Uno de mis lugares preferidos de Fuerteventura es un islote situado muy cerquita de Corralejo, a un poco más de 2 kms. al norte de la isla, y que teníamos el privilegio de ver cada mañana al levantarnos desde nuestra terraza, La Isla de Lobos.

Este pequeño islote de unos 6 km2 es una excursión perfecta para pasar un día, aunque también cuenta con una zona de acampada y nosotros vimos un pequeño poblado de pescadores con casitas en las que vimos alojados algunas familias y turistas en pleno Puertito de Lobos. Su curioso nombre viene de las focas monje o lobos marinos que en el pasado vivían en la zona formando una colonia. Varias playas, un faro, un restaurante, un Centro de Interpretación, una caseta de información turística, un volcán, un sendero para recorrer la isla y el encantador Puertito de Lobos son los principales hitos que nos aguardan una vez lleguemos en ferry.

 

Cogiendo el Ferry desde Corralejo

Cada día el ferry Lobos Express sale desde Corralejo a las 10h, 11h, 12h, 13h, 15:30h, 16:30h y 17:30h y en tan solo 15 minutos atraviesa lo que se conoce como El Rio (un brazo de mar que separa ambas zonas) y te deja en el puerto cercano a la Playa de la Calera. El precio por adulto de ida y vuelta es de 15€ y los horarios de vuelta desde Lobos son: 11:15h, 12:15h, 14h, 16h, 17h y 18h. Nosotros decidimos ir el el de las 11h y volver en el de las 17h, pero si pensáis hacer senderismo recomendamos coger el de las 10h y volver en el de las 18h.

 

El sendero circular que recorre la isla

En unas dos o tres horas es posible ver toda la isla gracias a un sendero que la recorre de punta a punta fácilmente accesible para todos los niveles. Aunque es posible realizarlo en chanclas, yo os recomiendo llevaros unas zapatillas (no demasiado nuevas, para no estropearlas) y después cambiarse en las playas. También se puede realizar en bici (vimos que mucha gente se la traía desde Corralejo en el ferry), pero como estábamos en Diciembre y el calor era bastante soportable, nosotros decidimos caminar.

Nada más bajar del ferry nos encontramos dos rutas, ambas terminaban en el faro, el punto mas al norte de la isla. Nosotros elegimos el de la izquierda porque queríamos terminar en el Puertito y pasar un buen rato allí antes de volver a Corralejo, pero mucha gente toma el camino contrario porque para poder comer en el único restaurante del islote es necesario pasarse a reservar mesa antes de las 11h de la mañana.

Cogiendo nuestro camino llegamos en un momento a la Playa de la Calera o Playa de la Concha y en unos unos 3,5 kms. terminamos en el Faro de Martiño atravesando el  malpaís, una zona del interior arenosa y volcánica, pudiendo subir en el trayecto al Volcán de la Calera desde el que disfrutamos unas vistas únicas de los alrededores. Desde ahí continuamos hasta el encantador Puertito de Lobos y volvimos para coger el ferry de vuelta. Pero si elegís el de la derecha, podréis hacer el camino inverso empezando por el Puertito de Lobos.

Para que podáis haceros una idea de tiempos, desde el lugar en el que te deja el ferry hasta la Playa de la Calera o de la Concha tomando el camino izquierdo hay unos 7-10 mins., después a la Montaña de la Caldera en unos 50 mins. y otros 40 mins. hasta el faro. Y por el camino derecho, se llega al Puertito en unos 7-10 mins., otros 20 mins. hasta Las Lagunillas y 50 mins. más hasta el faro.

 

La Playa de la Calera o Playa de la Concha

Este impresionante rincón esconde un agua inamovible que parece casi una laguna de aguas completamente cristalinas y un silencio sepulcral que la convierte en un lugar especialmente relajante y casi místico. Cuando llegamos, apenas había cuatro personas en ella, pudimos coger un “corralito majorero“ o semicírculo formado por piedras para protegerte del viento (aunque aquel día apenas había), pero nos pareció perfecto para montar nuestro pequeño ambiente y disfrutar de aquel entorno mágico. No sé si a lo largo del día se llenaría de gente, pero el tiempo que pasamos la tuvimos prácticamente para nosotros solos. En la playa vimos protegidos por una cerca unos viejos restos arqueológicos romanos, y se dice que en el pasado en esta zona se fabricaban tintes desde el procesamiento de moluscos marinos.

 

El Volcán o Montaña de la Caldera

La siguiente parada tras un chapuzón en las tranquilas aguas de la Playa de la Concha es la Montaña de la Caldera, un viejo volcán de unos 100 metros de altura (la cota más alta del islote) al que os recomiendo subir si queréis disfrutar de unas vistas increíbles de Lanzarote y Fuerteventura. Para llegar a ella, hay que caminar unos 700 metros desde la playa y desde ahí tomar un sendero hasta un desvío que va cogiendo un poco de desnivel y pendiente hasta llegar a la cima en la que está el mirador, ideal para parar a tomar fotos y descansar un poco antes de empezar el descenso y seguir la caminata.

 

El Faro de Martiño

Si seguimos el sendero hacia el norte de la isla, pasamos por el Llano de Los Labrantes, lugar en el que residían los constructores portugueses del faro en el que siguen quedando restos de sus viviendas, por el Morro de Las Pilas y el Morro Escarchado, el Morro Colorado, y al final subimos a la montaña de Martiño hasta llegar al faro. El faro, construido con piedras de basalto y cal, está a una altura de unos 29 metros sobre el mar y su último dueño, Antoñito el farero, fue uno de los personajes más conocidos de la isla por ofrecer caldo o auxilio a los visitantes de Lobos y por fundar el único restaurante que a día de hoy existe en la isla.

 

Las Lagunillas o Lagunitas

La vuelta desde el faro se realiza de manera paralela al mar por caminos un tanto áridos y pasa por Las Lagunillas, una bahía donde se forma una especie de estuario o de piscinas naturales bastante bonita en la que también se puede ver la siempreviva característica del islote de Lobos. Es un lugar super tranquilo y perfecto para hacer un alto en el camino a reponer fuerzas o descansar un ratito de la caminata.

El Puertito de Lobos

Cuando empezamos a ver un pequeño poblado en el camino supimos que habíamos llegando al que se convirtió inmediatamente en mi sitio preferido de Lobos, el Puertito. Nada mas llegar y ver sus casitas de pescadores (algunas incluso excavadas en la roca), el color del agua, el ambiente animado por el ajetreo del restaurante y el pequeño embarcadero de madera, nos enamoramos perdidamente de aquel lugar. El mar era  simplemente irreal, tan calmado que parece una piscina infinita, y los fondos de arena blancos salpicados de rocas oscuras nos animaron a hacer snorkel un buen rato. Habíamos traído comida de casa y paramos a comer justo al lado del restaurante, en el que compramos la bebida, con una de las mejores vistas que hemos tenido nunca. Pero lo mejor fue entablar conversación con uno de los pescadores que cedía amablemente a los visitantes que no tenían sitio en el restaurante su mesa para que pidiesen comida y se la tomaran allí, que nos contó que en ese momento se iba a zambullir para conseguir algún que otro pulpo. Pasamos un par de horas disfrutando de aquel rincón tan especial y acogedor que invitaba a quedarse para siempre, pero lamentablemente había que coger de nuevo el ferry para volver a Fuerteventura.

 

El Restaurante Antoñito el Farero

Como comentaba, si queréis comer en Lobos solo hay dos opciones: traerse comida de casa y hacer pic-nic o reservar mesa en Antoñito el Farero, en el Puertito (928879653). Se trata de un restaurante sencillo y humilde en el que tan solo se sirve pescado fresco del día (cuando fuimos nosotros, vieja frita canaria) y paella. Según dicen, solo hacen dos turnos y para reservar tendréis que apuntaros yendo allí tras bajar del ferry. Nosotros estuvimos fuera a la hora de la comida y vimos que había gente que pedía comida y la sacaba para comer en el puerto junto al mar. Los precios son super económicos y eso que es el único sitio de la isla… pensamos que en cualquier otro lugar del Mundo se hubiesen aprovechado de este privilegio para hacer negocio con el cliente, pero es solo otro rasgo del carácter tan acogedor, cercano y especial de este lugar y de sus gentes. Sin duda, la próxima vez reservaremos!

 

Es increíble cómo 6 kms2 pueden llegar tanto al corazón… si estáis pensando en visitar próximamente Fuerteventura no dudéis ni un solo segundo en conocerlos!!

One of my favorite places in Fuerteventura is an islet located very close to Corralejo, a little over 2 kms. north of the island, and we had the privilege of seeing each morning when we got up from our terrace, Isla de Lobos.

This small island of about 6 km2 is a perfect excursion to spend a day, but also has a camping area and we saw a small fishing village with houses in which we saw some families and tourists staying in Puertito de Lobos. Its curious name comes from monk seals or sea lions that once lived in the area forming a colony. Several beaches, a lighthouse, a restaurant, an Interpretation Center, a tourist information booth, a volcano, a path to explore the island and the charming Puertito de Lobos are the main landmarks that await us once we arrive by ferry.

 

Taking the Ferry from Corralejo

Every day the Lobos Express Ferry leaves from Corralejo at 10am, 11am, 12am, 1pm, 3:30 pm, 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm and in just 15 minutes it goes through what is known as El Rio (an arm of the sea that separates both zones) and you Leave at the port near the Calera Beach. The price per adult round trip is € 15 and the return times from Lobos are: 11: 15h, 12: 15h, 14h, 16h, 17h and 18h. We decided to go on the 11 o’clock and return at 5 o’clock, but if you think hiking, we recommend taking the 10 o’clock and returning at 6 o’clock.

 

The circular path that runs through the island

In two or three hours it is possible to see the whole island thanks to a path that runs from end to end easily accessible for all levels. Although it is possible to do it in flip flops, I recommend you take some slippers (not too new, so as not to spoil them) and then change on the beaches. It can also be done by bike (we saw that many people brought it from Corralejo on the ferry), but since we were in December and the heat was quite bearable, we decided to walk.

Just off the ferry we found two routes, both ended at the lighthouse, the northernmost point of the island. We chose the one on the left because we wanted to finish at the Puertito and have a good time there before returning to Corralejo, but many people take the opposite way because to eat at the only restaurant on the islet it is necessary to book before the 11 o’clock in the morning

Taking our way we arrive in a moment to Calera Beach/ Concha Beach in about 3,5 kms. We ended up in the Martiño Lighthouse, crossing the Malpais, an area of ​​the interior that is sandy and volcanic, being able to climb on the way to the Volcano of La Calera, from which we enjoyed unique views of the surroundings. From there we continued to the charming Puertito de Lobos and returned to take the ferry back. But if you choose the one on the right, you can do the opposite way starting with Puertito de Lobos.

So you can get an idea of ​​times, from the place where you leave the ferry to La Calera or La Concha beach taking the left path there are about 7-10 mins., then to the Caldera Mountain in about 50 mins and another 40 mins. until the lighthouse. And on the right path, you get to Puertito in about 7-10 mins., Another 20 mins. to Las Lagunillas and 50 mins. more until the lighthouse.

 

Calera Beach or La Concha Beach

This impressive corner hides an immovable water that seems almost a lagoon with crystal clear waters and a sepulchral silence that makes it a particularly relaxing and almost mystical place. When we arrived, there were barely four people in it, we could take a «corralito majorero» or semicircle formed by stones to protect you from the wind (although that day there was hardly), but it seemed perfect to set up our little environment and enjoy that magical environment. I do not know if during the day it would be full of people, but the time we had was practically for us alone. On the beach we saw old Roman archaeological remains protected by a fence, and it is said that in the past in this area dyes were made from the processing of marine mollusks.

 

The Volcano or Mountain of the Caldera

The next stop after a dip in the calm waters of Playa de la Concha is the Montaña de la Caldera, an old volcano about 100 meters high (the highest point of the islet) which I recommend you climb if you want to enjoy some Incredible views of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. To get there, you have to walk about 700 meters from the beach and from there take a path to a detour that takes a bit of slope and slope until you reach the top where the viewpoint is, ideal to stop and take photos and rest a bit before starting the descent and continue the walk.

 

The Martiño Lighthouse

If we follow the path to the north of the island, we pass through the Llano de Los Labrantes, where the Portuguese builders of the lighthouse lived, where remains of their homes are still being found, along the Morro de Las Pilas and Morro Escarchado, the Morro Colorado, and at the end we climbed the Martiño mountain until we reach the lighthouse. The lighthouse, built with stones of basalt and lime, is at a height of about 29 meters above the sea and its last owner, Antoñito the lighthouse keeper, was one of the best known characters of the island for offering broth or help to visitors of Lobos and for founding the only restaurant that exists today on the island.

 

The Lagunillas or Lagunitas

The return from the lighthouse is made parallel to the sea by somewhat arid roads and passes through Las Lagunillas, a bay where a kind of estuary or pretty natural pools form in which you can also see the everlasting feature of the islet of Wolves. It is a super quiet place and perfect to make a stop on the way to regain strength or rest a little bit of the walk.

Puertito of Lobos

When we started to see a small town on the way we knew that we had reached the one that immediately became my favorite place in Lobos, El Puertito. As soon as we arrived and saw their fishing houses (some even dug into the rock), the color of the water, the atmosphere animated by the hustle and bustle of the restaurant and the small wooden jetty, we fell madly in love with that place. The sea was simply unreal, so calm that it looks like an infinite pool, and the white sand bottoms dotted with dark rocks encouraged us to snorkel for a while. We had brought food from home and we stopped to eat right next to the restaurant, where we bought the drink, with one of the best views we have ever had. But the best thing was to start a conversation with one of the fishermen who gave kindly to visitors who had no place in the restaurant for their table to ask for food and take it there, who told us that at that time he was going to dive to get some What another octopus. We spent a couple of hours enjoying that special and cozy corner that invited us to stay forever, but unfortunately we had to take the ferry again to return to Fuerteventura.

 

Antoñito el Farero Restaurant

As I said, if you want to eat at Lobos there are only two options: bring food from home and make a picnic or book a table at Antoñito el Farero, in El Puertito (928879653). It is a simple and humble restaurant in which only fresh fish of the day is served (when it was us, fried Canarian vieja) and paella. As they say, they only make two shifts and to book you will have to sign up by going there after getting off the ferry. We were outside at lunch time and we saw that there were people who asked for food and took it out to eat in the port by the sea. The prices are super cheap and that is the only place on the island … we think that anywhere else in the world would have taken advantage of this privilege to do business with the client, but it is just another feature of the character so cozy, close and special about this place and its people. Without a doubt, next time we will book!

 

It’s amazing how 6 km2 can reach both the heart … if you are thinking of visiting Fuerteventura soon, do not hesitate a second to know this amazing place!
