Elegimos Cuba para pasar este verano, además de ciudades increíbles como La Habana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Viñales… por sus cayos. Esperábamos encontrar playas cristalinas de arena blanca y Caribe en estado puro, pero lo que nunca imaginamos es que podríamos disfrutar de ellas casi en exclusividad. Haber viajado en Agosto –que allí no es temporada alta– nos permitió tener al alcance el paraíso junto a un reducido número de personas, algo que hasta el momento nos había costado mucho encontrar (recuerdo nuestra “calita secreta“ en Assos, Kefalonia, el verano pasado, pero tuvimos de buscarla a conciencia!). 

Los cayos de Cuba son verdaderos reductos de paz y tranquilidad, un retiro perfecto para  descansar del ajetreo de la capital y sin duda la antesala ideal para quedarse como nuevo antes de volver a casa y a la rutina diaria. Son un lugar que inspira a los creativos, incita a pensar a los reflexivos, anima a hacer deporte si os gusta la vida sana y, por supuesto, imprescindibles para tumbarse al sol, leer o no hacer nada si sois de los cómodos. También son un destino “todo incluido“, con decenas de hoteles y resorts en los que la máxima es disfrutar y dejar momentáneamente de lado las preocupaciones. Así que, aunque desde mi perspectiva no son un destino en sí mismo (para este tipo de planes sin duda iría “a lo grande“ tipo Maldivas o Seychelles o “a nuestros paraísos cercanos“ como Baleares o Canarias), sí me parecen un broche final perfecto cuando se visita Cuba.

La primera gran tesitura a la que os vais a tener que enfrentar es qué cayo elegir. No es una decisión sencilla y recuerdo haber tenido muchas dudas antes de hacer el viaje, así que he pensado concentrar toda la información en un único post por si puede ayudar en el futuro a quienes no tengan del todo claro: qué tipo de playas os vais a encontrar, cómo acceder desde La Habana, su oferta hotelera y de ocio, y en definitiva, el ambiente que respiran para que decidáis el más conveniente para vosotros. He descartado muchos cayos que actualmente no están lo suficientemente preparados para el turismo (aunque sí para la gente local y cuentan con parajes naturales maravillosos que visitar en alguna excursión) y me he centrado en los que seguramente sean vuestros elegidos por contar con alojamientos adecuados para hospedarse (aunque sea solo uno, como es el caso de Cayo Levisa, Cayo Jutías o Cayo Ensenachos…) Esta semana…

¿Qué cayo elijo para mi viaje a Cuba?

Antes de entrar en cada uno de ellos con mayor detalle, lo primero es decidir entre el Norte (los islotes situados sobre la costa atlántica), el Sur (en la costa caribeña de Cuba), el noroeste con zonas como la del Golfo de México y Cayo Levisa o Cayo Jutías o el noreste con la Península de Saetía y Cayo Saetía.

• Los cayos del Norte fueron llamados en el siglo XVI Jardines del Rey en honor a Fernando el Católico por parte de sus colonizadores y forman el archipiélago mas numeroso de la isla. Aquí destacan Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Santa María o Cayo Ensenachos como los más conocidos o los que suelen formar parte siempre de los paquetes turísticos, pero también se encuentran otros como Cayo Romano, Cayo Sabinal o Cayo Guajaba. Se puede llegar a ellos tanto en autobús (unas 6 horas de viaje, si todo va bien!) como en avión, aterrizando en el aeropuerto del Cayo Las Brujas.
• Los cayos del Sur son algo más recónditos, salvajes y naturales, y entre todos destaca Cayo Largo del Sur, en pleno Caribe. Para acceder a ellos lo mejor es el avión (a este cayo salen vuelos cada día).
• Los cayos del noroeste y noreste, entre los que destacan Cayo Saetía, Cayo Levisa y Cayo Jutías, son menos frecuentados por los turistas y en ellos encontramos, sobre todo, tranquilidad y precios económicos. Una opción ideal para quienes busquen la faceta más auténtica de la Cuba isleña con presupuestos más ajustados.

 

 

Cayo Coco toma su nombre del pájaro coco, un tipo de ave exótica de la zona, y es uno de los cayos más conocidos y visitados de Cuba. Tiene su propio aeropuerto, lo que le convierte en uno de los cayos más accesible y cómodo al recibir vuelos tanto domésticos como internacionales cada día, y destaca por tener una amplia oferta hotelera.

Principales alicientes: además de playas impresionantes como son Los Flamencos, Las Coloradas (con unas cuevas marinas muy cercanas a la playa), y Jaula(donde pueden verse rayas y tiburones de arrecife a unos 30 metros de la orilla), su gran atractivo son los flamencos salvajes de color rosa que se pasean a sus anchas por Playa Larga, una especie autóctona digna de ver. También tienen un pájaro, el Iris Blanco, que vive únicamente en esta isla. La zona cuenta con muchos lagos artificiales para la pesca de truchas. Y, finalmente, otros de sus pluses es poder visitar a pie el cayo vecino, Cayo Guillermo, al que se encuentra unida por un camino natural (eso sí, solo la parte más cercana ya que hasta el centro del siguiente cayo hay unos 45 minutos en coche)

¿Para quién? Cayo Coco suele ser una de las opciones más recurrente de “combinado“ junto con La Habana, por lo que suele estar lleno de parejas de luna de miel, familias con un pack turístico y viajeros de todas las procedencias del Mundo. 

¿Dónde alojarse? Aunque en la zona se localizan hoteles de cadenas de gran renombre, uno de los hoteles más recomendables es el Meliá Cayo Coco: por su cercanía a la playa de los flamencos, por su servicio y porque es uno de los hoteles en los que si te aburres es porque quieres! La oferta de actividades es muy completa (y no solo para niños), incluyendo desde yoga a tiro con arco pasando por clases de nick boxing… ideal para quemar calorías después de comer en su restaurante buffet o en alguno de sus restaurantes a la carta, de snacks, o de su chiringuito en la playa. Y si todavía os quedáis con más ganas de hacer cosas, justo al lado se encuentra La Gaviota, una zona comercial con tiendas, heladerías, actuaciones en directo… para salir un poco de la monotonía del hotel. Sus precios rondan los 92€ por noche, todo incluido!

Cómo llegar desde La Habana: para ir a este cayo lo más cómodo es llegar en avión y no solo dede La Habana, ya que cuenta con conexiones internacionales. Pero, al estar cercano a La Habana, también se puede llegar por carretera o incluso en barco.

 

 

Cayo Guillermo es “el hermano pequeño“ de Cayo Coco, mucho menos masificado y concurrido. Aunque su escasa superficie tiene oferta hotelera, la menor presencia de turistas hace que tenga un entorno más virgen,  ideal para bucear o navegar. 

Principales alicientes: si hay algo que destaca notablemente en este cayo es Playa Pilar, una playa idílica que toma su nombre de Ernest Hemingway, quien solía recorrerla habitualmente a bordo de su yate “Pilar“ y que se considera una de las mejores del país por sus amplios arenales blancos con dunas de más de diez metros de altura y el color característico de sus aguas. También se encuentra muy próximo a la que se considera la segunda barrera de coral mas grande del Mundo y, dada su proximidad a Cayo Coco, también es posible ver algunos flamencos. Los alrededores tienen rincones y paisajes más rústicos o agrestes para hacer alguna excursión a pie, y las condiciones climatológicas y de viento hacen de este cayo un destino ideal para el Kitesurf o realizar actividades como la pesca de altura o la visita a sus manglares. 

¿Para quién? Este cayo está indicado para quienes necesiten desconectar del estrés, para los amantes de la naturaleza y sobre todo, para los fans de la vida submarina. Es muy frecuentado por buceadores y viajeros que priorizan los espacios vírgenes a tener todas las comodidades a su alcance, así como amantes del kitesurf deseosos de cabalgar entre sus olas.

¿Dónde alojarse? En este caso, os diría que el Iberostar Selection Playa Pilar, en plena Playa Pilar y con cuatro restaurantes + un buffet impresionante. Un oasis en un entorno maravilloso a partir de 120€ la noche en Todo Incluido.

Cómo llegar desde La Habana: el trayecto es muy similar al de Cayo Coco al estar tan cercanos, aunque si llegáis desde el aeropuerto en taxi tendréis que contar unos 45 minutos de trayecto.

 

Cayo Santa María, el más grande

Cayo Santa María es el más grande de La Herradura y en su costa se suceden lo largo de 10 kilómetros una playa una tras otra, destacando las de Perla Blanca (a la que se accede andando varios kilómetros por estar rodeada de vegetación y que es perfecta si os gusta hacer snorkel), Cuatro Puntas, Las Caletas o Playa Cañón, con sus aguas poco profundas, calmadas y protegidas por la barrera de coral. En la costa Norte se concentran los principales hoteles, mientras que en la sur se encuentra una zona de manglares y ensenadas. sus 10 kilómetros de costa se pueden encontrar numerosas playas caracterizadas por su calma y sus numerosos arrecifes de coral.

Principales alicientes: llegar al cayo atravesando su impresionante Pedraplén, una carretera de casi 50 kms. literalmente sobre el mar que une Cayo Las Brujas, Ensenachos y Santa María con el pueblo de Caibarién, lugar residencial principal para los cubanos que cada día se desplazan a trabajar a los hoteles y resorts de la zona. Esta carretera cuenta con un total de 46 puentes y durante la salida y la puesta de sol se llena de aves acuáticas buscando alimentos. También es posible visitar sus pueblos, el propio Caibarién o Remedios, este último con edificios coloniales y una historia muy ligada a los ataques de los piratas corsarios. El cayo, además, tiene su propio delfinario, dos plazas comerciales (el “pueblo Las Dunas“ y el “pueblo La Estrella“) y el Pontón, convertido en atracción turística al ser derribado por el huracán de los años 90 y próximo a los restos del buque de San Pascual a los que se puede acceder buceando o en catamarán, realizando una ruta muy interesante por playas vírgenes y piscinas naturales. Finalmente, está en Refugio de Fauna, un área natural donde habitan diferentes especies de la zona como mamíferos, aves o reptiles.

¿Para quién? Su amplitud de opciones y versatilidad hacen de este cayo un lugar interesante para todos los tipos de viajero: desde familias hasta parejas, pasando por grupos de amigos, amantes de la naturaleza, “beach lovers“… Esto fue lo que nos decidió principalmente para elegirlo, y la verdad es que nos gustó bastante alojarnos allí.

¿Dónde alojarse? Una de las cosas que mas incertidumbre nos daba era escoger el hotel. Finalmente nos decantamos por el Royalton Cayo Santa María tras nuestra experiencia tan positiva en Cancún con la cadena Royalton.  Tanto las instalaciones, como el régimen adults only y su zona de la playa (desde mi punto de vista, la mejor de todas) nos encantaron, pero quizá mejoraría la comida (aunque en Cuba el Todo Incluido en lo que se refiere a gastronomía es un poco inferior). Tras la experiencia, a lo mejor os recomendaría el Meliá Cayo Santa María: hablando con otros viajeros creo que puede ser una apuesta más segura en los 360º. Precios desde 110€, todo incluido.

Cómo llegar desde La Habana: nosotros llegamos a Cayo Santa María en un transfer colectivo en autobús que, aunque a mí me encantó porque atravesaba pueblecitos agrícolas con mucho encanto rodeados de plantaciones de café y plataneros, se hace bastante largo. En realidad son unos 380 kms, pero entre que van recogiendo a todos los clientes en sus hoteles, hacen las paradas pertinentes y teniendo en cuenta las carreteras, el viaje se te pone en unas 6-7 horas que se te hacen larguísimas. Sin duda, recomiendo coger el avión ya que el vuelo dura solo media hora. Eso sí, los precios suben: nuestro transfer costó 15€ por persona ida y vuelta, mientras que los vuelos no bajaban de los 150€ y creo recordar que no había todos los días de la semana. Al llegar al aeropuerto tendréis que tomar un taxi o un transfer hasta vuestro hotel.

 

 

Solo unas líneas para hablaros de Cayo Ensenachos, una pequeña isla conectada con Cayo Santa María a través del Pedraplén que cuenta con tan solo un hotel de lujo, el Iberostar Selection Ensenachos, en medio de paisajes casi inalterados por el hombre (precios desde 140€ en Todo Incluido). Este pequeño cayo tiene dos playas impresionantes: Playa Ensenachos y El Megano. Desde luego, es el cayo más indicado para los que no quieran hacer nada más que desconectar, relajarse y olvidarse de todo por unos días… aunque yo creo que al segundo día se me quedaría corto y necesitaría hacer cosas! 😉

 

Cayo Levisa se encuentra al Oeste, a tan solo dos horas y media de La Habana, y  únicamente accesible a través del ferry que parte desde Palma Rubia (20 minutos de trayecto), al norte de la provincia de Pinar Del Río. Se trata de un lugar casi intacto con un único hotel, una playa que ostenta el título de la mejor playa de Pinar Del Río – la playa de Punta Arena -, y además es un lugar en el que los cubanos tienen prohibido pasar la noche. Si buscáis un lugar para relajaros bajo la sombra de un cocotero, dormir en una cabaña frente al mar… este es uno de los mejores. Aquí se pueden visitar los manglares, ver pelícanos, hacer snorkel o perderse por sus pinares, y mucha gente lo escoge como destino para pasar el día y volverse después a casa. Si decidís pasar noche, no os queda otra que alojaros en el Hotel Cayo Levisa, un lugar silencioso con 80 cabañas repartidas a lo largo de 7 kms. de arenas blancas y aguas cristalinas por 129€ la noche en pensión completa.

Cayo Jutías forma parte del Archipiélago de los Colorados al norte de Pinar Del Río y a él se accede por una pasarela de 5 kms. desde tierra firme. También es un destino perfecto para los amantes de la naturaleza por su entorno rural virgen sobrecogedor y sus playas cristalinas de arena blanca prácticamente desiertas. Destaca la Playa de las Estrellas, llena de estrellas de mar, y por sus manglares, así como por sus característicos paisajes en los que los troncos de los árboles emanan como por arte de magia desde el agua del mar. Lamentablemente, no existen hospedajes en el Cayo, los alojamientos más próximos se encuentran en la localidad de Santa Lucía.

Cayo Saetía, en la costa norte de Cuba en la provincia de Holguín, está a nada más y nada menos que a uno 900 kilómetros de La Habana y en la punta Este de la isla. Pero esta distancia lleva asociada en contrapartida la posibilidad de disfrutar de playas de ensueño o entornos naturales exóticos a precios mucho más bajos, por lo que es el destino más indicado para los viajeros que cuentan con presupuestos ajustados. Se puede llegar a él tanto por tierra como por aire o mar, y destaca tanto por sus arrecifes de coral que albergan coloridos bancos de peces tropicales como por la posibilidad de hacer hasta un safari en el que ver cebras, búfalos y antílopes. Aquí, una de las mejores alternativas es buscarse un alojamiento en AirBnB o alojarse en el único hotel que existe, el Villa Cayo Saetía del grupo Gaviota, por unos 80$ con desayuno.

 

 

Terminamos con el que dicen que es el mejor cayo de la isla… Cayo Largo del Sur. En la costa sur, en el Archipiélago de los Canarreos y a 180 kms. de La Habana, este cayo es frecuentado por nudistas y naturistas y destaca especialmente por su gran privacidad, por sus playas impresionantes que parecen piscinas naturales – incluso una de ellas popular por no calentarse – y por su perfecta ubicación en el Caribe. En contrapartida, es uno de los menos accesibles.

Principales alicientes: su entorno natural escasamente modificado por el hombre con 27 kms. de playas paradisiacas entre las que destacan Playa Paraíso (en la parte Oeste, la más íntima y privada), Lindamar (al sur y con 5 kms. de arena blanca), Playa Sirena (también al Oeste, 100% puro Caribe y es la que no se calienta nunca) y multitud de playas vírgenes (Playa Tortuga, Playa Blanca, Playa Punta Mal Tiempo…) accesibles en coche con arrecifes coralinos, estrellas de mar, caracolas y un fondo marino espectacular ideal para el buceo y la pesca deportiva. Su diversa fauna: iguanas, pelícanos, flamencos, tortugas marinas y un sinfín de peces. Sus más de 30 áreas de buceo donde observar tiburones, rayas, tortugas, morenas o barracudas, un Centro de Rescate de Tortugas Marinas, destinado a su cuidado y protección, rutas de senderismo, excursiones a los islotes cercanos como Cayo Iguana (que recuerda a una especie de Parque Jurásico) o Cayo Cantiles (lleno de simios), Cayo Pájaros, Cayo Rico o la Isla de la Juventud, nadar con delfines… las posibilidades son infinitas!

¿Para quién? En primer lugar diría que este cayo es para los que puedan disponer de varios días para poder disfrutarlo y puedan invertir tanto tiempo como dinero para amortizarlo. Pero quizás lo veo más para un plan en pareja que para un plan familiar con niños, de hecho suele es un destino estrella para las parejas en su Luna de Miel.

¿Dónde alojarse? Lo mejor de la oferta hotelera de este cayo es que su máxima es el respeto al entorno natural que le rodea. La mayoría de los complejos se sitúan en la zona sur y occidental de la isla, cuentan con acceso directo a la playa (aunque son playas en las que suele haber viento), y ofrecen un servicio de bus hasta Playa Sirena o Playa Paraíso que os recomiendo (especialmente a partir de las 13:30h que se empiezan a vaciar porque la gente se va a comer). Uno de los mejores es el Sol Cayo Largo, un todo incluido 4 estrellas con 600 metros de playa y bungalows construidos sobre pilotes, 3 restaurantes y 4 bares, desde 140€ la noche.

Cómo llegar desde La Habana: la casi única manera es en avión, ya que cuenta con su propio aeropuerto con dos vuelos diarios y está a un radio de entre 4 y 10 kms. del pueblo y zonas hoteleras. Generalmente los vuelos domésticos suelen incluir el traslado al hotel a través de agencias locales como Cubatur, Guamá o Havanatur, pero si no es así el precio de los taxis es económico. El principal problema es que los precios de los vuelos son altos, y que la compañía que vuela desde La Habana no tiene horarios definidos (normalmente tienes que comprar el vuelo y son ellos los que te contactan un día antes para confirmarte cuándo es la salida) . Para sacar el billete, podéis entrar en Solways o en las recepciones de los hoteles de La Habana donde se contratan las excursiones. Si no es vía avión, no hay lineas marítimas regulares desde la isla de Cuba por lo que tendríais que tener un barco privado o conocerlo mediante alguna excursión desde La Habana o Varadero.

We chose Cuba to spend this summer, as well as incredible cities such as Havana, Cienfuegos, Trinidad, Viñales … for its keys. We hoped to find crystalline beaches of white sand and the Caribbean in its purest form, but what we never imagined is that we could enjoy them almost exclusively. Having traveled in August -which is not high season there- allowed us to have paradise within reach with a small number of people, something that until now had cost us a lot to find (remember our “secret little beach” in Assos, Kefalonia, last summer, but we had to do a hard search!).

The keys of Cuba are pure redoubts of peace and tranquility, a perfect retreat to rest from the hustle and bustle of the capital and undoubtedly the ideal prelude to stay as new before returning home and to the daily routine. They are a place that inspires creatives, encourages thoughtful thinking, encourages sports if you like a healthy life and, of course, essential to lie in the sun, read or do nothing if you are comfortable. They are also an «all-inclusive» destination, with dozens of hotels and resorts in which the maximum is to enjoy and momentarily ignore worries. So, although from my perspective they are not a destination in itself (for this type of plans, I would certainly go “to the fullest” like Maldives or Seychelles or “to our nearby paradises” like the Balearic or the Canary Islands), they do seem like a perfect ending when visiting Cuba.

The first thing you are going to have to face is which key to choose. It is not a simple decision and I remember having many doubts before making the trip, so I have thought to concentrate all the information in a single post in case it can help in the future to those who are not entirely clear: what kind of beaches are you going to find, how to access from Havana, the hotel and leisure offer, and ultimately, the environment they have… so that you decide what is more convenient for you. I have discarded many keys that are currently not sufficiently prepared for tourism (although for local people and have wonderful natural places to visit on an excursion) and I have focused on those who are surely your chosen ones for having adequate accommodations for to stay (even if only one, as is the case of Cayo Levisa, Cayo Jutías or Cayo Ensenachos) This week …

Which key I choose for my trip to Cuba?

Before entering each of them in greater detail, the first thing is to decide between the North (the islets located on the Atlantic coast), the South (on the Caribbean coast of Cuba), the northwest with areas such as the Gulf of Mexico and Cayo Levisa or Cayo Jutías or the northeast with the Saetía Peninsula and Saetía Cay.

• The Northern cays were called in the 16th century Jardines del Rey in honor of Fernando the Catholic by their colonizers and form the largest archipelago of the island. Here Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo, Cayo Santa María or Cayo Ensenachos stand out as the best known or the ones that are always part of the tour packages, but there are also others such as Cayo Romano, Cayo Sabinal or Cayo Guajaba. You can reach them both by bus (about 6 hours of travel, if all goes well!) and by plane, landing at the airport of Cayo Las Brujas.

• The keys of the northeast and northwest, among which Cayo Saetía, Cayo Levisa and Cayo Jutías stand out, are less frequented by tourists and in them we find, above all, tranquility and economic prices. An ideal option for those looking for the most authentic facet of island Cuba with tighter budgets.

 

 

Cayo Coco takes its name from the coconut bird, a type of exotic bird in the area, and is one of the best known and most visited keys in Cuba. It has its own airport, which makes it one of the most accesible and comfortable keys to receive both domestic and international flights ever day, and stands out for having a wide range of hotels. 

Main attractions: in addition to impressive beaches such as Los Flamencos, Las Coloradas (with some sea caves very close to the beach), and Jaula (where you can see reef rays and sharks about 30 meters from the shore), its great attraction are the wild pink flamingos that walk freely along Playa Larga, a native species worth seeing. They also have a bird, the White Iris, who lives only on this island. The area has many artificial lakes for trout fishing. And, finally, other of its pluses is to be able to visit on foot the neighboring key, Cayo Guillermo, to which it is linked by a natural path (yes, only the closest part since until the center of the next key there are about 45 minutes by car)

For whom? Cayo Coco is usually one of the most recurring options of “combined packs” together with Havana, so it is usually full of honeymoon couples, families with a tourist pack and travelers from all over the world.

Where to stay: Although in the area are renowned chain hotels, one of the most recommended hotels is Meliá Cayo Coco: for its proximity to the beach of flamingos, for its service and because it is one of the hotels that if you get bored is because you want to! The offer of activities is very complete (and not only for children), including from yoga to archery through nick boxing classes … ideal for burning calories after eating in its buffet restaurant or in one of its “a la carte“ restaurants , snacks, or in the beach bar. And if you still want to do things, right next to it is La Gaviota, a commercial area with shops, ice cream parlors, live performances … to get out of the monotony of the hotel. Prices around € 92 per night, all inclusive.

How to get there from Havana: to go to this key, the most comfortable is to arrive by plane and not only from Havana, since it has international connections. But, being close to Havana, it can also be reached by road or even by boat.

 

 

 

Cayo Guillermo is «the little brother» of Cayo Coco, much less crowded and crowded. Although its small area has a hotel offer, the lower presence of tourists makes it have a more virgin environment, ideal for diving or sailing.

Main incentives: if there is something that stands out notably in this key is Playa Pilar, an idyllic beach that takes its name from Ernest Hemingway, who used to travel it regularly aboard its yacht “Pilar” and which is considered one of the best in the country by its wide white sand dunes with more than ten meters high and the characteristic color of its waters. It is also very close to what is considered the second largest barrier reef in the World and, given its proximity to Cayo Coco, it is also possible to see some flamingos. The surroundings have corners and more rustic or rugged landscapes to do some excursion on foot, and the weather and wind conditions make this key an ideal destination for kitesurfing or activities such as deep sea fishing or visiting its mangroves.

For whom? This key is indicated for those who need to disconnect from stress, for nature lovers and, above all, for fans of underwater life. It is very frequented by divers and travelers who prioritize virgin spaces to have all the comforts at their fingertips, as well as kitesurfers eager to ride among their waves.

Where to stay: In this case, I would tell you that the Iberostar Selection Playa Pilar, is the best option: in Playa Pilar and with four restaurants + an impressive buffet, is an oasis in a wonderful environment from € 120 a night in All Inclusive.

How to get there from Havana: the route is very similar to Cayo Coco being so close, although if you arrive from the airport by taxi you will have to count about 45 minutes.

Cayo Santa María, the biggest

Cayo Santa María is the largest in La Herradura and on its coast there are 10 kilometers of beach one after the other, highlighting those of Perla Blanca (which is accessed by walking several kilometers because it is surrounded by vegetation and is perfect if you like snorkeling), Cuatro Puntas, Las Caletas or Playa Cañón, with its shallow waters, calm and protected by the coral reef. The main hotels are concentrated on the North coast, while in the south there is an area of ​​mangroves and inlets. In its 10 kilometers of coastline you can find numerous beaches characterized by its calm and its numerous coral reefs.

Main incentives: to reach the key crossing its impressive Pedraplén, a road of almost 50 kms. literally on the sea that connects Cayo Las Brujas, Ensenachos and Santa María with the town of Caibarién, the main residential place for Cubans who travel to work in the hotels and resorts in the area every day. This road has a total of 46 bridges and during sunrise and sunset it is filled with water birds looking for food. It is also possible to visit its villages, Caibarién or Remedios, the latter with colonial buildings and a history closely linked to the attacks of privateer pirates. The key also has its own dolphinarium, two shopping plazas (the “Las Dunas” and  “La Estrella”) and the Pontoon, turned into a tourist attraction when it was demolished by the hurricane of the 90s and close to the remains of the San Pascual ship that can be accessed by diving or catamaran, making a very interesting route through pristine beaches and natural pools. Finally, it has a Wildlife Refuge, a natural area where different species of the area inhabit such as mammals, birds or reptiles.

For whom? Its wide range of options and versatility make this key an interesting place for all types of travelers: from families to couples, through groups of friends, nature lovers, «beach lovers» … This is what we decided mainly to choose it, and we really liked staying there.

Where to stay: One of the things that gave us more uncertainty was choosing the hotel. Finally we opted for Royalton Cayo Santa María after our positive experience in Cancun with the Royalton chain. Both the facilities, such as the adults only regime and its beach area (from my point of view, the best of all) we loved, but perhaps it would improve the food (although in Cuba the All Inclusive in terms of gastronomy is a little lower). After the experience, maybe I would recommend Meliá Cayo Santa María: talking with other travelers I think it can be a safer bet in the 360º. Prices from € 110, all inclusive.

How to get there from Havana: we arrived at Cayo Santa María in a collective bus transfer that, although I loved it because it was going through charming little villages surrounded by coffee plantations and banana trees, it is quite long. Actually there are about 380 kms, but between that they are picking up all the customers in their hotels, they make the relevant stops and taking into account the roads, the trip gets you in about 6-7 hours that you get very long. Without a doubt, I recommend taking the plane since the flight lasts only half an hour. Of course, the prices go up: our transfer cost € 15 per person round trip, while the flights did not go down from € 150 and I think I remember that there were not every day of the week. Upon arriving at the airport you will have to take a taxi or a transfer to your hotel.

 

Just a few lines to talk about Cayo Ensenachos, a small island connected to Cayo Santa María through the Pedraplen that has only one luxury hotel, the Iberostar Selection Ensenachos, in the middle of landscapes almost unaltered by man (prices from € 140 in All Inclusive). This small key has two stunning beaches: Ensenachos Beach and El Megano. Of course, it is the most appropriate key for those who do not want to do anything but disconnect, relax and forget everything for a few days … although I think that on the second day I would fall short and need to do things! 😉

 

Cayo Levisa is located to the west, just two and a half hours from Havana, and only accessible via the ferry that leaves from Palma Rubia (20 minutes away), north of the province of Pinar Del Río. It is an almost intact place with a single hotel, a beach that holds the title of the best beach in Pinar Del Río – the beach of Punta Arena -, and it is also a place where Cubans are forbidden to spend the night. If you are looking for a place to relax under the shade of a coconut tree, sleep in a cabin facing the sea … this is one of the best. Here you can visit the mangroves, see pelicans, snorkel or get lost in its pine forests, and many people choose it as a destination to spend the day and then return home. If you decide to spend the night, you have no choice but to stay in Cayo Levisa Hotel, a quiet place with 80 cabanas spread over 7 kms. of white sands and crystalline waters for € 129 a night in full board.

Cayo Jutías is part of the Los Colorados Archipelago north of Pinar Del Río and is accessed by a 5km walkway. from the mainland It is also a perfect destination for nature lovers because of its overwhelming unspoiled rural surroundings and its practically deserted white sand crystalline beaches. The Playa de las Estrellas stands out, full of starfish, and for its mangroves, as well as for its characteristic landscapes in which tree trunks emanate as if by magic from the sea water. Unfortunately, there are no accommodations in the Cayo, the closest accommodations are located in the town of Santa Lucia.

Cayo Saetía, on the north coast of Cuba in the province of Holguin, is nothing more and nothing less than one 900 kilometers from Havana and on the eastern tip of the island. But this distance is associated in return the possibility of enjoying dream beaches or exotic natural environments at much lower prices, making it the most suitable destination for travelers who have tight budgets. It can be reached both by land and by air or sea, and it stands out for its coral reefs that house colorful banks of tropical fish as well as the possibility of making a safari in which to see zebras, buffaloes and antelopes. Here, one of the best alternatives is to look for an accommodation in AirBnB or stay in the only hotel available: Villa Cayo Saetía from the Gaviota group, for about $ 80 with breakfast.

 

 

We finish with what they say is the best key on the island … Cayo Largo del Sur. On the south coast, in the Canarreos Archipelago and 180 km. from Havana, this key is frequented by nudists and naturists and stands out especially for its great privacy, for its impressive beaches that look like natural pools – even one of them popular for not getting hot – and for its perfect location in the Caribbean. In return, it is one of the least accessible.

Main incentives: its natural environment scarcely modified by man with 27 kms. of paradisiacal beaches among which Playa Paraíso (in the West, the most intimate and private), Lindamar (to the south and with 5 kms. of white sand), Sirena Beach (also to the West, 100% pure Caribbean and is the that never gets hot) and a multitude of pristine beaches (Playa Tortuga, Playa Blanca, Punta Mal Tiempo Beach …) accessible by car with coral reefs, starfish, seashells and a spectacular seabed ideal for diving and fishing sporty. Its diverse fauna: iguanas, pelicans, flamingos, sea turtles and endless fish. Its more than 30 diving areas where you can observe sharks, rays, turtles, brunettes or barracudas, a Marine Turtle Rescue Center, for your care and protection, hiking trails, excursions to nearby islets such as Iguana Cay (reminiscent of a kind of Jurassic Park) or Cayo Cantiles (full of apes), Cayo Pájaros, Cayo Rico or Isla de la Juventud, swimming with dolphins … the possibilities are endless!

For whom? First of all I would say that this key is for those who can have several days to enjoy it and can invest both time and money to pay it off. But perhaps I see it more for a couple plan than for a family plan with children, in fact it is usually a star destination for couples on their Honeymoon.

Where to stay: the best of the hotel offer of this key is that its maximum is respect for the natural environment that surrounds it. Most of the complexes are located in the southern and western part of the island, have direct access to the beach (although they are usually windy beaches), and offer a bus service to Playa Sirena or Playa Paraíso that you I recommend (especially after 1:30 p.m. that they start to empty because people are going to eat). One of the best is Sol Cayo Largo,  an all-inclusive 4-star hotel with 600 meters of beach and bungalows built on stilts, 3 restaurants and 4 bars, from € 140 per night.

How to get there from Havana: the almost only way is by plane, since it has its own airport with two daily flights and is between 4 and 10 km. of the town and hotel zones. Generally domestic flights usually include transfer to the hotel through local agencies such as Cubatur, Guamá or Havanatour, but if not, the price of taxis is cheap. The main problem is that the prices of the flights are high, and that the company that flies from Havana does not have defined schedules (normally you have to buy the flight and they are the ones who contact you the day before to confirm when the departure is) . To get the ticket, you can enter Solways website or go to the receptions of the hotels in Havana where excursions are hired. If it is not by plane, there are no regular maritime lines from the island of Cuba so you would have to have a private boat or do an excursion from Havana or Varadero.
