«Es justamente la posibilidad de realizar un sueño lo que hace la vida interesante» El Alquimista, Paulo Coelho

Recuerdo haber leído esta frase junto a otras memorables como la sempiterna “cuando una persona desea realmente algo, el Universo entero conspira para que pueda realizar su sueño“ hace ya bastantes años en El Alquimista de Paulo Coelho, un libro en el que el verdadero sueño del protagonista era viajar y en el que el viaje terminó cambiándole a él. No sé si este libro sembró la primera semilla originaria de mi espíritu traveler, pero lo que sí tengo claro es que me descubrió que el Mundo estaba lleno de lugares por descubrir y de aventuras por disfrutar.

Después de éste, han habido varios libros que me han marcado y han estimulado mi gen viajero… libros que desde mi punto de vista todo amante de los viajes debería leer al menos una vez en la vida – si conocéis a algún viajero empedernido, puede una buena idea para regalar! -. Es difícil seleccionar unos pocos y seguramente a medida que vaya descubriendo nuevos mis preferencias irán variando, pero esta semana quiero compartir con vosotros algunos de ellos, con muy diferentes estilos y enfoques, para que tengáis donde elegir.

5 libros de viajes con los que querrás irte muy lejos

 

Jorge Sierra – Hacia cualquier otra parte

 

Es uno de los últimos títulos que han pasado por mis manos y ha gustado bastante la historia:  su autor, Jorge Sierra, inicia un viaje junto con dos amigos en el que pretenden dar la vuelta al mundo a bordo de “Naranjito“ (su 2CV) emulando la historia de un libro de viajes de los años 60. Tras un par de meses de viaje tras salir de La Coruña y al llegar a Ankara (Turquía), se queda solo y pasa por un momento crucial en el que debe tomar la decisión de seguir adelante con el viaje o volverse a casa, decidiendo finalmente seguir en solitario hasta Nueva Zelanda recorriendo más de 80.000 kms. en los que pasa por Irán, Pakistan, India, Tailandia o Malasia y cuyas fotos y mapas originales también aparecen en el libro. Durante el camino, narra sus encuentros con la gente que se va encontrando por el camino, las diferentes culturas con las que interactúa, las tradiciones de los diferentes países, sus experiencias y anécdotas… te va a atrapando poco a poco y, sobre todo, te hace sentir ese cosquilleo que solo tienes cuando viajas. A mí no solo me ha encantado sino que me ha recordado lo bonito que es viajar también solo, y lo recomiendo para aquellos que suelan hacerlo de manera habitual. Lo tenéis en Amazon por 21,75€.

 

 

Tiziano Terzani – Un adivino me dijo

 

Otro libro que te atrapa desde el principio, lleno de magia, supersticiones y espiritualidad. La historia transcurre en el año 1976 cuando un adivino de Hong Kong recomienda al reportero italiano Tiziano Terzani evitar coger un avión en el año 1993 ya que su vida podría estar en peligro. En la noche de fin de año de 1992, estando en Laos, el protagonista decide iniciar el nuevo año haciendo caso al adivino y planteándose una nueva manera de viajar más tranquila utilizando el tren o el barco para poder seguir desempeñando su trabajo de corresponsal en Asia. Y, de esta manera, el libro te va adentrando en un recorrido por el continente asiático (Tailandia, Malasia, Indonesia, Singapur, Vietnam, Birmania, India, Camboya…), países en los que el protagonista busca diferentes adivinos para contrastar sus opiniones sobre su futuro y conocer sus historias y que terminan convirtiéndose también protagonistas en su viaje. Finalmente, y para regresar a su país, se narra la experiencia a bordo del tren Transiberiano desde Moscú hasta Florencia. En definitiva, un libro en el que vais a descubrir un enfoque de viaje romántico, auténtico y místico y que os va a hacer volver a enamoraros de los viajes. Es un libro difícil de conseguir porque está descatalogado, pero en Amazon lo tenéis de segunda mano por 43,08€

Sarah McDonald – Holy Cow, an Indian Adventure

 

Si como yo sois amantes de la India, esta novela os va encantar… se trata de una historia de corte aparentemente cómico en la superficie pero que en realidad esconde un trasfondo mucho más profundo de búsqueda de espiritualidad. La historia trata sobre una chica que viaja a la India por vacaciones y a la que no le gusta para nada la experiencia de caos, contaminación y pobreza, pero mientras espera su vuelo de vuelta un mendigo le lee la palma de la mano y le desvela que regresará. Con el tiempo, se enamora de un hombre al que le trasladan a la India y once años después de su viaje se ve obligada a mudarse allí con él. La protagonista narra su experiencia en este país con historias que van desde lo más divertido hasta lo más triste y dramático, hablando de sus costumbres, de la hospitalidad de su gente, de sus tradiciones… El libro profundiza en las diferentes religiones de la India, ya que la protagonista enferma de neumonía y comienza un viaje de descubrimiento en busca del significado de la vida y de la muerte en el que pasa tiempo con budistas, con los hindúes, tiene encuentros con el cristianismo, el islam, los yoguis, los swamis y hasta con estrellas de Bollywood!… aprendiendo lecciones importantes de cada una de ellas y consiguiendo crecer como persona eliminando todos los prejuicios con los que inicialmente llega al país. Robyn Davidson – Tracks

 

Todo un clásico y un must para el taveler… que recoge la experiencia de la australiana Robyn Davidson al abandonar Alice Springs en el año 1975 y emprender un viaje hasta el Océano Índico atravesando el hostil desierto australiano huyendo del sedentarismo, la monotonía y que acaba siendo un reflejo de su propia búsqueda interior. Este viaje fue documentado por National Geographic con unas fotografías maravillosas realizadas por Rick Smolan, que acompañó a Robyn durante 9 meses de su aventura. La protagonista aprendió a manejar a los camellos y a sobrevivir en el desierto y, junto a cuatro camellos y su perra, inició una aventura en la que se describen sus peripecias, sus miedos, sus experiencias y sus encuentros con las tribus aborígenes y los peligros a los que se enfrenta… algo que en sus propias palabras define así:

“Experimenté esa sensación de hundimiento que sientes cuando sabes que te has engañado a hacer. Algo difícil y no hay vuelta atrás “.

 

 

Toda una historia de descubrimiento y transformación gracias al viaje, de obligatoria lectura para los amantes de la aventura, los retos, los desafíos, y para quienes no se rinden ante las adversidades. Os dejo aquí el link al libro en inglés.

 

Paul Theroux – El Tao del Viajero

 

Terminamos con un libro que me parece ideal para regalar: una especie de manual de viajes a caballo entre guía filosófica y libro de viajes cargado de reflexiones, citas y pasajes memorable, lugares fascinantes y decepcionantes, referencias a viajeros míticos, escritores y títulos ineludibles… en definitiva una miscelánea simpática, caótica, original y particular de elementos relacionados con el viaje. Invita a dejarse llevar y a entretenerse con su descripción de los viajeros más conocidos: desde los que viajan sin agenda abiertos al descubrimiento hasta los más preparados, con sus recomendaciones de sitios peligrosos a evitar y paraísos a descubrir, e incluso la sorprendente lista de los imprescindibles para viajar. Ideal para romper prejuicios y predisponer positivamente a viajar: «A veces me parece que hay una búsqueda fundamental en el viaje, la búsqueda de lo inesperado». Lo encontraréis en Amazon por 18,05€.

«It is precisely the possibility of realizing a dream that makes life interesting» The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho

I remember reading this phrase along with other memorable ones such as the everlasting «when a person really wants something, the whole Universe conspires so that he can realize his dream» several years ago in The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, a book in which the real dream of the protagonist was to travel and in which the trip ended up changing him. I do not know if this book sowed the first original seed of my traveler spirit, but what I do know is that I discovered that the World was full of places to discover and adventures to be enjoyed.

After this, there have been several books that have marked me and stimulated my traveling gene … books that from my point of view every lover of travel should read at least once in life – if you know some inveterate traveler, it could be a good gift! – It is difficult to select a few and surely as I discover new my preferences will vary, but this week I want to share with you some of them, with very different styles and approaches, so that you have to choose.

 

5 travel- inspired books with which you will want to go far away

 

Jorge Sierra – To any other part

 

It is one of the last titles that have passed through my hands and has liked the story a lot: its author, Jorge Sierra, starts a trip together with two friends in which they intend to go around the world on board «Naranjito» (his 2CV ) emulating the history of a travel book of the 60s. After a couple of months of travel after leaving La Coruña and arriving in Ankara (Turkey), he is left alone and goes through a crucial moment in which he must take the decision to continue with the trip or to return home, finally deciding to continue alone until New Zealand traveling more than 80,000 kms. in which it passes through Iran, Pakistan, India, Thailand or Malaysia and whose original photos and maps also appear in the book. Along the way, he narrates his encounters with the people he meets along the way, the different cultures with which he interacts, the traditions of the different countries, his experiences and anecdotes … he is going to catch you little by little and, everything, makes you feel that tickle you only have when you travel. I have not only loved it but it has reminded me of how nice it is to travel alone, and I recommend it for those who usually do it on a regular basis. You’ll find it in Amazon (21,75€).

 

 

Tiziano Terzani – A Fortune-teller told me

 

Another book that catches you from the beginning, full of magic, superstitions and spirituality. The story takes place in 1976 when a Hong Kong fortune-teller recommended the Italian reporter Tiziano Terzani avoid catching a plane in 1993 as his life could be in danger. On the year-end night of 1992, being in Laos, the protagonist decided to start the new year, paying attention to the fortune-teller and considering a new way to travel more calmly using the train or the ship so that he could continue to work as a correspondent in Asia.  And, in this way, the book takes you on a journey through the Asian continent (Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam, Burma, India, Cambodia …), countries in which the protagonist seeks different fortune-tellers to contrast their opinions about their future and knowing their stories and that end up becoming protagonists in their journey. Finally, and to return to his country, the experience is narrated on board the Trans-Siberian train from Moscow to Florence. In short, a book in which you will discover a romantic, authentic and mystical approach to travel that will make you fall in love with travel again. It’s a difficult book to get because it’s out of print, but in Amazon you have it secondhand for € 43.08.

Sarah McDonald – Holy Cow, an Indian Adventure

 

If you are a lover of India, this novel will enchant you … it is a story of a seemingly comical cut on the surface but which in reality hides a much deeper background of the search for spirituality. The story is about a girl who travels to India on vacation and who does not like at all the experience of chaos, pollution and poverty, but while waiting for her flight back a beggar reads her palm and reveals that return. Eventually, she falls in love with a man who is transferred to India and eleven years after her trip she is forced to move there with him. The protagonist narrates her experience in this country with stories that range from the most funny to the saddest and most dramatic, talking about their customs, the hospitality of their people, their traditions … The book delves into the different religions of the India, as the protagonist sick with pneumonia and begins a journey of discovery in search of the meaning of life and death in which he spends time with Buddhists, with Hindus, has encounters with Christianity, Islam, yogis, the swamis and even Bollywood stars! … learning important lessons from each one of them and getting to grow as a person eliminating all the prejudices with which they initially arrive in the country. Robyn Davidson – Tracks

 

A classic and a must for tavelers … that gathers the experience of the Australian Robyn Davidson when leaving Alice Springs in the year 1975 and embark on a trip to the Indian Ocean crossing the hostile Australian desert, fleeing the sedentary lifestyle, the monotony and it ends up being a reflection of your own inner search. This trip was documented by National Geographic with some wonderful photographs taken by Rick Smolan, who accompanied Robyn for 9 months of his adventure. The protagonist learned to handle the camels and survive in the desert and, together with four camels and her dog, she started an adventure in which she describes her adventures, her fears, her experiences and her encounters with the aboriginal tribes and the dangers to those he faces … something that in his own words defines it like this:

«I experienced that sinking feeling you feel when you know you’ve been tricked into doing. Something difficult and there is no going back «.

 

 

A whole history of discovery and transformation thanks to travel, mandatory reading for lovers of adventure, challenges, challenges, and for those who do not surrender to adversity.  Link to the book.

Paul Theroux – The traveler’s Tao

 

We finish with a book that I think is ideal to give as a gift: a kind of travel manual on horseback between philosophical guide and travel book full of reflections, quotations and memorable passages, fascinating and disappointing places, references to mythical travelers, writers and inescapable titles. .. in short, a sympathetic, chaotic, original and particular miscellany of elements related to travel. It invites you to get carried away and entertain with your description of the most famous travelers: from those who travel without an open agenda to discovery to the most prepared, with their recommendations of dangerous places to avoid and paradises to discover, and even the surprising list of essentials to travel. Ideal to break prejudices and positively predispose to travel: «Sometimes it seems to me that there is a fundamental search in the trip, the search for the unexpected».
