En estos días de Otoño me apetece buscar escapadas animadas y fáciles en las que romper con la rutina por unos días. En España tenemos el gran privilegio de contar con varias de las mejores D.O. de vino del Mundo, así que tampoco me he complicado demasiado: sumando ambos factores me ha salido un planazo de fin de semana por la Ribera del Duero. Un plan que lo tiene todo: paisajes que en estos días se tiñen de bonitos colores rojizos, naturaleza, cultura, visita a algunas de las más importantes bodegas de la zona, una excelente gastronomía, y uno de mis placeres preferidos del Mundo, el vino de la Ribera del Duero… si también sois amantes del vino y estáis pensando en hacer una peregrinación enológica próximamente, comparto con vosotros esta ruta que me parece una de las más completas y atractivas…
Una escapada de fin de semana por la Ruta del Vino de la Ribera del Duero
Como decía, este itinerario está pensado para pasar un fin de semana completo en las localidades más representativas, visitando sus mejores bodegas. Atraviesa viñas, ríos, campos, castillos o pueblos con encanto del románico, gótico y del medievo, en poco más de 100km. por la pintoresca N-122 pasando por Soria, Burgos y Valladolid. Aranda de Duero sería el punto intermedio del viaje.
Día 1. De Quintanilla de Onésimo a Peñafiel visitando las Bodegas Arzuaga y Vega Sicilia, comiendo en Molino de Palacios y durmiendo en el Hotel Spa Convento Las Claras
Quintanilla de Onésimo es un pueblecito ideal para pasear por sus callejuelas y disfrutar de sus iglesias y casonas. Antes de empezar nuestra ruta, podemos dedicarle un tiempo a cruzar su puente renacentista del s. XV sobre el río, llegando a Olivares de Duero, que destaca por la iglesia gótica de San Pelayo del Siglo. XV y su retablo plateresco del Siglo XVI.
El tramo entre Quintanilla de Onésimo y Peñafiel atraviesa grandes viñedos ilustres como los de Vega Sicilia, Abadía Retuerta, Arzuaga, Viña Mayor, Protos o Pesquera. La mayoría de estas bodegas son visitables, y aunque todas son interesantes nuestro día solo tiene 24h, así que he destacado especialmente Vega Sicilia y Arzuaga.
Bodegas Arzuaga Navarro
En el Km. 325 de la N-122, a mitad de camino entre Valladolid y Soria, encontramos esta majestuosa bodega – hotel – spa fundada en los 90 por la familia Arzuaga – Navarro rodeada de viñas y un paisaje encantador. Sus viñedos poseen unas uvas de gran calidad y dan lugar a unos de los vinos más prestigiosos de la D.O. Ribera del Duero y unos de los que más me gustan! Así que sin dudarlo, hay que hacer una parada en las bodegas y visitar sus instalaciones, terminando con una cata de tres de sus variedades junto a un aperitivo. La visita cuesta 15€ por persona, dura unos 75 minutos y empieza a las 12:30h entre semana/ a las 12h el fin de semana.
Bodegas Vega Sicilia
A tan solo 3kms., en el km. 322 de esta misma carretera, nos encontramos con otras de las bodegas más emblemáticas de España: Vega Sicilia. Es una de las más antiguas y también una de las mejores del Mundo, y en sus viñedos nacen sus dos grandes vinos Único y Valbuena, que nada tienen que envidiar a los grandes vilos de Burdeos o Borgoña. Por lo tanto, visitar esta bodega es una experiencia única y casi un privilegio. La bodega dispone de su propia tonelería y fabrica sus propias barricas, de las cuales salen estos grandes vinos entre los que se pueden catar cuatro (por ejemplo, el Pintia, el Aillón, el Valbuena y el Oremus de 5 puntojos). Comida en Molino de Palacios
En lo que fue un molino harinero medieval y ubicado justo al lado río Duratón, el Restaurante Molino de Palacios es un lugar ideal para parar a comer, ya que además de asador (para quien quiera tomar el famoso cordero asado), está especializado en caza y setas (las hacen buenísimas). Si hace sol, lo mejor es comer en la terraza junto al río.
Visitando Peñafiel
Tras la comida, una de las visitas obligada en Peñafiel es su característico castillo, situado en lo alto de un cerro, muy recomendable para andas un poco y hacer ejercicio tras la comilona. El castillo es una enorme fortaleza desde donde se divisan los valles de alrededor. También en esta lugar encontramos el Museo Provincial del Vino que da a conocer la riqueza enológica de la zona (6€ la entrada) Tras la visita, podemos bajar la colina y ver tanto el Convento de San Pablo de estilo gótico mudéjar o la impresionante Plaza del Coso, del Siglo XII. Pero lo mejor de Peñafiel es su animado ambiente, así que no podemos terminar el día sin sentarnos en alguna de sus terrazas y relajarnos, una de las que más me gustan es la del Chicopa, en la Plaza de España.
Durmiendo en un antiguo convento, Hotel Spa Convento Las Claras
Me resulta difícil cuando voy a Peñafiel elegir entre el Hotel AF Pesquera (con un desayuno espectacular y una pequeña taberna informal llamada La Perla en la que se tapea de maravilla) o en el Hotel Convento Las Claras… Finalmente os voy a recomendar éste último por ser más céntrico (para llegar al Hotel Pesquera hay que salir un poco a las afueras y el día ya ha sido demasiado largo). Este hotel es muy acogedor y está situado en la capilla de clausura del antiguo convento de las monjas clarisas de Peñafiel, tiene un claustro impresionante en el que se sirven los desayunos y además se encuentra muy cerca de las bodegas de vino. Precio: 80€ la noche.
Día 2. De Peñafiel a Aranda de Duero pasando por Roa, visitando las bodegas Protos y Don Carlos, comiendo en Cepa 21 y durmiendo en el Hotel Villa de Aranda
Tras darnos un buen desayuno en el claustro del hotel, ponemos rumbo hacia Aranda de Duero y nuestra primera parada es conocer una de las bodegas más famosas de Peñafiel: las Bodegas Protos
Bodegas Protos
Estas bodegas fueron de las primeras de la D.O. y se encuentran justo a los pies del castillo. Realizan visitas guiadas en las que por unos 10€ se pasea por sus instalaciones (tanto la antigua como la moderna de diseño) y después se realiza la cata. Construidas en 1927, fueron de las primeras de la D.O. de la Ribera del Duero. Situadas a los pies del Castillo, su arquitectura une tradición y vanguardia y la visita guiada incluye sus instalaciones -la antigua que recorre el interior de la montaña y la nueva de diseño- y una degustación de sus vinos.
Visita a Roa de Duero
Empezamos el camino hacia Aranda de Duero, pasando antes por Roa, a unos 20 kms. de distancia de Aranda. Roa es un lugar histórico que durante la época romana fue cruce de caminos entre Clunia y Asturica Augusta o Astorga. Cuenta con varios monumentos interesantes como la ex Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción del siglo XVI o los los restos de una muralla medieval levantada en el siglo XIII. Roa, además, es uno de los balcones más importantes de la Ribera del Duero, por lo que podemos dedicarle al menos un par de horas e incluso quedarnos a comer en el pueblo.
Comida en el Restaurante Cepa 21
Retomando la N-122 para llegar a Aranda, encontramos un lugar ideal para comer no solo por su cocina y el buen trato del personal, sino también por sus preciosas vistas de los viñedos desde las mesas. Ya que el día anterior nos hemos dado el homenaje del asado tradicional, en este caso vamos a probar una cocina más innovadora en la que se mezclan y fusionan los sabores. Dentro de sus menús, se puede disfrutar de croquetas de rabo de toro, patata brava suflada, bocadillos de panceta… Además cuentan con menús degustación desde 50€. Un restaurante creativo, imaginativo y sorprendente para vivir nuevas experiencias en el viaje.
Aranda de Duero
Con una población de más de 30.000 habitantes y con más de 300 bodegas subterráneas (la mitad aproximadamente de ellas visitables), Aranda es una parada obligatoria en nuestro camino. Otra de sus grandes facetas es la gastronomía: es la sede del Consejo Regulador del Lechazo Asado y de la morcilla de Aranda, y es famosa por sus restaurantes. Pero, además de todo esto, nos va a permitir una tarde entretenida de turisteo visitando los templos cristianos de Santa María la Real (con su fachada de estilo gótico isabelino), San Juan o San Nicolás de Bari, o incluso la bodega histórica Don Carlos SXV . Tras dar una vuelta para conocer los tesoros de la ciudad, una buena alternativa para la cena es el Restaurante de la Finca Torremilanos.
Noche en el Hotel Villa de Aranda
El emblemático Hotel Villa de Aranda ocupa un edificio histórico en pleno centro de la ciudad y se encuentra a escasos minutos a pie de la bodega histórica Don Carlos y de la Iglesia Santa María la Real. A pesar de estar un edificio antiguo, sus instalaciones están totalmente renovadas y cuenta con una terraza espectacular para tomar una copa o desayunar. Y todo por 55€ la noche.
Día 3. De Aranda de Duero a San Esteban de Gormaz haciendo un alto en Gumiel de Izán para visitar las Bodegas Portia y Peñaranda de Duero comiendo en El Refugio de Don Miguel
En nuestro último día, y tras el check-out, vamos a seguir nuestro viaje hacia su meta, San Esteban de Gormaz, haciendo algunas paradas en el viaje:
Gumiel de Izan
En Gumiel de Izán aún se conservan los restos de una antigua fortaleza medieval y parte de la muralla que rodeaba la localidad. Aquí podemos ver el Arco de los Mesones, una de las cinco puertas de acceso al municipio, pasear por sus callejuelas empedradas o pasar un rato en sus plazas. La Iglesia de Santa María es uno de los edificios más importantes y digna de ver es su Plaza Mayor con su portada de estilo barroco. También existen unas cuantas ermitas cercanas al núcleo urbano como la de la Virgen Del Río o la de Santo Cristo de Reverche.
Bodegas Portia
Ya que estamos en la zona, lo ideal es hacer una visita a las las modernas Bodegas Portia, diseñadas por Norman Foster en forma de “corazón de tres pétalos“. Esta arquitectura “marida“ a la perfección con sus vinos, de estilo moderno y elegante. Las visitas, desde 11€, permiten entender el proceso de elaboración del vino desde el concepto de “bodega transparente y abierta”, y finaliza con una cata de dos vinos.
Peñaranda de Duero
Este pueblo de corazón medieval tiene un viejo castillo árabe y una de las construcciones civiles renacentistas más importantes, el Palacio de los Avellaneda. También permite visitar la Colegiata de Santa Ana con varios bustos de la época romana y dar un pequeño paseo por sus callejuelas, entre las que se encuentra una de las boticas más antiguas de toda España.
Comida en El Refugio de Don Miguel
Este restaurante sirve un excelente menú a buen precio en un local muy bonito, tranquilo y acogedor. La cocina es casera y las raciones abundantes, por lo que es una opción ideal tras visitar la localidad y alargar la sobremesa antes de llegar a nuestro último destino.
Llegamos a San Esteban de Gormaz, fin de nuestra ruta
Y terminamos la ruta en esta localidad, considerada la puerta de Castilla. En ella destacan el viejo castillo de San Esteban, la Iglesia de San Miguel, y la de la Virgen del Rivero con sus pórticos del siglo XII.

In these autumn days I want to look for animated and easy escapades in which to break with the routine for a few days. In Spain we have the great privilege of having several of the best D.O. Wine of the World, so these days I have not eaten too much head: adding both factors I got a weekend plan for the Ribera del Duero. A plan that has it all: landscapes that these days are stained with beautiful reddish colors, nature, culture, visit some of the most important wineries in the area, excellent cuisine, and one of my favorite delights of the World, wine of the Ribera del Duero … if you are also wine lovers and you are thinking about making an enological pilgrimage soon, I share with you this route that I think is one of the most complete and attractive …
A weekend getaway along the Wine Route of the Ribera del Duero
As I said, this itinerary is designed to spend a full weekend in the most representative locations, visiting in each of them its best wineries. It crosses vineyards, rivers, fields, castles or villages with Romanesque, Gothic and medieval charm, in just over 100km. by the picturesque N-122 going through Soria, Burgos and Valladolid. Aranda de Duero would be the intermediate point of the trip.
Day 1. From Quintanilla de Onésimo to Peñafiel visiting the Bodegas Arzuaga and Vega Sicilia, eating at Molino de Palacios and sleeping in the Hotel Spa Convento Las Claras
Quintanilla de Onésimo is an ideal village to walk through its streets and enjoy its churches and mansions. Before starting our route, we can dedicate some time to cross its Renaissance bridge of the s. XV over the river, reaching Olivares de Duero, which stands out for the Gothic church of San Pelayo and its plateresque altarpiece of the XVI Century.
The stretch between Quintanilla de Onésimo and Peñafiel crosses great illustrious vineyards like those of Vega Sicilia, Abadía Retuerta, Arzuaga, Viña Mayor, Protos or Pesquera. Most of these wineries are visited, and although all are interesting our day is only 24h, so I have especially highlighted Vega Sicilia and Arzuaga.
Arzuaga Navarro Wineries
At km 325 of the N-122, halfway between Valladolid and Soria, we find this majestic winery – hotel – spa founded in the 90s by the Arzuaga – Navarro family surrounded by vineyards and a charming landscape. Their vineyards have high quality grapes and give rise to one of the most prestigious wines of the D.O. Ribera del Duero and some of the ones I like the most! So without hesitation, you have to make a stop at the wineries and visit their facilities, ending with a tasting of three of its varieties with an appetizer. The visit costs € 15 per person, lasts about 75 minutes and starts at 12:30 am during the week / at 12 noon on the weekend.
Vega Sicilia Wineries
Only 3kms., In km. 322 of this same road, we find other of the most emblematic wineries in Spain: Vega Sicilia. It is one of the oldest and also one of the best in the world, and in its vineyards are born its two great wines, Unico and Valbuena, which have nothing to envy to the great wines of Bordeaux or Burgundy. Therefore, visiting this winery is a unique experience and almost a privilege. The winery has its own cooperage and produces its own barrels, from which come these great wines among which four can be tasted (for example: Pintia, Aillon, Valbuena and Oremus). Lunch time at Molino de Palacios
In what was once a medieval flour mill and located right next to Duratón River, the Molino de Palacios Restaurant is an ideal place to stop for lunch, as well as a grill (for those who want to take the famous roast lamb), it specializes in hunting and mushrooms (they make them great). If it is sunny, it is best to eat on the terrace by the river.
Visiting Peñafiel
After lunch, one of the must-see visits in Peñafiel is its characteristic castle, located on the top of a hill, highly recommended for a little walk and exercise after the feast. The castle is a huge fortress from which you can see the surrounding valleys. Also in this place we find the Provincial Museum of Wine that reveals the enological richness of the area (6 € the entrance) After the visit, we can go down the hill and see both the Convent of San Pablo of Mudejar Gothic style or the impressive Plaza del Coso, from the XII Century. But the best thing about Peñafiel is its lively atmosphere, so we can not end the day without sitting on one of its terraces and relaxing, one of the ones I like the most is Chicopa, in Plaza de España.
Sleeping in an old convent, Hotel Spa Convento Las Claras
I find it difficult when I go to Peñafiel to choose between Hotel AF Pesquera (with a spectacular breakfast and a small informal tavern called La Perla to enjoy their tapas) or in the Hotel Convento Las Claras… Finally I will recommend the second for being more central (to get to the Hotel Pesquera you have to go out a little to the outskirts and the day has already been too long). This hotel is very cozy and is located in the cloistered chapel of the former convent of the Clarisas nuns of Peñafiel, it has an impressive cloister where breakfasts are served and it is also very close to the wine cellars. Price: € 80 per night.
Day 2. From Peñafiel to Aranda de Duero passing through Roa, visiting the Protos and Don Carlos wineries, eating in Cepa 21 and sleeping in the Hotel Villa de Aranda
After giving us a good breakfast in the spectacular cloister of the hotel, we head towards Aranda de Duero and our first stop is to visit one of the most famous wineries in Peñafiel: Protos Wineries
Protos Wineries
These warehouses were among the first of the D.O. and they are right at the foot of the castle. They make guided tours in which for about € 10 you can walk through its facilities (both old and modern design) and then the tasting is done. Built in 1927, they were among the first of the D.O. of the Ribera del Duero. Located at the foot of the Castle, its architecture combines tradition and avant-garde and the guided tour includes its facilities – the old one that runs through the interior of the mountain and the new design – and a tasting of its wines.
Visiting Roa de Duero
We start the road to Aranda de Duero, passing by Roa, about 20 kms. away from Aranda. Roa is a historic place that during Roman times was a crossroads between Clunia and Asturica Augusta or Astorga. It has several interesting monuments such as the former Collegiate Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of the sixteenth century or the remains of a medieval wall built in the thirteenth century. Roa, in addition, is one of the most important balconies of the Ribera del Duero, so we can spend at least a couple of hours and even stay for lunch in the town.
Eating at Restaurant Cepa 21
Returning to the N-122 to reach Aranda, we found an ideal place to eat not only for its cuisine and the good treatment of the staff, but also for its beautiful views of the vineyards from the tables. Since the previous day we have given the homage of the traditional roast, in this case we are going to try a more innovative kitchen in which the flavors are mixed and fused. Within their menus, you can enjoy bull tail croquettes, brave potato sufferers, bacon sandwiches … They also have tasting menus from € 50. A creative, imaginative and surprising restaurant to live new experiences in the trip.
Aranda de Duero
With a population of more than 30,000 inhabitants and more than 300 underground wineries (half of them can be visited), Aranda is a mandatory stop on our way. Another of its great facets is gastronomy: it is the headquarters of the Regulating Council of Lechazo Asado and the black pudding of Aranda, and is famous for its restaurants. But, in addition to all this, it will allow us an entertaining afternoon of sightseeing visiting the Christian temples of Santa María la Real (with its Elizabethan Gothic facade), San Juan or San Nicolás de Bari, or even the historic Don Carlos winery SXV. After a tour to discover the treasures of the city, a good alternative for dinner is the Restaurant at Finca Torremilanos.
Sleeping in Villa de Aranda Hotel
The emblematic Hotel Villa de Aranda occupies a historic building right in the center of the city and is just a few minutes walk from the historic Don Carlos winery and the Santa María la Real Church. Despite being an old building, its facilities are completely renovated and has a spectacular terrace for a drink or breakfast. All for € 55 a night.
Day 3. From Aranda de Duero to San Esteban de Gormaz stopping at Gumiel de Izán to visit the Bodegas Portia and Peñaranda de Duero eating at El Refugio de Don Miguel
On our last day, and after check-out, we will continue our trip to your destination, San Esteban de Gormaz, making some stops on the trip:
Gumiel de Izan
In Gumiel de Izán the remains of an old medieval fortress and part of the wall that surrounded the town are still preserved. Here we can see the Arco de los Mesones, one of the five access gates to the municipality, walk through its cobbled streets or spend time in its squares. The Church of Santa María is one of the most important buildings and worth seeing is its Plaza Mayor with its Baroque style façade. There are also a few hermitages close to the urban core, such as the Virgen Del Río or Santo Cristo de Reverche.
Portia Wineries
Since we are in the area, the ideal is to visit the modern Portia Wineries, designed by Norman Foster in the form of «heart of three petals». This architecture «marida» to perfection with its wines, modern and elegant style. The visits, from € 11, allow us to understand the process of wine making from the concept of «transparent and open cellar», and ends with a tasting of two wines.
Peñaranda de Duero
This town of medieval heart has an old Arab castle and one of the most important Renaissance civil constructions, the Palace of the Avellaneda. It also allows you to visit the Collegiate Church of Santa Ana with several busts from the Roman era and take a short walk through its streets, among which is one of the oldest shops in Spain.
Eating at El Refugio de Don Miguel
This restaurant serves an excellent menu at a good price in a very nice, quiet and cozy place. The kitchen is homemade and the rations abundant, so it is an ideal option after visiting the town and extend the after-dinner before reaching our final destination.

And we finish the route in this town, considered the door of Castilla. In her they emphasize the old castle of San Esteban, the Church of San Miguel, and the Church of the Virgin of the Rivero with its porticos of century XII.
