Buenos días, Mundo!

Pues sí, ya es tradición en TrippingBites… el nuevo anuncio de Estrella Damm acaba de emitirse en TV y esto – como bien sabéis los trippers más fieles –  no significa otra cosa más que el pistoletazo de salida para empezar a pensar en… verano!!!! De manera automática mi cabeza se pone en modo sol, playa y good vibes, sin darme cuenta canturreo canciones animadas y cuento los días para hacer la maleta hacia muy muy lejos… qué queréis que os diga, no lo puedo remediar, es mi estación preferida del año!!!

Así que ya intuiréis que el destino de esta semana es un lugar de evasión, de ocio y relax que inmediatamente nos transporta a las vacaciones... estuve dudando un buen rato sobre qué isla decidirme primero, cualquiera de las Cícladas son un acierto seguro y cada una de ellas tiene su propio rollo y personalidad, pero finalmente lo tuve claro: Santorini o Kalitsi, como la conocían los fenicios, es un destino mágico, embrujador, chic, pintoresco… inolvidable. No podía resistirme a publicarlo en el blog y volver a recordar aquellos días entre sus acantilados, tejados azules sobre casitas encaladas, conociendo a su gente y disfrutando de su gastronomía.

Santorini te encandila poco a poco y te va introduciendo en su atmósfera serena y calmada como quien no quiere la cosa, enamorándote de tal manera que nada más irte estás deseando regresar. Si estáis dispuestos a dejaros seducir por sus encantos, seguid leyendo este post. Esta semana…

 

Sucumbimos a los encantos de Santorini 

 

1. Una isla diferente

Lo primero que me gustaría contaros de Santorini es que es bastante peculiar… peculiar en morfología y en paisaje. Hace muchíiiisimos años una gran erupción hizo que la mitad de la isla se hundiera bajo el mar, quedando en la superficie una forma de media luna que va ascendiendo con unas vertiginosas cuestas – y escalones- de lava solidificada hacia Thira o Firá, la capital, que corona y preside desde las alturas. Podéis esperaros entonces un paisaje accidentado, lleno de abismos y acantilados, e incluso playas de imposible acceso como Red Beach, que más que una playa parece un escenario más propio del planeta Marte. En definitiva, a lo que voy, es que hay que hacerse a la idea de que no es la típica islita facilona y accesible que todos tenemos en la cabeza o en el ideal. Es más, pensad que una de las alternativas más interesantes – además de divertida – para recorrerla puede ser un quad… nada más bajaros del Ferry en el puerto  (a 5,5h en Ferry rápido desde El Pireo en Atenas) encontraréis multitud de lugares para alquilarlos. Ah! y por si os preguntáis si va a ser suficiente para recorrer la isla, pensad que Santorini solo tiene unos 73 kms… eso sí, cargad bien de gasolina que las gasolineras son un bien muy escaso en la isla 😉

 

2. Oia

Una vez llegados y subidos a nuestro quad, no puedo más que recomendaros ir a Oia. Decir que Oia es un rincón secreto en esta isla es una tontería como la copa de un pino. De hecho, es el lugar por el que se conoce en todo el Mundo a Santorini: con sus típicos tejados abovedados suspendidos sobre el Egeo. Si nada más llegar visitáis este lugar, el impacto que os dejará en la memoria para siempre será único y, creedme, nada comparable al que os podría dejar Thira… la idea que os haréis de Santorini desde cada ciudad es muy diferente.

Para mí Oia puede que sea el pueblo con mayor encanto que he visto en todo el Mundo y a lo mejor pensáis que exagero (hay muchos pueblos encantadores perdidos en el planeta)… pero el hecho de estar literalmente colgado en un acantilado con unas vistas surrealistas de la caldera y contar con las más espectaculares puestas de sol suman muchos puntos. Irradia espiritualidad, calma y energía contenida.

Lo mejor de todo es reservar alojamiento allí (si no queréis dejar temblando la cartera, mejor en la zona del puerto y la bahía de Ammoudi, bajando un camino de escaleras, donde hay un pequeño hotelito sin grandes lujos pero con unas vistas increíbles de la vecina isla de Thirasia) y dejarse llevar al menos un par de días entre sus cúpulas, iglesias, tiendas y restaurantes, caminando tranquilamente por su calle peatonal central.

Pero que Oia sea el lugar turístico por excelencia de Santorini no quiere decir que no haya pequeños secretos que se oculten ante las grandes masas…  como colarse entre los tejados y buscar un lugar único y solitario donde disfrutar del amanecer (si, del amanecer! si la puesta de sol es bonita, la salida no lo es menos y sobre todo: no está masificada), relajarse con un cocktail de tarde en el chill out Khataros Lounge de la playa de Khataros, o disfrutar del pequeño pueblo de pescadores de Ammoudi, comiendo pescado recién capturado en alguna de sus tabernas.

 

 

3. Las playas

Hay una cosa que aún no he mencionado lo suficiente pero que es fundamental que llevéis interiorizado antes de visitarla: Santorini está plagada de turistas, y esto ha hecho que inexorablemente se haya sumado recientemente a la lista de los 8 destinos “que más odian a los turistas“ junto a Amsterdam, Barcelona, Cinque Terre o Buthan, entre otros. Esto es especialmente notable cuando visitamos sus playas, y por ello me gustaría hablaros de algunas menos conocidas en las que os va a ser más fácil relajaros o al menos poder extender la toalla.

Todo el mundo habla de Red Beach, la playa roja de Santorini. Ok, no está mal, pero debe ser que guardo mal recuerdo de ella porque su arena tiñó de un rojo inamovible toallas, bañadores y sandalias dejándonos un recuerdo de la visita para siempre. Lo que no todo el mundo hace tan a menudo es coger las pequeñas embarcaciones que salen cada media hora de la playa roja hacia la aledaña White Beach – Aspri en griego- , a mi gusto mucho más pintoresca y espectacular, y a la que solo se puede acceder en barco. También la lava es protagonista, ya que forma grandes montículos blancos y grises sobre el mar. Es mucho más salvaje y también poco accesible, pero por ello también más recóndita y menos masificada.

Otra playa casi desconocida y virgen es la playa de Koulumbus o de Cabo Kolumbo, a unos 6 kms. de Oia, y a la que se accede desde un sendero nada fácil de lava. Es una playa de piedra pómez y guijarros – imprescindible llevar escarpines o algún calzado adecuado – exótica, tranquila, y en la que apenas encontraréis algún nudista o bañista solitario.

Y para terminar con el listado de playas aisladas y recónditas, la ya mencionada Playa de Khataros a la que se puede llegar a pie desde Oia o Ammoudi.

 

 

4. Pueblecitos mágicos

No solo de Oia vive Santorini. En la isla hay otros ejemplos de localidades no menos  encantadoras, y prueba de ello son Pyrgos o Imerovigli. 

Pyrgos es un pequeño pueblo escalonado, antigua capital de la isla, construido en la cima de una colina – cómo no– y que va ascendiendo hasta llegar a un castillo veneciano en unas calles laberínticas en las que lo más fácil es terminar perdiéndose. El pueblo conserva el aire más típico de las Cícladas y ha mantenido intacta su esencia pasando durante muchos años desapercibido a los turistas, aunque vuelve a emerger de sus cenizas gracias a la labor de su teniente alcalde en la difusión de su vistosa Semana Santa.

Imerovigli es en realidad la continuación de Thira, apenas a dos kilómetros, y, al contrario que ésta, es mucho más tranquilo y acogedor. Además de su bonito acantilado, se abre hacia el interior donde cuenta con las más auténticas tabernas y restaurantes. Es una opción ideal para alojarse cerca del centro y cuenta con uno de los establecimientos hoteleros más chic y glamourosos de la isla, el impresionante Hotel Grace. Y, si os gusta andar y queréis llevaros una experiencia inolvidable de la isla, desde Imerovigli parte uno de los caminos más increíbles de unas 2 horas hacia Oia bordeando el acantilado.

 

 

5. El recinto arqueológico de Akrotiri 

Estamos en Grecia… no está mal visitar algún yacimiento como el de Akrotiri, que muestra una civilización con más de 3.000 años de antigüedad  llena de leyendas como la que dice que en realidad se trata de los restos de la Atlántida. La ciudad se conserva en perfectas condiciones gracias a las toneladas de cenizas que la sepultaron y muestra hasta sus casas de dos y tres pisos, un concepto más que avanzado para la época. Lo mejor de la visita es que tan solo cuesta 6€ la entrada reducida, y que al salir estamos al lado de la playa roja para poder darnos un chapuzón.

 

6. Nea Kameni y Hot Springs

Santorini también tiene su lado aventurero, y una de las experiencias que mejor lo refleja sería la subida al volcán Nea Kameni para terminar bañándose en las aguas termales de Hot Springs. Organizan excursiones de unas 3 horas con un precio en torno a los 20€ desde el puerto viejo de Thira a las 11h de la mañana en un barco que atraca en la bahía del volcán (Erinia) para subir por un sendero a la cima para ver los cráteres activos y después alcanzar la isla de Palea Kameni con los barros naturales llamados “hot Springs“ y darse un baño termal en la bahía de Agios Nikolaos, donde la temperatura del agua fluctúa entre los 30 y los 35 grados.

 

7. Tavernas, cantinas y restaurantes

Uno de los grandes alicientes para visitar las Cícladas, o cualquier rincón de Grecia en general, es su gastronomía. En Santorini vais a encontrar desde exclusivos restaurantes con vistas privilegiadas al Egeo hasta modestas tavernas muy económicas pasando por pequeños negocios de los típicos Gyros. Aquí mi Top 5 de la isla:

 

 

Para repetir y repetir, Metaxy Mas Tavern, en Pyrgos

Esta taberna en el pueblecito de Pyrgos es bastante difícil de encontrar pero la expedición merece la pena. El lugar es de lo más auténtico, pintoresco y singular, alejado de la zona turística y con una terraza de infarto en pleno valle.  Pero lo verdaderamente espectacular es su comida, de gran calidad y con un precio muy adecuado, así como su vino de la casa. Para terminar, te sirven unos chupitos de grappa caseros muy ricos. Lo que más me gustó fue el queso feta en vuelto en masa con miel… mmmm!!

 

Para disfrutar de la comida casera tradicional griega frente al mar, Taverna Vulcano, en Perissa

Un lugar bastante barato para comer justo al lado del mar y de lo mejor que existe en el paseo marítimo de Perissa. De nuevo, un queso feta increíble, y a resaltar sus setas a la crema o las ensaladas. A pesar de estar prácticamente en el mar, es un lugar en el que es más probable encontrar a gente local que a turistas, cosa que a mí siempre me da mucha garantía…

 

Para probar los mejores gyros de la isla, Pito Gyros en Oia

Si vais paseando y de repente os encontráis un sitio abarrotado de gente… paraos a investigar!! En este caso, descubrimos Pito Gyros, el lugar donde hacen los mejores gyros de Santorini. Un lugar muy animado, alegre, pintoresco… e incluso bonito! para disfrutar de unos gyros muy sabrosos acompañados de una cerveza griega de barril a precios de risa. Más que recomendable!!

 

Para disfrutar de la famosa puesta de sol de Santorini,  The Wine Bar en Imerovigli

El Hotel Heliotopos en Imerovigli tiene un restaurante ubicado dentro de una cueva con una luz muy baja y bastante romántico llamado The Wine Bar. El lugar cuenta con una buena carta de vinos y de comidas, y para mí tiene mucho más encanto como bar que como restaurante, ideal para disfrutar de una buena copa de vino durante la puesta de sol. Si os animáis a comer o cenar, su comida está bastante buena pero quizás es más escasa en la comparativa con otros restaurantes de la isla.

 

Y para un momento especial, Ambrosia Restaurant, en Oia  

El restaurante tiene una ubicación espectacular con vistas de la caldera, es super romántico  y su carta tiene una cocina más elaborada, con lo cual es más exclusivo y recomendable para celebrar algún momento especial. El precio por persona ronda los 60-70€ y al ser un sitio pequeño es mejor reservar mesa porque se las rifan. Lo mejor de la carta son los calamares con ouzo y lo encontraréis fácilmente en la calle principal de Oia, bajando unas escaleras antes de la plaza de la iglesia.

 

 

8. Y hoteles inolvidables

Uno de los grandes aciertos de nuestro viaje a Santorini fue nuestro hotel… todavía recuerdo aquellos desayunos a orillas de la piscina sobre un acantilado al Mar Egeo con un yogur griego hecho a mano que nunca he vuelto a probar igual… os digo esto porque es cierto que el alojamiento en Santorini no es de los más baratos, pero merece la pena buscar un sitio un poco más especial porque vais a recordarlo para siempre. Sé que no todos – yo la primera- nos podemos permitir alojarnos en el Grace, pero si existen alternativas que pueden hacer de nuestra estancia en la isla un momento inolvidable… Os comento algunas que me gustan mucho a ver si os convencen…

 

 

Rena’s Suites, Fira

Fue nuestro hotel en Santorini, en Fira, y como os he comentado nos encantó. Por un precio de 80€ la habitación doble, buenas instalaciones y muy cerca del centro, lo que más nos gustó de él fue su enorme piscina asomada al Egeo y el desayuno. En Main Street, Fira. 

 

Calliope House, Pyrgos

Son unos apartamentos muy monos excavados en la piedra y encantadoras terrazas, algunas de ellas con pequeñas piscinas o jacuzzis. Todos los apartamentos cuentan con cocina lo cual anima a preparar comidas con productos griegos recién comprados y disfrutarlos rodeados de las increíbles vistas del balcón, desde 97€ el apartamento para 2 personas.

 

Manos Small World, Firostefani

Y finalmente este hotelito boutique encantador y tranquilo en Firostefani al borde de la caldera está a unos 15 minutos a pie de Fira y destaca tanto por sus completos desayunos como por sus increíbles vistas. Su precio es de 145€ la noche con el desayuno incluido.

 

Para terminar con el post, y pensando en pasar unos días en la isla, no creo que os descubra nada nuevo con estos looks, pero es que no puedo evitar pensar en vestidos blancos y ligeros para la maleta…

Good Morning, World!

Well, it is tradition in TrippingBites … the new advertisement of Estrella Damm has just been broadcast on TV and this – as the most faithful trippers know – means the kick-off to start thinking about .. . summer!!!! Automatically my head is put in sun, beach and good vibes mode, without realizing I sing animated songs and I count the days to make the suitcase towards very far …I can not remedy it, it is my favorite season of the year!!!

You will intuit that the destination of this week is a place of escape, leisure and relaxation that immediately takes us to the holidays … I was hesitating on which island to post first, any of the Cyclades are good and each one of them has its own personality, but finally I was clear: Santorini -or Kalitsi, as the Phoenicians knew it- is a magical, bewitching, chic, picturesque … unforgettable destination. I could not resist publishing it on the blog and remembering those days among its cliffs, blue roofs on whitewashed houses, landscapes, meeting their people and enjoying their gastronomy.

Santorini enchants you little by little and introduces you in its calm atmosphere as if it does not want the thing, falling in love in such a way that nothing more to go away you are wishing to return. If you are willing to let yourself be seduced by its charms, keep reading this post. This week…

 

We succumb to the charms of Santorini

 

1. A different Island

The first thing I would like to tell you about Santorini is that it is quite peculiar … peculiar in morphology and landscape. Many years ago a great eruption caused half the island to sink under the sea, leaving on the surface a crescent shape that ascends with vertiginous slopes – and steps – of solidified lava towards Thira or Firá, the capital, which presides from the heights. You can expect then a rugged landscape, full of abysses and cliffs, and even beaches difficult to access like Red Beach, which more than a beach looks like a scenario more typical of the planet Mars. In short, it is not the typical easy and accessible island that we all have in the head. What’s more, think that one of the most interesting alternatives – as well as a fun one – can be a quad … just get off the ferry at the port (at 5.5h in fast ferry from Piraeus in Athens) you will find some places to rent them. Ah! And if you ask if it will be enough to travel the island, think Santorini only has about 73 kms … and charge well of gasoline that gas stations are a very scarce good on the island;)

 

2. Oia

Once arrived and boarded our quad, I can only recommend you go to Oia. To say that Oia is a secret corner on this island is silly. In fact, it is the place by which it is known all over the world to Santorini: with its typical vaulted roofs suspended over the Aegean. If you arrive at this place, the impact that will leave you in memory forever will be unique and, believe me, nothing comparable to what you could leave Thira … the idea that you will make Santorini from each city is very different.

For me Oia may be the most charming town I’ve seen all over the world and maybe you think I exaggerate (there are many lovely villages lost on the planet) … but the fact of being literally hanging on a cliff with a view surreal of the caldera and the most spectacular sunsets add many points. It radiates spirituality, calmness and contained energy.

The best thing of all is to book accommodation there (if you do not want to leave the wallet shaking, better in the port area and the Ammoudi bay, down a stairway, where there is a small little hotel with no great luxuries but with incredible views of the neighboring island of Thirasia) and let yourself be at least a couple of days between its domes, churches, shops and restaurants, walking quietly along its central pedestrian street.

But that Oia is the tourist place par excellence of Santorini does not mean that there are no small secrets that are hidden before the great masses … like to sneak among the roofs and look for a unique and solitary place where to enjoy the dawn (yes, of the dawn If the sunset is nice, the departure is not less and above all: it is not overcrowded), relax with an afternoon cocktail in the Khataros Lounge Khataros beach lounge, or enjoy the small fishing village of Ammoudi, eating freshly caught fish in their taverns.

 

 

3. The beaches

There is one thing that I have not yet mentioned enough but that it is fundamental: Santorini is plagued by tourists, and this has made it inexorably recently added to the list of the 8 destinations «that hate Tourists the most» next to Amsterdam, Barcelona, ​​Cinque Terre or Buthan, among others. This is especially noticeable when we visit its beaches, and so I would like to tell you about some lesser known ones where it will be easier for you to relax or at least be able to spread the towel.

Everyone talks about Red Beach. Ok, not bad, but it must be that I keep bad memories of it because that sand tinged with a red immobile towels, bathing suits and sandals leaving us a memory of the visit forever. What not everyone does so often is to catch the small boats that leave every half an hour from the Red Beach to the nearby White Beach – Aspri in Greek -, much more picturesque and spectacular, and to which only one can access by boat. Also the lava is protagonist, since it forms great white and gray mounds on the sea. It is wilder and also less accessible, but also more hidden and less crowded.

Another virgin beach almost unknown is the beach of Koulumbus or Cape Kolumbo, about 6 kms. Of Oia, and to which it is acceded from a path of lava. It is a beach of pumice and pebbles – it is essential to wear scarves or some suitable footwear – exotic, quiet, and in which you will hardly find any nudist or solitary bather.

And to end with the list of secluded and secluded beaches, the aforementioned Khataros Beach which can be reached on foot from Oia or Ammoudi.

 

4. Magic Villages

Oia doesn’t live in Santorini alone. Tthere are other examples of villages no less charming, like Pyrgos or Imerovigli.

Pyrgos is a small stepped town, the ancient capital of the island, built on top of a hill, and ascending until reaching a Venetian castle in a labyrinthine streets where the easiest thing is to end up getting lost. The town retains the air more typical of the Cyclades and has kept intact its essence passing for many years unnoticed to the tourists, although it returns to emerge from its ashes thanks to the work of its lieutenant mayor in the diffusion of his showy Easter.

Imerovigli is actually the continuation of Fira, just two kilometers away, and, unlike this one, is much quieter and more welcoming. Besides its beautiful cliff, it opens inwards where it has the most authentic taverns and restaurants. It is an ideal choice to stay near the center and has one of the most chic and glamorous hotels on the island, the impressive Hotel Grace. If you like to walk and want to take an unforgettable experience, from Imerovigli departs one of the most incredible paths of about 2 hours towards Oia bordering the cliff.

 

 

5. The archaeological site of Akrotiri

We are in Greece … it is time to visit some site like the one of Akrotiri, which shows a civilization with more than 3,000 years of antiquity full of legends like the one that says that in fact it is the remains of Atlantis. The city is preserved in perfect conditions thanks to the tons of ashes that buried it and shows up to its houses of two and three floors, an advanced concept for the time. The visit only costs € 6 (reduced pass), and  when we leave we are next to the red beach to be able to take a dip.

 

6. Nea Kameni and Hot Springs

Santorini also has its adventurous side, and one of the experiences that best reflects it would be the ascent to the volcano Nea Kameni to finish bathing in hot springs of Hot Springs. They organize excursions of about 3 hours with a price around € 20 from the old port of Thira at 11am in a boat that docks in the bay of the volcano (Erinia) to climb a path to the top to see The active craters and then reach the island of Palea Kameni with natural muds called «hot springs» and take a thermal bath in the bay of Agios Nikolaos, where water temperature varies between 30 and 35 degrees.

 

7. Taverns, canteens and restaurants

One of the great attractions to visit the Cyclades, or any corner of Greece in general, is its gastronomy. In Santorini you will find from exclusive restaurants with privileged views to the Aegean to modest taverns very economical passing through small businesses of the typical Gyros. Here my Top 5 on the island:

 

To repeat and repeat, Metaxy Mas Tavern, Pyrgos

This tavern in the small village of Pyrgos is quite difficult to find but the expedition is well worth it. The place is very authentic, picturesque and unique, away from the tourist area and with an amazing terrace in the middle of the valley. But the truly spectacular is its food, of great quality and with a very adequate price, as well as its house wine. Finally, they serve you some very rich homemade grappa shots. What I liked the most was the feta cheese in bulk with honey … mmmm!!

 

To enjoy the traditional Greek homemade food in front of the sea, Taverna Vulcano, Perissa

A fairly inexpensive place to eat right by the sea and the best that exists on the promenade of Perissa. Again, an amazing feta cheese, and to highlight their mushrooms with cream or the salads. Despite being practically at sea, it is a place where you are more likely to meet local people than tourists, which always gives me lots of guarantee…

 

To taste the best gyros in the island, Pito Gyros, Oia

If you go walking and suddenly find a place crowded with people … stop investigating!! In this case, we discover Pito Gyros, the place where they make the best gyros of Santorini. A very lively, cheerful, picturesque … and even beautiful! To enjoy some very tasty gyros accompanied by a Greek beer on tap at great prices. More than recommended!!

 

To enjoy the famous sunset of Santorini,  The Wine Bar, Imerovigli

Hotel Heliotopos in Imerovigli has a restaurant located inside a cave with a very low light and quite romantic called The Wine Bar. The place has a good wine list and meals, and for me it has much more charm as a bar than as a restaurant, ideal to enjoy of a nice glass of wine during sunset. If you love to eat or dine, its food is quite good but perhaps it is more sparse compared to other restaurants on the island.

 

For special moments, Ambrosia Restaurant, Oia  

This restaurant has a spectacular location overlooking the caldera, is super romantic and its menu has a more elaborate cuisine, making it more exclusive and recommended to celebrate some special moment. The price per person is around 60-70€ and being a small place it is better to reserve a table because they are rife. The best of the menu are the squid with ouzo and you will find it easily on the main street of Oia, down some stairs before the church square.

 

8. And unforgettable hotels

One of the great hits of our trip to Santorini was our hotel … I still remember those breakfasts by the pool on a cliff to the Aegean Sea with a handmade Greek yogurt … I say this because it is true that accommodation in Santorini is not the cheapest, but it is worth looking for a place a little more special because you will remember it forever. I know that not everyone – me first – can afford to stay at the Grace, but if there are alternatives that can make our stay on the island an unforgettable moment … I tell you some that I like very much to see if you are convinced…

 

 

Rena’s Suites, Fira

It was our hotel in Santorini, in Fira, and as I said we loved it. For a price of € 80 a double room, good facilities and very close to the center, what we liked most was his huge pool overlooking the Aegean and the incredible breakfast.

They are very cute apartments dug in the stone and charming terraces, some of them with small swimming pools or jacuzzis. All apartments have a kitchen which encourages you to prepare meals with newly purchased Greek products and enjoy them surrounded by the incredible views from the balcony, from € 97 the apartment for 2 people.
