…¿Cómo no te he conocido antes?
Me pregunto cómo he podido estar tanto tiempo sin descubrir esta ciudad. Oporto esconde grandes historias tras edificios desvencijados y alberga un encanto decadente, melancólico, vintage, que te atrapa y te envuelve. Mientras caminas por sus callejuelas o subes y bajas sus pronunciadas cuestas te preguntas cuántas vidas ha vivido, cuántas memorias ha acumulado. Y cuando charlas con los portuenses sientes que te dan la bienvenida sin excepciones, con un afecto especial. Quizá por ello sea un lugar cada vez más visitado por gente de todas las procedencias y se haya convertido en un destino de moda en el que lo desvencijado y lo moderno se fusionan de una manera especial, dando como resultado un lugar en el que vivir experiencias únicas y llenarte de recuerdos… lo que me aporta de verdad viajar.
Otra de las cosas que destacaría de esta ciudad es su fotogenia. No sé cuántas fachadas he fotografiado, cuántos azulejos, puertas y balcones, cuántas perspectivas de la Ribeira… su luz es especial y cada rincón, a cuál más añejo o decrépito, es más arrebatador. Así que estoy muy orgullosa de poder llenar este post de algunas imágenes preciosas que pude tomar con mi nueva compañera de viaje, una réflex de segunda mano (muy a nivel amateur 😜)
Con este prólogo entenderéis que me va a resultar difícil tratar de plasmar todo lo que Oporto me ha transmitido sin alargarme demasiado… intentaré resumirlo todo lo que pueda para no resultar demasiado pesada 😅
Antes de empezar, me gustaría hablar de cómo llegamos desde el aeropuerto. Nuestro alojamiento estaba en el centro antiguo, cerca de la Ribeira (por cierto, una zona con muchísimo encanto) y decidimos llegar con los buses de Terravisión/ GoIn. No puedo estar más contenta con el servicio que nos dieron, nos recogieron en el aeropuerto a la hora prevista, íbamos solos en el microbús, y en unos 20 minutos nos dejaban en pleno centro de la ciudad, eligiendo entre la zona de Boavista y Aliados. Además te preguntan por tu hotel y, si es accesible (algunas calles son peatonales y otras directamente imposibles para el tráfico) incluso te dejan en la puerta. Y la vuelta al aeropuerto exactamente igual. Nosotros ya lo llevábamos cogido desde Madrid por lo que fue comodísimo: les das el voucher y listo! Y todo por 9€ por persona ida y vuelta. El Oporto Antiguo
El corazón de la ciudad es relativamente pequeño y es fácil verlo caminando. Eso si, preparaos para las cuestas que son muchas y empinadas! Para resumir un poco los “must to see“ del centro de la ciudad:
En Baixa podemos tomar la Avenida dos Aliados como punto de partida. Es un amplio paseo repleto edificios elegantes y cadenas de comida rápida con el impresionante edificio del Ayuntamiento de Porto. Entre sus edificios encontramos también el que dicen que es el McDonald’s más bonito del mundo, un antiguo café al que siguen acudiendo las señoras portuenses a tomar su cafecito por las tardes.
Si cogemos esta Avenida hacia el Este, tenemos la zona de Bolhão, con su tradicional mercado popular y la calle de Santa Caterina, la gran calle comercial llena de tiendas ideal para una mañana de compras. En esta calle está la famosa Capela Das Almas con sus preciosos azulejos azules.
El Mercado de Bolhão sería para mí uno de los imprescindibles del viaje: en él pasamos muy buenos ratos mezclándonos con los portugueses y alternando en sus puestos, salpicados de pequeños bares donde poder tomar algo. Se cae literalmente a trozos y es uno de los máximos ejemplos de la decadencia de esta ciudad, pero al mismo tiempo es de lo más auténtico y está lleno de historia. Os recomiendo muy mucho tomar un vinho verde o hacer una pequeña cata de Porto en el puestecito de vinos en el que por muy poco dinero degustaréis los mejores de la zona (recomendados por su simpático dueño) junto a unas tapas portuenses, pudiendo elegir entre queso – queijo, jamón – pressunto o salpicón.
Justo al lado del mercado, en la misma calle Formosa, tenéis las famosas e hiper-fotografiadas tiendas antiguas Comer e Chorar por Mais y A Perola de Bolhão, una enfrente de la otra, a cual más cuqui
Tomando la Avenida Aliados a mano izquierda, tenemos la zona de Galeria de París, my animada por la tarde noche para tomar algo, y más arriba (subiendo una cuesta interesante), llegamos a la Praça de Carlos Alberto, otro punto para mí imperdible en la ciudad. Esta plaza tiene muchísima vida y me parece preciosa, ideal para sentarse en cualquiera de sus terracitas y tomar un café (por ejemplo en el café Moustache, uno de nuestros preferidos). Los Sábados desde las 11 de la mañana hasta las 19h tienen un mercado llamado Portobelo, y también veréis por la zona varias tiendas de ropa, accesorios y objetos antiguos.
Al sur del barrio de Baixa encontramos la zona monumental de Oporto, un área declarada Patrimonio de la Humnidad por la UNESCO en 1996 que comprende la antigua ciudad amurallada, además del puente de Dom Luis y el Monasterio da Serra do Pilar, al otro lado del Duero. Esta llena de calles estrechas y empinadas y es una zona con mucha magia. Aquí se concentran muchos puntos de interés para visitar:
La Plaza de Clérigos, llamada así por su torre de origen medieval con unas vistas privilegiadas de Oporto (eso sí, siempre que subáis sus más de 200 escalones y paguéis una entrada de 4€). La subida es durilla y se hace a través de estrechos pasadizos, y en horas puntas puede generarse tanto “atasco“ de personas que hasta existe un semáforo!! Esta plaza es hoy el punto neurálgico de Oporto, la zona de moda para salir a cenar y de copas, está llena de bares, terrazas, restaurantes y tiendas trendy.
Justo enfrente de esta plaza está una de las librerías más bonitas del mundo, la librería Lello & Irmão. Se cuenta que fue una fuente de inspiración para la autora de Harry Potter y las colas para entrar son gigantes, pero la entrada (4€) merece la pena por la impresionante escalera en la que todos quieren hacerse la foto.
La Estación de Sao Bento, estación de ferrocarriles, es un lugar increíble que recuerda a otra época y en ella destaca la entrada completamente revestida de azulejos, muy bonita de ver.
Frente a la estación comienza una de las calles más bonitas de Oporto y una de mis preferidas, la Rua das Flores, una calle peatonal llena de edificios de fachadas coloridas y llenas de azulejos, en la que hay cientos de tiendas, restaurantes y terracitas. Es muy característica por lo bien que se está adaptando a los tiempos y uno de los ejemplos más claros de la renovación de la ciudad.
Cerca de esta calle encontramos la Catedral o Sé, con su famoso claustro de azulejos azules y el Pelouriño, una columna rizada donde se impartía la justicia en época feudal. Desde aquí, además, tenemos más vistas increíbles.
El Oporto ribereño
Una de las zonas más animadas – que además era la zona en la que nos alojamos– es la Ribeira, para mí otra de las zonas más emblemáticas de Oporto. En ella está el famoso Muro dos Bacalhoeiros y la plaza Ribeira con sus fachadas de colores de las que me enamoré completamente, y es ideal para pasear a cualquier hora del día aunque tiene un encanto mayor al atardecer. Frente a ella tenemos las vistas de Vilanova de Gaia y de las bodegas, a las que se puede cruzar andando por el puente, en barco o en teleférico. En el paseo por la Ribeira vais a ver varios de los restaurantes de pescado más reputados de la ciudad, como el Fish Fixe o Chez Lapin, en los que podemos cenar con unas vistas impresionantes del puente y con una panorámica completa de Vilanova de Gaia.
- Ponte Dom Luis I: cruzar el puente en su segundo piso (el más alto) es uno de los momentazos que he tenido en este viaje. Poder ver Oporto desde las alturas y cruzar el río con esas vistas fue emocionante y espectacular. Así que no os lo penséis y subid desde la Estación de Sao Bento por la Avenida Vimara Peres para cogerlo desde el extremo de Oporto y cruzadlo hasta Vilanova de Gaia.
- Elevador da Ribeira. es un ascensor gratuito desde el cual se obtienen unas vistas preciosas de Oporto, del Duero y de toda la zona de alrededor. Como no es fácil de encontrar, el truco es mirar hacia arriba para localizarlo.
- Armazem: Caminando por Ribeira por la Alfândega, buscad este lugar frente al Museu dos Transportes e Comunicaçoes. Además de hacer exposiciones y conciertos, es ideal para tomar algo rodeados de objetos antiguos y puestecillos.
- Jardins do Palácio de Cristal: sobre la Ribeira, es un espectacular jardín botánico con muy buenas vistas ideales para dar un paseo por la mañana en el que se puede pasear rodeado de pavos reales. Dicen que es uno de los lugares más románticos de Oporto y doy fe de ello.
- Vilanova de Gaia y las Bodegas: frente a la Ribeira, cruzando el río, este lugar es ideal para dar un paseo con la mejor vista de Oporto, y para visitar alguna de sus bodegas. Sandeman, Taylor’s o Graham’s son de las más famosas y en ellas se hacen degustaciones del famoso vino de Porto, una denominación de origen de vino exclusiva del Valle del Duero portugués. Algunos tours incluyen un paseo por el Duero en rabelo para ver sus seis puentes y la visita a alguna de estas bodegas. En Gaia, también visitamos el Mercado da Beira Rio, con muchos puestecitos para comer y tomar algo, y otra de las visitas obligadas es el hotel The Yeatman, el primer hotel consagrado al vino de la zona y con el “Dick’s Bar” para degustar un buen oporto a la caída de la tarde. Además, también tiene muy buenas vistas de la ciudad.
- Afurada: cruzando el Duero a bordo de un vetusto barco de madera que sale de Cais do Ouro, cerca del Ponte da Arrábida, llegamos a un pequeño pueblo que parece de otra época y en la que no existe el estrés y el ajetreo del centro. Es un pueblecito de pescadores donde las mujeres todavía hacen la colada en los lavaderos de piedra públicos. La alternativa menos turística y sin embargo más auténtica de Oporto.
El Oporto Bohemio
Y para terminar con la visita a la ciudad, el barrio de Miguel Bombarda representaría el lado más bohemio y alternativo de Oporto. En él se concentran numerosas galerías de arte, algunos cafés, tiendas de curiosidades y discos y boutiques de diseñadores locales. Se encuentra en la zona alta (y plana!) de Oporto y está lleno de graffittis en las calles y casas bajas con jardines en su parte trasera. Para ver este barrio, es imprescindible pasarse por la galería de arte Ap’arte, por el Centro Comercial Bombarda con tiendas de marcas de culto portuguesas como Storytaylors, echar un vistazo a la Pensión Favorita, el Gallery Hostel o el bonito hotel Mercador.
Un poco más abajo, tenemos las Galerías Lumière con sus tiendecitas (como la tienda Coraçao Alecrim), bares e incluso el restaurante japonés más pequeño del mundo. Y para terminar el paseo por el barrio, podemos visitar Ó! Galeria para descubrir el mundo de la Ilustración terminar tomando un té en Rota do Chá, lugar de culto en el que ofrecen más de 300 variedades de té!
Comer y salir por Oporto
Si hay algo que nos llamó especialmente la atención fueron las mil y una opciones de restauración de la ciudad. Oporto está lleno de pequeños restaurantes acogedores e íntimos en los que pasar ratos inolvidables alrededor de la mesa. La contrapartida es que, en las horas punta de la comida y de la cena, se abarrotan enseguida de gente por lo que es más que recomendable reservar.
La oferta culinaria es amplia, yendo desde los sencillos sandes o tostas (sándwiches rápidos ideales para un día de turisteo) hasta la cocina más casera y tradicional, pasando por las francesinhas (el famosísimo bocadillo de pan de molde relleno de embutido y carne, recubierto con lonchas de queso que es gratinado y bañada en una salsa picante hecha a partir de cerveza y tomate), las tripas a la moda do Porto (las favoritas de los tripeiros al mediodía y bastante parecidas a los callos ), los pregos y bifanas (típicos bocadillos porteases, el primero de ternera y el segundo de tiras de cerdo con salsa), el pescado fresco y el marisco… en cualquier cafetería puedes picar algo de comer y también en los restaurantes triunfan las tabuas o tablas de queso y embutido para compartir. Y para beber, tenemos desde la cerveza local Superbock hasta el refrescante vinho verde, los dulces vinos de Porto o incluso el cocktail Porto Tonic (1/3 de porto blanco + 2/3 de tónica). Además los precios son bastante asequibles, así que mi lista de recomendaciones esta vez es bastante extensa, pero de verdad que me cuesta mucho reducir cuando todos los sitios que visitamos me gustaron tanto!! Aquí van mis sitios preferidos para comer y salir en Oporto:
1. Cantina 32. Rua das Flores, 32
Bonito, íntimo, detallista, acogedor y con una carta deliciosa… Cantina 32 es uno de los grandes descubrimientos del viaje. Es tan chulo que no me extraña que sea uno de los sitios de moda y si decidís visitarlo (que hay que hacerlo) es imprescindible reservar por teléfono con varios días de antelación. El local está decorado con aire industrial pero al mismo tiempo muy cálido y aunque las raciones no son de las más abundantes para mí es una ventaja porque te deja sitio para su postre estrella: el cheescake, que sirven en una maceta asemejando un tiesto de tierra. Otro de los platos deliciosos de la carta son las croquetas de alheira com mocho de miel e mostarda. Pero si os apetece probar un poco de todo, pedid la «seleção de tudo e mais alguma coisa» (una tabla de quesos, embutidos, salmón, queso y mermeladas) y compartid los segundos. Precio medio, y una experiencia para recordar.
2. Tábua Rasa, Rua da Picaria 68
En Tábua Rasa todos los productos y materias primas son 100% portugueses e incluso puedes adquirirlos en el mismo local, un local pequeño revestido de madera clara y con iluminación tenue en el que apetece alargar las horas y estirar la sobremesa. Los camareros te explican todos los platos al detalle y te hacen recomendaciones bastante interesantes, y lo ideal (aunque no solo hay tablas) es degustar sus tábuas, disponibles en diferentes tamaños, de quesos y embutidos. Muy recomendable su propio vino, delicioso! Y la cuenta final bastante asequible para lo bueno que estaba todo y lo que disfrutamos!
3. A Sandeira, Rua dos Caldeireiros 85
Cuando un negocio pequeño y local está siempre abarrotado de gente y hay cola para entrar, es señal de que algo bueno tiene dentro. Y esto es lo que sucede en A Sandeira, un sitio especializado en sándwiches con recetas deliciosas y originales, pero que también tiene un económico menú del día por tan solo 5€ que incluye sopa + sandwich o ensalada + bebida . Todo esto le hace ocupar el puesto 3 de la lista como alternativa perfecta para un almuerzo rápido entre visita y vista a los puntos clave de la ciudad. Mi preferido? el sandwich Sao Bento, por 4,90€, con tomate, queso brie y aguacate… mmmmm!!!
4. Porta 4, Rua Barbosa de Castro 4
¿Un restaurante con tan solo cuatro mesas? Este gastropub sirve tapas y vinos a tan solo un máximo de 10 personas, con opciones para veganos y vegetarianos. Ideal para los amantes de los ambientes bohemios y con personalidad, este lugar es único, familiar, entrañable, y respira encanto por todos los costados. No solo las tapas de autor son espectaculares, también el vino es digno de mención… los camareros son muy simpáticos y hacen buenísimas recomendaciones, además en todo momento tendrás a la vista a los cocineros preparando con todo su esmero los platos. ¿Se necesitan más motivos para visitarlo? 😉
5. Rota do Chá, Rua Miguel Bombarda 457
Creo que Rota do Chá es uno de esos lugares de obligada visita en Oporto y en él se mezclan conceptos con mucho encanto: restaurante, tetería y tienda. Ofrece una carta de más de 300 tés y se distribuye en tres plantas con diferentes ambientes coloniales que se mueven entre el diseño portugués y el asiático. Lo mejor es su jardín, super detallista e ideal para pasar el tiempo leyendo un buen libro. Además, los Viernes, ofrecen la posibilidad de canjear un libro viejo por una taza de té. Un lugar con mucha magia y carisma ineludible en la zona de Bombarda.
6. Raiz, Largo dos Lóios 8
Más céntrico imposible, Raíz es un restaurante pequeñito con vistas privilegiadas a la Torre de los Clérigos en el que el ambiente es cálido, la música de fondo suave, la iluminación corre a cargo de las velas y los platos además de originales y bien presentados están deliciosos. Es difícil elegir: la carne y las hamburguesas son espectaculares, el pulpo, el bacalao… Como siempre, hay que reservar, pero merece la pena.
7. Galerias de Paris, Rua Galeria de Paris 67
En la Rua Galería de París, una calle preciosa que te traslada a Flandes, está este restaurante-bar, un lugar un tanto peculiar lleno de objetos antiguos que es ideal para tomar unas tapas por la noche. Aquí sirven los famosos peixinhos da horta, y el ambiente es animado y muy característico. También se puede parar a tomar café o algún cocktail a la caída de la tarde, con la ventaja de estar en una de las calles de marcha más bonitas y vivas de la ciudad.
8. La Champanheria da Baixa, Rua da Picaria 107
Este lounge-bar bohemio y cálido me parece ideal para tomar algo en un ambiente cómodo e intimista y alejarse del ruido y de la fiesta. Además de cavas y espumosos, también se pueden tomar vinos y acompañar todo con unas tapas, por lo que también es una opción para una cena ligera o para antes de cenar.
9. Ora Viva (Rua da Fonte Taurina 83) o Chez Lapin (Rua dos Canastreiros 40-42)
Para no rayar en lo más típico, que sería el famoso Fish Fixe, unifico estas dos alternativas porque son dos opciones estupendas para degustar platos tradicionales (especialmente bacalhau) y pescado. En Ora Viva presumen de tener el mejor bacalhau de la ciudad y probablemente sea cierto, es un restaurante en una callejuela tras la Ribeira bastante bueno y con unos precios alucinantes. Chez Lapin sería la versión elegante, justo en la orilla de la Ribeira y con precios algo más elevados.
10. As 7 Maravilhas, Rua das Taipas 17
As 7 Maravilhas es un sitio que te recomiendan los locales por su autenticidad, y aunque por fuera pueda resultar un tanto destartalado la verdad es que es oculta en su interior un ambiente muy agradable y unas tapas deliciosas tanto portuguesas como internacionales que además pueden acompañarse de cerveza artesana local. Abren solo por las tardes excepto los fines de semana que empiezan a las 13h (lo digo sobre todo para que no os subáis la cuesta y os encontréis con las puertas cerradas!)
11. O Caraças, Rua das Taipas 27
Muy básico y sencillo, pero al mismo tiempo super casero y tradicional, este restaurante pasa totalmente desapercibido porque no tiene ni siquiera letrero, pero justo a la entrada aparece una pizarra en la que se muestran los únicos dos platos del día. En O Caraças no hay carta ni precios, solo puedes elegir entre estos dos platos pero son espectaculares: al estilo tradicional, copiosos y deliciosos, y a un precio de risa (se puede comer por 15€ dos personas, bebida y postres incluidos) Ideal para degustar la auténtica cocina portuguesa.
12. DeGema (Rua Do Almada 253) y Munchie (Praça D. Filipa de Lencastre, 183)
Son dos locales de comida más o menos rápida idóneos para los más hamburgueseros donde las hamburguesas son espectaculares: servidas con patatas caseras y con una carne espectacular. Ambos tienen una gran fama y están siempre abarrotados, pero mientras se espera también puedes pasar el rato tomando una cerveza artesana. Todo por precios muy ajustados que difícilmente pasan de los 10€ por persona.
13. Amarelo Torrada (Rua José Falcão 29) y Pé de Cabra (Passeio de Sao Lazaro 5)
Estas dos cafeterías las recomiendo especialmente en la hora del desayuno. En Amarelo Torrada presumen de hacer la mejor torrada o tostada de Oporto y la verdad es que está deliciosa! La sirven junto a mermelada casera de naranja, calabaza y fresa y puedes elegir el tipo de pan. Un consejo, pedid solo 1/2 torrada si no queréis salir rodando de allí! Y en Dama Pé de Cabra podréis daros un homenaje con sus copiosos desayunos y brunchs, con los que cargar pilas a tope para el resto de la jornada.
14. Pimenta Rosa, Rua Miguel Bombarda 22
En el barrio bohemio y alternativo de Oporto, el Pimenta Rosa ofrece un buffet de comida orgánica buenísima con platos de quinoa, cous cous, quiches de verduras, ensaladas frías de legumbres… en el que por unos 7-8 € por persona comes de manera sana y deliciosa. Si estáis dando una vuelta por este barrio, pasad a probarlo.
15. O Cometa, Rua de Tomás Gonzaga 87
Este restaurante es 100% recomendable para una cena íntima. Aunque cuesta un poco encontrarlo – está semi escondido-, merece mucho la pena encontrado porque dentro os vais a sentir como en casa: es muy íntimo, pequeño, cómodo y cálido, y la comida es muy rica y acompaña bien el momento.
16. Base, Passeio dos Clérigos
Si tenéis la suerte de visitar Oporto con un estupendo día de sol, una de las alternativas más recomendables es parar en Base, un restaurante en el que lo más destacable es su agradable terraza de hierba al aire libre con las vistas de la Torre de los Clérigos de fondo.
17. Flow Restaurant & Bar, Rua da Conceição 63
Flow es uno de esos sitios que te encantan y te entran por los ojos, a mí me parece precioso. Como la gran mayoría de los restaurantes de la ciudad, de nuevo es imprescindible reservar. Aunque no sea de los más baratos teniendo en cuenta la media de precios de Oporto, por unos 30€ por persona tendréis una experiencia bastante interesante en la que se mezcla un restaurante muy moderno con productos de calidad y raciones generosas.
18. Book (Rua de Aviz 10) y Casa do Livro (Galeria de Paris 85)
La cosa va de libros! Book es un restaurante original por el hecho de que comeréis rodeados de estanterías repletas de libros, pero que yo también recomendaría especialmente para la hora de antes de cenar por ser un sitio super chic con buena música y deliciosos cocktails, no en vano se ha convertido en una especie de lugar de moda de la movida de Oporto. Si vais, pedid su famosa caipirinha con clavo y canela. Y Casa do Livro es un pub o bar de copas muy animado de la noche portuense en el que se conserva la esencia de la antigua librería que fue en el pasado.
19. Cantinho do Avillez (R. Mouzinho Silveira 166) y D.O.P. (Largo São Domingos 18)
Y para los que busquen algo más elaborado y sofisticado, estos dos restaurantes son ya palabras mayores. Cantinho do Avillez es un lugar en el que los viajes inspiran los platos y la decoración es sencilla y distendida. Su chef José Avilez trabaja en platos al mismo tiempo sofisticados y sencillos, como la portugesinha o empanada de cocido portugués o los pescaditos de la huerta con salsa tártara. D.O.P. es un restaurante con una estrella Michelín en el que disfrutar de una experiencia gastronómica de calidad en el que el chef Rui Paula ofrece una cocina creativa con raíces portuguesas en la que destacan platos como las patatas rellenas de salmón o el bacalhau a 55 grados. El precio medio en ambos es de unos 50€ por persona.
20. Bar Ponte Pensil, Rua de Cima do Muro 14
Si tuviese que escoger un lugar ideal para tomar una copa de oporto al atardecer, seguramente sería el Bar Ponte Pensil, con una ubicación inmejorable sobre el Río Duero y pegado al Puente Dom Luis I. Lo recomiendo por su terraza es privilegiada y porque solo por las vistas merece la pena aunque sea tomarse un café, pero por lo demás no esperéis demasiado, el servicio es justito y tampoco merece demasiado la pena para ir a comer.
21. Majestic Cafe, Rua Santa Catarina 112
No podía terminar la lista sin mencionarlo, ya que ir a Oporto y no visitar el Café Majestic es como una visita incompleta. Este histórico y elegante café en plena calle comercial Rua Santa Catarina es una especie de icono en la ciudad. Suntuoso y elegante, te traslada a la Belle Epoque en segundos por su estilo art-decó y más allá de poder entrar a contemplarlo no os diría que os quedaseis mucho más que para tomar un café y admirar su belleza…
De tiendas por Oporto
Pero no solo de comida consta Oporto… en los paseos y caminatas por la ciudad os vais a encontrar tiendecitas curiosas e interesantes que seguro que os van a hacer parar y echar un vistazo a los escaparates. Estas son las que más me gustaron:
- A vida portuguesa, la famosísima tienda local que ha rescatado del olvido a tantos productos tradicionales de Portugal, está muy próxima a la Livraria Lello & Irmão en la Rua da Galeria de Paris 20. En ella hay de todo: desde carteles antiguos hasta juguetes de madera, imanes, muebles auxiliares.. además de una escalera también fotogénica y característica.
- Casa Almada, si os gusta el interiorismo aquí encontrareis muebles vintage y piezas de diseño muy bien conservadas. En Rua do Almada 544.
- A Perola de Bolhão y Comer e Chorar por Mais, ya os las he comentado un poco más adelante pero me encantan por ser los típicos colmados de toda la vida en los que adquirir quesos, embutidos, vinos o conservas típicas. Ambas en Rua Formosa.
- Violet&Ginger, una tienda preciosa con ropa, accesorios, bisutería, artículos de decoración y libros en el Largo São Domingos 99.
- Patch Porto, en el barrio Miguel de Bombarda, tiene cosas inesperadas en la primera planta y ropa vintage en la planta inferior. En Rua do Rosario, 193.
- Taken, al principio de la calle comercial Rua Santa Catarina, es una tienda preciosa con moda urbana que merece la pena visitar.
- Lobo Taste y Hats and Cats, ambas de los mismos dueños, donde todo lo que venden está hecho a mano en Portugal. En Largo São Domingos 20 y Rua do Infante D. Henrique 117.
- Coração Alecrim es una tienda vintage con cerámica, ropa y complementos en la que además se puede cenar. En Travesia de Cedofeita 28, cerca de la Praça de Carlos Alberto.
Dormir en Oporto
Estoy muy contenta con el alojamiento que escogimos durante nuestra visita a Oporto, un Guest House pequeño y precioso al lado de la Ribeira llamado Ribereidge Guest House: habitación abuhardillada con una luz preciosa y una decoración moderna pero cálida, un desayuno delicioso y unos anfitriones encantadores unidos a una ubicación perfecta, hacen que sea una opción ideal por 80€ la noche, desayuno incluido.
Pero estuvimos dudando bastante entre éste y los siguientes alojamientos que también nos gustaban y que os dejo aquí por si os pueden ser útiles de cara a planificar vuestro viaje:
Gallery Hostel: Este hostal con muy buenos precios y una ubicación excelente en el barrio bohemio o barrio de las Artes es un lugar con una decoración impresionante, habitaciones cuidadas y limpias y espacios comunes siempre animados con actividades culturales. En su fachada, los típicos azulejos portugueses, y además tiene un jardín precioso. Si no queréis alojaros, podéis ir a cenar a su restaurante en el que por solo unos 10€ podréis comer bien y disfrutar de la amabilidad de su personal. En Rua Miguel Bombarda 222, precios desde 55€ la noche.
Porto A.S. 1829 es un hotel precioso situado justo al lado de la Rua das Flores ubicado en un edificio histórico en el que todas las habitaciones tienen vistas. Es un establecimiento moderno y decorado con muchísimo gusto, aunque el principal inconveniente es que no incluye el desayuno y si lo solicitas lleva un suplemento . Está en Largo São Domingos 45-55 y su precio es de 78€ la noche (sin desayuno)
El 1872 River House es un alojamiento excepcional situado en un precioso edificio rosa y está ubicado en un sito único en la Ribeira. Es más caro (unos 150€ si pides habitaciones con vistas al río ,que son las mejores) pero si vuestro viaje es especial o podéis permitíroslo merece mucho la pena. En Rua do Infante D. Henrique 133.
Estuvimos valorando el Flores Village Hotel & Spa, en plena Rua das Flores 139, un hotel boutique muy bonito y con mucho encanto que tiene un jardín panorámico y una azotea con muy buenas vistas de la ciudad . Muy céntrico y de gran calidad. Precio: 144€
Y finalmente, el Pestana Vintage Porto es uno de esos hoteles maravillosos en los que cuidan hasta el mínimo detalle para que tu estancia sea inolvidable. Está justo a la orilla del río y su desayuno en la terraza con las vistas es lo más. Está en Praça da Ribeira 1 y su precio por noche es de unos 140€.
…Y descubrir los alrededores
Aunque el centro de Oporto es bastante manejable y se ve en un par de días, sus alrededores son también increíbles y, si el tiempo os lo permite, merecen de sobra una visita. Algunos de los sitios más recomendables serían:
Las Piscinas das Mares: uno de los secretos mejor guardados de Oporto y una obra arquitectónica digna de ver junto al mar, en perfecta armonía con el entorno. Aunque el agua está helada, los más valientes pueden animarse a darse un chapuzón. Están a unos 30 minutos de Oporto, en Leça da Palmeira.
Foz: a Foz se puede llegar pedaleando en bici desde Oporto, y al llegar veremos como el Duero desemboca en el Atlántico. Además, Foz tiene un bonito casco antiguo y restaurantes muy chulos como Pedro Lemos , Cafeína o Praia da Luz. Y junto a la playa, un lugar en el que se dice que están los mejores bolos de reis y pasteis de nata: Tavi.
Praia do Aterro y Praia do Molhe: la primera es espectacular, larga y con una arena fina que invita a pasar el día tumbado. En ella también se encuentra los famosos restaurantes L´Kodac y Terminal 4450 . La segunda, más pequeña y con algunas zonas rocosas, es más acogedora y recogida.
Aveiro y Costa Nova: también accesible a través de excursiones desde Oporto incluyendo un crucero en Moliceiro, Aveiro está a solo 1h de distancia y es una localidad que respira encanto portugués. Su costa, Costa Nova, está a unos 10-12 kms. y es conocida por sus pintorescas casitas de colores, antiguamente ocupadas por los pescadores y llamadas “palheiros“ que hoy en día acogen bares, heladerías o casas particulares.
Dicen que Guimarães es una de las zonas más bonitas y se encuentra a unos 50 kms. de Oporto. Esta ciudad histórica puede visitarse cogiendo el tren en la estación de Sao Bento en un trayecto de 1h aproximadamente y vale la pena para disfrutar de su centro histórico con las bonitas plazas interconectarlas entre sí, el Palacio Ducal y subir a la Montaña da Penha usando el teleférico.
Situado en el corazón del Oporto, Pinhão está situado en un meandro precioso del Douro y cuenta con un mirador que se encuentra entre los 7 con las mejores vistas de Europa con una panorámica espectacular del Valle. Rodeado de viñedos y de laderas escalonadas donde se elaboran algunos de los mejores oportos, está lleno de bodegas y permite remontar el río desde el muelle de Folgosa do Douro hasta el corazón del Alto Douro, a bordo de un barco vinatero tradicional de fondo plano con Douro-a-Vela.
Terminamos como siempre con algunas sugerencias para la maleta… en este caso además de chequear bien el tiempo (a nosotros nos hizo un tiempo de verano en pleno Octubre), lo fundamental es llevar el calzado más cómodo que tengáis para poder subir mejor las cuestas imposibles de la ciudad… 😉

I wonder how I have been able to stay so long without discovering this city. Porto hides great stories after rickety buildings and houses a decadent, melancholy, vintage charm that catches you and envelops you. As you walk down its narrow streets or climb up and down steep slopes you wonder how many lives you have lived, how many memories you have accumulated. And when you talk to the people of Porto you feel welcomed without exceptions, with a special affection. Perhaps this is why it is a place more and more visited by people of all backgrounds and has become a fashion destination in which the rickety and modern are merged in a special way, resulting in a place in which to live experiences unique and fill you with memories … what I really do travel.
Another of the highlights of this city is its photogeny. I do not know how many facades I have photographed, how many tiles, doors and balconies, how many perspectives of the Ribeira … its light is special and every corner, which is more añejo or decrepit, is more breathtaking. So I am very proud to be able to fill this post with some lovely pictures that I could take with my new travel companion, a second hand reflex (at a very amateur level😜)
With this prologue you will understand that it will be difficult for me to try to capture everything that Port has transmitted to me without lengthening me too much … I will try to summarize everything I can so as not to be too heavy 😅
Before start, I’d like to talk about how we got there from the airport. Our accommodation was in the old center, near the Ribeira (by the way, an area with lots of charm) and we decided to arrive with the Terravision / GoIn buses. I can not be happier with the service they gave us, they picked us up at the airport at the scheduled time, we were alone on the minibus, and in about 20 minutes they left us in the center of the city, choosing between the Boavista and Allies area . They also ask for your hotel and, if it is accessible (some streets are pedestrian and others directly impossible for traffic) they even let you in the door. And the return to the airport exactly the same. We booked the ticket from Madrid for what was very comfortable: you give them the voucher and go! All for € 9 per person round trip. The Old Porto
The heart of the city is relatively small and it is easy to see it walking. That yes, be prepared for the slopes that are many and steep! To summarize a little the «must to see» of the city center:
In Baixa we can take Avenida Aliados as a starting point. It is a wide promenade filled with elegant buildings and fast food chains with the impressive building of Porto Town Hall. Among its buildings we also find the one that says it is the most beautiful McDonald’s in the world, an old coffee shop where the ladies of Porto continue to come and have their coffee in the afternoon.
If we take this Avenue to the East, we have the area of Bolhão, with its traditional popular market and the street of Santa Catarina, the great shopping street full of shops ideal for a morning shopping. In this street is the famous Capela Das Almas with its beautiful blue tiles.
The Bolhão Market would be one of the essentials of the trip: in it we spent a lot of time mixing with the Portuguese and alternating in their positions, dotted with little bars where we can have something to drink. It literally falls into pieces and is one of the maximum examples of the decadence of this city, but at the same time is the most authentic and is full of history. I recommend very much to drink a vinho verde or to make a small tasting of Porto in the small stand of wine in which for very little money you will taste the best ones of the zone (recommended by its friendly owner) next to some tapas of Portugal, being able to choose between cheese, ham or salpicón.
Right next to the market, in the same street Formosa, you have the famous and hyper-photographed old stores Comer and Chorar for Mais and A Perola de Bolhão, one in front of the other, very cute
Taking the Aliados Avenue on the left, we have the area of Galeria de Paris, very lively in evening for a drink, and higher (up an interesting hill), we arrive at the Praça de Carlos Alberto, another must in the city. This place has a lot of life and I think it is beautiful, ideal to sit in any of its terraces and have a coffee (for example, in the Moustache Cafe which was one of our favorites). Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 7 pm have a market called Portobelo, and you will also see several clothing, accessories and antique objects stores in the area.
To the south of the Baixa district we find the monumental area of Porto, an area declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 1996 that includes the old walled city, besides the bridge of Dom Luis and the Monastery of Serra do Pilar, on the other side of the Duero. It is full of narrow and steep streets and is an area with lots of magic. Here are many points of interest to visit:
Plaza de Clérigos, named for its tower of medieval origin with privileged views of Porto (yes, provided you climb its more than 200 steps and pay an entrance fee of € 4). The climb is hard and is done through narrow passages, and at peak times can generate so much «jam» of people that even a traffic light exists!! This square is today the nerve center of Porto, the trendy area for dining and drinking, is full of bars, terraces and trendy shops.
Just in front of this square is one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, the Lello & Irmão bookstore. It is said that it was a source of inspiration for the author of Harry Potter and queues to enter are giants, but the entrance (€ 4) is worth the impressive staircase in which everyone wants to take the photo.
The station of Sao Bento, railway station, is an incredible place that reminds of another time and in it emphasizes the entrance completely lined with tiles, very beautiful to see.
In front of the station begins one of the most beautiful streets of Porto and one of my favorites, Rua das Flores, a pedestrian street full of buildings with colorful facades and filled with tiles, in which there are hundreds of shops, restaurants and terraces. It is very characteristic for how well it is adapting to the times and one of the clearest examples of the renewal of the city.
Near this street we find the Cathedral or Sé, with its famous cloister of blue tiles and the Pelouriño, a curly column where justice was imparted in feudal time. From here, in addition, we have more incredible views.
The Coastal Porto
One of the liveliest areas is the Ribeira, for me another of the most emblematic areas of Porto. In it is the famous Muro dos Bacaloheiros and Ribeira Square with its colorful facades that I fell in love with, and is ideal to walk at any time of day although it has a greater charm at dusk. In front of it we have the views of Vilanova de Gaia and the wineries, which can be crossed by the bridge, by boat or by cable car. On the Ribeira stroll you will see several of the most reputed fish restaurants in the city, such as Fish Fixe or Chez Lapin, where we can dine with breathtaking views of the bridge and with a complete view of Vilanova de Gaia.
- Ponte Dom Luis I: crossing the bridge on its second floor (the highest) was one of the best moments on this trip. Being able to see Oporto from the heights and to cross the river with those views was exciting and spectacular. So do not think about it and go up from the Sao Bento Station on Vimara Peres Avenue to catch it from the end of Oporto and cross it to Vilanova de Gaia.
- Ribeira Elevador: s a free lift from which you can enjoy beautiful views of Porto, Douro and the surrounding area. As it is not easy to find, the trick is to look up to locate it.
- Armazem: Walking through Ribeira through the Alfandenga, look for this place in front of the Museum of Transportation and Communications. Besides making exhibitions and concerts, it is ideal to drink something surrounded by old objects and stands.
- Jardins do Palácio de Cristal: on the Ribeira, is a spectacular botanical garden with very good views ideal to take a walk in the morning in which you can stroll surrounded by peacocks. They say it is one of the most romantic places in Porto and I can attest to it.
- Vilanova de Gaia and the wineries: in front of the Ribeira, crossing the river, this place is ideal to take a walk with the best view of Porto, and to visit some of its wineries. Sandeman, Taylor’s or Graham’s are of the most famous and in them are made tastings of the famous wine of Porto, a denomination of origin of wine exclusive of the Portuguese Duero Valley. Some tours include a walk through the Duero in Rabelo to see its six bridges and also a visit to one of these wineries. In Gaia, we also visited the Beira Rio Market, with many places to eat and drink, and another of the must see is the hotel The Yeatman, the first hotel dedicated to the wine of the area and with the “Dick’s Bar” to taste a good port in the afternoon. Also, it also has very good views of the city.
- Afurada: crossing the Duero aboard an old wooden boat that leaves from Cais do Ouro, near the Ponte da Arrábida, we arrive at a small town that seems from another time and in which there is not the stress and the bustle of the center. It is a fishing village where women still do laundry in the public stone wash basins. The less touristy and yet more authentic alternative to Porto.
The Bohemian Porto
And to finish with the visit to the city, the neighborhood of Miguel Bombarda would represent the most bohemian and alternative side of Porto. There are numerous art galleries, some cafes, curios stores and discos and boutiques of local designers. It is located in the high (and flat!) Area of Porto and is full of graffiti on the streets and low houses with gardens at the back. To see this neighborhood, it is imperative to go through the art gallery Ap’arte, the Bombarda Mall with Portuguese cult brands like Storytaylors, look at Pensión Favorita, the Gallery Hostel or the beautiful Mercador Hotel.
A little further down, we have the Lumière Galleries with its shops (like the Coraçao Alecrim shop), bars and even the smallest Japanese restaurant in the world. And to finish the walk around the neighborhood, we can visit Ó! Galeria to discover the world of the Enlightenment ending with a tea in Rota do Chá, place of worship in which they offer more than 300 varieties of tea!
Eat & Going Out
If there is something that drew our attention especially were the thousand of restoration options of the city. Porto is full of cozy and intimate little restaurants where you can spend unforgettable moments around the table. The counterpart is that, at peak times of the meal and dinner, they get crowded right away so it is more than advisable to book.
The cuisine is extensive, ranging from the simple sandes or toasted sandwiches (fast sandwiches ideal for a touristic day) to the most homemade and traditional cuisine, passing through the francesinhas (the famous sandwich bread stuffed with sausage and meat, coated with slices of cheese that is gratinado and bathed in a spicy sauce made from beer and tomato), the guts in the fashion of Porto (the favorites of the tripeiros at noon and quite similar to calluses), pregos and bifanas ( typical pork sandwiches, the first of veal and the second of strips of pork with sauce), fresh fish and seafood … in any cafeteria you can chop down something to eat and also in the restaurants triumph the tabus or tables of cheese and sausage to share. And to drink, we have from the local beer Superbock to the refreshing green wine, the sweet wines of Porto or even the cocktail Porto Tonic (1/3 of white port + 2/3 of tonic). Also the prices are quite affordable, so my list of recommendations this time is quite extensive, but really I find it hard to reduce when all the sites I visited I liked it so much !! Here are my favorite places to eat and go out in Porto:
1. Cantina 32. Rua das Flores, 32
Nice, intimate, detailed, cozy and with a delicious menu … Cantina 32 is one of the great discoveries of the trip. It is so cool that it is not surprising that it is one of the fashionable places and if you decide to visit it (it is necessary to do it) it is imperative to book by phone several days in advance. The place is decorated with industrial air but at the same time very warm and although the portions are not the most abundant for me is a bonus because it leaves room for your star dessert: the cheescake, served in a pot resembling a pot of earth . Another of the delicious dishes of the menu are croquettes of alheira with omelette of honey and mustard. But if you want to try a little of everything, ask for «selection of everything and anything else» (a table of cheeses, cold meats, salmon, cheese and jams) and share the seconds. Average price, and an experience to remember.
2. Tábua Rasa, Rua da Picaria 68
In Tábua Rasa all products and raw materials are 100% Portuguese and you can even buy them in the same place, a small place clad in light wood and dimly lit where you feel like stretching the hours and stretching the dessert. The waiters explain all the dishes to the detail and make you some interesting recommendations, and the ideal (although not only tables) is to taste their tábuas, available in different sizes, of cheeses and sausages. Highly recommended their own wine, delicious! And the final bill quite affordable for how good everything was and what we enjoyed!
3. A Sandeira, Rua dos Caldeireiros 85
When a small local business is always crowded with people and there is queue to enter, it is a sign that something good has inside. And this is what happens in A Sandeira, a site specialized in sandwiches with delicious and original recipes, but also has an economic menu of the day for only € 5 which includes soup + sandwich or salad + drink. All this makes it occupy the 3rd place on the list as a perfect alternative for a quick lunch between visit and sight to the key points of the city. My Favourite? the Sao Bento sandwich, for € 4.90, with tomato, brie and avocado … mmmmm !!!
4. Porta 4, Rua Barbosa de Castro 4
A restaurant with only four tables? This gastropub serves tapas and wines to a maximum of 10 people, with options for vegans and vegetarians. Ideal for lovers of bohemian environments and with personality, this place is unique, familiar, endearing, and breathes charm on all sides. Not only the author’s tapas are spectacular, the wine is also worthy of mention … the waiters are very friendly and they make very good recommendations, in addition at all times you will have the view of the cooks preparing with all their care the dishes. Do you need more reasons to visit? 😉
5. Rota do Chá, Rua Miguel Bombarda 457
I think Rota do Chá is one of those must see places in Oporto and it mixes concepts with a lot of charm: restaurant, tetería and shop. It offers a letter of more than 300 teas and is distributed in three floors with different colonial environments that move between the Portuguese and Asian design. The best is his garden, super detail and ideal to spend time reading a good book. In addition, on Fridays, they offer the possibility of exchanging an old book for a cup of tea. A place with a lot of magic and inescapable charisma in the area of Bombarda.
6. Raiz, Largo dos Lóios 8
More central impossible, Raiz is a tiny restaurant with privileged views to the Clérigos Tower in which the atmosphere is warm, the background music soft, the lighting is in charge of the candles and the dishes in addition to original and well presented are delicious It is difficult to choose: the meat and the hamburgers are spectacular, the octopus, the cod … As always, you have to book, but it’s worth it.
7. Galerias de Paris, Rua Galeria de Paris 67
In the Rue Gallery of Paris, a beautiful street that takes you to Flanders, there is this restaurant-bar, a somewhat quirky place full of old objects that is ideal for a few tapas at night. Here they serve the famous peixinhos da horta, and the atmosphere is lively and very characteristic. You can also stop for coffee or a cocktail in the evening, with the advantage of being in one of the most beautiful and lively streets of the city.
8. La Champanheria da Baixa, Rua da Picaria 107
This bohemian and warm bar-lounge seems ideal for a drink in a comfortable and intimate atmosphere and away from the noise and the party. In addition to cavas and sparkling wines, you can also have wine and accompany everything with tapas, so it is also an option for a light dinner or before dinner.
9. Ora Viva (Rua da Fonte Taurina 83) or Chez Lapin (Rua dos Canastreiros 40-42)
In order not to fall into the most typical, it would be the famous Fish Fixe, I unify these two alternatives because they are two great options for tasting traditional dishes (especially cod) and fish. In Ora Viva presumed to have the best cod in the city and probably true, is a restaurant in an alley behind the Ribeira quite good and with amazing prices. Chez Lapin would be the elegant version, right on the shore of the Ribeira and with slightly higher prices.
10. As 7 Maravilhas, Rua das Taipas 17
As 7 Maravilhas is a place that the locals recommend for their authenticity, and although it may be a bit run down the truth is that it is hidden in its interior a very pleasant atmosphere and delicious tapas both Portuguese and international that can also be accompanied by Local craft beer. They open only in the evenings except the weekends that start at 13h (I say especially so that you do not go up the hill and you find the doors closed!)
11. O Caraças, Rua das Taipas 27
Very basic and simple, but at the same time super homemade and traditional, this restaurant goes completely unnoticed because it does not even have a sign, but just at the entrance appears a blackboard in which are shown the only two dishes of the day. In O Caraças there is no menu or prices, you can only choose between these two dishes but they are spectacular: traditional style, copious and delicious, and at a price of laughter (you can eat for 15 € two people, drink and desserts included) taste the authentic Portuguese cuisine.
12. DeGema (Rua Do Almada 253) y Munchie (Praça D. Filipa de Lencastre, 183)
They are two more or less fast food places where the hamburgers are spectacular: served with homemade potatoes and with a spectacular meat. Both have a great reputation in the city and are always crowded, but while you wait you can also hang out with a craft beer. All for very tight prices that hardly exceed 10 € per person.
13. Amarelo Torrada (Rua José Falcão 29) and Pé de Cabra (Passeio de Sao Lazaro 5)
These two cafes I recommend especially at breakfast time. In Amarillo Torrada they boast of making the best toast or toast in Porto and the truth is that it is delicious! They serve it along with homemade orange, pumpkin and strawberry jam and you can choose the type of bread. A tip, order only 1/2 toast if you do not want to roll out of there! And in Dama Pé de Cabra you can give them a tribute with their copious breakfasts and brunchs, with which to load butt batteries for the rest of the day.
14. Pimenta Rosa, Rua Miguel Bombarda 22
In the bohemian and alternative neighborhood of Porto, Pimenta Rosa offers a buffet of great organic food with quinoa dishes, cous cous, vegetable quiches, cold vegetable salads … in which for about 7-8 € per person you eat in a healthy and delicious way. If you are walking around this neighborhood, go try it.
15. O Cometa, Rua de Tomás Gonzaga 87
This restaurant is 100% recommended for an intimate dinner. Although it is a bit hard to find – it is semi hidden– it is well worth finding because you will feel at home inside: it is very intimate, small, comfortable and warm, and the food is very rich and accompanies well the moment.
16. Base, Passeio dos Clérigos
If you are lucky enough to visit Porto with a great sunny day, one of the most recommended alternatives is to stop at Base, a restaurant in which the most remarkable is its pleasant outdoor grassy terrace with views of the Torre de los Clerigos in the background.
17. Flow Restaurant & Bar, Rua da Conceição 63
Flow is one of those places that you love and enter your eyes, it seems to me precious. Like the vast majority of restaurants in the city, again it is imperative to book. Although it is not the cheapest considering the average price of Porto, for about € 30 per person you will have a very interesting experience in which a very modern restaurant is mixed with quality products and with generous portions.
18. Book (Rua de Aviz 10) and Casa do Livro (Galeria de Paris 85)
The thing is books! Book is an original restaurant due to the fact that you will eat surrounded by bookshelves full of books, but I would also especially recommend it for the pre-dinner hour for being a super chic place with good music and delicious cocktails, not in vain has it become in a kind of fashionable place of the move of Oporto. If you go, order your famous caipirinha with clove and cinnamon. And Casa do Livro is a lively pub or cocktail bar of the night in Porto that preserves the essence of the old bookstore that was in the past.
19. Cantinho do Avillez (R. Mouzinho Silveira 166) and D.O.P. (Largo São Domingos 18)
And for those who are looking for something more elaborate and sophisticated, these two restaurants are already bigger words. Cantinho do Avillez is a place where trips inspire the dishes and the decor is simple and relaxed. His chef José Avilez works on dishes that are both sophisticated and simple, such as the portugesinha or Portuguese stew empanada or the fish from the garden with tartar sauce. D.O.P. is a restaurant with a Michelin star in which to enjoy a gastronomic experience of quality in which the chef Rui Paula offers a creative cuisine with Portuguese roots in which they emphasize dishes like the potatoes stuffed with salmon or the cod to 55 degrees. The average price in both is about € 50 per person.
20. Bar Ponte Pensil, Rua de Cima do Muro 14
If I had to choose an ideal place to have a glass of port at sunset, it would surely be the Ponte Pensil Bar, with an unbeatable location on the River Duero and close to the Dom Luis I Bridge. I recommend it for its terrace is privileged and because only the views are worth it even if you are having coffee, but otherwise do not expect too much, the service is fair and neither is it worth it to go to eat.
21. Majestic Cafe, Rua Santa Catarina 112
I could not finish the list without mentioning it, since going to Porto and not visiting the Cafe Majestic is like an incomplete visit. This historic and elegant café in the middle of Rua Santa Catarina shopping street is a kind of icon in the city. Sumptuous and elegant, you will be transferred to the Belle Epoque in seconds for its art-deco style and beyond being able to contemplate it, I would not say that you would stay much longer than to drink coffee and admire its beauty …
Shopping in Porto
But not only food is in Porto … in the walks around the city you will find interesting and interesting little shops that are sure to make you stop and have a look at the windows. These are the ones that I liked the most:
- A vida portuguesa, the famous local store that has rescued from oblivion so many traditional products from Portugal, is very close to the Lello & Irmão Bookstore in the R. da Galeria de Paris 20. There is everything from antique posters to wooden toys, magnets , auxiliary furniture .. besides a ladder also photogenic and characteristic.
- Casa Almada, if you like interior design here you will find vintage furniture and design pieces very well preserved. In Rua do Almada 544.
- A Perola de Bolhão y Comer e Chorar por Mais, I have already commented them before, but I love to be the typical heaps of life in which to acquire cheese, sausages, wines or preserves. Both in Rua Formosa.
- Violet&Ginger, a precious shop with clothing, accessories, jewelry, decorative items and books at Largo São Domingos 99.
- Patch Porto, ein the district Miguel de Bombarda, has unexpected things on the first floor and clothing vintage on the bottom floor. In Rua do Rosario, 193.
- Taken, at the beginning of the commercial street Rua Santa Catarina, is a beautiful store with urban fashion that is worth visiting.
- Lobo Taste y Hats and Cats, both owned by the same owners, where everything they sell is handmade in Portugal. In Largo São Domingos 20 and Rua do Infante D. Henrique 117.
- Coração Alecrim is a vintage shop with ceramics, clothes and accessories in which you can also dine. In Travesia de Cedofeita 28, near the Plaza de Carlos Alberto.
Sleep in Oporto
I am very happy with the accommodation we chose during our visit to Porto, a small and beautiful Guest House next to the Ribeira called Ribereidge Guest House: a room with a precious light and a modern and hot decoration, a delicious breakfast and charming hosts joined a perfect location, do that it is an ideal option for 80 € the night, included breakfast.
But we were hesitating between this and the following four accommodations that we also liked and that I leave here if you can be useful to plan your trip:
Gallery Hostel: This hostel with very good prices and an excellent location in Bohemian Quarter or Arts District is a place with impressive decoration, clean and neat rooms and common spaces always lively with cultural activities. In its façade, the typical Portuguese tiles, and also has a beautiful garden. If you do not want to stay, you can go to dinner at his restaurant where for only € 10 you can eat well and enjoy the friendliness of its staff. In Rua Miguel Bombarda 222, prices from 55 € per night.
Porto A.S. 1829 It is a beautiful hotel located just off Rua das Flores located in a historic building in which all rooms have views. It is a modern establishment and decorated with great taste, although the main drawback is that it does not include breakfast and if you ask for a supplement. It is in Largo São Domingos 45-55 and its price is 78 € per night (without breakfast)
1872 River House is an exceptional accommodation located in a beautiful pink building and located in a unique spot in the Ribeira. It is more expensive (about 150 € if you ask for rooms with views of the river, which are the best) but if your trip is special or you can afford it it is well worth it. In Rua do Infante D. Henrique 133.
We also look at the Flores Village Hotel & Spa, in Rua das Flores 139, a very nice and charming boutique hotel that has a panoramic garden and a roof terrace with great views of the city. Very central and of great quality. Price: € 144
Finally, Pestana Vintage Porto is one of those wonderful hotels that take care of every detail to make your stay unforgettable. It is right on the river bank and your breakfast on the terrace with the view is the amazing. It is in Praça da Ribeira 1 and its price per night is about 140 €.
…And discover the surroundings
Although the center of Porto is quite manageable and looks in a couple of days, its surroundings are also amazing and, weather permitting, are worth a visit. Some of the most recommended sites would be:
Piscinas das Mares: they are one of the best kept secrets of Porto and are an architectural work worthy of seeing by the sea, in perfect harmony with the surroundings. Although the water is freezing, the bravest can be encouraged to take a dip. They are about 30 minutes from Porto, in Leça da Palmeira.
Foz: Foz can be reached by bike from Porto, and on arrival we will see how the Duero flows into the Atlantic. In addition to the beach, Voz has a nice old town and very cool restaurants like Pedro Lemos , Cafeína or Praia da Luz. And next to the beach, a place where they are said to be the best bolos of reis and pasteis de nata: Tavi.
Praia do Aterro and Praia do Molhe: the first one is spectacular, long and with a fine sand that invites to spend the day lying down. In it you will also find the famous restaurants L´Kodac y Terminal 4450 . The second, smaller and with some rocky areas, is more welcoming and cozy.
Aveiro and Costa Nova: also accessible through excursions from Porto including a cruise in Moliceiro, Aveiro is only 1h away and is a town that breathes Portuguese charm. Its coast, Costa Nova, is about 10-12 kms. and is known for its colorful little houses, formerly occupied by the fishermen and called «palheiros» that nowadays welcome bars, ice cream shops or private houses.
They say that Guimarães is one of the most beautiful areas and is about 50 kms. of Porto. This historic city can be visited by taking the train at Sao Bento station in about 1 hour and it is worth to enjoy its historical center with the beautiful squares interconnecting them, the Ducal Palace and climb to the Mountain of Penha using the Cableway.
Located in the heart of Porto, Pinhão is located in a beautiful meander of the Douro and has a viewpoint that is among the 7 with the best views of Europe with a spectacular panoramic view of the Valley. Surrounded by vineyards and steep slopes where some of the best oaves are made, it is full of wineries and allows you to climb the river from the Folgosa do Douro dock to the heart of the Alto Douro, on board a traditional flat bottom vintner boat with Douro-a-Vela.
We finished as always with some suggestions for the suitcase … in this case in addition to checking the weather well (we did a summer time in October), the key is to wear the most comfortable footwear you have to better climb the impossible slopes of the city …;)
