Febrero está siendo un tanto frío y los días no animan a estar demasiado en la calle. Y es ahora, mientras disfruto de mi café calentito y veo la animación de la ciudad desde el otro lado de la ventana, cuando más recuerdo la playa y esos días en los que todo sucede fuera, al aire libre, desde el amanecer hasta bien entrada la noche.

Inmediatamente me he transportado al verano de 2011, en pleno Caribe mexicano, y la inspiración ha venido sola: esta semana nuestra nueva etapa del viaje nos lleva hasta el paraíso de la impresionante Riviera Maya, en Quintana Roo: Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal, Cozumel… os apuntáis?

Quintana Roo es un lugar privilegiado al este de la Península del Yucatán y la región que ahora ocupa fue poblada por el antiguo pueblo maya en el pasado. Si hay algo que destaca en él son los vestigios de la cultura maya, con grandes yacimientos arqueológicos como Tulum, Cobá, X-Caret, Xel-Ha…o su increíble patrimonio biológico patente en la Reserva de la Biosfera de Asian Ka’an o el Gran Arrecife Maya (la segunda barrera de coral más grande del planeta)

Todo ello hace de la Riviera Maya uno de los mejores destinos de vacaciones en el mundo y no me extraña, nunca os faltarán planes ni propuestas:  sol, playas de ensueño, increíbles recursos naturales, arrecifes de coral, cenotes, cultura, arqueología, gastronomía, relax… Y lo que para mí fue «el momento cúlmen» del viaje: bañarme en playas de agua cristalina y arena blanca a los pies de la única ciudad que los mayas edificaron junto al mar: Tulum… priceless!

El vuelo Madrid – Cancún dura unas 10 horas y una vez en el aeropuerto, Playa del Carmen se encuentra a unos 45 minutos (55 kms. aprox.). Podréis coger un taxi (unos 400 pesos), un taxi colectivo con capacidad para unas 10 personas (entre 150-200 pesos por persona), o un autobús ADO (unos 150 pesos). Nosotros cogimos el bus que nos dejó en la estación central de Playa del Carmen, justo en la Quinta Avenida. En la misma estación hay puestos de cambio de moneda con buenas tasas de cambio.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN

En pleno corazón de la Riviera Maya tenemos Playa, como se la conoce y denomina habitualmente, un alegre lugar atravesado por la animada Quinta Avenida llena de restaurantes, boutiques y tiendas. En Playa nunca os vais a aburrir, ya que por el día os ofrece unas de las mejores playas del mundo y a la caída de la tarde os oferta todo tipo de planes, entre los cuales destacan su deliciosa gastronomía y sus lugares de marcha para escuchar desde reggae hasta rock o salsa.

En Playa se diferencian dos grandes zonas: Playa del Carmen y Playacar. En Playacar se concentran las grandes cadenas hoteleras y resorts todo incluido, pero yo personalmente me alegro de haberme alojado en Playa del Carmen porque te permite estar mucho más en contacto con el pueblo, sus gentes y con una oferta de ocio y entretenimiento mayor. Me encantó vivir el ritmo de sus calles, la alegría y la música de sus locales y los impresionantes restaurantes con comida casera en los que todos los platillos te hacían la boca agua… (todo en los Bites)

En el pasado, Playa era llamada Xaman-Ha (Agua del Norte), punto de partida de peregrinaje maya, y posteriormente pasó a ser un pueblo de pescadores. Hoy en día es el centro del cual parten las principales visitas de la Riviera Maya por su proximidad con lugares como Tulum, Cozumel, Xel-Ha, Xcaret o Sian Ka’an. Así que no lo dudéis, si queréis aprovechar al máximo este viaje, elegidlo como centro de operaciones!

Una buena manera de ir descubriendo todos los rincones de Playa es pasear por la emblemática 5ª Avenida,  2 pintorescos kilómetros a apenas 100 metros del mar Caribe que comienzan en la Plaza del Carmen: una amplia plaza rodeada de puestos de artesanía y joyería en la que se concentran terracitas, un Starbucks y diferentes tiendas de marcas internacionales. A la caída del sol, es frecuente ver algún espectáculo de fuegos o de saltimbankies que concentran grandes grupos de curiosos a su alrededor.

Ubicarte es facilisimo, las calles van en paralelo a esta gran Avenida de 5 en 5, y perpendiculares de 2 en 2, tan fácil que hasta para mí es casi imposible perderme! 😉

Siguiendo nuestro paseo, iremos encontrando puntos muy conocidos y famosos de la ciudad, como el Parque Fundadores y la Capilla de Nuestra Señora del Carmen. También es habitual toparse con un alegre grupo de mariachis, guerreros águila, artistas callejeros… siempre hay alguna sorpresa!

En su intersección con la Calle 12 es donde empieza la zona de marcha nocturna, concentrando desde pequeños bares y lounges en plena arena de playa hasta locales más grandes de varios pisos en los que escuchar música electrónica.

Una de las zonas que más me gustaron de este entretenido paseo fue la de la Calle Corazón, un callejón encantador lleno de luces, cafés y galerías de arte, un oasis de paz y tranquilidad en medio del bullicio de la 5ª Avenida.

En la 30,veréis una gran concentración de buses y colectivos, éstos últimos fueron el gran descubrimiento del viaje: se trata de minibuses o furgonetas utilizados para transportar a los locales que, por un una cantidad irrisoria de dinero, van haciendo paradas a lo largo de la carretera federal justo a la entrada de las grandes poblaciones de interés (así llegamos a Akumal o a Tulum…)

A medida que se va avanzando y vamos llegando a la intersección con la 34, la 5ª empieza a tener menor ajetreo y menos tiendas, y desde la 20 hasta la 34 empezaréis a encontraros una mayor concentración de restaurantes italianos y argentinos (dos comunidades muy asentadas en la zona) intercalados entre mexicanos y americanos. Aquí es donde encontramos uno de los mejores mexicanos en los que hemos estado nunca! (Se llama La Vagabunda, y os cuento todos los detalles en los Bites!)

Además de la 5ª Avenida, Playa cuenta con otra famosa arteria: la Calle 10. Con tiendas de locales que venden productos artesanales hechos a mano, ofrece una estampa diferente de la que acostumbramos a ver en la 5ª. Además, en ella se reparten una serie de restaurantes imperdibles en la visita a la ciudad.

Como veis, ya solo con este paseo vais a dar con mil propuestas para entreteneros, pero no hay que olvidar el otro gran atractivo de Playa: las playas! Paradisíacas, idílicas, de fotografía, de las mejores con las que me he econtrado por el mundo, Playa del Carmen cuenta con unas cuantas y todas ellas impresionantes. Las playas son todas de acceso libre y gratuíto, aunque si queréis usar tumbonas (camastros) y sombrillas, las tendréis que alquilar. Además también hay numerosos beach clubs de los grandes hoteles: por ejemplo nuestro hotel estaba en la 5ª Avenida pero contaba con uno justo antes de Playa Mamitas.

• A la altura de la calle 28, Playa Mamitas destaca por sus fiestas electrónicas con famosos DJ’s y por el mítico Mamitas´s Beach Club: fundado en el año 2000, hoy en día es uno de los lugares más visitados y sede de los mejores festivales de música de Playa del Carmen como los famosos BPM y Corona Sunset.

• A la altura d la calle 38, Playa Shangrila es algo más tranquila y concentra algunos hoteles.

• Caminando por Shangrila pasando el Club de playa (entre la 48 y el mar), hay una pequeña playa llamada Punta Esmeralda en la que hay más presencia de locales que de turistas.

• A la altura de la calle 6, está el Bar Restaurante Fusión, que cuenta con una pequeña extensión de playa en la que los clientes pueden escuchar música jazz, reggae o rock mientras toman el sol. Un poco más adelante, yendo hacia el puerto en la calle 2 (donde salen los ferries a Cozumel), la extensión de arena es mayor. Es en ésta zona donde íbamos a la caída de sol ya que los colores del agua y del cielo se volvían de color rosado… una luz impresionante!

• Finalmente tenéis Playacar:  aquí no os puedo dar demasiada información ya que es la zona en la que se ubican todos los grandes resorts y nosotros preferimos alojarnos en el centro, pero se sitúa a la derecha del puerto una vez pasado el conocido Bar- Restaurante Sr Frog, y concentra grandísimas extensiones de arenas blancas.

TULUM

A 63 kms. desde Playa del Carmen (y fácilmente accesible por medio de colectivos a través de la carretera), se encuentra Tulum, uno de los lugares más fotogénicos de la Riviera Maya por la peculiaridad de combinar las ruinas del Parque Arqueológico Nacional con las aguas color turquesa del Mar Caribe, la imágen más extendida de esta zona es la de una de sus estructuras más icónicas, «El Castillo», asomándose a los bordes del acantilado sobre la playa.

El Parque Nacional de Tulum  comprende 664 hectáreas y además de su interés arqueológico destaca por su riqueza tanto de flora como de fauna. En sus playas anidan las tortugas marinas, protegidas por el Gobierno Federal.

Una vez visitadas las ruinas, siguiendo el camino hacia la costa, se encuentra el acceso de la Playa Santa Fe,  desde donde se puede hacer el bonito paseo hacia las playas contiguas. Tulum cuenta con playas paradisíacas y semi vírgenes situadas entre las zonas hoteleras, una interesante sería la que se encuentra en el Hotel y Bar «OM». Además, es un pueblo pequeño y rústico muy agradable para visitar, por lo que también puede ser un buen lugar en el que alojarse si lo que se busca es una dosis mayor de naturaleza y tranquilidad frente al ajetreo de Playa del Carmen (no perderos los hoteles y alojamientos recomendados en los Bites)

También Tulum es un buen punto de acceso a excursiones o visitas a los Cenotes: a tan solo 3,5 kms. dirección Cobá se encuentra el Gran Cenote o el Calavera, y a unos 5 kms. hacia el Sur, el Cenote Cristal y el Escondido.

AKUMAL

A 37 kms. de Playa del Carmen, aparece este encantador pueblecito con una de las playas más espectaculares de la zona. Su nombre significa «el lugar de las tortugas» según la lengua maya, y es una playa protegida para su desove.

El principal atractivo es poder hacer snorkel junto a las grandes tortugas en su ámbito natural, una experiencia única y al alcance de todos, ya que en la misma playa hay un puesto de alquiler de material de snorkel para cualquiera de los visitantes. Se trata de una zona de gran atractivo turístico por ser una bahía de aguas transparentes, y cercana a aguas dulces de cuevas y ríos subterráneos, además de permitir el acceso a uno de los mas grandes arrecifes del mundo, por lo que es también uno de los lugares preferidos de los buzos.

Pasar el día en esta playa es uno de los planes más recomendables, en ella además de hacer snorkel y descansar podréis tomar algo en su apetecible chiringuito mientras disfrutáis de la belleza del increíble paraje que os rodea.

COZUMEL

Cozumel («Tierra de las Golondrinas»), es una isla de roca caliza proviniente de los arrecifes de coral que la rodean a la que se accede fácilmente cogiendo un ferry desde Playa del Carmen. Mide unos 48 kms. de largo y unos 15 kms. de ancho y cuenta con el snorkel y la visita a sus cenotes como principales actividades.

Sus aguas cristalinas son ideales para el buceo, el snorkel y todo tipo de deportes acuáticos, y sus playas son perfectas para tomar el sol y disfrutar de la tranquilidad de esta isla.

¿Buscáis inspiración para vuestra estancia en la Riviera Maya? Aquí unas cuantas recomendaciones de planes y excursiones  interesantes!

1) IR A UN CENOTE

Los cenotes son depósitos de agua de manantial (de agua dulce) de cierta profundidad (su nombre significa pozo o abismo), y eran lugares sagrados para los mayas. La Riviera Maya se caracteriza por tener en su haber gran cantidad de ellos y son una manera diferente de pasar un día de relax. Los más destacados:

• Cenote Dos Ojos: al norte de Tulum, su nombre hace referencia a sus dos bocas conectadas por una gran caverna. Este sistema de cavernas bajo el agua es uno de los más largos del mundo y cuenta con una impresionante caverna, el «Cenote Pit», con casi 121 metros de profundidad, y otra cueva en la que reside una gran población de murciélagos.

• Gran Cenote: a tan sólo un par de kilómetros de Tulum, es uno de los más conocidos de la zona. Su forma circular casi perfecta con un gran número de estalagmitas y estalactitas, gran cantidad de luz natural y unos 9 metros de profundidad lo hacen ideal para el snorkel o el buceo.

• Cenote Calavera: llamado así por sus formaciones rocosas en el techo que hacen la forma de calavera, es un lugar habitual para los buzos primerizos en  busca de su certificación en buceo en cavernas o espeleobuceo.

• Cenote Escondido: un lugar oculto entre la vegetación de la selva que cuenta con un  muelle de madera y rocas que miden de 1 a 4 metros de altura, desde donde se puede saltar al agua. También hay algunas cuevas submarinas para explorar.

2) VISITAR  XCARET o XEL-HA

• Xcaret es un parque arqueológico y temático situado a 6 kms. de Playa del Carmen considerado como el mejor parque ecológico del mundo. Incluye un museo, un acuario tropical, un aviario, una “aldea maya”, un jardín botánico, ruinas arqueológicas, piscinas y playas, así como más de 1 km de ríos subterráneos aptos para bucear o hacer snorkel. La entrada al parque cuesta unos 90$ y el horario de apertura es desde las 8:30h hasta las 21:30h.

• Xel-Ha ,(«Donde nace el Agua»), es un parque ecológico en el que el agua del río se une al Mar Caribe en una gran caleta, haciendo que en lugar convivan especies marinas y de agua dulce. Por ello, se le conoce como el acuario natural más grande del Mundo. El lugar puede recorrerse a pie, en bicicleta o en coche, permite bañarse, hacer snorkel, visitar sus cuevas… la entrada regular cuesta unos 85$ y el horario es de 8:30h a 18h.

3) EXPLORAR LAS INCREÍBLES PLAYAS DE ALREDEDOR DE PLAYA DEL CARMEN

• Playa Paamul: a 15 kms., está situada en una bahía rocosa rodeada de bungalows y áreas para acampar frente al mar, y es muy frecuentada para realizar snorkel en los cercanos arrecifes.

• Playa Xcacel y Xcacelito: a 44 kms., fue declarada en 1988 como Santuario de la Tortuga Marina y desde Mayo hasta Octubre permite observar el desove de las especies verde y caguama. El horario de acceso a la playa es desde las 9 hasta las 18h, a partir de las 21h, los biólogos trabajan juntos para proteger a las hembras y a los huevos de  tortugas. Desde esta playa también parte un camino natural hacia un cenote abierto.

• Playa Xpuha: a 25 kms., es una playa con una profundidad de medio metro elegida por los buzos para sumergirse en los en los arrecifes cercanos. Desde aquí se puede acceder al parque ecológico en el que se encuentra el cenote Manatee y también encontraréis en las proximidades el Cenote Azul.

4) DESCUBRIR LA RESERVA NATURAL DE SIAN KA’AN

• La Reserva Natural de la Biosfera de Sian Ka´an, «el lugar donde empieza el cielo», se encuentra a 160 kms. de Playa del Carmen y es un espacio natural protegido que consta de 530 mil hectáreas de selva tropical, lagos, pantanos, bahías, pozos y arrecifes. Es el hábitat natural de diversas especies como jaguares, pumas, venados cola blanca, cocodrilos, monos araña y aves, a los que podréis ver en su ámbito natural.

5) VISITAR UNO DE LOS PRINCIPALES PUEBLOS MAYAS: CHICHÉN ITZÁ

• Situada en Norte de la península de Yucatán, entre Mérida y Valladolid, se encuentra la zona arqueológica de Chichén Itzá, la más impresionante y mejor restaurada de las antiguas ciudades mayas. La excursión os llevará un día completo (el viaje en autobús desde Playa del Carmen no baja de las 3 horas), pero merece verdaderamente la pena. Nosotros aprovechamos para hacer noche allí para ir más relajados, y encontramos un hotel-hacienda impresionante que os recomiendo en los Place Bites.

• ¿Qué decir de Chichén Itzá? Una de las 7 Maravillas del Mundo, fundada entre los años 325 y 550, la capital más sobresaliente del área Maya a finales del periodo Clásico e inicios del Postclásico y actual Centro Sagrado para los mayas. La zona está presidida por la Pirámide Kukulcán, una pirámide de cuatro lados que culmina en un templo rectangular y que durante el transcurso de varios días alrededor de cada equinocio proyecta las sombras de sus aristas configurando la imagen del cuerpo de la serpiente-dios, que al paso de las horas parece moverse descendiendo y rematando en la mencionada cabeza pétrea situada en la base inferior de la escalinata.

• El lugar cuenta también con otros atractivos como el «Cenote Sagrado», «El Caracol» u observatorio, el «Juego de Pelota», el «Grupo de las Mil Columnas» o el «Templo de los Guerreros» Abierto de 8h a 17h, el acceso libre sin guías ni excursiones cuesta unos 3,5$.

6) DESCUBRIR LA ANIMADA VIDA NOCTURNA DE PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Otra de las principales ofertas de Playa del Carmen es el ocio nocturno, la zona destaca por su animada marcha que se reparte principalmente en la Calle 12, donde las mujeres no pagan entrada y se benefician de privilegios como invitaciones o días en los que se celebra la «ladies night»con barra libre gratis de ron, tequila y vodka hasta cierto horario según el lugar. A lo largo de la Calle 12 se encuentran:

• Pura Vida, para disfrutar de música propia de Argentina (rock, cumbia, canciones ochenteras).
• La Santanera, una disco-cantina underground y after con música electrónica  en  una atmósfera ecléctico-tropical, es sin duda uno de los mayores referentes de la vida nocturna  en Playa.
• Bar Hidden y la Mezcalinna, para tomar copas, mezcales y cervezas mas económicas apuntando al público local.
• Blue Parrot con sus shows de fuegos en la arena, fue fundado en 1982 por dos extranjeros y durante un tiempo fue llamado la «Gloria» gracias a su ambiente tanto de noche como de día.
• Disco Coco Maya concurrida mayormente por Argentinos de diciembre a abril y por  israelitas de mayo a agosto.

La cocina mexicana aglutina tradiciones gastronómicas americanas y europeas, pero además, en la Riviera Maya, combina también recetas tradicionales elaboradas con productos locales provenientes de la cultura maya. Su ingrediente base es el maíz, que se combina con salsas de jitomate, chiles, frijoles, lima, aguacate, o chocolate para preparar los conocidos platos como el Guacamole, los Nachos, las Quesadillas, las Enchiladas, Fajitas, Flautas, Burritos, Tacos y Tamales.  En la mesa se empieza con los antojitos: Dzotobichay, Tamales Colados… se sigue con las sopas o entradas: Huevos Motuleños, Sopa de lima de Yucatán; de flor de calabaza; de elote; de aguacate y coco...luego el plato principal: el Mondongo Kabic, las enchiladas, tortillas, chilaquies, tacos, burritos rellenos…y existe una gran diversidad de postres: Buñuelos de Molde o Viento, Tamales dulces, Agua de guanábana, Camotes de dulce, Cajeta, Ate membrillo, Campechanas o Banderillas, Flan de café, Dulce de Zapote, Chongos Zamoranos, Guayabas en almíbar, Regañadas y Galletas de amaranto… Todo ello acompañado de un buen Tequila Reposado como digestivo.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Si algo tiene Playa del Carmen es una amplísima oferta de lugares en los que comer.  Nuestro hotel era Todo Incluido y no pudimos difrutar de ellos tanto como nos hubiese gustado, por lo que la próxima vez que visitemos Playa lo tendremos en cuenta! Aún así, pudimos probar casi la totalidad de éstos que que os comento, todos impresionantes!

• La Vagabunda, «Mexican Food with a Twist», en la calle 26 Norte Gonzalo Guerrero, es uno de mis favoritos. Un lugar  muy cerca de la playa en el que cenar bajo una palapa y degustar las maravillas de la cocina más auténtica y casera mexicana. Fajitas, guacamole, quesadillas, tacos, nachos… os va a costar decidir y seleccionar, por lo que seguramente repetiréis. Pedid también para acompañar el festín el agua de menta y limón o una de sus deliciosas Margaritas servidas en las copas típicas mexicanas!

• Aldea Corazón es un restaurante muy especial en Playa. Romántico y acogedor, con mesas repartidas al aire libre rodeadas de un jardín tropical y con platos de cocina mexicana actualizada, es un oasis en medio de la 5ª Avenida en el que el principal atractivo es la atmósfera relajante y mágica que recrea lo mejor de esta zona: cascadas, atrapa sueños, enredaderas, cenotes y árboles tropicales. Pero no solo el ambiente es importante, en su cocina podréis degustar deliciosas tortillas hechas a mano, queso quemado, pastel de pollo, y una muy buena selección de vinos y tequilas.

• Almirante Pech , en la 5ª Avenida con la calle 32, es un restaurante con apariencia de taberna tropical mexicana en el que se sirven platillos de cocina mexicana con buenos guiños a la tradición yucateca. Cuenta con una carta de coctelería muy completa, con el plus de que el barman personalice y cree tu propia bebida, y además suele tener música de DJ’s en directo.

• La Casa del Agua, destaca en plena 5ª Avenida por su espectacular fachada. Si pasais dentro, el interior tampoco decepciona: no solo por su restaurante, sino porque también encontraréis el bistró La Malagueña y una agradable terraza con unas vistas muy prometedoras. El restaurante ofrece cocina regional mexicana y platos de cocina internacional, con un menú muy variado en el que degustar preparaciones italianas,alta cuisine francesa, salsas suizas y hasta cocina fiel a la dieta mediterránea.

• La Cueva del Chango, es un lugar rodeado de vegetación que te hace sentir casi como en medio de la jungla. Un sitio todoterreno recomendable a cualquier hora del día (desde el desayuno hasya la cena), en el que además sirven platos vegetarianos y veganos. Lo más recomendable: los chilaquiles con salsa Morita, las enchilladas y los molletes en el desayuno. En la calle 38 Norte entre la 5ª Avenida y el Mar Col. Zazil Ha.

• Passion by Martin Berasategui. Aunque no entramos en este restaurante, sí me gustaría mencionarlo por ser de nuestro famosísimo Chef español con 7 estrellas Michelín. Una fusión de la gastronomía vasca con la mexicana dentro del Hotel Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla (5ª Avenida esquina con la calle 112). Ofrece un menú degustación de 7 platos con maridaje de vinos y su precio es elevado.

• Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraíso, en Playa Paraíso (Carretera Chetumal – P. Juarez Km 309, Playa Paraíso), dicen de él que es casi el mejor Todo Incluido de la Riviera Maya y es el establecimiento ganador del Mexico’s Traveller’s Choice Award en 2014.

• Luxury Bahía Principe Sian Ka’An Don Pablo Collection, en Akumal (Carretera Chetumal – Cancún Km 250), un hotel de lujo sólo para adultos en el corazón de la jungla maya.

Hoteles boutique y hoteles con encanto:

• Cabanas la Luna, en Tulum (Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila Km. 6.5), situado en una de las playas más bonitas de Tulum y donde el verdadero lujo no es la grandiosidad del edificio del resort, sino contar con una cabaña privada en plena playa a unos metros del Mar Caribe. Con un total de 10 cabañas, 4 de ellas frente al mar, desde 150$.

• Alaya Tulum by Ahau, en Tulum (Carretera Tulum -Boca Paila Km. 7.5), un complejo turístico basado en los principios de la Madre Naturaleza situado en un lugar escondido entre la selva y la playa. Ofrece retiros de yoga, eco-talleres, círculos chamánicos.. un oasis de paz y de espiritualidad en cabañas frente al mar con precios que empiezan desde los 92$.

• Hotel Lunata, en Playa del Carmen (5ta. Avenida s/n, Centro), por 94€ la noche, es un hotel cuidado hasta el mínimo detalle en plena 5ª Avenida y a tan solo una calle de la playa. Pequeño, acogedor y muy bien decorado, un tres estrellas de acierto seguro.

• La Pasión Hotel Boutique, en Playa del Carmen (Calle 10, entre la Avenida 15 y la Avenida 20), un hotel excepcional cercano a la Playa Mamitas que es una alternativa ideal al todo incluido: tranquilo, cómodo, con gran privacidad, con su propio beach club, multitud de pequeños detalles con los clientes… ideal. Y todo por 89€ la noche.

• Hacienda Chichén Resort, en pleno Chichén Itzá (Carretera Mérida-Puerto Juárez Km. 120, Zona Hotelera de Chichen Itzá), es un lugar muy especial con una ubicación privilegiada y más que recomendable para descansar de la visita a las ruinas. Rodeado de una extensa vegetación, las diferentes habitaciones se reparten en pequeñas villas de diseño ecológico y estilo colonial. Su precio, unos 150€ la noche.

Preparar la maleta para la Riviera Maya es muy fácil: pensad en calor y en poca ropa durante todo el día. Si vais a realizar alguna excursión a las ruinas mayas o a algún parque natural llevad ropa cómoda y no os olvidéis de algún vestido vaporoso para la noche. Durante mi viaje, no sé por qué, me apetecía mezclar cosas blancas con accesorios de mucho colorido, México anima a mezclar colores alegres y llamativos! Espero que os gusten las ideas de esta semana:

Y nada más por hoy, la verdad es que este pequeño paréntesis al verano me ha venido muy bien para afrontar de nuevo lo que queda del invierno de Madrid! Espero que, si alguno de vosotros está pensando en este destino, el post os haya resultado útil e interesante.

February is still somewhat cold and the days do not encourage being on the street. And it is now, as I enjoy my hot coffee and watch the animation of the city from the other side of the window, when more memory the beach and those days when everything happens outside, outdoors, from dawn until late the night.

Immediately I transported the summer of 2011, in the Mexican Caribbean, and inspiration has come alone: this week our new stage of the journey takes us to the paradise of the stunning Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo: Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Akumal , Cozumel … you join me?

Quintana Roo is a privileged place of the Yucatan Peninsula and the region now occupies was inhabited by the ancient Maya people in last place. If there is anything that stands in it are the remains of the Mayan culture, with major archaeological sites like Tulum, Cobá, X-Caret, Xel-Ha … amazing patent or biological heritage as the Biosphere Reserve of Sian Ka ‘ an or the Great Mayan reef (the second largest reef barrier in the world)

All this makes the Riviera Maya one of the best holiday destinations in the world and no wonder, never will be lacking plans or proposals: sun, great beaches, amazing natural resources, coral reefs, cenotes, culture, archeology, gastronomy, relax … and what for me was the «climax» of the trip: bathing on the beaches of crystalline water and white sand at the foot of the only Mayan city built by the sea: Tulum … priceless!

The flight Madrid – Cancun takes about 10 hours and once at the airport, Playa del Carmen is about 45 minutes (55 kms approx.). You can catch a taxi (about 400 pesos), a collective taxi with capacity for 10 people ( 150-200 pesos per person ) or an ADO bus (about 150 pesos). We took the bus dropped us off at the central station in Playa del Carmen, right on Fifth Avenue. In the same building there are Exchange offices with a good exchange rate .

PLAYA DEL CARMEN

In the heart of the Riviera Maya you have Playa, as it is commonly called, a happy place crossed by the lively Fifth Avenue full of restaurants, boutiques and shops.

In Playa you are going to never get bored, since the day we feature some of the best beaches in the world and nightfall will offer all kinds of plans, among which are its delicious cuisine and its many gears to hear from rock and reggae to salsa.

Two areas are comprised on Playa: Playa del Carmen and Playacar. In Playacar large hotel chains and all-inclusive resorts are concentrated, but personally I’m glad I stayed in Playa del Carmen because it allows you to be much more in touch with the people, and people with a greater range of leisure and entertainment. I loved living the rhythm of the streets, joy and music and stunning local restaurants with homemade food in all dishes made you salivate … (more info in Bites)

In the past, Playa was called Xaman-Ha (Northern Water), the starting point of Mayan pilgrimage, and later became a fishing village. Today it is the center which depart the major tours of the Riviera Maya for its proximity to places like Tulum, Cozumel, Xel-Ha, Xcaret or Sian Ka’an. So do not hesitate if you want to make the most of this trip, choose it as a hub!

A good way to discover every corner of Playa del Carmen is to walk through the iconic 5th Avenue, 2 scenic kilometers just 100 meters from the Caribbean Sea beginning in the Plaza del Carmen: a large square surrounded by stalls selling handicrafts and jewelery in which terraces, a Starbucks and various international brand shops are concentrated. At sunset, it is common to see a fireworks show or saltimbankies concentrating large groups of onlookers around.

It is very easy to reach by, the streets run parallel to this great Avenida 5 by 5, and 2 perpendicular to 2, so easy that it’s almost impossible for me to get lost! 😉

Continuing our walk, we will find well known and famous landmarks of the city, as the Founders Park and the Chapel of Our Lady of Carmen. It is also common to run into a happy group of mariachis, Eagle Warriors, street artists … there is always a surprise!

At its intersection with 12th Street it is where the nightlife area begins concentrating from small bars and lounges in the middle of beach sand to larger premises of several floors where listening to electronic music. One of the areas most liked of this entertaining ride was the Heart Street («Calle Corazón), a charming alley full of lights, cafes and art galleries, an oasis of peace and tranquility amid the bustle of Fifth Avenue.

At Avenue 30, you will see a large concentration of buses and collective, the latter were the great discovery of the trip: it’s minibuses or vans used to transport the premises, for a ridiculous amount of money, are making stops along the federal highway at the entrance of large populations (so we come to Akumal or Tulum by using them…)

As we go along and we’re coming to the intersection with the 34, the Fifth begins to have less hustle and fewer shops, and from 20 to 34 will begin to find you a higher concentration of Italian restaurants, and Argentines (two long-established communities in the area) sandwiched between Mexicans and Americans. Here it is where we find one of the best Mexicans who have never been! (It’s called La Vagabunda, I tell you all the details on the Food Bites!)

Apart from 5th Avenue, Playa has another famous artery 10. Street shops selling local handmade crafts, offers a different picture of the you used to see on Fifth. In addition, it details a number of captive restaurants spread across the city tour.

As you can see, and only with this tour you are going to give a thousand proposals to entertain yourself in the city, but do not forget the other great attraction of Playa del Carmen: the beaches! Paradise, idyllic, Playa del Carmen has a few and all of them impressive. The beaches are all free and open access, but if you want to use chairs and umbrellas, have to rent. In addition there are numerous beach clubs to large hotels for example our hotel was on Fifth Avenue but had one just before Playa Mamitas.

• At 28th Street, Playa Mamitas is known for its electronic parties with famous DJ’s and the legendary Mamitas’s Beach Club: Founded in 2000, today it is one of the most visited places and home to the best festivals music of Playa del Carmen like the famous BPM and Corona Sunset.
  

• At 38th Street, Playa Shangrila is more calm and concentrates some hotels.

• Shangrilla walking past the Beach Club (between the 48th and the sea), there is a small beach called Punta Esmeralda in which there is more local presence than tourists.     

• At 6th Street, is the Fusion Bar Restaurant, which features a small beach where guests can listen to jazz, reggae and rock music while sunbathing. A little later, going to the port in lane 2 (where ferries to Cozumel), the stretch of sand is greater. It is in this area where we would fall sun and the colors of the water and the sky turned pink … an impressive light!   
  

• Finally you have Playacar: here I do not I can give too much info as it is the area where all the big resorts are concentrated and we prefer staying downtown, but situated right port once last known Bar- Restaurant Sr Frog you will find large tracts of white sand.

TULUM

63 kms. from Playa del Carmen (and easily accessible by bus across the road), Tulum is one of the most stunning and photogenic place of the Riviera Maya for the peculiarity of co bine the National Archaeological Park places and the tourquouise waters of the Sea Caribbean, the prevalent image of this area is that of one of its most iconic structures appearing at the edges of the cliff above the beach.

The National Park of Tulum  comprisies 664 hectares and in addition to its archaeological interest, it is also known for its wealth of flora and fauna. In its sea turtle nesting beaches, protected by the Federal Government.

Once visited the ruins, following the road to the coast, is the access to the Playa Santa Fe, where you can make nice walk to the adjacent beaches. Tulum has some beautiful and semi-virgin beaches between hotel areas, an interesting beach is located in the Hotel and Bar «OM».

In addition, it is a small, rustic very interesting town to visit, so it can also be a good place to stay if you are looking for a higher dose of nature and tranquility against the bustle of Playa del Carmen (not lose the recommended hotels and accommodation in Bites)

It is also a good entry point for excursions or visits to Cenotes: just 3.5 kms. Coba address is the Grand Cenote or Skull Cenote, about 5 kms. to the south, the Cenote Cristal and Cenote Escondido.

AKUMAL

Just 37 kms. from Playa del Carmen, this charming village is listed one of the most spectacular beaches in the area. Its name means «place of the turtles» according to the Mayan language, and is a protected nesting beach.

Here the main attraction is to snorkel with the big turtles in their natural habitat, a unique experience for everyone, because on the beach there is a set of snorkel equipment rental for any visitor.

This beach is an area of great attraction for being a bay with clear water, and near freshwater caves and underground rivers, as well as allowing access to one of the largest reef in the world, making it one of the preferred locations for divers. Spend the day at the beach is one of the most recommended plans, in addition to her snorkel and relax able to drink in the pleasant pool bar while enjoying the beauty of the splendid setting around you.

COZUMEL

Cozumel, («Land of the Swallows»), is an island of prominent limestone coral reefs that surround the easily accessed by taking a ferry from Playa del Carmen. Is about 48 kms . long and about 15 kms. wide and has snorkeling and cenotes main activities.

Its crystal clear waters are ideal for diving, snorkeling and all kinds of water sports, and its beaches are perfect for sunbathing and enjoy the tranquility .

1) GO TO A CENOTE

The Cenotes are deposits of spring water with a certain depth (the name means well or pit), and were sacred to the Maya sites.The Riviera Maya is characterized by its credit lot of them and they are a different way to spend a relaxing day. The highlights:     

• Two Eyes Cenote: north of Tulum, its name refers to its two mouths connected by a large cavern. This system of underwater caves is one of the longest in the world and has an impressive cave, the «Cenote Pit» with almost 121 meters deep, and another cave where a large population of bats reside.   
  

• Grand Cenote: just a couple of kilometers from Tulum is one of the best known in the area. Almost perfect circular shape from a large number of stalagmites and stalactites, lots of natural light and about 9 meters deep making it ideal for snorkeling or diving.     

• Skull Cenote: named for its rock formations on the ceiling that make the shape of skull, it is a regular place for first-time divers seeking certification in cave diving.     

• Hidden Cenote: hidden among the vegetation of the forest that has a wooden pier and rocks measuring 1 to 4 meters high, from where you can jump into the water. There are also some underwater caves to explore.

2) VISIT  XCARET or XEL-HA

• Xcaret  is an archaeological theme park located 6 kms . from Playa del Carmen and is considered as the best ecological park in the world. It includes a museum, a tropical aquarium, an aviary, a «Mayan village», a botanical garden, archaeological ruins, pools and beaches as well as over 1 km of underground rivers unfit to dive or snorkel. Entrance to the park costs about $90 and the opening hours are from 8:30h to 21:30h.

• Xel-Ha ,(«Where the water is born»), is an ecological park where river water meets the Caribbean Sea in a large cove, making rather coexist marine and freshwater species. Therefore, it is known as the world’s largest natural aquarium. The place can be visited on foot, by bike or car , can swim , snorkel , visit caves … normal admission costs about $85 and the hours are from 8:30h to 18h.

3) EXPLORE THE INCREDIBLE BEACHES AROUND PLAYA DEL CARMEN

• Paamul Beach: 15 kms. away, is located on a rocky bay surrounded by bungalows and camping waterfront, and is visited for snorkeling on the nearby reef.

• Xcacel and Xcacelito Beach: 44 kms. away, was declared in 1988 as Sea Turtle Sanctuary and from May to October can observe the nesting of green and loggerhead species. Hours access to the beach is from 9 to 18h, from 21h biologists work together to protect the females and turtle eggs. From this beach also part of a natural way to an open cenote.

• Xpuha Beach: 25 kms away, is a beach with a depth of half a meter chosen by divers to dive in the nearby reefs. From here you can access the ecological park where lies the Manatee Cenote and find next Blue Cenote.

4) DISCOVER SIAN KA’AN NATURAL RESERVE:

•  Sian Ka´an’s Biosphere Natural Reserve, «The place where the sky begins», is located 160 kms. from Playa del Carmen and is a natural protected space consisting of 530 hectares of rainforest, lakes, swamps, bays, wells and reefs. It is the natural habitat of various species such as jaguars, pumas, white-tailed deer, crocodiles, spider monkeys and birds among the top you can see animals in their natural environment.

5) VISIT ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MAYAN CIVILIZATIONS:  CHICHÉN ITZÁ

• Located in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula, between Merida and Valladolid, it is the archaeological area of Chichén Itzá, the most impressive and better restored ancient Mayan cities. The tour will take you a full day (the bus trip from Playa del Carmen no less than 3 hours), but truly worth it. We took the opportunity to spend the night there to be more relaxed, and found an amazing hotel that I recommend in Place Bites.

• What about Chichén Itzá? One of the 7 Wonders of the World, founded between the years 325 and 550, the outstanding capital of the Maya area in the Classic period and the beginning of Post Classic and contemporary sacred centers for the Maya. The area is dominated by the Pyramid Kukulcan, a four-sided pyramid which culminates in a rectangular temple and projects over the course of several days around each equinox the shadows of its edges by setting the image of the body of the serpent-god, that passing of time seems to move down and finishing in said head stone at the bottom base of the staircase. The place also has other attractions as the «Sacred Cenote», «El Caracol» or observatory, the «Ball», the «Group of the Thousand Columns» or «Temple of the Warriors». Open from 8h to 17h, free access without guides or tours cost about $3.5

6) ENJOY THE NIGHTLIFE IN PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Another major deals Playa del Carmen is the nightlife, the area is known for its lively march is mainly distributed on 12th Street, where women get in free and benefit from privileges such as invitations or days that is celebrated the «ladies night» with free open bar of rum, tequila and vodka to some hours by location. Throughout 12th Street are :

• Pura Vida, to enjoy the music of Argentina (rock, cumbia , eighties songs).

• La Santanera, a disco – bar with electronic music in an eclectic -tropical atmosphere that is undoubtedly one of the greatest references of the nightlife in Playa

• Hidden and Mezcalinna  bars, to have a drink. a beer, a mezcal.. pointing to local audiences.

• Blue Parrot with shows of fireworks in the sand, it was founded in 1982 by two foreigners and for a time was called the «Gloria» with its atmosphere both night and day.

• Coco Maya Disco, visited mostly by Argentinian from December to April and May to August by Israelites .

Mexican cuisine brings together American and European culinary tradition, but also in the Riviera Maya, combines traditional recipes made with local products from the culture. Its basic ingredient is corn, combined with tomato sauces, peppers, beans, lime, avocado or chocolate known to prepare dishes such as Guacamole, Nachos, quesadillas, enchiladas, fajitas, flautas, burritos, tacos and Tamales. On the table starts with appetizers: Dzotobichay, Tamales castings … it follows with soups or entries: Eggs Motuleños, Yucatan lime soup; squash blossom; corn; avocado and coconut … then the main course: the Mondongo Kabic, enchiladas, tortillas, chilaquiles, tacos, stuffed burritos … and a variety of desserts: fritters Molde or wind, sweet tamales, Water soursop, sweet potatoes, Caramel, Ate quince, hearty or Flags, coffee Flan, sweet Zapote, Chongos Zamorano, guavas in syrup, chastised and amaranth biscuits … All accompanied by a good Tequila Reposado as a digestive.

PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Playa del Carmen has a wide range of places to eat. Our hotel was all inclusive and we could not enjoy of many of them, so the next time we visit Playa we will consider it. Still, we could try almost all this that I comment, all awesome!

• La Vagabunda, «Mexican Food with a Twist», at 26th Street North Gonzalo Guerrero, is one of my favorites. An amazing place very close to the beach where you dine under a palapa and enjoy the wonders of the most authentic Home Made Mexican cuisine. Fajitas, guacamole, quesadilla, tacos, nachos … it will cost you to decide and choose, so surely you will repeat. Also ask to accompany the feast with their mint and lemon water or one of their delicious Margaritas served in typical Mexican glasses!

• Aldea Corazón is a very special restaurant in Playa. Romantic and cozy, with tables scattered outdoors surrounded by a tropical garden and dishes updated Mexican cuisine, is an oasis in the middle of Fifth Avenue where the main attraction is the relaxing and magic atmosphere that recreates the best of this Mexico area: waterfalls, dream catchers, vines, cenotes and tropical trees. But not only the environment is important, you will taste delicious handmade tortillas, burnt cheese, chicken pot pie, and a very good selection of wines and tequilas.

• Almirante Pech , on 5th Avenue and 32nd Street, is a restaurant that looks like a tropical Mexican tavern where Mexican cuisine served with good Yucatecan nods to tradition. It has a very comprehensive cocktail menu, with the bonus that the bartender to personalize and create your own drink, plus music often has live DJs .

• La Casa del Agua, stands in the middle of 5th Avenue for its spectacular facade. If you pass within the interior does not disappoint either: not only for its restaurant, but also because they find the bistro La Malaguena and a pleasant terrace with views very promising. The restaurant offers regional Mexican cuisine and international dishes with a varied menu where you can taste Italian preparations, high French cuisine, Swiss sauces and even Mediterranean diet cuisine.

• La Cueva del Chango, is a place surrounded by vegetation that makes you feel almost like in the middle of the jungle. A place recommended at any time of the day (from breakfast to dinner), which also serve vegetarian and vegan dishes. The best practice: the chilaquiles with salsa Morita, the enchilladas and muffins for breakfast. On 38th Street between 5th Avenue North and Mar Col. Zazil Ha.

• Passion by Martin Berasategui. Although not entered this restaurant, I wanted to mention it being of our famous Spanish Chef 7 Michelin stars. A fusion of Basque cuisine with Mexico within the Hotel Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla ( 5th Avenue corner of 112th Street). Offers a 7 course tasting menu with wine pairing and its price is high

• Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraíso, in Playa Paraiso (Chetumal- P. Juarez Road, Km 309, Playa Paraiso) , they say it is just about the best all-inclusive in the Riviera Maya and is the winner establishment of Mexico ‘s Traveller’s Choice Award in 2014 .

• Luxury Bahía Principe Sian Ka’An Don Pablo Collection,in Akumal (Chetumal – Cancún Road, Km 250), a luxury hotel for adults only in the heart of the Mayan jungle.

Boutique and Charming Hotels:

• Cabanas la Luna, in Tulum (Tulum- Boca Paila Road, Km . 6.5) , located in one of the most beautiful beaches of Tulum where true luxury is not the grandeur of the building of the resort, but have a private cabana on the beach a few meters from the Caribbean sea. With a total of 10 cabins including 4 waterfront, from $150.

• Alaya Tulum by Ahau, in Tulum (Tulum -Boca Paila Road, Km. 7.5), a resort based on the principles of Mother Nature located in a hidden between the forest and the beach. It offers yoga retreats, eco – workshops, shamanic circles .. an oasis of peace and spirituality in beachfront cottages with prices starting from $92 .

• Hotel Lunata, in Playa del Carmen (5th . Avenue s/n) for €94 a night, it is attentive to every detail in full 5th Avenue and just one block from the beach. Small, cozy and nicely decorated, three stars and a sure hit.

• La Pasión Hotel Boutique, in Playa del Carmen (10th Street, between Avenue 15 and Avenue 20), an outstanding hotel near the Mamitas Beach and an ideal alternative to all inclusive: quiet, comfortable, with great privacy, its own beach club, and crowd small details with customers … ideal. And all for 89€ the night.

• Hacienda Chichén Resort, right in the Chichén Itzá area (Merida -Puerto Juarez Road,Km . 120, Chichen Itza Hotel Zone), is a very special place with a privileged location and highly recommended to rest the visit to the ruins. Surrounded by lush vegetation,the different rooms are divided into small villas in ecodesign and colonial style. Its price, about 150€ per night.

Prepare your suitcase for the Riviera Maya is easy: think of heat and scantily clad throughout the day. If you think to make excursions to the Mayan ruins or nature park some wear comfortable clothes and do not forget some floaty dress for the evening. During my trip, I do not know why, I wanted to mix white clotes with colorfully accesories, Mexico encourages mixing cheerful and bright colors!I hope you like the ideas for this week :

And just for today, the truth is that this little summer parenthesis has been a good deal to get back to the winter of Madrid! I hope that if any of you are thinking this destination, you have found it useful and interesting.
