Estamos de vuelta!!!

Con apenas mil vecinos y un perfil que a veces te recuerda al Sur de Francia o algún pueblecito de la Toscana, Albarracín dicen que es uno de los pueblos más bonitos de España y, ahora que por fin he podido conocerlo, doy fe de ello! Sus edificios rosados escalando la montaña, su herencia andalusí y su atmósfera medieval te hacen sentir como dentro de un cuento de otra época y cada calle esconde mil y un rincones secretos para fantasear y fotografiar.

Una de las grandes particularidades de este lugar es su ubicación en las alturas rodeado de una fértil (y preciosa, por cierto) vega: una estrategia de defensa magistral que la convirtió en una zona prácticamente inexpugnable ante los ataques a los que se vio expuesta en el pasado. Aquí encontramos nada menos que hasta tres castillos y dos recintos amurallados: la antigua Medina y el recinto de la Torre del Andador.

Tras una escapada inolvidable a esta maravillosa localidad estaba en deuda con vosotros… esta semana…

Un fin de semana en Albarracín, uno de los pueblos más bonitos de España

El gran inconveniente… ¿o uno de los secretos de su encanto? de Albarracín es que es un lugar un tanto recóndito y de difícil acceso. Especialmente si, como nos pasó a nosotros, haces caso al GPS y terminas cogiendo la ruta “supuestamente“ más rápida, en la que en el último tramo la carretera se vuelve sinuosa y compleja entre la serranía. Mientras cogíamos cada una de sus enrevesadas curva me preguntaba… “¿merecerá tanto la pena?“... y al final resultó que sí la mereció. 

Llegamos, y dejamos el coche a las puertas del centro antiguo (peatonal), cosa que nos gustó: anticipaba un casco histórico tranquilo e ideal para pasear. Y, efectivamente, el hecho de poder disfrutarlo a pie sin coches alrededor conservaba aún mejor su encanto medieval. Dejamos las maletas en nuestro alojamiento (todo un exitazo!!!! totalmente recomendable si viajáis a Albarracín, os cuento todo más adelante) y comprobar con la dueña que habíamos hecho la “ruta de los novatos“ (resultó que el camino que el GPS indicaba como un poco más largo era mejor y más cómodo…) nos dispusimos a dejarnos llevar y descubrir a pequeños sorbitos aquel maravilloso lugar… esta fue nuestra experiencia:

 

La muralla

Lo primero que llama la atención al contemplar a lo lejos Albarracín es su gran muralla. Los muros que la rodean dejan testimonio del paso del islamismo y del cristianismo, y ascender hasta ellos permite tener una panorámica perfecta de todo el conjunto arquitectónico. No es mal plan hacer un poco de ejercicio y subir a conocerlos para tener una primera toma de contacto con la localidad. Para ello existen tres diferentes caminos, pero a nosotros nos resultó facilísimo llegar siguiendo las indicaciones desde las escaleras que parten de la Calle Palacios. Una vez arriba (pronto os acostumbraréis que Albarracín es un continuo subir y bajar cuestas), y tras atravesar grandes caserones nobles, atravesaréis una pequeña puerta con un arco de piedra que os dará acceso a unas vistas increíbles de la vega del Guadalaviar y el barrio del Arrabal.

Desde esta puerta se puede coger el camino que llega hasta la torre del Andador, a una altura de 1240 metros sobre el nivel del mar, o bajar por el camino que lleva hasta el torreón redondo hasta donde termina la muralla. Por el camino, os vais a aburrir de tomar fotos y de admirar las vistas de los alrededores.

 

 

Los monumentos

Para hacer un buen repaso, a medida que recorráis las calles del pueblo fijaos en sus principales monumentos: la Catedral, el Castillo, la iglesia de Santa María, el Palacio Episcopal, la calle Azagra, la Torre Blanca, el Museo Diocesano, el Museo de Albarracín… y hasta un Museo del Juguete. En la Oficina de Turismo (c/ San Antonio, 2), situada en la parte baja del pueblo justo al lado del parking, te darán un mapa y te marcarán el camino para no perderte ninguno de ellos. Se ven de manera bastante rápida y en poco tiempo, mientras vais caminando y disfrutando de la belleza de las calles medievales del pueblo. Justo frente a la Catedral (a la que solo se puede acceder al interior en las visitas guiadas de la Fundación Santa María de Albarracín), os encontraréis con otro gran mirador para divisar la localidad.

 

La Plaza Mayor y el Ayuntamiento porticado

Tras una mañana intensa de turisteo venga a subir empinadas cuestas, el cuerpo nos pedía hacer una parada para recuperar fuerzas y tomar algo. Para ello, nada mejor que la Plaza Mayor, que aquella hora empezaba a animarse, especialmente en el bar La Taberna que siempre tenía gente y buen ambiente. La gente se sacaba sus consumiciones a la plaza y disfrutaba del sol ante el Ayuntamiento y sus pórticos. Un par de bancos, un estanco y algunos bares terminan de dar forma a esta plaza sencilla pero cargada de personalidad y nos enamoró con su energía y vitalidad.

 

 

El sendero Del Río Guadalaviar 

Sin ninguna duda, fue la parte que más nos gustó de nuestro viaje. En la parte baja de Albarracín, justo a mano derecha del pequeño túnel que desemboca en el parking, existe una ruta que sigue el curso del Río Guadalaviar rodeando el pueblo a lo largo de unos 4 kms. Caminando por ella se atraviesan paisajes irreales que te trasladan a otros lugares: desde cañones de tonos rojizos que te recuerdan al colorado hasta bosques y cascadas propias de Tolkien y el Señor de los Anillos, atravesando senderos, puentes y escaleras levadizas en los desfiladeros. Una perspectiva totalmente diferente de Albarracín y un camino inolvidable en el que sentirse casi un Indiana Jones.

Al final del camino, llegando ya al parking, encontraréis indicaciones para llegar al Paisaje Protegido de los Pinares de Ródeno, a 3 kilómetros, ideal si queréis completar vuestro día paseando por la naturaleza y ver las cuevas del Prado del Navazo, Doña Clotilde y la Cocinilla del Obispo, famosas por sus pinturas rupestres.

 

La Calle Azagra y la Calle Portal de Molina

Desde la Plaza Mayor, la Calle Azagra es una calle característica en la que los tejados de los edificios de los dos lados de la calle casi se tocan creando un ambiente un tanto misterioso y dicen que si llueve es ideal para caminar por ella porque apenas te mojas… en ella se encuentra la casa de los Navarro de Arzuriaga, una de las familias más influyentes de la tierra, originariamente construida en el siglo XVII y en la que destacan la fachada – que recuerda a la de las construcciones andaluzas de la época -, su torre-lucenario y sus escaleras. La Calle Portal De Molina es otra calle típica albarracinense en la que está la plazuela de la Comunidad con la Casa de la Comunidad, uno de los edificios más antiguos de la ciudad con un arco de medio punto en su puerta.  Justo enfrente se encuentran de las puertas de la muralla, el Portal del Agua, y al final de la calle la casa de la Julianeta, una de las más identificativas de Albarracín por su estructura casi sin apoyos verticales.

 

Disfrutando del ambiente y la gastronomía local

Una cosa os digo de antemano… si vas a Albarracín id mentalizados porque vais a comer y beber como nunca! Esta pequeña localidad está marcada por horarios y costumbres no escritos en los que, a determinadas horas del día, los bares, restaurantes, tabernas y bares de tapas se abarrotan de gente para disfrutar de un vermú o un vino y después darse un buen homenaje. Nosotros descubrimos algunos lugares que nos dejaron huella para siempre, y no sólo en el estómago! 😉

 

Para tapear, La Taba y La Despensa

• La Taba es un bar de tapas muy especial y bohemio… con unas tapas y raciones deliciosas, con un ambiente distendido y animado, música, vino, y hasta un balconcito precioso donde salir a disfrutar de las vistas de los alrededores a los pies de la Catedral. Todo está buenísimo: las croquetas, el cous cous con foie, la ensalada de champiñones con aguacate… combinan a la perfección la tradición y la modernidad. En la Travesía de la Catedral, 9.

 

• La Despensa es un sitio pequeñito y familiar, con una carta sencilla pero deliciosa, en el que sobre todo destaca su ambiente cálido y acogedor. Ensaladilla rusa casera,   tostas, tablas de queso y embutido… ideal para pasar un rato tranquilo y dejar constancia del momento en una de las servilletas, siguiendo la tradición y colgándola en su pared. En la Calle del Chorro, 18.

 

 

Para comer, Tiempo de Ensueño

• Tiempo de Ensueño es uno de esos lugares que te sorprenden en Albarracin. Estaba justo al lado de nuestro alojamiento y la dueña nos lo recomendó encarecidamente. Entre las múltiples opciones gastronómicas – más bien tradicionales- de la zona, este restaurante en el que cocina un chef con una estrella Michelín (que se alterna entre este restaurante y El Batán, en el pueblo cercano de Tramacastilla) destaca por proponer recetas más creativas y platos modernos que fusionan recetas y sabores. El menú degustación no es barato (está en torno a los 50€) pero a cambio sales totalmente saciado y probando cosas tan deliciosas como la cartita de queso curado con aroma de azahar. Para salir y tomar una copa, el Molino del Gato 

• En Albarracín parecía haber ciertos flujos espontáneos y observamos que, si a la una era era la hora del vermut y a las dos-dos y media la hora de comer, a partir de las tres y media-cuatro empezaba la hora de las copas. Y para disfrutarlas nos recomendaron el Molino del Gato,  un café-galería único por enclavarse en un antiguo molino que además regentaba la misma familia que llevaba nuestro alojamiento. Nada más entrar ya sientes que es especial, con su terraza exterior sobre el río y la antigua rueda del molino tras una pared de cristal a la entrada. Dentro, el ambiente es ideal para disfrutar un café, un licor o una cerveza más especial y relajarse mientras se baja la contundente comida de la zona. En la Calle Llano del Arrabal, justo al lado del aparcamiento y dela Oficina de Turismo.

 

Un alojamiento con mucho encanto 

No me puedo ir sin dejar de recomendaros el alojamiento en el que nos hospedamos en Albarracín, un hotel familiar con mucho encanto llamado La Casa del Tío Americano, todo un acierto! Ya no solo por la amabilidad y hospitalidad de sus propietarios, sino por la ubicación, la habitación, las vistas, la tranquilidad de su jardín… lo tenía todo! Pudimos dejar el coche a tan solo dos minutos andando del alojamiento evitándonos así subir las cuestas con las maletas y nos obsequiaron con un botella de cava helada a nuestra llegada, además de servirnos un desayuno sencillo y delicioso cada día. La casa es la típica edificación de Albarracín y cuenta con 6 habitaciones, dos de ellas están fuera en el jardín y tienen su propia terraza. Nosotros elegimos la habitación número 2 que nos enamoró por su preciosa galería con unas vistas impresionantes del pueblo con las que nos despertábamos cada mañana… la única habitación que quizás no recomendaría sería la 1 ya que está justo en la zona de recepción, pero por lo demás… 100% recomendable! Los precios rondan los 90-100€ la noche con el desayuno incluido.

 

Esta época del año es ideal para visitar Albarracín, el sol hace que la Plaza Mayor se llene de gente y en la caída de la tarde los colores rosados de las casas se vuelven más intensos… por ello os propongo un par de opciones frescas, cómodas y sobre todo adecuadas para poder caminar sin dificultad por las cuestas empinadas y empedradas del centro…

Y si os habéis quedado con ganas de más, lo mejor de Albarracín es que se encuentra a tan solo 37 kms. de Teruel, una ciudad pequeñita pero muy acogedora e ideal para visitar en una mañana…. pero esto os lo contaré en una nueva aventura!!! Espero haberos picado la curiosidad por visitar este precioso pueblecito y que os animéis a dedicar unas horas de viaje para conocerlo, porque sé que, como a mi, os va a encantar!

We are back!!!

With barely a thousand neighbors and a profile that sometimes reminds you of the South of France or some small village in Tuscany, Albarracin say it is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain and, now that I’ve finally been able to meet you, I can attest to that! Its pink buildings climbing the mountain, its Andalusian heritage and its medieval atmosphere make you feel like inside a story from another era and every street hides a thousand and one secret corners to fantasize and photograph.

One of the great features of this place is its location on the heights surrounded by a fertile (and beautiful, by the way) vega: a strategy of masterful defense that turned it into an area practically impregnable before the attacks to which it was exposed in last. Here we find no less than up to three castles and two walled enclosures: the old Medina and the enclosure of the Torre del Andador.

After an unforgettable getaway to this wonderful town I was in debt to you … this week …

 

A weekend in Albarracín, one of the most beautiful villages in Spain

The great inconvenience … or one of the secrets of its charm? of Albarracín is that it is a somewhat remote place and difficult to access. Especially if, as happened to us, you pay attention to the GPS and you end up taking the «supposedly» fastest route, in which in the last section the road becomes winding and complex between the mountains. While we were taking each one of his convoluted curves he asked me … «Will it be worth that much?» … and in the end it turned out that it deserved it.

We arrived, and left the car at the gates of the old center (pedestrian), which we liked: we anticipated a quiet historic center and ideal for walking. And indeed, the fact of being able to enjoy it on foot without cars around preserved its medieval charm even better. We leave the suitcases in our accommodation (a great success !!!! fully recommended if you travel to Albarracín, I’ll tell you everything later) and check with the owner that we had made the «rookie route» (it turned out that the road that the GPS indicated how a little longer it was better and more comfortable …) we prepared to let ourselves go and discover in small sips that wonderful place … this was our experience:

 

The wall

The first thing that draws attention when contemplating in the distance Albarracin is its great wall. The surrounding walls bear witness to the passage of Islamism and Christianity, and ascending to them allows a perfect panoramic view of the entire architectural ensemble. It is not a bad plan to do a little exercise and go up to know them to have a first contact with the locality. For this there are three different roads, but it was very easy for us to arrive following the indications from the stairs that start from Palacios Street. Once up (soon you will get used to Albarracín is a continuous up and down slopes), and after crossing large noble houses, you will cross a small door with a stone arch that will give you access to incredible views of the valley of Guadalaviar and the neighborhood of the Arrabal.

From this door you can take the path that leads to the tower of El Andador, at an altitude of 1240 meters above sea level, or go down the path that leads to the round tower until the wall ends. Along the way, you will get bored of taking pictures and admiring the views of the surroundings.

 

 

The monuments

To make a good review, as you walk the streets of the town look at its main monuments: the Cathedral, the Castle, the Church of Santa Maria, the Episcopal Palace, the Azagra Street, the White Tower, the Diocesan Museum, the Museum of Albarracín … and even a Toy Museum. At the Tourist Office (San Antonio Street, 2), located in the lower part of the town right next to the parking lot, they will give you a map and they will mark you the way so you do not miss any of them. They look quite quickly and in a short time, while you are walking and enjoying the beauty of the medieval streets of the town. Just in front of the Cathedral (which can only be accessed inside the guided tours of the Santa María de Albarracín Foundation), you will find another great viewpoint to see the town.

 

The Plaza Mayor and the Town Hall

After an intense morning of turisteo come to climb steep slopes, the body asked us to make a stop to recover strength and drink. For this, nothing better than the Plaza Mayor, that hour began to animate, especially in the bar La Taberna that always had people and good atmosphere. People took their drinks to the square and enjoyed the sun before the Town Hall and its porticos. A couple of banks, a tobacconist and some bars finish giving shape to this simple square but full of personality and we fell in love with its energy and vitality.

 

The path of the River Guadalaviar

Without a doubt, it was the part that we liked most about our trip. In the lower part of Albarracín, just to the right of the small tunnel that leads to the parking lot, there is a route that follows the course of the Guadalaviar River, which surrounds the village for about 4 km. Walking through it, you will go through unreal landscapes that take you to other places: from red-toned canyons that remind you of the colorado to forests and waterfalls typical of Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings, crossing paths, bridges and ladders in the ravines. A totally different perspective of Albarracín and an unforgettable road in which to feel almost an Indiana Jones.

At the end of the road, arriving at the car park, you will find directions to reach the Protected Landscape of the Ródeno pine forests, 3 kilometers away, ideal if you want to complete your day walking through nature and see the caves of Prado del Navazo, Doña Clotilde and the Cocinilla del Obispo, famous for its cave paintings.

 

Azagra Street and Portal de Molina Street

From the Plaza Mayor,  Azagra is a characteristic street where the roofs of the buildings on both sides of the street are almost touching creating a somewhat mysterious atmosphere and they say that if it rains it is ideal to walk on it because you barely get wet … in it is the house of the Navarro de Arzuriaga family, one of the most influential families on earth, originally built in the seventeenth century and in which the façade stands out – reminiscent of the Andalusian constructions of the epoch -, its tower and its stairs. The Portal De Molina Street is another albarracinense typical street in which there is the community square with the Community House, one of the oldest buildings in the city with a semicircular arch at its door. Just opposite are the doors of the wall, the Portal del Agua, and at the end of the street the house of the Julianeta, one of the most identifying Albarracín for its structure almost without vertical supports.

 

Enjoying the atmosphere and gastronomy of the area

One thing I say to you beforehand … if you go to Albarracin,  you are going to eat and drink like never before! This small town is marked by unwritten hours and customs in which, at certain times of the day, bars, restaurants, taverns and tapas bars are crowded with people to enjoy a vermouth or wine and then give a good tribute. We discovered some places that left their mark forever, and not just in the stomach! 😉

 

Tapas: La Taba y La Despensa

• La Taba is a very special and bohemian tapas bar … with delicious tapas and portions, with a relaxed and lively atmosphere, music, wine, and even a lovely little balcony where you can enjoy the views of the surroundings at the foot of the Cathedral. Everything is great: the croquettes, the cous cous with foie, the mushroom salad with avocado … perfectly combine tradition and modernity. In the Crossing of the Cathedral, 9.

• La Despensa is a small and familiar place, with a simple but delicious menu, which especially highlights its warm and friendly atmosphere. Homemade Russian salad, toast, cheese boards and sausage … ideal to spend a quiet time and record the moment in one of the napkins, following the tradition and hanging it on your wall. In Chorro Street, 18.

 

Lunch or dinner:  Tiempo de Ensueño

• Tiempo de Ensueño  is one of those places that surprise you in Albarracin. It was right next to our accommodation and the owner recommended it to us. Among the many gastronomic options – rather traditional – of the area, this restaurant in which a chef cooks with a Michelin star (which alternates between this restaurant and El Batán, in the nearby town of Tramacastilla) stands out for proposing more creative recipes and modern dishes that fuse recipes and flavors. The tasting menu is not cheap (it is around € 50) but in return you are totally sated and tasting things as delicious as the cheesecake with the aroma of orange blossom. In Palacios Street, 1.

 

Going out and have some drinks, The Molino del Gato 

• In Albarracín there seemed to be certain spontaneous flows and we observed that if at one o’clock it was the time of the vermouth and at two-two-thirty the time to eat, from three thirty-four the time of the drinks began. And to enjoy them they recommended us the Molino del Gato,  a unique coffee-gallery to be located in an old mill that also ran the same family that took our accommodation. As soon as you enter you feel that it is special, with its outdoor terrace on the river and the old mill wheel behind a glass wall at the entrance. Inside, the atmosphere is ideal to enjoy a coffee, a liquor or a more special beer and relax while you download the convivial food of the area. On Llano del Arrabal Street, right next to the parking lot and the Tourist Office.

 

A charming accommodation

I can not leave without recommending the accommodation in which we stayed in Albarracín, a charming family guest house called La Casa del Tío Americano, all a success! Not only because of the kindness and hospitality of its owners, but because of the location, the room, the views, the tranquility of its garden … it had everything! We were able to leave the car just two minutes walk from the accommodation avoiding us to climb the slopes with suitcases and we were presented with a bottle of frozen champagne on arrival, in addition to serving us a simple and delicious breakfast every day. The house is the typical building of Albarracín and has 6 rooms, two of which are outside in the garden and have their own terrace. We chose room number 2 that we fell in love with for its beautiful gallery with stunning views of the village that we woke up with every morning … the only room that I might not recommend would be 1 as it is right in the reception area, but the rest … 100% recommended! Prices are around 90-100 € per night with breakfast included. Palacios Street, 9.

 

This time of year is perfect to visit Albarracin, the sun makes the Plaza Mayor fill with people and in the late afternoon the pink colors of the houses become more intense … so I propose a couple of fresh options , comfortable and above all adequate to be able to walk without difficulty on the steep and cobbled slopes of the center …
