive, desde la calle 5 hasta la 15:
  • Imprescindible. Es la calle mas famosa de Miami Beach y en ella se concentra gran parte de la animación a lo largo del día: por la mañana se abarrota de deportistas en su paseo marítimo (runners, patinadores, ciclistas, skaters…) y por la noche sus cafés, restaurantes y terrazas se llenan al ritmo de la música latina para poder tomar un cocktail, un pitcher o un bulldog (recomendaciones en los Bites)
  • Ocean Drive destaca por su concentración de edificios de diseño art decó, un estilo arquitectónico muy típico de EEUU carcaterizado por sus fachadas ornamentadas como la del Hotel Colony o el Breakwater. También en pleno paseo se encuentra la mansión de Gianni Versace en la cual fue asesinado en verano de 1997. Hoy en día aloja un elegante restaurante llamado Casa Casuarina.

• Lummus Park es un bonito parque frente a Ocean Drive inspirado en paisajes brasileños y rodeado de césped y palmeras. Destacan sus característicos bancos pintados de color turquesa desde los cuales puedes sentarte simplemente a divisar a la multitud de deportistas y paseantes que pasan continuamente por la zona.

• Espanola Way, entre la calle 14 y la 15, es una ecléctica calle peatonal con edificios de estilo colonial español repleta de restaurantes y bares de copas. En ella se respira auténtica fusión: camareros de todas las nacionalidades del mundo y restaurantes de distintas procedencias: cubanos, mexicanos, italianos, españoles… Se concentran en apenas dos manzanas de recorrido dando como resultado un ambiente muy vivo y animado. En esta calle hicimos un buen descubrimiento: «Lost Weekend» (más info en Bites)

• Lincoln Road, entre las calles 16 y 17, cruza de este a oeste todo Miami Beach y a lo largo de su recorrido ofrece grandes centros comerciales y cadenas de moda (H&M, Forever 21…) y destaca por el 1111 Building, un edificio que alberga una gran garaje abierto con forma de ovni en el que en los pisos superiores han abierto conocidas tiendas y con un gran restaurante en la planta más alta. Y cerca de él, el Colony Theater, anterior edificio de Paramount Pictures, una obra maestra del estilo Art Decó de los años 30.

• Collins Avenue y Washington Avenue son las otras dos grandes arterias de la ciudad, a lo largo de la primera se distribuyen los grandes hoteles como el Delano, el Ritz-Carlton o los míticos Loews o Surfcomber, este último también popular por sus fiestas nocturnas. La segunda, Washington Avenue, me llamó mucho la atención por ofrecer un gran contraste con el resto de zonas de Miami Beach: una sucesión de pequeños y modestos locales dedicados a la restauración alejados del lujo y opulencia de sus calles aledañas, decomisos, licorerías y tiendas de proximidad, lavanderías… Hasta un bar muy típico español en el que podrás desayunar churros y comer huevos fritos 😉

La vida en Miami Beach es sencilla: ir a la playa, salir a tomar un cocktail, ir a cenar, hacer deporte a la salida o a la puesta de sol… Pero dadas las fechas en las que estàbamos se notaba una agitación especial. Muchos más coches de lujo (Ferraris, Porches, Masserattis…) frente a las entradas de los principales hoteles, fiestas, saturación de gente de todos los lugares del mundo… Y además con el downton hirviendo de personas deseosas de despedir el año en el Bayfront Park viendo descender la Big Orange.

Nosotros decidimos pasar un dia completo descubriendo los secretos del downtown y hacer un pequeño paréntesis de la playa:

DOWNTOWN MIAMI

Cruzar de Miami Beach a Miami a través de cualquiera de sus carreteras elevadas impresiona por el increíble skyline que dibuja la cuidad. Miami City es un impresionante centro financiero y de negocios, y de su puerto parten el mayor número de cruceros del mundo. Caminar entre sus edificios te hace sentir pequeño a cada paso. Pero, más allá de verte superado por la gran ciudad, Miami te acoge y te resguarda, sus gentes son extrovertidas y amables, y aunque te pierdas siempre te ayudarán a encontrar el camino.

Un día en Miami puede dar mucho de sí:

• En el Bayfront Park, próximo al puerto del que parten los principales cruceros a las Bahamas o a los Cayos de Florida, està el pintoresco Bayside Markelplace, una sucesión de tiendas, recreativos, cafés y restaurantes ambientadas por la música y espectáculos callejeros en el que pasamos un rato muy agradable. Cuenta hasta con una especie de recinto que simula las ferias españolas con sus diferentes puestos «temáticos»: parrilla, tortillas, sangría, gambas… Además de tiovivos, zonas de recreo – y de descanso-… Un lugar entretenido en el que es difícil aburrirse.

• Little Havana: aunque algún local nos intentó persuadir para que no fuésemos, me alegro de no haber seguido finalmente su consejo!  Alrededor de la famosa calle ocho nos encontramos de repente con un pequeño pedazo de Cuba en Miami en el que se respiraba el aroma de los puros, se escuchaba alegre música latina y el tiempo parecía haberse detenido. En Little Havana cuentan con su propio paseo de la fama y lo más característico es poder ver a los locales jugando al dominó o al ajedrez en el Parque Máximo Gómez, mezclarse con ellos y vivir el ambiente de Cuba en estado puro mientras se escucha al «manisero» vendiendo sus cacahuetes a los jugadores. En Little Havana, imprescindible tomar el famoso café cubano (un espresso muuuy potente) o los míticos mojitos en los que ponen la verdadera caña de azúcar natural.

• Coconut Grove, uno de los barrios más bonitos de Miami, se encuentra en el sur de la ciudad y su belleza reside en su exhuberante vegetación: se funde con las aguas de la Bahía Vizcaína dando como resultado un ambiente luminoso y especial. En este barrio, los principales puntos de interés serían la animada Calle Brickell, el Museo Vizcaya o el Coco Walk, un complejo comercial con tiendas, bares y restaurantes ideal para tomarse algo a la caída de la tarde.

• Coral Gables representaría la vida más idílica americana, con sus grandes mansiones y casas señoriales. En el barrio destaca la arquitectura de estilo victoriano y sus cuidados jardines, además del Hotel Biltmore (que ofrece uno de los brunchs más exclusivos de Miami) o la Venetian Pool, una cantera sobre la que se construyó una enorme piscina con cascadas y grutas.

• Little Haití sería la version haitiana de Little Havana, una pequeña representación de Haití en Miami. La zona se encuentra ubicada al norte de la ciudad y aunque es recomendable no frecuentarla a la caída de la noche por su inseguridad, es un sitio muy valorado por su deliciosa comida a bajos precios.

• Wynwood Arts District es el centro neurálgico de la vida artística de Miami en el que podréis encontrar gran calidad de galerías y museos y en el que destacan los cientos de graffittis que decoran sus calles (Wynwood Walls), por lo que el barrio es un fuerte icono del arte callejero. Los segundos Sàbados de cada mes las galerías abren sus puertas para poder disfrutar libremente de sus obras. Wynwood formaría parte del denominado Design Distric de Miami.

 

ALREDEDORES

Si queréis aventuraros más allá del Downtown y de Miami Beach, las opciones son diversas. Los planes que para mí seria los atractivos serían:

• Los Cayos de Florida
  • A tan solo unos veinticinco kilómetros al Sur de Miami se encuentran los Cayos, un archipiélago de islas a las que se llega a través de la US1 Overseas Highway: una carretera que va atravesando de isla en isla desde Cayo Largo hasta Cayo Hueso (Key West), pasando por Islamorada, Marathon y Big Pine Key a lo largo de unos 200 kms. sobre las aguas del océano. Llegar al último de los cayos (Key West) lleva unas 3h de viaje, por lo que si decidís llegar hasta el final os recomiendo que paséis noche allí, ya que si no el viaje de ida y vuelta se os va a hacer un poco largo…
  • Cayo Largo es cayo más cercano a Miami y se caracteriza por tener unos increíbles arrecifes en los que poder hacer snorkel y buceo. Si solo queréis ir a Cayo Largo, existen excursiones en las que pasan a recogeros a vuestro hotel de Miami Beach y en 1h estaréis casi buceando.
  • Islamorada está compuesta por cinco islas y destaca por su tranquilidad y sus bonitas puestas de sol, mientras que en Marathon uno de los principales atractivos sería la playa El Sombrero
  • Finalmente, Key West, se encontraría a una distancia más próxima a Cuba que a Miami y en él dicen que nunca hace frío a lo largo del año. Dentro de la ciudad está la casa del ex-presidente Truman (conocida como Little White House), o la casa de Ernest Hemingway. Otro punto atractivo a visitar es su faro, o el Fuerte East Martello.
  • Independientemente de que llegues hasta Key West o tu viaje se detenga antes, los cayos te ofrecerán una cara más relajada de Miami y sobre todo unas aguas más tranquilas y cristalinas frente a las de Miami Beach.

 

• Bahamas: 
  • Desde el puerto de Miami parten a diario ferries y cruceros hasta estas increíbles islas y algunos de ellos también hacen parada en Key West. Una vez alí, encontraréis playas impresionantes y todo tipo de deportes acuáticos, vela, excursiones por los manglares…

• Turks and Caicos: 
  • A mí me atraen mucho más que las Bahamas, ya que son uno de los secretos mejor guardados del Caribe y por lo tanto están mucho menos saturadas de turistas. Llegar a ellas tiene una duración aproximada de 1,5 h en vuelo interno desde Miami.
  • El principal aliciente para visitarlas son sus playas vírgenes y la total ausencia de estrés: todo allí es calmado, tranquilo, fácil.
  • Podréis ver The Hole, en Long Bay, y sus cuevas Conch Bar Caves, nadar con delfines, ir a la Isla de las Iguanas.. e incluso participar en los grupos que se organizan para ver las estrellas.

• Los Everglades: 
  • Se trata de la zona más salvaje de todo EEUU y se encuentra a unos 40 minutos en coche desde Miami. El parque se atraviesa en aerodeslizador, viendo a su paso cocodrilos, caimanes y tortugas. Desde Miami, los tours de un día cuestan en torno a los 50€, incluyendo traslados desde el hotel.

• Orlando: 
  • Orlando cuenta con unos diez parques temáticos entre los que destacan Walt Disney World y Universal Studios. Nosotros no fuimos hasta allí, pero se trata de un plan imprescindible si viajáis con niños.

 

 

Los mejores planes para vuestra estancia en Miami:

• Ver a los Miami Heat en el American Airlines Arena es todo un espectáculo, a pesar de que, como pasó en el partido que vimos, perdieran. De hecho dicen de ellos que «juegan como nunca y pierden como siempre». El himno americano, la animación de las gradas… Merece la pena vivirlo. Y una de las cosas que más nos gustaron: salir en el descanso a la terraza a disfrutar de las increíbles vistas de Miami con todos sus edificios iluminados. «Let’s-go-Heat!»

• Tomar un Brunch el fin de semana. Era un plan que me apetecía mucho y no me defraudó! Miami está repleto de hoteles, restaurantes y cafés con Brunch los Domingos (algunos también los Sábados), y nos comentaron que el del Biltmore Hotel, en Coral Gables era el más famoso. Pero decidimos quedarnos cerca de casa y elegimos el de Terrazza, en the Shore Club, y nos encantó! Con un buffet italiano y americano y mimosas ilimitadas (un cocktail de champagne con zumo de naranja muy típico allí en los brunchs), lo sirven en un patio con una decoración que me recordó mucho a los Jardines Majorelle en Marrakech, y justo enfrente de la playa. Volveremos!

• Salir a tomar algo por Espanola Way y Ocean Drive:
  • OCEAN DRIVE. Cualquier lugar es bueno para sentarse y ver a la gente pasar. Si ademàs es la happy hour alucinaréis con los cocktails King size y los bulldogs: cocktails con dos botellas de Corona volcadas que se van vaciando a medida que se bebe!
  • ESPANOLA WAY.  Os dejo esta referencia: Lost Weekend (218 Española Way), nos sorprendió por su ambiente, música rock, cervezas artesanas e increíbles precios para la zona en la que se encuentra: pitchers (o lo que es lo mismo, jarras de 1L. de carveza de barril) por 7$. Muy recomendable!

• Ir a un Mall. En EEUU todo es a lo grande, y los centros comerciales no son una excepción. En Miami y alrededores, están el Dolophin Mall, el Aventura Mall, y, algo más alejado (a unos 40 kms.), al que fuimos nosotros: Sawgrass Mills Mall, un mega-outlet que casi parecía un poblado con las tiendas outlet de las principales marcas: Levi’s, New Balance, Converse, Jimmy Choo, Tory Burch, Calvin Klein, Chanel… Y miles de tiendas más. Debo reconocer que esperaba más descuentos, pero no esta mal para pasar un entretenido día de compras… 😜

• Alquilar una bici y recorrer todo South Beach, en especial Ocean Drive. Hay estaciones repartidas por todas partes y el coste es de 4$/30 minutos. Después de todas las caminatas que nos dimos calle arriba y calle abajo se agradece y es otra visión divertida y diferente de la ciudad!

• Salir por Nikki Beach. El típico Beach club en el que ver y dejarse ver. Caro, algo pretencioso y lleno de gente fashion, pero se puede comer también en plena playa y no está mal como visita curiosa. En el número 1 de Ocean Drive.

 

 

Podríamos decir que en Miami se puede comer de todo, aunque no todo es igual de accesible. Uno de los planes más emblemáticos para comer es ir al Joe’s Stone Crab, con sus míticos cangrejos, en el nº11 de Washington Avenue:

• Hamburguesas Auténticas: Burger & Beer Joint, en el 1766 de Bay Road, South Beach. Si coincide que además sacan «the motherburger», una hamburguesa de 4,5 kgs. de peso para compartir vais a alucinar! Un lugar muy auténtico, con pintadas en las paredes y con platos «big size» entre los que destacan hamburguesas premium con nombres de famosas canciones de rock o la posibilidad de ir creando tu propia hamburguesa escogiendo por separado cada uno de los ingredientes.

• Cocina de Mercado: Michael’s Genuine Food, en Miami City (130 NE 40th St, Miami). Un restaurante de gran calidad en el corazón del Design District. Su chef,  Michael Schwartz, fue galardonado con el prestigioso premio de la Fundación James Beard en 2010. En él encontraréis la nueva cocina americana muy orientada a los ingredientes y un ambiente más que agradable.

• Con vino: Cibo Wine Bar ( 200 South Pointe Dr, Miami Beach) Un concurrido restaurante en el que hay que hacer largas esperas para sentarse en una mesa y en el que es recomendable comer o cenar en la barra. El local es espectacular y la comida italiana muy rica. También cuenta con una buena carta de vinos. 

• Cocina Cubana: Larios on the Beach (820 Ocean Dr, Miami Beach). Cocina cubana «reinterpretada» por los dueños del local: los Stefan. Es un sitio mítico en Ocean Drive, al que al menos hay que entrar a curiosear.

• Romántico: Rusty Pelican (3201 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne). Con unas vistas espectaculares del atardecer desde su terraza (mejor reservar un poco antes, a eso de las 19h para ver la puesta de sol) y un servicio impecable. Romántico, distinguido, elegante y alejado de las masas de turistas, ya que se encuentra en Cayo Vizcaíno.

• Carne especial: Smith & Wollensky (1 Washington Ave, Miami Beach). Un sitio muy americano que hará vuestras delicias si sois amantes de la carne. Se encuentra en la zona de South Pointe y cuenta con unas buenas vistas al mar.

• Mexicano «callejero»: Taquiza (1506 Collins Ave, Miami Beach). Nos sorprendió mucho el estilo «Food Track» pero en un local a pie de calle, la informalidad del lugar y lo delicioso de su comida, 100% mexicana. Casi al lado de Española Way, en Collins Avenue, es un lugar pequeño pero con mucho encanto.

 

Para alojarse en Miami Beach, lo ideal es ubicarse entre las Calles 5 y 15, ya que alrededor de ellas se concentra el principal movimiento de la zona. Pero nosotros estuvimos en la Calle 23 y estamos muy contentos con nuestra elección! la playa y la zona en sí estaba menos masificada y desde la Calle 16 hacia adelante se pueden encontrará también cafés, supermercados y restaurantes. La zona que menos me gustó (me pareció demasiado aburrida) fue la comprendida entre las calles primera y quinta.

Alojarse en Miami no es para nada asequible, especialmente si os gusta estar frente a la playa. Teniendo en cuenta este hándicap, aquí algunas recomendaciones:

Una buena opción son los Apartamentos: Miami Beach cuenta con muchos condominios

• Roney Palace: es el lugar en el que  nos hospedamos nosotros y se encuentra en primera línea de playa. El condo cuenta con todo tipo de servicios (parking, piscina, seguridad y vigilancias las 24h…) y comparte zonas comunes con el 1 Hotel. Entre 110$ y 150$, según temporada.

• Shelborne: Aunque forma parte de un hotel, también cuenta con apartamentos con cocina propia. 135$.

• South Beach Vacation at the Sea: 1052 Ocean Drive, muy bien ubicado y con piscina. 250$.

Si preferís hotel, como os digo es complicado encontrarlo por precios inferiores a 100€ la noche. Os dejo tres buenas referencias:

• En el Roomate Lord Balfour, pueden encontrarse habitaciones por unos 160€ la noche con el aliciente de estar en pleno Ocean Drive (350 Ocean Dr, Miami Beach)

• Entre 120 y 140 € la noche, el SBH South Beach Hotel está en pleno Collins Avenue y en segunda línea de playa.

• Por último, el Impala Hotel es un hotel de una estrella muy recomendable y con una de las mejores ubicaciones en Collins Avenue (1228 Collins Ave, Miami Beach). Su precio: unos 129€ la noche. Pequeño, tranquilo y sin grandes lujos.

 

La temperatura en Miami es cálida y en pleno mes de Diciembre hemos tenido la suerte de disfrutar unos días estupendos que oscilaban entre los 22 y los 30 grados. Por ello, preparad una maleta y ligera (o mejor, llevadla a la mitad para cargarla con las compras del Mall!,)

Aquí algunas sugerencias:

Hasta aquí nuestro primer viaje del año, para mí un destino muy divertido! En esta ocasión saludo a los nuevos trippers colombianos y chilenos y me despido hasta la semana que viene, en la que seguiremos estrenando! (esperamos inaugurar la sección Eat!)

Happy 2016!!!

But I promised ! Just landed and some jet lag, but still feeling the warmth of its temperature, opened the year with a special post about MIAMI! The trip was amazing, if a little bumpy … American Airlines has placed us not too easy cancelarnos after the outbound flight and dificultarnos quite the back. But neither AA nor any extra inconvenience we have been finding the way prevented us from enjoying this amazing destination these days , here I bring all my discoveries!!!

Miami Beach is a city of more than 20 that make Miami Dade County , Florida. With its houses painted in bright colors features and stunning white sand beaches, it offers the image that everyone has in mind when he thinks of Miami: sun, sea , relaxation and leisure. It is connected to mainland Miami by five causeways and the view from above is priceless:

 

Just landed at the airport, you can take the Bus 150 with direct access to Miami Beach / South Beach for $2.5 the way, although we have discovered a sooo comfortable alternative that is Uber , which we have taken a big game on this trip . Do you plan to rent a car? I recommend it only if you also want to see the surrounding areas of Miami: Orlando, the Keys, the Everglades area … since in Miami Beach is impossible to park . Right next door is another gas station where the prices go as if by magic from $4 to $2 a liter .

MIAMI BEACH

• Lummus Park is a nice park in front of Ocean Drive inspired by Brazilian landscapes and surrounded by lawns and palm trees. Highlights its characteristic turquoise painted benches from which you can sit just make out the crowd of athletes and walkers who continually pass through the area .

• Espanola Way, between streets 14th and 15th, is an eclectic pedestrian street with buildings of Spanish colonial style full of restaurants and bars. Waiters all nationalities of the world and from different restaurants: Cuban , Mexican, Italian , Spanish … They focus on just two blocks from travel resulting a vivid and lively atmosphere it exudes genuine merger. In this street we did a good find: » Lost Weekend» (more information on Bites)

• Lincoln Road, between 16th and 17th streets, crossing from east to west throughout Miami Beach and along its route offers great shopping malls and fashion chains (H&M, Forever 21 … ) and highlighted by the 1111 Building, a building which houses a large carport shaped UFO in which on the upper floors have opened known shops and a great restaurant on the top floor . And near him, the Colony Theater, Paramount Pictures earlier building , a masterpiece of Art Deco style of the 30s .

• Collins Avenue y Washington Avenue are the other two major arteries of the city , along the first large hotels like the Delano, the Ritz -Carlton, Loews and the Surfcomber distributed , the latter also popular for its night parties. Second, Washington Ave., called my attention to offer a great contrast to other areas of Miami Beach: a succession of small and modest premises dedicated to the restoration away from the luxury and opulence of its surrounding streets, seizures, liquor and convenience stores, laundries … Even a very typical Spanish bar where you can eat breakfast churros and fried eggs 😉

Life in Miami Beach is simple: go to the beach , go for a cocktail , go to dinner, do sport at the exit or the sunset … But given the dates that were a special agitation was noticeable . Many more luxury cars ( Ferraris, Porches , Masserattis … ) against the entries in the main hotels, parties, saturation people from all over the world … And with boiling downton adults who want to dismiss the year at Bayfront Park looking down the Big Orange .

We decided to spend a full day discovering the secrets of the downtown and take a short break from the beach:

DOWNTOWN MIAMI

Crossing of Miami Beach to Miami through any of its elevated highways impressed by the amazing skyline that draws the city . Miami City is an impressive financial and business center, and in its port many cruises leave every day. Walking between buildings makes you feel small at every step. But beyond seeing surpassed by the big city, Miami welcomes you and protects you , people are outgoing and friendly, and even if you miss always will help you find the way.

One day in Miami can go a long way :

• At Bayfront Park, next to the port from which depart the major cruise to the Bahamas or the Florida Keys, is the picturesque Bayside Markelplace, a succession of shops, arcades, cafes and restaurants acclimated by music and street performances in which we very nice for a while. Has up to a kind of enclosure that simulates the Spanish fairs with their different «thematic» positions : grilled tortillas, bleeding , shrimp … In addition to rides, playgrounds – and rest -… A fun place where it is difficult to get bored.
  

• Little Havana: although some local tried to persuade us that we were not, I am glad not to have finally run its advise! About 8th Street we suddenly found ourselves with a little piece of Cuba in Miami where the aroma of cigars breathing is cheerful Latin music listening and time seemed to stand still. In Little Havana they have their own walk of fame and the most characteristic is to see local playing dominoes or chess in Maximo Gomez Park, mingle with them and experience the atmosphere of Cuba at its purest while listening to the «manisero» selling peanuts to the players. In Little Havana , must take the famous Cuban coffee (one sooo powerful espresso ) or mojitos mythical place where true natural sugar cane .

• Coconut Grove, one of the most beautiful neighborhoods in Miami, is located in the south of the city and its beauty lies in its lush vegetation merges with the waters of Biscayne Bay resulting in a bright and special atmosphere. In this neighborhood , the main points of interest would be the lively Brickell Street, the Biscay Museum and the Coco Walk, a shopping complex with shops, bars and restaurants, ideal for a drink at sundown.

• Coral Gables represent the most idyllic American life, with its grand mansions and stately homes. In the neighborhood stands the Victorian-style architecture and landscaped gardens , in addition to the Biltmore Hotel (offering one of the most exclusive brunches Miami ) or the Venetian Pool , a quarry on a huge pool with waterfalls and grottoes built.

• Little Haiti would be the Haitian version of Little Havana, a small representation of Haiti in Miami. The area is located north of the city and although it is not recommended to haunt nightfall for their insecurity, it is a place very appreciated for its delicious food at low prices.

• Wynwood Arts District is the nerve center of the artistic life of Miami where you can find great quality of galleries and museums and in highlighting the hundreds of graffiti that decorate its streets (Wynwood Walls) , so the neighborhood is a strong art icon street. The second Saturday of every month the galleries open their doors to freely enjoy their works. Wynwood be part of Miami called Design Distric.

 

SURROUNDING AREA:

If you want venturing beyond the Downtown and Miami Beach , the options are diverse. The plans would be attractive to me are:

• Florida Keys:
  

• Just about twenty kilometers south of Miami are the Keys, an archipelago of islands that you get through the US1 Overseas Highway : a road going through island hopping from Key Largo to Key West through Islamorada , Marathon and Big Pine Key along 200 kms. on the ocean waters . Reach the last of the Keys (Key West) takes about 3 hours of travel, so if you decide to go all the way , I recommend that you spend night there, because otherwise the journey back and forth are you going to do a little long …
• Key Largo is closer to Miami fell and is characterized by incredible reefs in which to snorkel and dive. If you only want to go to Key Largo, there are tours that go to pick you up at your hotel in Miami Beach and only in 1h you will be almost diving.
• Islamorada is comprised of five islands and is known for its tranquility and its beautiful sunsets, while in Marathon one of the main attractions would be El Sombrero beach.
• Finally, Key West, is closer to Cuba than Miami and it is said it is never cold throughout the year. Within the city is the home of former President Truman (known as Little White House), or the home of Ernest Hemingway. Another attractive point to visit is its lighthouse, or the Fort East Martello.
• Whether you come to Key West or to stop before your trip, the keys will offer a more relaxed side of Miami and above all a more peaceful and clear off the waters of Miami Beach

 

• Bahamas: 
  • From the port of Miami leave daily ferry and cruise to these amazing islands and some of them also make a stop in Key West . Once there , you will find stunning beaches and all kinds of water sports, sailing , hiking through the mangroves ..

• Turks and Caicos: 
  • I like them much more than the Bahamas, as they are one of the best kept secrets of the Caribbean and therefore are much less saturated with tourists. Reaching them has a duration of 1.5 h in internal flight from Miami.
  • The main attraction to visit them are their pristine beaches and the total absence of stress: everything there is calm , quiet, easy.        
  •  You can see The Hole at Long Bay, and caves Conch Bar Caves, swim with dolphins, go to the Island of the Iguanas .. and even participate in organized groups to watch the stars.

• Everglades: 
  • This is the wildest area throughout the US and is about 40 minutes drive from Miami. The park is crossed by hovercraft , watching his step crocodiles , alligators and turtles. From Miami, the day tours cost around 50 € , with the collection and transfer from the hotel.

• Orlando: 
  • Orlando has ten theme parks among them Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. We did not go there, but it is an essential plan if traveling with children.

 

The best plans for your stay in Miami:

• Watch the Miami Heat at American Airlines Arena is a spectacle, even though, as happened in the game we saw, lost. In fact they tell them to «play as ever and lost as ever» The star spangled banner, animation … the stands worth living it. And one of the things we liked best : take the rest to the terrace to enjoy the incredible views of Miami with all its illuminated buildings. «Lets- go- Heat»!!

• Taking Brunch on the weekend. It was a plan that I really wanted and did not disappoint me! Miami is full of hotels, restaurants and cafés with brunch on Sunday (some also on Saturdays) , and we noted that the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables was the most famous. But we finally decided to stay closer to home and choose the Terrazza, on the Shore Club, and loved it! With an Italian and American buffet and unlimited mimosas (champagne cocktail with orange juice in there very typical brunches ) , served on a patio with a decor that reminded me of the Majorelle Gardens in Marrakech , and right across from the Beach. We will be back!

• Going out  by Spanish Way and Ocean Drive:         
  • Ocean Drive) anywhere is good to sit and watch people go by . If it is also the happy hour you will discover King size cocktails and bulldogs: cocktails with two bottles of Corona dunks that are emptying as drunk!         
  • Spanola Way) I leave this link : Lost Weekend ( 218 Spanish Way) , we were surprised by its atmosphere, rock music, craft beers and amazing price for the area in which it is located: pitchers (or what is the same, jars 1L. of draft beer) for $7. Highly recommended!

• Go to a Mall: In the US everything is big, and shopping centers are no exception . In Miami Area are the Dolophin Mall, Aventura Mall, and more isolated (about 40 kms.): Sawgrass Mills Mall, a mega -outlet that was almost a town with outlet stores major brands: Levi’s , New Balance , Converse, Jimmy Choo , Tory Burch, Calvin Klein , Chanel … And thousands more stores. I must admit I expected more discounts, but not bad to spend a fun day of shopping …😜

• Rent a bike and travel around South Beach, particularly Ocean Drive. There are stations distributed throughout and the cost is $4/ 30 minutes. After all we figured walks up and down the streets is appreciated and is another fun and different view of the city!

• Go out to  Nikki Beach. The typical Beach club where seeing and being seen . Expensive, pretentious and full of fashion people, but can also eat on the beach and not bad as curious visit. At 1 Ocean Drive.

We could say that in Miami you can eat everything , but everything is not as accessible. One of the most iconic eating plans is going to Joe’s Stone Crab, with its mythical crabs. 11,  Washington Avenue:

• Authentic burgers: Burger & Beer Joint, at 1766 Bay Road, South Beach. If it matches also take «the motherburger», a 4.5 kgs. weight burger to share ‘re going to hallucinate ! A very authentic, with graffiti on the walls and dishes «big sizes» among them premium burgers with names of famous rock songs or the ability to be creating your own burger by choosing separately each of the ingredients.

• Quality Cuisine: Michael’s Genuine Food, (130 NE 40th St, Miami). A high quality restaurant in the heart of the Design District . Its chef , Michael Schwartz , was awarded the prestigious James Beard Foundation in 2010. In it you will find new ingredients geared towards kitchenette and a more pleasant atmosphere.

• Food & Wine: Cibo Wine Bar (200 South Pointe Dr, Miami Beach) A busy restaurant in which to do long wait to sit at a table and in which it is advisable to dine in the bar. The location is spectacular and rich Italian food. Good wine list.

• • Cuban Spirit: Larios on the Beach (820 Ocean Dr, Miami Beach) Cuban cuisine «reinterpreted» by local owners: the Stefan . It is a mythical place on Ocean Drive , which at least have to come to gawk .

• Romantic: Rusty Pelican (3201 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne). With spectacular sunset views from its terrace (best to book a little earlier, at about 19pm to see the sunset ) and impeccable service . Romantic, elegant , stylish and away from the masses of tourists as it is located in Key Biscayne.

• Special meat: Smith & Wollensky (1 Washington Ave, Miami Beach). A very American place that will make your delight if you are meat lovers . It is located in South Pointe and has good sea views.

• Mexican Street Food: Taquiza (1506 Collins Ave, Miami Beach). We were very surprised by the«Food Track» style but in a local street to the informality of the place and its delicious food, 100 % Mexican. Almost next to Spanish Way, on Collins Avenue , it is a small but charming place .

 

 

 

To stay in Miami Beach , ideally positioned between lanes 5 and 15 , as around them the main movement in the area is concentrated. But we were in the 23rd Street and we are very happy with our choice ! the beach and the area itself was less crowded and from 16th Street forward can also find cafes , supermarkets and restaurants. The area I liked least ( I found it too boring ) was between the first and fifth streets.

Staying in Miami is not at all affordable, especially if you like being in front of the beach. Considering this handicap , here are some recommendations:

A good option are the apartments: Miami Beach has many condos:

• Roney Palace: It is the place where we stayed and is literally on the beach . The condo has all amenities (parking , swimming pool, 24h security and surveillance … ) and share common areas with 1 hotel . Between $ 110 and $ 150 , depending on season .

• Shelborne: Although part of a hotel also features apartments & studios with kitchen. $135 .

• South Beach Vacation at the Sea: 1052 Ocean Drive,very well located and with a pool. $250.
  

If you prefer hotel , as I say it is difficult to find for less than 100 € per night price . I leave you three good references:

•  Roomate Lord Balfour, where rooms can be found for about 160 € the night with the incentive of being right in Ocean Drive ( 350 Ocean Dr, Miami Beach)

• 120-140€ per night: SBH South Beach Hotel.  In the Collins Avenue, and two blocks from the beach.

• And finally, Impala Hotel  is a highly recommended one star hotel with one of the best locations in Collins Avenue ( 1228 Collins Ave, Miami Beach). Prices about 129 € per night. Small, quiet and no frills.

 

The temperature in Miami is warm and in the month of December we have been fortunate to enjoy some great days ranging between 22 and 30 degrees. Therefore , prepare a suitcase and light (or rather carry it in half to charge it at the shopping Mall!!)
