Allá por el 2009, a una marca de cerveza se le ocurrió aprovechar la llegada del buen tiempo lanzando un spot mediterráneo en el que un joven perdido llegaba por primera vez a Formentera y vivía el verano de su vida. Ha pasado ya tiempo desde aquello y aún así cada año, más o menos al inicio del mes de Junio, sale un nuevo spot con un nuevo destino y vuelvo a sentir esa extraña mezcla entre amor y odio a estos anuncios que me hacen querer teletransportarme al verano de manera inmediata, siendo consciente de que aún faltan un par de mesecitos aún para hacer el sueño realidad…
No me extraña que el inicio de todo fuera Formentera. Esencia pura, sencillez, y lo más importante: un lado virgen y salvaje que a pesar del paso del tiempo se mantiene prácticamente intacto, como si la isla quisiera pasar inadvertida y escondida a la alteración de la mano del hombre. Y, ¿sabéis lo que os digo? Ojalá se mantenga así siempre, como un oasis de relajación y tranquilidad frente a la mayoría de las bulliciosas playas españolas.
Formentera son tan solo 82 km2. Un pequeño rincón en el mundo manejable, sencillo, con otro aire y un espíritu diferente: caminos asalvajados, dunas, playas caribeñas y cristalinas, slow living, bosques de pinos, paisajes memorables y puestas de sol únicas. Enseguida te adaptas a su forma de vivir y a esa ausencia de preocupaciones…inundándote las ganas de dejarte llevar por un estilo de vida donde triunfa la simplicidad.

1. Adaptándonos a su Lifestyle
La mejor manera de experimentar la esencia de la isla es olvidarse de las formalidades. Una vez pongáis el pie en su puerto quitaros el reloj, poneros las chanclas y recurrid al medio de transporte por excelencia en la isla: la bicicleta. Por unos 8€ al día de alquiler, os podréis sentir como la protagonista de Lucía y el Sexo y recorrer la única carretera de Norte a Sur, hasta llegar al Faro de Cap de Barbaria. A medida que vayáis pedaleando por los rústicos caminos de la isla rodeados de sus espectaculares paisajes iréis dejando atrás las preocupaciones y la libertad se irá apoderando poco a poco de vosotros… ahora sí… bienvenidos al espíritu de Formentera!
2. Inolvidables puestas de sol
En Formentera, uno de los mayores acontecimientos sociales del día es reunirse para despedir al sol. La isla tiene cientos de rincones con un encanto especial para disfrutar de este momento, uno de los más famosos y animados es el chiringuito Pirata Bus, en la playa de Migjorn. Pero también los hay mucho más íntimos y relajados como el Cap de Barbaria, la playa de Illetes, o la terraza del Hostal La Savina en s’Estany des Peix.
3. Playas paradisiacas
Si hay algo por lo que destaca Formentera es por sus aguas turquesas y cristalinas, tan transparentes que a veces es innecesario usar gafas de snorkel. Aunque la isla tiene mil playas y calas para todos los gustos, éste es mi top 3:
- Es Caló des Morts es para mí uno de los lugares con mayor encanto y autenticidad: una cala recóndita casi virgen y de dificil acceso con una de las mejores vistas panorámicas.Un talud rocoso y varios varaderos artesanales para barcas pequeñas le dan ese toque tan especial y único… la mejor cala de la isla!
- Cala Saona es una pequeña cala al oeste, encajada en un acantilado y prácticamente virgen, rodeada de montañas, pinares y dunas. Ideal para ver el atardecer.
- Ses Illetes es la playa más famosa (y también más visitada), está enclavada en el parque natural de Ses Salines, en la parte Norte de la isla y muy cercana al Islote de Espalmador, al que se realizan excursiones para disfrutar de sus barros y lodos. Este es un entorno virgen rodeado de sabinas y vegetación , y un paraiso para submarinistas por sus fondos marinos de Posidonia oceánica.
Además de estas tres increíbles playas, os recomiendo pasear a pie o en bici por el Estany des Peix, una pequeña laguna con un estrecha apertura al mar al lado de la Savina que permite la entrada de pequeñas embarcaciones para su fondeo y que tiene algunos tramos de playa donde poder bañarse.
4.Recorriendo la isla
Pero Formentera es más que playas, os propongo que cojáis la bici y exploréis todos sus rincones:
- Torres y faros: La Torre del Cap de Barbaria, a 65 m sobre el mar, con unas vistas espectaculares. En este lugar os vais sentir totalmente libres y aislados del mundo asomándoos a sus acantilados. Al final del camino veréis el famoso Faro de Barbaria, con una cueva subterránea (la Cueva Forada) con agujeros en su superficie y varias ruinas megalíticas que da acceso directo al mar. También en la isla encontraréis el Faro de la Mola, el más importante y antiguo de Formentera, construido sobre un acantilado . Es un lugar mágico y muy especial.
- Miradores: El mirador de Formentera: una parada obligada! Está en la carretera de La Mola, kilómetro 14.3, y permite contemplar una de las mejores perspectivas de la isla. Para olvidarse por un momento del Mundo y dejarse llevar.
- Pueblecitos con magia: Es Caló de Sant Agustí es un pueblo de pescadores al sur de la isla, antes de llegar a La Mola, y su rasgo característico es el intenso color turquesa de sus aguas. Sant Ferran de ses Roques, en medio de la isla, tiene un ambiente muy auténtico con música en directo en la plaza y un espíritu un tanto hippie. Por último, San Françesc, la capital, es un pequeño y animado pueblo con un mercadillo curioso, tiendecitas chulas y características calles blancas por donde perderse dando un paseo.
- Paisajes únicos: Punta sa Pedrera es un desierto de piedra que en su unión con el mar da como resultado un curioso paisaje de extrañas formas de roca y acantilados cortados por cuevas semisubmarina y piscinas naturales. Desde aquí podréis ver la isla de Ibiza.
5. Comiendo descalzos en la arena
Con tanto pedaleo, seguramente os entren ganas de reponer fuerzas… Me encantan los restaurantes de Formentera por su toque casual y natural, aunque la isla también tiene establecimientos de alto nivel para ocasiones más especiales. Aquí os dejo 5 alternativas que me gustan mucho, para diferentes momentos y situaciones:
- Desayunos relajados: el Café del Lago, en la Savina (Avenida del Mediterráneo 20), un lugar que suelen frecuentar los lugareños (algo que a mí me da siempre muchas pistas). Aunque es un restaurante de comidas y cenas, tiene un encanto especial para desayunar y en general su relación-precio es bastante adecuada. También para desayunar en esta zona, podéis ir al café Formentera Bakery (C/ Mare de deu del Carme,1 )
- El chiringuito más auténtico: Kiosko Bartolo, perdido en la playa de Migjorn y con tan solo cinco mesas, es un lugar sencillo ideal para perderse cerca de un lugar tan especial como Caló des Morts y hacer del día un plan redondo. Excelente pescado del día a muy buen precio, hamburguesas y sandwiches, con las olas del mar prácticamente rozándote los pies.
- El mítico en la isla: Fonda Pepe (Sant Ferrán de Ses Roques). Peculiar y curioso, muy casero y siempre hasta los topes. No esperéis un lugar glamouroso ni tampoco precios demasiado baratos, pero es una parada obligatoria en la isla para comer buen pescado, pulpo, calamares… en un entorno variopinto y muy setentero.
- El clásico marítimo con vistas: Es Caló, con su espectacular terraza de techos de cañizo en una calita de la Mola (C/ Vicari Joan Marí, 14 Es Caló de Sant Agustí). Su carta es secilla y centrada en el producto y destaca por sus deliciosos arroces, el bogavante o la langosta.
- Casual y alegre: Ca Na Pepa, en Sant Francesc. Me encanta su decoración relajada, su tranquilidad y su ambiente. Para desayunos, cenas o comidas informales en la plaza del pueblo.
- Y el más reconocido: Can Carles (Venda de sa Miranda Cala Saona. San Francesc) Distinguido, fashion, y muy de moda entre los foodies. Pescados, pasta fresca, carpaccios, especialidades italianas y carnes a la parrilla en un ambiente al mismo tiempo elegante y rústico. Muy chic.
6. La vida alrededor de las playas
Prácticamente todo lo que pasa mientras hay luz del sol en la isla sucede alrededor de las playas. Os van a encantar sus chiringuitos, cabañas y minibares por su buen rollo, su estilo rústico y relajado y su gran ambiente para poder tomar algo junto al mar:
- Blue Bar (Carretera San Ferran a La Mola km 7,9, Platja Migjorn) es de mis preferidos: divertido y con muy buen rollo, y en el que también se pueden hacer picoteos informales.
- Pirata Bus (playa de es Arenals, Migjorn), es uno de los chiringuitos más carismáticos y con más solera de Formentera. Atmósfera hippie, buena música y uno de los puntos más famosos para ver la puesta de sol con la música de fondo de Andrea Boccelli.
- Beso Beach (Playa de Cavall d’en Borràs. Illetas), el sitio de moda de la isla, un chiringuito con tres ambientes y en el que se pueden tomar cocktails y copas (caros) hasta aproximadamente las 22h.
- El tiburón, cerca de Ses Illetes, es un chill out muy versátil en el que podréis desde tomar nachos con queso hasta escuchar buena musica y, sobre todo, disfrutar de su gran ubicación para ver la puesta de sol.
- Kiosko 62, (Camino de Can Simonet I, Playa Migjorn), muy famoso por sus pomadas (una bebida típica menorquina que mezcla Gin Xoriquer con limonada), con buena música y cerveza a buenos precios.
7. Durmiendo en plena naturaleza
Ojo, ya os aviso que Formentera no es un lugar barato para alojarse: es un lugar pequeño, donde las reservas vuelan, y especialmente en verano le sacan un buen partido. Aún así, buscando bien y con antelación, podréis encontrar cosas interesantes. Aquí una selección variada de precios y propuestas en la isla:
- Hostal La Savina, (Avinguda Mediterránea, 20-40, La Savina). Un establecimiento familiar ideal frente a la playa, con atardeceres impresionantes y muy buena opción para familias con niños pequeños. Habitaciones a partir de 65€.
- B&B Casa Manuel, es un B&B muy cuidado, familiar y con mucho encanto con precios asequibles a 1 km. de Cala Saona en el que os sentiréis como en casa. Una casa típica en una finca rústica rodeada de porches y donde destacan los desayunos. Unos 130€ la suite.
- Hotel Tahití, (Fonoll Marí 8-28, Platja d’Es Pujols, recién renovado y con una posición privilegiada en la playa de Es Pujols. Moderno, simple, confortable y con una idea de servicio y atención de los pequeños detalles. Eso sí, en temporada alta las habitaciones son dificiles de encontrar y no son baratas.
- Hotel Formentera Yoga, si os gusta el yoga, este es vuestro lugar: un pequeño complejo de 22 habitaciones dedicado al yoga y a la tranquilidad. Habitaciones espaciosas, vistas al mar y relajación absoluta. Su precio: desde 1.100€ por una semana con alojamiento y cursos incluido.
- La Masía de Formentera, (Carretera de la Savina a la Mola km. 4,5), de los pocos hoteles con encanto y de gran lujo en el interior de la isla en los que pasarse el día en la piscina, disfrutar del jacuzzi y darse un masaje tailandés. Los desayunos son a la carta y puedes pedirles que te lo sirvan en la habitación a la hora que tú quieras. 100% desconexión. Unos 240€
8. De Shopping boho
Las tiendas de Formentera son una pasada, me recuerdan mucho a las de Tarifa, solo que quizás haya más variedad. Así que reservaos una tarde para recorrerlas porque merecen la pena. Además, a lo largo de la semana, se celebran mercadillos como el de la Mola, el de es Pujols o se montan puestecitos hippies en el puerto de la Savina
- Mercadillos: los miércoles y los domingos desde las cuatro de la tarde hasta las diez de la noche abre el el mercado hippie “El Pilar de la Mola”, y de manera similar a las Dalias en Ibiza, es fácil encontrar conciertos improvisados y un ambiente muy distendido. Hay muchos productos artesanales de diferentes materiales: madera, plata, piedra… y alrededor suelen ponerse algunos food trucks para hacer un alto y tomar algo. De Mayo a Septiembre a partir de las 20h, Es Pujols abre a lo largo del paseo marítimo sus puestos hippies para buscar tesoros, daros una vuelta que siempre se encuentra algo interesante!
- Tiendas de moda y complementos: las más bonitas y conocidas son Full Moon, Banjhara, Los Encantes, Vintage, Las Brisas o Balafia. Sus entradas y fachadas son una chulada, encaladas en blanco, y en el interior seleccionan prendas muy del rollo de la isla con gran variedad de marcas y precios. Si estáis por La Mola, visitad también la tienda del joyero artesano Majoral, una de las más bonitas de la isla, en la que sus piezas reflejan la esencia más mediterránea de Formentera.
- Tiendas de decoración: De camino al faro de La Mola veréis la tienda Can Xicu, un paraíso de artículos de decoración con muebles de madera, mobiliario industrial y piezas únicas muy bien seleccionadas. Y Catalina House, un lugar que plasma de manera única el estilo de vida relajado y pausado de la isla con maderas y materiales naturales.
9. Experiencias, actividades y turismo activo en la isla
Además de las rutas en bici, otra manera de descubrir los rincones más secretos de Formentera son las travesías que organiza el Centro Naútico de Formentera: en kayak o en pequeñas embarcaciones, llegaréis a los rincones más mágicos, escondidos y auténticos.
Si os gusta el buceo, en el Centro de Submarinismo Vellmarí os organizarán increibles inmerisiones y su biólogo marino y director fotográfico de National Geogroaphic.
Y si sois runners, en la isla se suele correr la media maratón desde el Faro de la Mola hasta el Puerto de la Savina: un total de 21,1 kms. recorriendo la isla de Este a Oeste.
10. Distressed Looks
Olvidaros en casa vuestras mejores galas y llenad la maleta de prendas casual y relajadas, mucho mejor si además tienen algún toque hippie! Formentera es para poder disfrutarla con libertad y sin ataduras, así que aquí algunos looks sencillos con los que sentiros cómodos:

Adapting to the Lifestyle
The best way to experience the essence of the island is to forget the formalities. Once you set your foot in port take away the clock, put your flip-flops on and call upon the means of transport par excellence on the island: the bicycle. In Formentera, one of the biggest social events of the day is to meet to dismiss the sun at the end of the day. The island has hundreds of places with special charm to enjoy this moment, one of the most famous and lively beach bar is the Pirate Bus on the beach of Mitjorn. But there are also more intimate and relaxed as the Cap de Barbaria, Illetes beach or the terrace of the Hostal La Savina in s’Estany des Peix.
3. Paradise beaches:
If there’s one thing that stands out is Formentera turquoise and crystal clear waters so transparent that sometimes it is unnecessary to use snorkel goggles. Although the island has a thousand beaches and coves for all tastes, this is my top 3:
- Caló des Morts is for me one of the most charming places: an almost virgin and difficult access to one of the best panoramic views.A rocky slope secluded bay and several small boats craft docks to give that special touch and unique … the best cove on the island!
- Cala Saona is a small cove west of the island, embedded in a cliff and almost virgin, surrounded by mountains, pine forests and dunes. Ideal for watching the sunset.
- Ses Illetes is the most famous (and most visited) beach, it is nestled in the natural park of Ses Salines, in the northern part of the island and very close to the islet of Espalmador, which excursions to enjoy its pimples and sludge are made. This is a pristine environment surrounded by junipers and vegetation, and a paradise for divers for its oceanic Posidonia seabed.
In addition to these three amazing beaches, I recommend walking or cycling in the Estany des Peix, a small lagoon with a narrow opening to the sea next to the Savina allowing small boats to anchor and has some sections with bathing beach.4.Touring the island
But there is something more than beaches in Formentera, I propose you take your bikes and explore every corner:
- Towers and searchlights: The Tower of Cap de Barbaria, 65 m above the sea, with spectacular views. In this place you are going to feel totally isolated. At the end of the road you will see the famous Lighthouse Barbaria, with an underground cave (the Cave Forada) with holes in its surface and several megalithic ruins that gives direct access to the sea. Also on the island you will find the Faro de la Mola, the largest and oldest of Formentera, built on a cliff. It is a magical and very special place.
- Viewpoints: The viewpoint of Formentera: a must stop! It is on the road to La Mola, km 14.3, and allows you to see one of the best views of the island. To forget for a moment the world and let go.
- Magic Villages: Es Caló de Sant Agusti is a fishing village south of the island, before arriving in La Mola, and its characteristic feature is the intense turquoise of its waters. Sant Ferran de ses Roques, in the middle of the island, has a very authentic atmosphere with live music in the square and a somewhat hippie spirit. Finally, San Françesc, the capital, is a small and lively market town with a curious, cool shops and characteristic white streets to walk around.
- Unique landscapes: Punta sa Pedrera is a stone desert at its junction with the sea results in a curious landscape of strange shapes of rock and cliffs cut by semi-submarine caves and natural pools. From here you can see the island of Ibiza.
5. Eating barefood in the sand
With so much pedaling, you will surely come forward to regain strength … I love Formentera restaurants for its casual and natural touch, but the island also has high-level facilities for special occasions. Here you have 5 alternatives that I like, for different moments and situations:
- Relaxed breakfast: Café del Lago, la Savina (Mediterranean Avenue 20), a place frequented by locals (something that always gives me many clues). Although it is a restaurant with lunch and dinner, it has a special charm for breakfast and generally their relationship for money is quite adequate. Also for breakfast in this area, you can go to Formentera Bakery (1 Mare de deu del Carme street)
- The most authentic beach bar: Kiosko Bartolo, lost on the beach of Migjorn and with only five tables, is ideal for a simple place near miss such a special place as Caló des Morts and make the day a round plan. Great fish of the day at a great price, burgers and sandwiches, with the waves almost grazing you feet.
- Mythical in the island: Fonda Pepe (Sant Ferrán de Ses Roques). Peculiar and curious, very homely and alway. Do not expect a glamorous place nor too cheap prices, but it is a mandatory stop on the island to eat good fish, octopus, squid … in a colorful and very seventies environment.
- Classic sea view: Es Caló, with its spectacular roof terrace hurdle in a cove of the Mola (14 Vicari Joan Marí Stret, Es Caló de Sant Agustí). Its cuisine is simple and focused on the product and known for its spectacular rices and lobsters.
- Casual and happy: Ca Na Pepa, in Sant Francesc. I love her relaxed decor, its tranquility and ambience. For breakfast, dinner or casual dining in the main town square.
- And the most recognized: Can Carles (Venda de sa Miranda Cala Saona. San Francesc) Distinguished and very fashionable among foodies. Fish, fresh pasta, carpaccio, Italian specialties and grilled meats in an environment elegant and rustic at the same time. Very chic.
6. Life around the beach
In Formentera, virtually everything while there is sunlight happens around the beaches. You’ll love the bars, cabins and mini-bars on the island for good roll, rustic and relaxed style and great atmosphere to have a drink by the sea
- Blue Bar (Road San Ferran to La Mola km 7,9, Platja Migjorn) it is one of my favorites: fun and good vibes, and which can also make informal pecking.
- Pirata Bus (es Arenals beach, Migjorn), It is one of the most charismatic and most traditional of Formentera beach bars. Hippie atmosphere, good music and one of the most famous to watch the sunset listening to Andrea Boccelli music.

Formentera is not a cheap place to stay: it is a small place, where reserves fly, and especially in summer will take a good match. Still, looking well and in advance, you can find interesting things. Here a wide selection of prices and proposals on the island:
- La Savina Hostal, (Avinguda Mediterránea, 20-40, La Savina). An ideal family beachfront setting with stunning sunsets and very good choice for families with young children. Rooms from 65 €.
- B&B Casa Manuel, It is a family and charming B&B with affordable prices 1 km. from Cala Saona in which you will feel at home. A typical home in a farmhouse surrounded by porches and which include breakfast. 130 € the suite.
- Tahití Hotel, (Fonoll Marí 8-28, Platja d’Es Pujols) newly renovated and with a privileged position on the beach of Es Pujols. Modern, simple, comfortable and with a sense of service and attention to small details. Of course, in high season rooms are hard to find and expensive.

9. Experiences, activities and active tourism
In addition to the bike routes, another way to discover the most secret corners of Formentera are the cruises organized by the Formentera Nautical Center: by kayak or small boat, you will reach the most magical, hidden and genuine corners.
If you like diving, Vellmarí Diving Center organizes incredible dives. His photographic marine biologist is also director of National Geogroaphic.
And if you are runners on the island it is usually spread the half marathon from the Faro de la Mola to Puerto de la Savina: a total of 21.1 kms. touring the island from east to west.
