Una de las muchas cosas que me gusta de viajar es sorprenderme. Cuando dedicas gran parte de tu vida a buscar información sobre destinos y lugares del Mundo, algunas veces se pierde un poco ese efecto WOW o incluso a veces te creas tantas expectativas previas que incluso luego puedes llegar a desilusionarte…

Y Fuerteventura, contra todo pronóstico, consiguió impresionarme. Con un estilo propio, con una personalidad a mi gusto diferente del resto de Islas Canarias, y con una fusión de elementos que me recordaban a otros destinos muy interesante: dunas desérticas, aguas cristalinas, un paisaje rústico y racial, y como guinda del pastel… millones de cactus!! (no lo puedo remediar, soy fan de los cactus 😜 ). En ocasiones me transportaba a otros lugares que había visitado antes… Tarifa, Menorca, el Caribe, Marruecos… y pero siempre desde una esencia auténtica y característica.

Así que lo que iban a ser unos días de relax y desconexión se convirtieron en un viaje especial e inolvidable... volvimos tan enamorados de esta isla que se ha convertido en una seria candidata a pasar algún fin de año en lugar de otros destinos lejanos a los que huimos buscando playas idílicas y rayos de sol. A veces, no hace falta cruzarse el planeta, y prueba de ello es este pequeño tesoro a tan solo 2 horas y media de Madrid.

Lo que me ha atrapado de Fuerteventura

 

Su espíritu salvaje

Aunque la isla está salpicada de poblaciones, ya desde el avión antes de aterrizar vais a poder percibir enormes extensiones de tierra y montañas vírgenes ajenas a la intervención del humano… incluso transitando por sus carreteras os sorprenderán sus amplias zonas desérticas donde los cactus crecen a sus anchas con total libertad. En varias ocasiones tuve la sensación de estar en un lugar recóndito y casi abandonado, aunque a los pocos kilómetros volvía a aparecer un nuevo pueblecito que conseguía traerme de nuevo al presente.

 

Sus playas vírgenes

Otra de las cosas que más me sorprendió la isla fueron sus playas: algunas de ellas son una mezcla muy interesante entre un paisaje rústico (que me recordaba a las playas de Tarifa), unas aguas increíblemente cristalinas con todo tipo de tonos turquesa (no exagero si os digo que se parecían a las de paraísos como Menorca o incluso el Caribe), dunas de arena propias del desierto y enormemente tranquilas: evitando las grandes poblaciones turísticas, apenas estaréis con 10 personas en la playa. Así que podemos decir que lo tienen todo para ser unas de las mejores playas que haya visitado.

Las playas que más me gustaron fueron:

• Las playas de Corralejo: El conjunto de playas de la Oliva, al Norte de la isla, os van a sorprender por su fina arena dorada y sus aguas transparentes. La playa del Parque Natural del Corralejo es un espectáculo especialmente durante la puesta de sol, en la que las dunas y el agua crean un paisaje único e idílico, sobre todo para los amantes de la fotografía.

 

• La playa de Sotavento:  Está situada en el Sur, en la Península de Jandía, y es muy peculiar por el lago que se forma en la orilla y la barrera de arena que se forma, ideal para realizar todo tipo de deportes acuáticos. En total, son 10 kms. de aguas calmadas y mansas para relajarse y disfrutar.

 

• La playa de Esquinzo: Fue nuestra playa durante varios días y nos enamoró por estar casi aislada del mundo, estar enmarcada por rocas en un entorno natural impresionante y porque muchos días estábamos prácticamente solos disfrutando de sus aguas. De verdad, no os la perdáis y no dejéis de visitarla aunque sea solo un día.

 

• La playa del Cotillo: Ideal para los amantes del surf, pero también apetecible para quienes no lo practicamos por sus “charcos“ que forman una especie de piscinas naturales de agua cristalina que os van a alucinar.

 

 

La isla – y el puertito – de Lobos

El Islote de Lobos es una pequeña isla virgen en el Norte de Fuerteventura cuyo nombre viene de los lobos marinos que la habitaban en el pasado. No os engaño si os digo que es un oasis verdadero con parajes naturales salvajes alucinantes y con una riqueza ecológica sin igual. Si las playas de Fuerteventura son chulas, prepararos a alucinar con las de Lobos, sus fondos marinos son tan espectaculares que han sido declarados reserva submarina. En sus tan solo 4 kms.2 concentra unas playas vírgenes de infarto y muy pocos rastros del hombre: apenas una cabaña de información, un restaurante regentado por la única familia que habita la isla o algunos senderos para recorrer sus rincones como el camino hacia el faro desde el que se puede divisar la vecina isla de Lanzarote, y en cuyo recorrido atraviesa el Volcán de la Caldera, en lo alto del islote, desde el hay unas preciosas vistas del Parque Natural de Corralejo.

Para llegar al islote, hay que coger un ferry en la playa de Corralejo que os dejará en el Puertito de Lobos, un puerto precioso que anuncia lo que vamos a descubrir en la isla y que además cuenta con una playa preciosa ideal para hacer snorkel que se llama la Playa del Puertito. Los ferries cuestan unos 15€ y el trayecto solo son unos 20 minutos.

 

 

Antigua y su molino de viento

Pese a lo que a muchos les pueda parecer, Fuerteventura no es solo sol, playa y resorts todo incluido. Antigua es uno de sus pueblecitos más pintorescos situado justo en el centro de la isla y fue una de las primeras localidades en ser habitadas. Su casco histórico es bastante bonito de pasear, destacando la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Antigua del Siglo XXVI o el Castillo de San Ventura, además de ejemplos de casas populares y de casonas de las clases acomodadas, como la Casona del Portón. En la localidad también hay dos yacimientos arqueológicos: “La Atalayita“ y “El Junquillo“.

Pero quizá lo más llamativo de Antigua sea sus característico Molino, un edificio circular construido con muros de mampostería y con una maquinaria de madera, que actualmente alberga una sala de exposiciones y una tienda de artesanía, además de acoger las instalaciones del Museo del Queso de Fuerteventura, dedicado al delicioso queso majorero.

 

Tefía

Visitar el pueblecito de Tefía es descubrir un antiguo asentamiento aborigen tradicional con casas de tejados bereberes, en el que destaca la Ermita de San Agustín del Siglo SVIII. Para hacerse a la idea de cómo se vivía en él en el pasado, en el asentamiento está el Eco Museo de la Alcogida. En definitiva, una visita que nos hace retrotraernos en el tiempo y curiosear entre playa y playa, bastante recomendable.

 

 

Un poco de adrenalina

Una de las cosas más divertidas para hacer en la isla es disfrutar de cualquiera de sus alternativas en cuanto a actividades deportivas, desde el kitesurf o el kiteboard hasta escalada o mountain bike, pasando por rutas en buggy, snorkel, buceo y submarinismo, windsurf… en prácticamente todas las localidades y playas encontraréis un centro especializado en este tipo de actividades que os van a ayudar a completar el viaje con experiencias irrepetibles. Su comida

La cocina majorera es famosa por su gran variedad de pescado (probad el Sancocho), la carne de cabrito asada con leña o el puchero majorero, sus quesos majoreros, blanco o pimentonados, o las papas arrugadas con mojo y gofio amasado. Dicen que en el pueblo de Cotillo se pueden encontrar excelentes restaurantes para tomar pescado, mientras que en Antigua encontraremos una gran variedad de oferta.

Para disfrutar de todos estos platos y de mucho más, estos son los restaurantes que no os podéis perder en la isla:

• En Cotillo:
  • El Roque de los Pescadores, para deleitarse con el pescado a la espalda y el solomillo de la casa ante unas vistas impresionantes. En la Calle de la Caleta 73. 
  • La Vaca Azul, en el muelle viejo, con un pulpo a la brasa con mojo de categoría. En la Calle Requena 9.
  • El Mirador, famoso por sus arroces y por su cabrito, en la Calle del Muelle de los Pescadores 19. 

• En Puerto del Rosario:
  • El Molino del Matorral, para degustar su especialidad de cabrito asado.
  • Benjamín, ideal para tomar queso y calamares saharianos. En la Calle León del Castillo 137.

• En Corralejo:
  • Avenida, para tomar pescado y cabrito del país. En la Calle General Prim 11.
  • Gregorio el Pescador, en la zona de Little Italy, famoso por su pescado y su caldereta de pulpo. En la Calle Iglesia 11.

• En Lajares:
  • Los Pinchitos, un lugar super popular en el que dicen que se sirve la mejor carne de cabrito de la isla (tanto frita como estofada). En la Calle Coronel Gonzales del Hierro 21.

• En Puertito de la Cruz:
  • El Caletón, con unas buenísimas papas arrugadas y especializado en el pulpo a la vinagreta. En Avenida del Puerto s/n.

• En la Carretera General, 94:
  • Casa Marcos, un bar con diversos premios gastronómicos por sus tapas y raciones de autor y con una carta de vinos de gran calidad.

Si lo que os apetece es tomar algo, lo mejor en Fuerteventura es hacerlo a la puesta de sol. En Ajuy hay un bar llamado Puesta de Sol que dicen que es uno de los mejores para hacerlo. Pero también son buenas opciones el Aqua o el Waikiki Beach Club en Corralejo.

 

Sitios especiales donde poder dormir

 

Es cierto que lo más popular en la isla son los grandes complejos Todo Incluido en los que retirarse y no salir… pero existen otras opciones y alternativas para los que quieran disfrutar de Fuerteventura de una forma diferente, entre las que destaco especialmente estas tres propuestas:

• La más romántica, Avanti Boutique Hotel en el centro de Corralejo. Un hotel boutique especial, cuidado, precioso y de atmósfera romántica que además cuenta con uno de los restaurantes más frecuentado de la zona, el Rompeolas.  El alojamiento ideal en la isla por 125€.

 

• El más rural, Hotel Era de la Corte. Con un estilo 100% majorero y en pleno medio rural en Antigua, este hotel ocupa un antiguo edificio de 1890 y es un remanso de paz y de relax. Habitaciones desde 73€.

 

• Los mejores apartamentos, Bahiazul Villas & Club, en Corralejo, ubicado en un paraje incomparable, se encuentran estas villas con piscina privada excepcionales para pasar unos días con todas las comodidades. A partir de 130€ la noche.

 

 

Para terminar el post, solo nos queda pensar en las cosas que meter en la maleta. Fuerteventura es pasar el día en la playa con lo mínimo posible, pero la tarde se presta a los paseos y excursiones y la noche a salir a tomar algo a sus pueblecitos… aquí os propongo algunas ideas.

One of the many things I like to travel is to be surprised. When you spend most of your life searching for information about destinations and places in the World, sometimes you lose that WOW effect or even you create so many previous expectations that even then you can get to disappoint you …

And Fuerteventura, against all odds, managed to impress me. With its own style, with a personality to my taste different from the rest of the Canary Islands, and with a fusion of elements that reminded me to other destinations very interesting: desert dunes, crystalline waters, a rustic and racial landscape, and as icing on the cake … millions of cacti!! (I can not help it, I’m a fan of cactus 😜). Sometimes I was transported to other places I had visited before … Tarifa, Menorca, the Caribbean, Morocco … and but always from an authentic and characteristic essence.

So what were going to be a few days of relaxation and disconnection became a special and unforgettable trip … we came back so in love with this island that it has become a serious candidate to spend some year-end instead of other distant destinations to whom we flee looking for idyllic beaches and rays of sun. Sometimes, you do not need to cross the planet, and proof of this is this little treasure only 2 hours and 30 minutes from Madrid.

What has caught me in Fuerteventura

 

Its wild spirit

Although the island is dotted with populations, already from the plane before landing you will be able to perceive huge tracts of land and virgin mountains untouched by the human intervention … even when traveling on its roads you will be surprised by its vast desert areas where cacti grow with total freedom. On several occasions I had the sensation of being in a hidden place and almost abandoned, although a few kilometers returned to appear a new small town that gets you back to the present.

 

Its virgin beaches

Another of the things that surprised me most about the island were its beaches: some of them are a very interesting mixture between a rustic landscape (which reminded me of the beaches of Tarifa), incredibly crystalline waters with all kinds of turquoise tones (no exaggeration If I say that they resembled those of paradises like Menorca or even the Caribbean), sand dunes of the desert and enormously quiet: avoiding the large tourist populations, you will hardly be with 10 people on the beach. So we can say that they have everything to be one of the best beaches you have visited.

The beaches that I liked the most were:

• Corralejo Beaches: The beaches of La Oliva, to the north of the island, will surprise you with its fine golden sand and transparent waters. The beach of the Corralejo Natural Park is a spectacle especially during the sunset, in which the dunes and the water create a unique and idyllic landscape, especially for lovers of photography.

 

• Sotavento Beach:  It is located in the South, in the Peninsula of Jandía, and is very peculiar by the lake that forms on the shore and the barrier of sand that forms, ideal for all kinds of water sports. In total, they are 10 kms. calm and calm waters to relax and enjoy.

 

• Esquinzo Beach: It was our beach for several days and we fell in love with being almost isolated from the world, being framed by rocks in an amazing natural environment and because many days we were practically alone enjoying its waters. Really, do not miss it and do not miss visiting it even one day.

 

• The beach of Cotillo: Ideal for surf lovers, but also appealing to those who do not practice it for their «pools» that form a kind of natural pools of crystal clear water that you will loe.

 

The island – and the puertito – of Lobos

The Islote de Lobos is a small, virgin island in the north of Fuerteventura whose name comes from the sea lions that inhabited it in the past. I do not deceive you if I tell you that it is a true oasis with amazing natural wild landscapes and with an ecological wealth without equal. If the beaches of Fuerteventura are cool, prepare to hallucinate with those of Lobos, its marine bottoms are so spectacular that they have been declared submarine reserve. In its only 4 kms.2 it concentrates some virgin beaches of infarction and very few traces of the man: hardly an information hut, a restaurant run by the only family that inhabits the island or some paths to cross its corners as the road towards the A lighthouse from which you can see the neighboring island of Lanzarote, and on the way through the Caldera Volcano, on top of the island, from there are beautiful views of the Corralejo Natural Park.

To get to the island, take a ferry on the beach in Corralejo that will leave you in Puertito de Lobos, a beautiful port that announces what we are going to discover on the island and also has a beautiful beach ideal for snorkeling Is called the Playa del Puertito. Ferries cost about € 15 and the journey is only about 20 minutes.

 

Antigua and its windmill

Despite what many may think, Fuerteventura is not just sun, beach and all-inclusive resorts. Antigua is one of its most picturesque villages located right in the center of the island and was one of the first towns to be inhabited. Its historical center is quite beautiful to walk around, emphasizing the Church of Our Lady of Antigua of the XXVI century or the Castle of San Ventura, as well as examples of popular houses and houses of the wealthy classes, such as the Casona del Portón. In the locality there are also two archaeological sites: «The Atalayita» and «The Junquillo».

But perhaps most striking of Antigua is its characteristic Mill, a circular building built with masonry walls and a wooden machinery, which currently houses an exhibition hall and a craft shop, in addition to hosting the facilities of the Museum of Cheese Fuerteventura, dedicated to the delicious cheese.

 

Tefia

To visit the little village of Tefia is to discover a traditional old Aboriginal settlement with houses with Berber roofs, in which it emphasizes the Hermitage of San Agustín of Century SVIII. To get the idea of how you lived in it in the past, in the settlement is the Alcogida Ecomuseum. In short, a visit that makes us go back in time and browse between beach and beach, quite recommendable.

 

A little adrenaline

One of the most fun things to do on the island is to enjoy any of its alternatives in terms of sports activities, from kiteboarding to climbing or mountain biking, to buggy, snorkel, scuba diving and windsurfing. .. in practically all the localities and beaches you will find a center specialized in this type of activities that will help you complete the trip with unrepeatable experiences. Its food

Fuerteventura’s cuisine is famous for its great variety of fish (try the Sancocho), the roasted kid’s meat with firewood or the pimento stew, its majorero cheeses, white or paprika, or the potatoes wrinkled with mojo and gofio kneaded. They say that in the town of Cotillo you can find excellent restaurants to catch fish, while in Antigua we will find the most variety of offer.

To enjoy all these dishes and much more, these are the restaurants you can not miss on the island:

In Cotillo:

• The Roque de los Pescadores, to delight with the fish on the back and the sirloin of the house before a breathtaking view. At Caleta Street, 73.
• La Vaca Azul, In the old pier, with an excellent grilled octopus with mojo. At Requena Street 9.
• El Mirador, Famous for its rice and its kid, in the Muelle de los Pescadores Street 19.

 

In Puerto del Rosario:

In Corralejo:

• Avenida, to order fish and kid of the country. At General Prim Street, 11.

• El Caletón, with very good wrinkled potatoes and specialized in the octopus to the vinaigrette. At Avenida del Puerto, s/n.

 

En la Carretera General, 94:

If you fancy something to drink, the best thing about Fuerteventura is to do it at sunset. In Ajuy there is a bar called Sunset which they say is one of the best to do it. But there are also good choices Aqua or Waikiki Beach Club in Corralejo.

 

Special places to sleep

It is true that the most popular on the island are the large All-Inclusive resorts in which to retire and not leave … but there are other options and alternatives for those who want to enjoy Fuerteventura in a different way, among which I highlight especially these three proposals:

To finish the post, we only have to think about the things to put in the suitcase. Fuerteventura is to spend the day on the beach with as little as possible, but the afternoon lends itself to the walks and excursions and the night to go out to take something to its little villages … here I propose some ideas.
