Tenía ganas de empezar esta nueva sección del blog llamada Love: las cosas que me más me gustan, «flechazos»… que además permitan explorar otras temáticas más allá de los viajes y evolucionar los contenidos de TrippingBites. Poco a poco os iré mostrando un poco más de mi pequeño mundo a través de esta nueva plataforma 🙂

A veces me pregunto si mi pasión por los viajes empezó gracias al cine… recuerdo ver La Historia Interminable y desear irme lejos con Atreyu a Fantasía, ver Indiana Jones y querer dedicarme a ese «trabajo» increíble en el que un día estabas en Egipto y al día siguiente en plena selva, o ver Los Goonies y soñar con descubrir nuevos mundos subterráneos bajo la ciudad. Cualquiera de James Bond conseguía un efecto redondo: poder disfrutar de muchos lugares increíbles en cada entrega, y así poco a poco, película a película, iban aumentando mis ganas de descubrir nuevos destinos y de irme cada vez más lejos!

Así que el post de esta semana me encanta porque mezcla dos de mis grandes pasiones: el cine y los viajes. Las películas tienen la capacidad de captar como nunca los paisajes, los rincones y la esencia de cada destino, y muchas de ellas han sido las que han puesto la primera semilla que finalmente me ha llevado a muchos de los lugares que he visitado.

Aquí os muestro las 15 películas que más me han influido a viajar y cuáles de sus escenarios han sido los principales responsables… Viajaremos a Bali, Bombay, Roma, Las Cataratas de Iguazú, la Costa Azul, Kenya, Utah, Nueva Zelanda, Kioto, Egipto, las islas Phi Phi en Tailandia, las Montañas Rocosas en Canadá, Formentera, Camboya, La Toscana, Vietnam  y Sicilia… no os lo perdáis!!

 

 

Eat, Pray, Love. (EEUU. Ryan Murphy, 2010)

• El 16 de Febrero de 2006, Elizabeth Gilbert publica el libro «Eat, Pray Love», que dará origen a la película y que desvela el viaje en el que una mujer divorciada decide empezar de nuevo con su vida realizando tres etapas que se corresponden también con su búsqueda interior: Roma, Bombay y finalmente Bali.

• Esta película es probablemente la máxima responsable de que cogiese las maletas y finalmente me decidiese a hacer el mejor viaje que he hecho nunca: Bali, gracias a los espectaculares planos de los arrozales de Ubud y a escenas como éstas:

• ¿Sabéis que esta increíble casa es en realidad un hotel? Como Shambhala Estate es un lugar mágico en Gianyar, a unos 10 kilómetros de Ubud, con vistas privilegiadas de Begawan Village. Para hacer del viaje una experiencia realmente única.

• Pero no solo Bali, el film muestra planos alucinantes de Roma y de Bombay, así como lugares con gran encanto como la desvencijada casa en la que se alojaba la protagonista en Via dei Portoghesi, la Antica Pizzeria da Michelle en Nápoles o  el Ashram en el que meditaba situado a unas dos horas de Nueva Delhi.

 

 

 

The Mission. (Reino Unido. Roland Joffé, 1986) 

• Bajo la trama en la que los misioneros jesuitas intentan evangelizar a los indios durante la época del Tratado de Madrid, hay dos elementos que logran eclipsar a Robert de Niro y Jeremy Irons: la grandiosa banda sonora de Ennio Morricone y el espectacular telón de fondo con las Cataratas de Iguazú (situadas entre Brasil, Paraguay y Argentina):

• Una de las escenas más memorables tiene lugar cuando miembros guaraníes que viven en las Cataratas atan a un sacerdote en una cruz y lo arrojan hacia su muerte.

• Se encuentran situadas dentro del Parque Nacional de las Cataratas de Iguazú, y han sido consideradas una de las Siete Maravillas Naturales del Planeta. Para visitarlas, debemos desembarcar en la isla San Martín, un imponente peñón incrustado en el centro de los saltos más importantes. Entre la espuma del agua y ensordecedor sonido de la catarata podremos sentirnos en mitad de la época de los exploradores y la conquista de América.

• En plenas cataratas, con unas vistas indescriptibles, se encuentra el lujoso Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, en Foz de Iguazú. Es el único hotel que existe dentro del Parque Nacional y permite un acceso exclusivo a sus clientes a las horas en las que el parque está cerrado a los turistas, en dos momentos inolvidables como son el amanecer o el atardecer.

 

 

 

To catch a Thief (E.E.U.U., Alfred Hitchcock, 1955)

• Un Óscar a la mejor fotografía revela las impactantes imágenes de la Costa Azul Francesa como romántico escenario para Grace Kelly (quien conoció durante el rodaje al que fuese después su marido, Rainiero de Mónaco), y Cary Grant.

• La pelicula muestra las románticas vistas que se obtienen desde la famosa carretera panorámica Grande Corniche, a 500 metros sobre la costa, que se extiende entre las montañas de Menton y Niza. Desde el mirador los protagonistas actúan en la famosa escena del picnic, y Mónaco se vislumbra a lo lejos. Más que recomendable este mítico trayecto por esta pintoresca carretera, no sólo por las espectaculares vistas que aparecen en el film, sino también para descubrir encantadores pueblecitos medievales como Èze o La Turbie, (curiosamente cerca de éste último se produjo el accidente mortal de la Princesa muchos años después)

• Otro de los lugares alucinantes de la película es el trayecto que realiza Cary Grant mientras es perseguido por la policía, desde la villa en la que vive recluido en Saint-Jeannet al resguardo de los Alpes Marítimos hasta los pueblos de Le Bar sur Loup y Tourrettes sur Loup.

• En Cannes, se encuentra el famoso hotel en el que se aloja el personaje de Grace Kelly junto a su madre y sus ostentosas joyas: el Intercontinental Carlton Cannes

 

 

 

 

Thelma & Louise (E.E.U.U. Ridley Scott, 1991)

• Pues sí, desde 1991 que ví la escena final de esta película con las inconmensurables Susan Sarandon y Geena Davis en aquel coche, el Dead Horse Point State Park está en mi lista de lugares por visitar. Se suele hablar del Gran Cañón del Colorado como enclave del salto al vacío del Ford Thunderbill azul del 66, pero en realidad fue en este parque en el que se rodó el mítico final.

• El Dead Horse Point State Park, en Utah, es el punto en el que el río Colorado cambia de dirección haciendo un giro de 180º a más de 500 metros de profundidad. Lo llaman cuello de cisne, “Gooseneck”, y es un lugar sobrecogedor en el que millones de años de actividad geológica quedan resumidos en un solo meandro del río Colorado. Con unas vistas más dramáticas e inolvidables del Río Colorado y del Parque Nacional de Canyonland, una de mis principales misiones es poder ver los mil matices de color rojo y admirar ese paisaje árido y lunar al atardecer: dicen que la panorámica te deja sin respiración.

• Este lugar se encuentra en los límites del parque nacional de Canyonlands, y consiste en una península, una extensión de tierra rodeada de escarpados acantilados y que se conecta a otros espacios mayores por una estrecha franja de tierra. Dice una leyenda que en el pasado este sitio fue utilizado como corral para los caballos salvajes que vagaban por la meseta siendo los acantilados su límite natural, pero en un descuido de los cowboys que los vigilaban, una manada entera quedara sin agua y a la vuelta se encontraron todos los corceles muertos. Esto fue lo que dio nombre a la zona. En la península hay varios miradores y un centro de visitantes abierto todo el año, además de áreas de pícnic e instalaciones para acampar (os imagináis acampar en este impresionante lugar?!).

 

 

 

Out of Africa. (E.E.U.U. Sydney Pollack, 1985)

• ¿Quién puede olvidar esas puestas de sol, a Robert Redford y Merryl Streep de picnic con la inmensa sabana africana de fondo? Allá por 1985, Kenya (por aquel entonces una colonia británica) aparecía en el film salvaje, exótica y arrebatadora. Los parques naturales de África Oriental y los encuentros con la fauna salvaje son el mejor de los escenarios para vivir un safari en estado puro con en esta película basada en la novela autobiográfica de Isak Dinesen.

• En las colinas de Ngong, a poca distancia de Nairobi, se ubica la granja que fue hogar de la protagonista y que hoy en día mantiene el porche que aparece en la película y se ha convertido en uno de los museos más visitados de Kenya.

• Lo que no nos debemos perder es la experiencia de un safari,  ya sea por la Reserva Nacional de Shaba, en la que se rodaron muchas de las escenas de la película, en el Parque Nacional de Tsavo en el que se estrella la avioneta de Finch Hatton, o el Masai Mara, en cuyos límites se encuentra la espectacular Sierra de Esoit Oloololo en la que los protagonistas sobrevuelan en avioneta observando las grandes concentraciones de fauna.

• El tren de vapor utilizado en la película todavía se conserva en el Museo del Ferrocarril de Nairobi, y también se mantienen hoteles que aparecen cuando los personajes van a realizar algunos de sus safaris, como el Mount Kenya Safari Club,  ubicado en la cima más alta de Kenya, para vivir una experiencia única en este salvaje enclave de película.

 

 

 

 Indochine (France. Régis Wargnier, 1992)

• El ambiente tropical y sensual de Indochina se revive en esta película en la que la protagonista, Catherine Deneuve, acaba recorriendo Vietnam de punta a punta, con una apabullante presencia de la Bahía de Ha Long: una maravilla natural salpicada de unas 3.000 islas de formas caprichosas que crean un mundo irreal de roca y agua.

• En Saigón, o Ciudad de Ho Chi Min, el personaje de Elaine asistía a las subastas y hacía vida social, o tomaba una bebida en la terraza del Hotel Intercontinental en el bulevard Le Loi, observando la vida pasar.

• En Can Tho, a lo largo del delta del Mekong (uno de los mayores arrozales del Mundo), se puede observar perfectamente el ambiente rural que aparece en la película. Y sus canales están surcados por barcas empujadas a remo por mujeres.

• Por la mañana, el mercado flotante de Phung Hiep bulle con cientos de piraguas llenas de mercancías.

• El camino hacia la Bahía de Ha Long, escenario decisivo de la película, pasa por Hanoi, donde los anchos bulevares y mansiones coloniales aportan un curioso toque europeo que contrasta con el trazado de la vieja ciudad amurallada del Siglo XV.

• Vietnam es un viaje imperdible en el que disfrutar de los más de 500 templos de Ho Chi Min (Saigón), de las Pagodas de Giac lam, Vinh Nghiem y la de las Tortugas, del barrio chino de Cholon o del recorrido de al menos dos días a lo largo del Delta del Mekong. Podréis visitar Hoi An y su pagoda dedicada a la Diosa del Mar, o el puente cubierto japonés del Siglo XVI. En Hûe, la Ciudadela con la Ciudad Prohibida, la pagoda Tien Mu y las tumbas de los Emperadores. Y en Hanoi, las callejuelas de la Ciudad Vieja y las villas francesas. El plato fuerte del viaje, la Bahía de Halong, («dragón ardiente»): con sus increíbles vistas al amanecer y los característicos jirones de niebla entre las rocas, navegando entre la bruma y el silencio de este paisaje misterioso en busca del dragón mitológico.

 

 

 

 

The Lord of the Rings. (E.E.U.U. Peter Jakson, 2001)

• Un remoto lugar llamado Nueva Zelanda es el escenario para recrear la fantasía de J.R.R. Tolkien casi como sacada literalmente de sus libros. Todos sus diferentes mundos tienen cabida dentro de la diversidad natural y la enorme belleza de este país, que me parece uno de los más completos para visitar: aventura, relax, naturaleza, cultura…

• La trilogía muestra enclaves maravillosos de la Isla Norte, como Mordor en el Parque Nacional de Tongariro, Hobbitton y la Comarca en el pueblo de Waikato de Matamata, Isengard y Rivendell en el Parque Harcourt y Wellington, y de la Isla Sur, como Edoras en las llanuras de Canterbury, el Vado de Brunein en los Lagos del Sur, los Argonah en el Río Kawarau o el Bosque de Fangorn, en Takaro Road, cerca de Te Anau.
  

• Tras la fama de las películas, se realizan tours, circuitos y rutas para visitar todos estos escenarios naturales, más info en Nueva Zelanda Tours

 

 

 

Memoirs of a Geisha (Tokio. Rob Marshall, 2005) 

• Dudaba entre «Lost in Translation» y «Memoirs of a Geisha» para hablaros de Japón, y finalmente he escogido la segunda porque la visión de Tokio que aporta «Lost in Translation» me parecía más agobiante y menos apetecible (a pesar de ser idónea para ambientar la trama)

• «Memorias de una Geisha» es una película plástica, artística, estética donde las haya, que además de generar una gran controversia en la época, se llevó entre otros el Óscar al «Mejor logro en dirección de Arte» y a la «Cinematografía». Y no me extraña: las escenas están cuidadísimas en la fotografía y Japón aparece irresistible, espectacular en sus diferentes localizaciones.

• El paseo por Kioto muestra algunos de los monumentos y entornos más conocidos de la ciudad como el templo Budista Kiyomizu-dera o Templo del Agua Pura, y el de Yoshmine.

• Las aguas del santuario sintoísta Heian Jingu, en el centro de Kioto, sirvieron para representar el estado de ánimo de Sayuri en una de las secuencias finales de la película y el mágico Fushimi Inari, en el que kilómetros de torii (arcos) de color anaranjado remontan las colinas de la ciudad, constituyó el telón de fondo ideal para la escena de la transformación de la joven Chiyo.

• La fotografía principal se completó en una remota región productora de té y mandarinas cercana a la ciudad de Kawane, y el broche de oro fue la grabación del paso de una locomotora por un viejo puente sobre el río Ohi. El resultado: una película de gran belleza y una visión de Japón que no se queda corta, os entrarán ganas de escaparos allí en cuanto la veáis!

 

 

 

Death on the Nile (E.E.U.U. John Guillermin, 1978)

• Agatha Christie, además de una excelente escritora de novelas basadas en crímenes y asesinatos, fue una incansable viajera. Dicen que en su día viajó hasta Asuan (Egipto) y allí se inspiró para escribir su novela Muerte en el Nilo (1937) entre los muros del Hotel Old Cataract (hoy en día Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan), ubicado al final del valle del Nilo y en el comienzo del gran desierto nubio. El hotel conserva todo su encanto colonial y de gran lujo, y cuenta con la impresionante terraza al borde del Nilo, desde la que se contempla una de las puestas de sol más bellas del mundo, con la isla Elefantina y el mausoleo del Aga Khan en el horizonte. Además, de uno de los embarcaderos del hotel parte el crucero «Karnak” de la película.

• El film muestra lugares emblemáticos como las pirámides de Giza o el templo de Karnak a bordo del lujoso crucero donde se desarolla la historia.

 

 

 

 

Legends of the Fall (E.E.U.U. Edward Zwick, 1995)

• Las Montañas Rocosas (Rockie Mountains, como se las conoce cariñosamente),  cone titulen la última frontera americana y, desde su lado canadiense, son el decorado de esta historia de amor. Simbolizan la naturaleza en su estado más salvaje y el espíritu de los exploradores colonos europeos que asentaron sus cimientos en el norte del continente americano.

• El escenario es inmejorable: hielo, piedra, cumbres nevadas, glaciares, ríos y lagos de color tuquesa alrededor de los que se ambienta la historia.

• El Maligne es uno de los lagos del Parque Nacional de Banff, que junto a los de Louise, Moraine, Emerald y Minnewanka, aparecen el el film.

• El rancho que aparece se asienta el pie de una impresionante cordillera y junto al Río Ghost, y es la puerta de acceso a la esencia de las Montañas Rocosas Canadienses. Junto al Parque Nacional de Banff (santuario del osos grizzly), se encuentran el de Jasper al Norte, el de Yodo al Oeste y el de Kootenay al Sur, todo el conjunto ha sido declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO.

• Si viendo la peli os decidís, a mediados de Agosto se celebra el Festival del Barco del Dragón en el Lago Minnewanka en el que piraguas recubiertas de dragones chinos se desplazan por el lago impulsadas por los aficionados. Y entre finales de Octubre y principios de Noviembre podréis ver el Festival de CIne de Montaña.

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Beach (E.E.U.U. Danny Boyle, 2000)  

• Si Tailandia es uno de tus lugares preferidos del Mundo y además ves esta película, asúmelo: vas a terminar como yo cogiendo un barco o un catamarán y pisando Maya Bay, en Phi Phi Ley, una de las paradisiacas islas Phi Phi perdidas en el Mar de Andaman.

• La peli no es de las mejores que puedas ver, pero solo con ver las escenas de esta maravilla natural que es Maya Bay darás tu tiempo por amortizado. Además, el inicio se desarrolla en una caótica Bangkok y la aventura sigue en Ao Nang Beach, que no están tampoco nada mal.

• Maya Bay es una reserva natural en la que no hay posibilidad de alojamiento, solo un chiringuito para abastecer a los turistas. Pero no os preocupéis, en la vecina Phi Phi Don encontraréis todo tipo de lugares en los que poder pernoctar, mi preferido es Phi Phi The Beach Resort.

• Lo mas impresionante de este paisaje son las formaciones rocosas que salen del agua y cuyo verdor contrasta con las aguas cristalinas que rodean la bahía, así como todo el área. Las formaciones continúan bajo el mar hasta los 30 metros de profundidad, y en vez de vegetación están cubiertas por corales de colores púrpura, blanco y amarillo.

 

 

 

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (E.E.U.U. Simon West, 2001)

• Angkor Wat, en Camboya, es una de mis asignaturas pendientes, aunque sé que la voy a aprobar pronto 🙂 En esta película, este lugar se muestra con todo su esplendor tanto desde fuera como recreando sus rincones más profundos, a través de la figura de Lara Croft.

• Para mí es uno de los lugares más bellos del planeta, lleno de historia, de cultura y de magnetismo. Y el equipo de la pelicula no tuvo ninguna duda: ¿para qué recrear un escenario en los platós contando con semejante «plató» natural escondido en la selva y abrazado por las raíces de los gigantescos árboles?

• La Ciudad de Angkor refleja en sus edificios la influencia de la arquitectura y creencias religiosas traídas a través del comercio de la India, y si bien solo quedan en pie una parte de las construcciones originales como la Terraza de los Elefantes, una base de piedra ante la fachada del Palacio Real sustentada por bajorrelieves de escenas de caza con elefantes, merece bien la pena.

• Al entrar, la bienvenida nos las dan las enigmáticas figuras gigantes de los rostros de Buda que adronan las torres del Templo Bayon.

• Después, la película nos muestra el templo Ta-Phrom, (más conocido como «El Templo de Lara Croft»), de más de 900 años de antiguedad. Arropado por los árboles, aporta una imagen delicada y una atmósfera romántica, y además es el único templo-monasterio conservado en el mismo estado en que lo encontraron los arqueólogos franceses en el Siglo XIX.

•  La Ciudad Real de Angkor Thom fue construida a lo largo del río Siem Reap y va a parar al lago Tonle Sap, en el Sur. Si la visitáis, id al Museo Nacional de Angkor en el centro de la ciudad en cuya tienda se ponen a la venta artesanías típicas camboyanas y publicaciones actuales sobre Angkor y Camboya.

 

 

Lucía y el sexo. (España. Julio Médem. 2001)

• La isla paradisiaca de Formentera luce en todo su esplendor natural en esta película de Julio Médem con Paz Vega y Tristán Ulloa como protagonistas.

• Lo mejor: sus playas transparentes y de arena blanca que rivalizan con las del Caribe. En una de ellas, Illetes, se rodó gran parte de la película. Situadas en un entorno privilegiado en el punto más al norte de la isla, son las más visitadas por los turistas.

• La imagen más cococida de la película es la de Lucía recorriendo la isla en moto. Es una de las mejores maneras de recorrer Formentera. También puedes en bicicleta, es más económico y ecológico, además, ¡te pondrás en forma! Caminando por la playa de ses Illetes hasta la punta, se llega a la isla de S’Espalmador, donde Lucía se da un baño de barro con su compañero de albergue, Carlos. Este lodazal de pozas con sustancias en estado de putrefacción lleva multas de hasta 1000€, así que os desaconsejo que intentéis imitar a los protagonistas!

• Y, finalmente, tal y como aparece en la película, debéis is al Faro de Es Cap de Barbaria, un lugar especial y de los más visitados en Formentera. El camino desde Sant Francesc de Formentera esta asfaltado y, a media que se va avanzado por él, van desapareciendo los bosques de pino y las casas típicas de la isla, permitiéndose vistas espectaculares, sobre todo las de las puestas de sol.

 

• A pocos metros se encuentra la cova foradada (la cueva agujereada), una gruta a la que se accede a través de un «agujero» en el suelo. En la isla existen decenas cuevas debido a la composición del terreno, con grutas y galerías subterráneas. A través de una pequeña gruta por el interior de esta cueva, llegamos a un increíble balcón al mar, al que Lucía también llega en la película.

• Y por último, una de las escenas más bonitas es el «baño» nocturno a la luz de la luna de Tristán Ulloa y Najwa Nimri. ¡No os lo podéis perder!

• Además de todas estas paradas, la isla ofrece otras mil posibilidades: actividades naúticas, buceo, mercadillos hippies, salidas de marcha, puestas de sol.. os animo a disfrutarla porque merece la pena!

 

 

 

Under the Tuscan Sun (E.E.U.U. Audrey Wells, 2004)

•  Otro ejemplo de película en la que no destaca especialmente la trama o el guión y en la que el protagonismo indiscutible se lo lleva el entorno: la Toscana en su estado más puro, destacando la gran belleza de sus localizaciones

• El largometraje narra el cambio de vida de una joven divorciada norteamericana que abandona todo su mundo cuando va de viaje turístico por la Toscana y se enamora perdidamente de esta tierra como nos pudiera pasar a cualquiera de nosotros que llega allí por primera vez.

• Las localizaciones empezaron sobre el papel con libros y guías de Italia y la Toscana, pero el verdadero trabajo se realizó “sobre el terreno”, llevando al equipo de rodaje a descubrir lugares de una belleza inigualable en unos paisajes de una perfección casi irreal. Como por ejemplo Cortona, donde se desarrolla la mayor parte de la película y donde la protagonista reconstruye su vida y su casa – Bramasole – de manera paralela.

 

• Otro lugar destaca le de la película es Montepulciano,  con su preciosa piazza, lugar ideal para arropar el Festival del lanzamiento de banderas que aparece en el film.

• Roma y Positano son otras localizaciones que aparecen en la historia, pero la verdadera protagonista es la Toscana, un lugar obligatorio para todos los trippers por su encanto único y su incomparable belleza.

 

 

 

 

The Godfather (E.E.U.U. Francis Ford Coppola, 1972)

• Pensar en Sicilia y asociar inmediatamente la Mafia es prácticamente lo mismo desde el estreno de esta obra maestra de Francis Ford Coppola. Sicilia es una de las islas más genuinas de la costa italiana y estar en ella es pensar en la Cosa Nostra, especialmente si visitas el pueblo de Corleone del que recibió el apellido el patriarca Don Vito (interpretado magistralmente por Marlon Brando)

• Corleone aparecía como un punto clave en el rodaje, pero dado que el pueblo estaba demasiado desarollado como para poder ambientar la rústica Sicilia de la época, se escogieron otras poblaciones como Savoca y Forza d’Agró. En ellas aprecía el famoso Bar Vitelli en el que Michael se presenta al padre de su futura mujer Apollonia.

• Alguna de las panorámicas que aparecen el el film en Corleone, en realidad pertenecen a la localidad de Motta Camastra, y la estación de tren no es la de Bagheria, sino la de la turística ciudad de Taormina.

• Uno de los momentos cúlmen de la trilogía, cuando Michael evita las balas de un sicario que fialmente impactan en su su hija Mary, se produce en la escalinata del Teatro Massimo de Palermo, una de las ciudades más «canallas» de la isla en la que existe un casco histórico lleno de mercados, campanarios barrocos, palacios normandos y mansiones decadentes.

• Sicilia es uno de los viajes más entretenidos y completos que he realizado y del que ya escribiré más adelante un post en condiciones, si decidís ir no os perdáis Palermo y Catania, la preciosa Taormina, Noto y Ragusa, haced una visita al Etna y terminad la travesía relajándoos en las Islas Eolias: Lípari, Alicudi, Filicudi, Estrómboli, Vulcano y Salina.

I really wanted to start this new blog section called Love: the things I like, «crushes»… also allow further explore other themes of travel and evolve TrippingBites contents. Gradually I will be showing a little more of my little world through this new platform 🙂

Sometimes I wonder if my wanderlust began thanks to the cinema … I remember watching The Neverending Story and want to go away with Atreyu to Fantasia, see Indiana Jones and want to devote myself to the incredible «job» that one day you were in Egypt and the next day in the jungle, or watch The Goonies and dream of discovering new worlds underground beneath the city. Any film of James Bond getting a round effect: to enjoy many amazing places in each delivery, and little by little, film to film, were increasing my desire to discover new destinations and go ever further!

So the post this week mixes two of my great passions: cinema and travel.

The films have the ability to grasp like never landscapes, places and essence of each destination, and many have been those that have laid the seed that eventually led me to many of the places we visited.

Here I show the 15 films that have influenced me most to travel and what their environments are primarily responsible … travel to Bali, Bombay, Rome, Iguazu Falls, the Blue Coast, Kenya, Utah, New Zealand, Kyoto, Egypt, Phi Phi islands in Thailand, the Rocky Mountains in Canada, Formentera, Cambodia, Tuscany, Vietnam and Sicily... do not miss it !!

 

 

Eat, Pray, Love. (EEUU. Ryan Murphy, 2010)

• On February 16th, 2006, Elizabeth Gilbert publishes the book «Eat , Pray Love», which results in the film and reveals the journey that a divorced woman decides to start her life again making three stages also correspond with its internal search : Rome, Bombay, and finally Bali.    
  

• This film is probably the maximum responsible for packing and I finally decided to make the best trip I’ve ever done: Bali, thanks to the spectacular shots of Ubud rice fields and to scenes like these:

• Did you know that this incredible home is actually a hotel? Como Shambhala Estate is a magical place in Gianyar, about 10 kilometers from Ubud, with spectacular views of Begawan Village. To make the trip a truly unique experience.

• But not only Bali, the film shows amazing shots of Rome, Naples and Mumbai as well as places with great charm as the dilapidated house in which the protagonist was staying in Via de Portoghesi, l’Antica Pizzeria da Michele in Naples, or the Ashram in which he meditated located about two hours from New Delhi.

 

 

The Mission. (United Kingdom. Roland Joffé, 1986) 

• Under the frame in which the Jesuit missionaries try to evangelize the Indians during the time of the Treaty of Madrid, two elements that manage to outshine Robert de Niro and Jeremy Irons: the great soundtrack by Ennio Morricone and the spectacular backdrop with Iguazu Falls (located between Brazil , Paraguay and Argentina):
  

• One of the most memorable scenes of the film takes place when members Guarani living in Falls tie a priest to a cross and thrown to his death.  
  

• They are located within the National Park of the Iguazu Falls, and have been considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. To catch a Thief (E.E.U.U., Alfred Hitchcock, 1955)

• An Oscar for best picture reveals the shocking images from the French Riviera and romantic setting for Grace Kelly (who met while filming that was after her husband, Prince Rainier of Monaco), and Cary Grant.    

• The film shows the romantic views obtained from the famous panoramic road Grande Corniche, 500 meters above the sea, lying between the mountains of Menton and Nice. From the viewpoint actors act in the famous picnic scene, and Monaco is seen in the distance. Highly recommended this mythical journey through this scenic road, not only for the spectacular views that appear in the film, but also to discover charming medieval villages such as Éze and La Turbie, (the latter curiously near fatal accident it occurred Princess many years later)

• Another amazing place of the film is the journey that makes Cary Grant while being chased by the police, from the village where he lives held in Saint- Jeannet protected from the Alps Maritimes to the villages of Le Bar sur Loup and Tourrettes sur Loup.

• In Cannes is located he famous hotel is in the character of Grace Kelly stays with his mother and his ostentatious jewels: the Intercontinental Carlton Cannes

 

 

Thelma & Louise (E.E.U.U. Ridley Scott, 1991)

• Yes, in 1991 I saw the final scene of this film with the immeasurable Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in that car, the Dead Horse Point State Park is on my list of places to visit. People often speak of the Grand Canyon as enclave where the 66 blue Ford Thunderbill leaps, but actually was in this park that mythical final shot.

• The Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah, is the point where the Colorado River changes direction by a 180 to over 500 meters deep. They call it «Gooseneck» and is a breathtaking place where millions of years of geological activity are summarized in a single loop of the river Colorado. With a more dramatic and unforgettable views of Colorado River and Canyonland National Park, one of my main tasks it is to see views thousand shades of red and admire the arid moonscape at sunset : say the panoramic leaves you breathless .

• This amazing place is located on the edge of Canyonlands National Park , and consists of a peninsula , an area of ​​land surrounded by rugged cliffs and connecting to other major areas by a narrow strip of land. A legend says that in the past, this site was used as a corral for wild horses that roamed the plateau being the cliffs its natural limit, but in a negligence of the cowboys who watched, a whole herd ran out of water and around it They found all the dead horses . This was what gave the area its name. On the peninsula there are various viewpoints and a visitor center open all year, plus picnic areas and camping facilities (csn you imagine camping in this awesome place ?! )

 

 

 

Out of Africa. (E.E.U.U. Sydney Pollack, 1985)

• Who can forget those sunsets, Robert Redford and Merryl Streep picnic with the vast African savannah background ? Back in 1985, Kenya (then a British colony ) appeared in the wild, exotic and captivating film. The natural parks of East Africa and encounters with wildlife are the best scenario to live pure safari with in this film based on the autobiographical novel by Isak Dinesen.   
  

• In the Ngong Hills, not far from Nairobi, the farm was home to the protagonist and today remains the porch that appears in the film and has become one of the most visited museums in Kenya is located.

• What we should not miss is the experience of a safari, either by Shaba National Reserve, which is rodarn many scenes of the film, in the Tsavo National Park in which the plane crashes Finch Hatton, or Masai Mara, whose boundary is the spectacular Mountain Range of Esoit Oloololo, where the protagonists watch large concentrations of animal from the airplane.   

• The steam train used in the film is still preserved in the Nairobi Railway Museum, and hotels are also kept appearing when the star will perform some of their safaris, as the Mount Kenya Safari Club,  located on the highest peak in Kenya, for a unique experience in this wild film enclave
  

 

 Indochine (France. Régis Wargnier, 1992)

• The tropical and sensual atmosphere of Indochina is relived in this movie in which the protagonist, Catherine Deneuve, just touring Vietnam from end to end, with an overwhelming presence of Ha Long Bay, a natural wonder dotted with 3,000 islands forms capricious creating an unreal world of rock and water.

• In Saigon, or Ho Chi Min, the character of Elaine attended the auction and made social life, or take a drink on the terrace of the Hotel Intercontinental in Le Loi Boulevard, watching life go by.  

• In Can Tho, along the Mekong Delta (one of the largest rice fields in the world) , you can perfectly see the rural atmosphere in the film . And their channels are crossed by rowing boats pushed by women.

• In the morning, the Phung Hiep floating market bustles with hundreds of canoes filled with goods.   
  

• The road to Ha Long Bay, decisive stage of the film passes through Hanoi, where wide boulevards and colonial mansions provide a curious European touch that contrasts with the layout of the old walled city of the fifteenth century.    

• Vietnam is an unforgettable journey that enjoy more than 500 temples in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the Giac Lam, Vinh Nghiem and Turtle Pagodas, the Chinese district of Cholon or travel at least two days along the Mekong Delta. You can visit Hoi An and its pagoda dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea, or the covered Japanese XVI bridge of XVI century. In Hue, the Citadel with the Forbidden City, the Tien Mu Pagoda and the tombs of the emperors. In Hanoi, the narrow streets of the Old City and the French villas. The highlight of the trip, Halong Bay («fiery dragon») with its incredible views of the sunrise with the characteristic wisps of fog among the rocks, sailing through the mist and the silence of this mysterious landscape in search of the mythical dragon .

 

The Lord of the Rings. (E.E.U.U. Peter Jakson, 2001)

• A remote place called New Zealand is the stage to recreate the fantasy of J.R.R. Tolkien almost like something out of his books. All scenarios have no place within the natural diversity and beauty of this huge country, which I think is one of the most complete to visit : adventure, relaxation, nature, culture …
  

• The trilogy shows wonderful enclaves of the North Island, as Mordor in Tongariro National Park, Hobbitton in the Waikato town of Matamata, Isengard and Rivendell at Harcourt Park and Wellington and the South Island, as in Edoras the Canterbury Plain, the Ford of Brunein in Southern Lakes, the Argonah in the Kawarau River or Fangorn Forest in Takaro Road, near Te Anau.

Memoirs of a Geisha (Tokio. Rob Marshall, 2005) 

• Torn between «Lost in Translation» and «Memoirs of a Geisha» to speak of Japan, and finally I chose the latter because the vision of Tokyo that provides «Lost in Translation» seemed more cramped and less appetizing (despite being ideal to acclimate the plot)    
  

• «Memoirs of a Geisha» is a plastic, artistic, aesthetic film, that, in addition to generating a lot of controversy at the time, was among others the Oscar for «Best Achievement in Art Direction» and the «Cinematography». And no wonder: the scenes are very groomed in photography and Japan appears overwhelming, spectacular in its various locations.

• The walk around Kyoto shows some of the most famous monuments and environments of the city as the Buddhist Kiyomizu -dera Temple or pure water Temple, and the Yoshmine.

• The waters of the Heian Jingu Shinto shrine in central Kyoto, served to represent the mood of Sayuri in one of the final sequences of the film and the magical Fushimi Inari, where kilometers of orange torii (arcs) back hills of the city, was the backdrop for the scene of the transformation of the young Chiyo.

• They completed principal photography in a remote tea and tangerines growing region near the city of Kawane, and the finishing touch was recording the passage of a locomotive by an old bridge over the Ohi River. The result is a film of great beauty and a vision of Japan is not short, you will want to discover it as you see the movie!

 

 

Death on the Nile (E.E.U.U. John Guillermin, 1978)

• Agatha Christie, also an excellent writer of novels based on crimes and murders, was a tireless traveler. They say that once traveled to Aswan (Egypt) and there was inspired to write his novel Death on the Nile (1937 ) between the walls of the Old Cataract Hotel ( today Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan) , located at the end of the valley Nile and in the beginning of the great Nubian desert . The hotel retains its colonial charm and luxury, and has an impressive terrace overlooking the Nile, from which one of the most beautiful sunsets sun of the world, Elephantine Island and the Mausoleum of the Aga Khan referred into The horizon. Legends of the Fall (E.E.U.U. Edward Zwick, 1995)

• Rocky Mountains symbolizing the last American border and from Canadian side, are the setting for this story of love. They symbolize nature in its wildest state and spirit of the explorers European settlers who set their foundations on the North American continent .

 

• The setting is unbeatable: ice, stone, snowy peaks, glaciers, rivers and tourquoise lakes around which the story is set.  
  

• The Maligne Lake is one of the Banff National Park, which together with Louise , Moraine, Emerald and Minnewanka lakes, the film shows.

• The ranch displayed the foot of an impressive mountain range and along the Ghost River sits, and is the gateway to the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Next to Banff National Park (sanctuary of grizzly bears) are the Jasper park in the North, the Iodo park in the West, and the Kootenay park i the South, all has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.     

• If watching the movie you decide in mid- August it is celebrated the Dragon Boat Festival on Lake Minnewanka in which Chinese dragons coated canoes travel through the lake driven by the fans. And in late October and early November you can see the Mountain Cinema Festival

 

 

 

 

 

The Beach (E.E.U.U. Danny Boyle, 2000)  

• If Thailand is one of your favorite places in the world and also see this film, I deal with it: you’ll end up like me taking a boat or a catamaran and stepping Maya Bay on Phi Phi Ley, one of the paradise Phi Phi islands lost at the Andaman Sea.

• The movie is not the best film you can watch, but just seeing the scenes of this natural wonder that is Maya Bay amortized your time. In addition, the start takes place in a chaotic Bangkok and adventure continues in Ao Nang Beach, which is not bad.     

• Maya Bay is a nature reserve in which no possibility of accommodation, only a snack bar to cater to tourists. But do not worry , in the neighboring Phi Phi Don enconraréis all kinds of places to stay overnight, my favorite is Phi Phi The Beach Resort. 
  

• The coolest feature of this landscape are rocky formations that emerge from the water and whose greenery contrasts with the clear waters that surround the bay and around the area. The training continues under the sea to 30 meters deep, and instead of vegetation are covered by purple, white and yellow corals.

 

 

 

 

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (E.E.U.U. Simon West, 2001)

• Angkor Wat  in Cambodia is an unresolved but which I know I will pass soon 🙂 In this movie, shown in all its splendor both from without and recreating its deepest recesses, through the figure of Lara Croft.    

• For me it is one of the most beautiful places on earth, full of history, culture and magnetism. And the film crew had no doubt: why recreate a scene on the sets having similar natural «set» hidden in the forest and embraced by the roots of the giant trees?    
  

• Angkor City buildings reflected in the influence of architecture and religious beliefs brought by trade from India, and while still standing only a part of the original buildings as the Terrace of the Elephants, a stone base to the Royal Palace facade supported by carvings of hunting scenes with elephants, worth.   
  

• Upon entering, we welcome the give the enigmatic giant figures of the Buddha faces adronan the towers of Bayon Temple.

• Then, the film shows us the Ta Phrom temple, (better known as «Lara Croft Temple»), over 900 years old. Lucía and sex. (Spain. Julio Médem. 2001)

• The paradise island of Formentera shines in all its natural splendor in this film by Julio Medem with Paz Vega and Tristan Ulloa as protagonists.
  

• The best: its transparent and white sandy beaches that rival the Caribbean . In one of them, Illetes, much of the film was shot. Located in a privileged environment in the most northern point of the island , they are the most visited by tourists.

• The most popular the image of the film is that of Lucia touring the island on a motorbike. It is one of the best ways to explore Formentera. You can also bike , it is more economical and ecological also put you in shape! Walking along the beach of ses Illetes to tip, you get to the island of Espalmador, which wore a mud bath occurs with her hostel fellow, Carlos. Under the Tuscan Sun (E.E.U.U. Audrey Wells, 2004)

• Another example of a film that highlights especially no plot or script and where the undisputed star is the environment: Tuscany in its purest form, highlighting the beauty of its locations

• The film chronicles the life of a change of young American divorcee who abandons his world when tourist trip through Tuscany and falls in love with this land as we could happen to any of us who gets there first.   

• Locations began on paper with books and guides in Italy and Tuscany , but the real work was done «on the ground», leading the crew to discover places of unparalleled beauty in landscapes of an almost unreal perfection. Such as Cortona, where most of the film takes place and where the protagonist reconstructs his life and his house – Bramasole– in parallel.

 

• Another amazing plsce of the film is Montepulciano, with its beautiful piazza, ideal to wrap the flags Festival launching on the film instead.

• Rome and Positano are the other places where the story unfolds, but the true protagonist is Tuscany, a mandatory requirement for any tripper for its charm and its unparalleled beauty.

 

 

 

 

 

The Godfather (E.E.U.U. Francis Ford Coppola, 1972)

• Sicily and the Mafia associate immediately since the release of this masterpiece of Francis Ford Coppola. Sicily is one of the most genuine islands of the Italian coast and being in it is to think of the Cosa Nostra, especially if you visit the town of Corleone who received the name of the patriarch Don Vito (played brilliantly by Marlon Brando)

• Corleone appeared as a key point in the filming, but because the people were too developed as to acclimate rustic Sicily at the time, other towns like Savoca and Forza d’ Agro chose. They appreciate the famous Bar Vitelli in which Michael is presented to the father of his future wife Apollonia.  
  

• Some of the panoramic that appear on the film in Corleone, actually belong to the town of Motta Camastra, and the train station is not that of Bagheria, but the beautiful town of Taormina.

• One high point moments in the trilogy, when Michael prevents bullets from a gunman who finally impact their daughter Mary, occurs on the steps of the Teatro Massimo of Palermo, one of the cities most «rogue» of the island with a historical district full of markets, baroque steeple, Norman palaces and decadent mansions.

• Sicily is one of the most entertaining and complete trips I have made and about which we will write later a post in a position, if you decide to go do not miss Palermo and Catania, the beautiful Taormina, Noto and Ragusa, make a visit to Etna and put an end in the Aeolian Islands: Lipari, Alicudi, Filicudi, Stromboli, Vulcano and Salina.
