Buenos Lunes!!

Esta semana nos quedamos por España para descubrir una ciudad de la que ya los romanos se enamoraron en el pasado y que a día de hoy está en plena ebullición y reinvención de modernidad. Gijón tiene un poco de todo: mar, naturaleza, gastronomía, cultura, marcha… y me parece un destino ideal para hacer una escapadita, así que hoy vengo a contaros todos sus secretos…

Diez buenas razones para escaparse a Gijón

3. Cimadevilla

Cimadevilla es un barrio marireno de pescadores que forma una península redondeada que une y separa las dos playas de Gijón. Me pareció uno de los lugares con más encanto y más representativos de la ciudad, que siempre huele a sidra y marisco. Sus calles son empedradas y muy empinadas, y subiendo por ellas llegamos al Cerro de Santa Catalina. Caminando por Cimadevilla podréis haceros una foto con el monumento a Don Pelayo, ver la arquitectura más típica de la ciudad y edificios muy singulares como la Casa de los Ramirez de Jove, el Museo de Jovellanos, la Torre del Reloj, la Capilla de los Remedios, la Antigua Fábrica de Tabaco, el Convento de las Agustinas, o incluso ver el Retablo del Mar para no perderse el detalle de cómo vivían los primeros habitantes del barrio (en su mayoría pescadores). Lo mejor es perderse entre sus calles y dejarse llevar durante el día, mientras que por la noche la zona destaca por concentrar la mayoría de la animación y ocio nocturno de la ciudad.

Dar una vuelta por el centro es caminar por el Paseo de Begoña donde se encuentra el Teatro Jovellanos, la Plaza Mayor, el Ayuntamiento de estilo neoclásico, o calles como la Calle Corrida -o centro comercial de Gijón -, la calle Capua, o la calle Cabrales, donde quedan todavía ejemplos de edificios surgidos a raíz del despegue industrial de principios del siglo XX como el edificio Banco Central entre Los Moros y Munuza. No debemos de dejar de visitar la Plaza del Instituto, conocida como la plaza del Parchís, y la Plazuela de San Miguel, de trazado elipsoidal.

7. El Parque de Isabel la Católica

Lo llaman el pulmón verde de Gijón y pasear por él es encontrarse con su enorme estanque de dos lagos con patos, ocas o cisnes, una gran variedad de especies vegetales, y que se te crucen todo tipo de animales como gallinas, avestruces, loros… un lugar muy entretenido al que los gijonenses acuden a hacer deporte, pasear, aprovechar los rayos del sol o tomar el aperitivo… muy recomendable para dar una vuelta después del desayuno y hacer tiempo hasta el mediodía. Siguiendo por la gran extensión del parque llegaréis al Estadio del Molinón, el Pueblo de Asturias, una gran zona verde en la que se recrea y pueblo típico asturiano con el típico hórreo, o la Plaza de Toros de estilo neomudéjar. Y si os apetece seguir caminando, por el Paseo de El Rinconín acabaréis llegando a la Playa de la Ñora.

8. El Mirador del Pico Sol (Picu del Sol) y el Mirador de la Providencia

No podían faltar en las recomendaciones de miradores: desde el Mirador Picu del Sol no sólo vais a tener Gijón a vuestros pies, sino que además podréis divisar parte de Avilés e incluso la Cordillera Cantábrica si el tiempo os lo permite. Y el Mirador de la Providencia, a media hora caminando desde el Muro, además de contar con su pequeña ermita del mismo nombre, es en sí mismo una escultura llena de escaleras y desde lo alto de ellas también ofrece una espectacular panorámica de la ciudad.

9. El Palacio de Revillagigedo

 

También conocido como palacio del Marqués de San Esteban del Mar, es un gran palacio enclavado en la plaza del Marqués de San Esteban. Hoy en día es la sede del Centro Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo Palacio de Revillagigedo, y su construcción se remonta a tiempos de la Edad Media, cuando presumiblemente se edificó la primera de las dos torres del conjunto.

 

10. La Universidad Laboral

La Universidad Laboral es el edificio construido más grande de España y se suele llamar de manera popular Universón o Universona. La construcción ha sido restaurada en su totalidad y en ella se pueden realizar recorridos turísticos que incluyen la vista al teatro, diferentes plazas y subir a la torre.

Comer en Gijón

Si hay algo que de verdad deja huella en Gijón – y en Asturias en general-… es la comida! La calidad y la cantidad son su máxima, y además yo añadiría la variedad: desde pinchos a fabada, pasando por almejas, cachopos, sin olvidar alternativas para la nueva cocina moderna y creativa… recomendaros algún restaurante es un poco tontería porque en todos vais a comer fenomenal, pero os dejo algunos de los que más nos gustaron:

Restaurante Sidrería Tropical, donde nos comimos el mejor cachopo que hemos probado hasta el momento, acompañado de unas croquetas de cabrales memorables. Las raciones son enormes y la calidad excelente, por lo que hay que reservar si quieres asegurarte mesa. En la Avenida Rufo Garcia Rendueles 3, caminando hacia el Parque Isabel la Católica. Súper recomendable.

Casa Segundo, conocido por su mítica fabada y otras delicias tradicionales como el queso pitu o el hígado encebollado. Un restaurante pequeño, casero y muy auténtico en el que también es recomendable reservar, especialmente en fin de semana que se llena hasta los topes. En Camino Quintas, 231, a escasos metros del Jardín Botánico.

Casa Zabala, un restaurante de cocina tradicional asturiana y alguns toques vanguardistas en el barrio de Cimadevilla. Su carta tiene muchísimo donde elegir, pesacados, carnes, quesos, cecina… su ventresca de bonito a la parrilla es mítica. En Calle Vizconde de Campo Grande, 2.

Una apuesta más o menos segura y conservadora en plena Plaza Mayor podría ser Entreplazas,

muy cómodo, con amplio comedor y carta, donde nos sorprendieron con una cecina deliciosa y unos calçots que nunca esperábamos tomar en Gijón. En Plaza Mayor, 6.

Para probar la nueva cocina de Gijón con nuevos platos y sabores «de autor», La Salgar tiene un arroz con erizos sorpendente, y  Auga, frente al mar, unas sardinas con queso y manzana caramelizada totalmente originales.

 

 

De sidrerías y bares

Ir a Gijón exige tomar unas sidras, y para ello los lugares más hot serían tanto la Plaza Mayor como la  plaza del Lavaderu, que nos encantó por la vida y animación de sus locales. Los lugares más famosos para tomar sidra serían El Globo (de corte más tradicional) o Terra Astur (todo lo contrario, vanguardista y de ambiente neoyorkino)

Además de la sidra, Gijón también ofrece una buena ruta de vinos, donde destacan La Vida Alegre y el Turnedo, con su novedosa bodega.

Para tomar algo después de cenar, las zonas de  Cimadevilla y de Fomento son las que más número de pubs y bares nocturnos tienen, y además están casi unidas:

• En Cimadevilla: La Plaza (mítico local del Xixón Sound y propiedad de los componentes del grupo Manta Ray), El Lavaderu (donde la gente saca la bebida a la plaza), o Casa Fede. Hacia el lado de la Plaza Mayor, el Centenario y La Galana.
• En Fomento: el Audrey (con música de los 80), Bafi o Güito.

Si sois de los que os gustan los sitios algo más tranquilos, juesto al final de la playa (entre las escaleras 18 y 20) hay algunas terrazas y lugares para disfrutar al aire libre, y en el Varsovia os podrán crear todo tipo de cocktails y mezclas justo enfrente del mar. Si os gusta el rock&roll de los años 50 y queréis disfrutarlo con un margarita, entonces id al Savoy Club Café.

 

Dónde dormir

Para alojaros en Gijón, yo creo que lo mejor es escoger el centro, aunque es cierto que la zona del Parque de Isabel la Católica y el Molinón también son bonitas. Os dejo tres alojamientos muy chulos por si queréis tener donde elegir:

Hotel Blue Santa Rosa, para mí la mejor elección en la ciudad. Un 3 estrellas muy céntrico, muy buen precio (unos 40€ la noche), y muy cuidado en la decoración. Justo en la zona de tapeo y aperitivos, en la C/ Santa Rosa 4.

Hotel Central Gijón, un hotel con encanto en la Plaza del Humedal situado a unos 600 metros de la playa en el que tenéis habitaciones por 49€ la noche y con una decoración preciosa. En la Plaza del Humedal 4.

Parador de Gijón,muy pintoresco al ocupar un viejo molino centenario, se encuentra en la zona del Parque de Isabel la Católica y está rodeado de vegetación en un entorno muy tranquilo . Su precio oscila según la temporada, pero pueden encontrarse habitaciones a partir de los 80€.

2. Major Church of San Pedro

At the end of the promenade of El Muro, this church is located just by the sea in Campo Valdés, at one end of the San Lorenzo Beach, and its bell tower marks the hours of the city. The Church was built in the 1940s on an old building of the fifteenth century and was for a long time the only church in Gijón. In it you will be able to see the Roman Baths, discovered relatively recently when restoring the church.

6. The center

Strolling around the center is walking along Paseo de Begoña, where you can find the Jovellanos Theater, the Plaza Mayor, the Neoclassical Town Hall, or streets such as Calle Corrida, or Gijón shopping center, Capua Street, Calle Cabrales, where there are still examples of buildings that emerged as a result of the industrial take-off of the early 20th century, such as the Central Bank building between Los Moros and Munuza. We must not miss the Plaza del Instituto, known as the Plaza del Parchís, and the Plazuela de San Miguel, with an ellipsoidal layout.

7. The Park of Isabel la Católica

They call it the green lung of Gijón and walk around it is to find its huge pond of two lakes with ducks, geese or swans, a variety of plant species, and you cross all kinds of animals like chickens, ostriches, parrots. .. a very entertaining place to which the gijonenses go to do sport, to walk, to take advantage of the rays of the sun or to take the aperitivo … very recommended to make a return after the breakfast and to make time until the noon. Following the great extension of the park you will arrive to the Molinón Stadium, the Town of Asturias, a great green area in which it is recreated and typical Asturian village with the typical hórreo, or the Bullring of neomudéjar style. And if you want to continue walking, along the Paseo de El Rinconín you will end up arriving at Playa de la Ñora.

8. Pico del Sol (Picu del Sol) and Providence lookouts

You can not miss the recommendations of viewpoints: from the Mirador Picu del Sol you will not only have Gijón at your feet, but also you can see part of Avilés and even the Cantabrian Mountain Range if time allows. And the Mirador de la Providencia, a half-hour walk from the Wall, besides having its small hermitage of the same name, is itself a sculpture full of stairs and from the top of them also offers a spectacular panoramic view of the city.

9. The Palace of Revillagigedo

 

Also known as the palace of the Marquis of San Esteban del Mar, it is a large palace nestled in the square of the Marquis of San Esteban. Today it is the headquarters of the International Center of Contemporary Art Palace of Revillagigedo, and its construction dates back to the Middle Ages, when presumably the first of the two towers was built.

10. Tha Labor University

The Labor University is the largest constructed building in Spain and is commonly called Universally or Universona. The building has been completely restored and it is possible to take tourist routes that include the view of the theater, different squares and climb to the tower.

Eating in Gijón

If there is something that really leaves a mark on Gijón – and Asturias in general – … it’s the food! The quality and the quantity are their maximum, and I would also add the variety: from pinchos to fabada, passing through clams, cachopos, not forgetting alternatives to the new modern and creative cuisine … recommending a restaurant is a little silly because in all you are going to eat phenomenally, but I leave you some of the ones that we liked the most:

Restaurant Sidrería Tropical, Where we ate the best cachopo that we have tasted so far, accompanied by some memorable cabrales croquettes. The portions are huge and the quality excellent, so you have to book if you want to secure yourself a table. At Avenida Rufo Garcia Rendueles 3, walking towards Isabel la Católica Park.

Casa Segundo, known for its mythical fabada and other traditional delicacies like the cheese pitu or the liver encebollado. A small, home-cooked and very authentic restaurant in which it is also advisable to book, especially at the weekend it fills up. In Camino Quintas, 231, a few meters from the Botanical Garden.

Casa Zabala, A restaurant with traditional Asturian cuisine and some avant-garde touches in the neighborhood of Cimadevilla. Their menu has a lot to choose from, fish, meat, cheese, cecina … its grilled bonito is mythical. In Calle Vizconde de Campo Grande, 2.

A more or less safe and conservative bet in the Plaza Mayor could be Entreplazas,very comfortable, with large dining room and menu, where we were surprised with a delicious cecina and some calçots that we never expected to take in Gijón. In Plaza Mayor, 6.

To try the new cuisine of Gijón with new dishes and flavors «author», La Salgar has an amazing rice with hedgehogs, and Auga, In front of the sea, some sardines with cheese and caramelized apple totally original.

Cider places and bars

Going to Gijón requires a cider, and for this the hottest places would be both the Plaza Mayor and the Plaza del Lavaderu, which we loved for the life and animation of its premises. The most famous places to drink cider would be El Globo(more traditional cut) orTerra Astur (quite the opposite, avant-garde and New York atmosphere)

In addition to the cider, Gijón also offers a good wine route, where they stand out La Vida Alegre and Turnedo, with its new cellar.

For a drink after dinner, the areas of Cimadevilla and Fomento are the most number of pubs and night bars have, and also are almost united:

• Cimadevilla: La Plaza (mythical local of the Xixón Sound and property of the components of the group Manta Ray), Lavaderu(where people take the drink outside), or Casa Fede.To the side of the Plaza Mayor, the Centenario y La Galana.
• Fomento: Audrey(With music of the 80’s), Bafi o Güito.

If you are of those who like the somewhat quieter places, at the end of the beach (between stairs 18 and 20) there are some terraces and places to enjoy the outdoors, and in Varsow you can create all kinds of cocktails and mixes right un front of the sea. If you like rock & roll from the 50’s and want to enjoy it with a margarita, then go to Savoy Club Café.

Where to sleep

To stay in Gijón, I think it is best to choose the center, although it is true that the area of Isabel la Católica Park and Molinón are also pretty. I leave you three very cool accommodations to have where to choose:

Blue Santa Rosa Hotel, For me the best choice in the city. A very central 3 star, very good price (about 40 € a night), and very careful in the decoration. Right in the area of tapas and snacks, in 4 Santa Rosa Street.

Central Gijón Hotel, A charming hotel in the Plaza del Humedal located about 600 meters from the beach where you have rooms for 49 € per night and with a beautiful decoration. In the Square of the Humedal 4.

The Parador of Gijón, very picturesque to occupy an old mill, is located in the area of Isabel la Católica Park and is surrounded by greenery in a very quiet environment. Its price varies according to the season, but rooms can be found from 80 €.
