Estos días he estado bastante entretenida con temas deco… como os comenté hace ya algún tiempo en este post, me encanta que mi casa me transporte a lugares exóticos y que me recuerde los destinos que he visitado, por lo que hasta ahora la decoración de cada estancia estaba inspirada en un lugar diferente del planeta. Sin embargo, hace tiempo que me apetece mucho hacer un viaje al desierto y últimamente he estado buscando ideas para ir dando forma a esta idea. Por el camino, me he ido enamorando de su misterioso y encanto, de esa combinación del tapiz monocromático beige de la arena salpicada de los colores verdes brillantes de los cactus o los tonos cálidos y rosados de sus increíbles puestas de sol.

A medida que indagaba más, iba descubriendo alojamientos en mitad del desierto o en sus alrededores con una decoración chulísima, llena de colorido y detalles naturales… y casi sin darme cuenta me he visto envuelta en un proceso de renovación “temática“ de la casa donde todo se ha ido transformando poco a poco en ambientes naturales, rústicos, llenos de contrastes, siguiendo una tendencia decorativa que se inspira en el desierto de EEUU (Arizona, Colorado…) o en Nuevo México que a día de hoy recibe diferentes nombres: Southwestern Deco, Tex-Mex o estilo Santa Fe.

Este estilo decorativo se remonta a las primeras casas de adobe de la esquina opuesta a Nueva Inglaterra dentro de los Estados Unidos, donde los primeros pobladores españoles establecieron sus raíces. Las paredes se dejaban en su estado natural o se pintaban de color blanco para reflejar el sol, los suelos eran de piedra o de terracota y las ventanas se vestían con contraventanas para proteger del viento y del sol. La ausencia y parquedad de elementos decorativos realza un mobiliario sólido, azulejos o materiales nobles como el cuero o las pieles. Y aunque todo respira tradición, el estilo se ha actualizado y se ha vuelto un poco más ecléctico con colores arena, simplicidad, textiles bohemios, estampados soiux, cactus, cestos de fibras naturales, cráneos artificiales de venado, aires entre mexicanos y de cowboy … evocando una libertad salvaje y esa energía especial y relajante de cuando estás al aire libre, pero sin salir de casa.

La verdad es que estoy encantada con el resultado y me encanta el contrapunto de entrar en casa tras un largo día recorriendo las calles de asfalto de la ciudad y respirar esta atmósfera totalmente diferente de lo urbano, luminosa, cálida, y de vuelta a lo esencial.

Y como hacía mucho tiempo que no publicaba un post de deco… aquí van algunas de las claves que he ido descubriendo estos días para todos aquellos que quieran recrear esa magia del desierto en su propio hogar.

 

1. La sencillez

Si hay algo que caracteriza a este estilo es su sencillez: a pesar de que se utilizan colores muy intensos en los detalles, la base sobre la que se empiezan a construir los diferentes ambientes es bastante rústica, orgánica y esencial. Se utilizan muebles elaborados con maderas toscas, de grandes volúmenes, vigas, puertas con vetas y grietas, estantes de formas irregulares… si estáis en la duda, recordad que menos es más, y si tenéis que esforzaros en algo es mejor focalizar en los detalles.

 

 

2. Colores tradicionales

Una buena parte del resultado final reside en la paleta de colores: los colores sólidos y neutros asociados a la arena del desierto se combinan con los tonos azules y turquesa del cielo, el verde de los cactus y los naranjas y amarillos del paisaje, dando como resultado interiores muy cálidos y llenos de energía.

 

 

3. Mobiliario rústico

Todos los muebles que escojáis para vuestros ambientes inspirados en el desierto deben cumplir la regla de ser muy rústicos y preferiblemente “inacabados“ o desgastados. Una mesa de centro de madera de burl (un material hecho de protuberancias de árboles), un aparador de nogal, un taburete o un banco de madera tallada, o cualquier pieza de madera hecha a mano servirán.

En cuanto al sofá o a los sillones, los tapizados de cuero son un acierto seguro que además aportan un toque un poco más contemporáneo: elegidlos en colores arena, coñac o incluso en un relajante rosa pastel y sobre todo aseguraros de evitar los colores oscuros.

 

 

4. Textiles llamativos y atrevidos

En este tipo de decoración gran parte de la personalidad se la llevan los tejidos: generalmente utilizan telas resistentes y naturales con estampados muy coloridos que inundan alfombras, cojines o incluso tapices en la pared. Lo ideal es escogerlos con patrones inspirados en los nativos americanos, o incluso apostar por cuero o imitaciones de pieles de animales que ayuden a aportare el toque más cowboy, y mezclarlos sin miedo e incluso en capas.

¿Lo esencial? Una alfombra o kilim con diseños geométricos, algunos cojines coloridos y algún punto de contraste en las tapicerías. Yo os cuento un secreto que he experimentado en casa y que creo que funciona fenomenal: mezclar varias alfombras superpuestas con diferentes motivos para crear contrastes, os animo a probarlo!

 

 

5. Detalles que aporten autenticidad 

Si queréis clavar el estilo del sudoeste, detalles como una cerámica llamativa, vasijas de arcilla o de barro cocido, jarrones y cuencos de terracota, azulejos pintados a mano, accesorios de hierro forjado, atrapasueños, objetos con forma de huesos / cráneos de animales marcarán la diferencia.

Un detalle decorativo que sigue la tradición local es hilvanar chiles rojos picantes secados previamente al sol con alambre formando guirnaldas de colores que llenan de colorido y de un sabor muy auténtico a las estancias.

Y otra cosa que nunca falla es recurrir a obras de arte o pinturas de temática natural que recreen el paisaje desértico (una fotografía de Joshua Tree, impresiones de cactus o de palmeras…) o motivos étnicos abstractos. 

 

 

6. Integrar las plantas en la decoración

En un interior moderno inspirado en el desierto es esencial incorporar plantas resistentes a la sequía: el cactus es el rey de este estilo decorativo, pero también valen las suculentas, el aloe vera, las palmeras… e incluso un ficus que además es super fácil de cuidar y mantener dentro de casa. Utilizad cestas de mimbre o de fibras naturales como macetas, y combinadlas en diferentes colores y estampados para dar contraste. Nunca falla!

These days I’ve been quite entertained with deco issues … as I mentioned some time ago in this post, I love that my house transports me to exotic places and reminds me of the destinations I have visited, so until now the decoration of each room was inspired by a different place on the planet. However, I have been wanting a trip to the desert for a long time and lately I’ve been looking for ideas to shape this idea. Along the way, I’ve fallen in love with its mysterious and charming, that combination of the beige monochrome carpet of sand dotted with the bright green colors of the cactus or the warm and pink tones of its incredible sunsets.

As I inquired more, I was discovering lodgings in the middle of the desert or in its surroundings with a very cool decoration, full of color and natural details … and almost without realizing it I have been involved in a process of «thematic» renovation of the house where everything has been transformed little by little into natural, rustic environments, full of contrasts, following a decorative trend that is inspired by the desert of the USA (Arizona, Colorado …) or in New Mexico that today receives different names: Southwestern Deco, Tex-Mex or Santa Fe style.

This decorative style goes back to the first adobe houses on the opposite corner of New England within the United States, where the first Spanish settlers established their roots. The walls were left in their natural state or were painted white to reflect the sun, the floors were made of stone or terracotta and the windows were dressed with shutters to protect from the wind and the sun. The absence and paucity of decorative elements enhances solid furniture, tiles or noble materials such as leather or leather. And although everything breathes tradition, the style has been updated and has become a bit more eclectic with sand colors, simplicity, bohemian textiles, soiux prints, cactus, natural fiber baskets, artificial deer skulls, airs between Mexicans and cowboy. .. evoking a wild freedom and that special and relaxing energy of when you are outdoors, but without leaving home.

The truth is that I am delighted with the result and I love the counterpoint of entering the house after a long day walking the asphalt streets of the city and breathe this atmosphere totally different from the urban, bright, warm, and back to basics .

And since I had not published a deco post for a long time … here are some of the keys that I have been discovering these days for all those who want to recreate that desert magic in their own home.

 

1. The simplicity

If there is something that characterizes this style is its simplicity: although very intense colors are used in the details, the basis on which they begin to build different environments is quite rustic, organic and essential. They use furniture made of rough wood, large volumes, beams, doors with veins and cracks, shelves of irregular shapes … if you are in doubt, remember that less is more, and if you have to work on something it is better to focus on the details.

 

 

2. Traditional colors

A good part of the final result resides in the color palette: the solid and neutral colors associated with the desert sand combine with the blue and turquoise tones of the sky, the green of the cactus and the orange and yellow of the landscape, giving as result in very warm interiors and full of energy.

 

 

3. Rustic furniture

All the furniture you choose for your environments inspired by the desert must comply with the rule of being very rustic and preferably «unfinished» or worn. A burl wood coffee table (a material made from protrusions of trees), a walnut dresser, a stool or a carved wooden bench, or any piece of wood made by hand will serve.

As for the sofa or armchairs, leather upholstery is a sure bet that also bring a touch more contemporary: choose them in sand colors, cognac or even in a relaxing pastel pink and above all make sure to avoid dark colors.

 

4. Bold textiles

In this type of decoration, a great part of the personality is taken by the fabrics: generally they use resistant and natural fabrics with colorful prints that flood carpets, cushions or even wall hangings. The ideal is to choose them with patterns inspired by Native Americans, or even bet on leather or imitations of animal skins that help bring the touch more cowboy, and mix them without fear and even in layers.

The essential? A carpet or kilim with geometric designs, some colorful cushions and some point of contrast in the upholstery. I tell you a secret that I have experienced at home and I think it works phenomenally: mix several overlaid carpets with different patterns to create contrasts, I encourage you to try it!

 

 

5. Details that provide authenticity

If you want to nail the southwestern style, details such as striking ceramics, clay or terracotta pots, terracotta vases and bowls, hand-painted tiles, wrought iron accessories, dream catchers, bone-shaped objects / animal skulls will mark the difference.

A decorative detail that follows the local tradition is to baste spicy red chilies dried before the sun with wire forming garlands of colors that fill the rooms with color and a very authentic flavor.

And another thing that never fails is to use art or paintings of natural themes that recreate the desert landscape (a photograph of Joshua Tree, impressions of cactus or palm trees …) or abstract ethnic motifs.

 

6. Integrate the plants in the decoration

In a modern interior inspired by the desert it is essential to incorporate plants resistant to drought: the cactus is the king of this decorative style, but also worth the succulents, aloe vera, palm trees … and even a ficus that is also super easy to care for and keep indoors. Use wicker baskets or natural fibers as pots, and combine them in different colors and patterns to give contrast. It never fails!
