El primer post no podía ser otro que Holbox, una maravilla escondida en el Golfo de México que nos ha robado el corazón este verano 🫶
Antes de empezar os presento una novedad en el blog: a partir de ahora en todos los posts de viajes tendréis una ficha con los principales datos de interés que espero que os resulte útil, a mí me hubiese encantado tenerla a mano mientras preparaba esta aventura! 🙂

¿Por qué Holbox?
Era una de las preguntas que más nos hicieron cuando llegamos, y es que esta islita pretende mantenerse en un discreto segundo plano dejando todo el protagonismo turístico a zonas híper conocidas -y también híper masificadas- de Quintana Roo como Cancún, Playa del Carmen o Tulum. Los locales nos confesaron que apenas se promueve o publicita con el objetivo de evitar que se corrompa este paraíso y OMG 🙏🏻 espero que se mantenga lo máximo posible así, con ese encanto añadido de no estar asfaltada, la ausencia de coches, la posibilidad de quedarte a ratitos sin electricidad en la isla o su inestable conexión a Internet.
Elegimos Holbox por todos estos motivos, para vivir una experiencia lo más auténtica posible y sobre todo para desconectar. Y puedo dar fe de ello totalmente, a las cuatro horas de pisarla ya lo habíamos conseguido! 😉 Aunque tampoco sería justo no admitir que también nos atraían sus playas, algunas zonas que queríamos conocer de la isla y su gastronomía… ¿lo podía tener todo? Habría que probar…
Llegar a Holbox, la primera aventura
Una de las cosas que hace que este destino sea más alternativo es que no es de los mas cómodos de llegar. Tras aterrizar en Cancún, el trayecto hasta Chiquilá (el puerto desde el que parten los ferries a Holbox) es de unas 2h en coche. Hay diferentes maneras de hacer este trayecto, e incluso buses ADO económicos, pero que pueden dilatarse mucho más… nosotros contratamos un traslado privado con El Holboxeño, súper recomendable y de los más serios de la zona. Tardamos 1:45h en llegar (en su web podéis ver tarifas, comentarios y excursiones, charlamos desde España con ellos por whatssapp y eran encantadores. Importante! en el precio incluyen el peaje de la carretera).
El puerto de Chiquilá
Para llegar a Holbox tienes que pasar por aquí para coger el ferry, hay dos empresas que cubren el trayecto: Holbox Express (salen cada hora a y media) y 9 Hermanos (salen cada hora en punto). La duración del trayecto es de 30 mins. y los tickets de adulto cuestan 220 MXN ida o 400 MXN ida y vuelta. El primer ferry sale a las 6 a.m. y el último a las 21:30 p.m. Nosotros pasamos la primera noche en un hotel sencillo del puerto –Hotel Pelícano– para descansar del vuelo y nos pareció perfecto (45€/noche)
Pasando unas horas en Chiquilá
La piscina del hotel al amanecer, desayuno en un puestecito callejero donde nos prepararon la masa de la quesadilla al momento y tomamos nuestro primer licuado de melón, y el puerto del que salían los ferries.
Llegamos a Holbox!
Tras un trayecto de media hora en ferry que pasa volando, Holbox te recibe con su cartel de letras de colores y muchos carritos de golf. La isla no está asfaltada, no hay coches, las calles son de arena blanca casi siempre llenas de baches o charcos, y la manera de moverse es en bici o carrito de golf. Las tarifas de los carritos de golf están ya estipuladas en función de la zona (del puerto a nuestro hotel eran 100 MXN y no tardamos ni 10 minutos en llegar). Podéis ir perfectamente andando (son 600 metros/ 7 mins. al centro y 900 metros/ 10 mins. a la playa), pero si vais con maleta es más rollo porque las calles no están asfaltadas.
Datos sobre Holbox
Holbox en maya yucateco significa “Hoyo negro“ pero en realidad es un paraíso colorido y alegre. Desde el puerto hasta la playa hay 2km. y de punta a punta 40 km. de los cuales 34 km. son de playa. Tiene unos 1200 habitantes y está bañada por el Golfo de México. El pueblito tiene mucha vida, bares, restaurantes, puestos callejeros, mercadillos… y la playa está llena de beach clubs y columpios. Para moveros podéis ir andando o alquilar una bici (200-300 MXN/día) o carrito de golf (300MX/hora, unos 2000MXN/día). Importante! coged un carrito 4×4, os facilitará conducir por los baches y atravesar los charcos de agua.
Alojamiento en Holbox
Holbox tiene mil opciones para alojarse: hostales muy económicos, hoteles boutique, resorts, apartamentos, campings… desde nuestra experiencia os desaconsejaríamos alojaros en todo el meollo por el ruido (ej. cerca de The Hot Corner). Podéis preguntarnos en comentarios por cualquier alojamiento que os interese porque hicimos una buena investigación por la zona! Tras haber visto in situ todo no cambiaríamos por nada del mundo el hotel que elegimos, pero si no os encaja una opción asequible sería la Posada Yalekin, y más tranquilas el Hotelito Crismi o Villas Caracol.
Nuestro hotel
Nos alojamos en el Dream Beachfront Hotel y no podemos estar más contentos con la elección. Está muy bien situado a dos calles de la avenida principal y en primera línea de una de las playas más impresionantes que hayamos visto nunca. Tenía dos piscinas (una frente al mar) y unos desayunos deliciosos tipo buffet cada mañana. Todos los días nos levantábamos a bañarnos en aguas cristalinas antes de desayunar y estábamos solos en un auténtico paraíso nadando junto a rayas, peces de colores, garzas… era junto con la puesta de sol el momento más especial del día. Pasamos allí 12 noches y nos sentíamos en familia, sin duda si volvemos repetiremos!

Qué hacer en Holbox
Holbox se puede ver en uno o dos días… pero estar casi dos semanas hizo que pudiésemos vivir su verdadera esencia e integrarnos totalmente en la vida de la isla… hasta nos saludaban por la calle!

El muelle y las letras
La postal más conocida de Holbox y el punto de partida para empezar a moverse por la isla. Es casi “obligatorio“ no irse de Holbox sin hacerse la típica foto en sus letras, en las que falta la “L“ para que cada uno la rellene a su manera 😅 (si queréis pasar un rato divertido podéis quedaros un momento a ver a la gente posando) El muelle Tiburón Ballena es muy pintoresco y está especialmente concurrido al atardecer, ya que desde ahí puede fotografiarse la puesta de sol sin nada que la obstaculice.
Punta Mosquito
Conocida como “Las Maldivas de México“ por sus aguas transparentes color turquesa y las lenguas de arena sobre las que se puede caminar en mitad del mar, es una reserva natural protegida donde residen flamencos rosas, garzas, iguanas, cocodrilos y todo tipo de fauna marina: caminaréis junto a rayas y peces de colores! Está a unos 2,5km del centro y se puede ir andando, en bici o carrito de golf (100-150 MXN según desde donde lo cojáis). Todos los vehículos se aparcan en el Hotel Las Nubes y desde ahí hay que caminar. Recomendamos llevar una mochila estanca para atravesar el mar hasta los bancos de arena y si queréis tomar algo llevar vuestras propias provisiones o entrar en el hotel Las Nubes (no hay aseos, puestos ni restaurantes)
Punta Cocos
Para nosotros imprescindible! 🤩 Es un lugar que te deja sin palabras, bañado por aguas de mar que parecen una piscina y en el que se respira una calma especial. Si buscáis desconectar, es vuestro lugar! Está a 2kms. del centro y nosotros fuimos dando un paso desde el hotel (unos 100MXN en carrito de golf). En esta zona pueden verse estrellas de mar, flamencos, nidos de tortugas, se puede caminar por los manglares, hacer kayak o snorkel o simplemente observar y disfrutar desde una de las hamacas en la orilla del mar. Hay columpios y tres chiringuitos, uno de ellos el Beach Bar Holbox Mágico que os super recomendamos: con camastros por 100MXN/hora o 250MXN/día, una decoración preciosa y buena comida.
Parque Central
Es el sitio “donde todo se cuece“ y con una vida especial a partir de la tarde. Se llega a él atravesando la arteria central (calle Tiburón Ballena»), tiene un escenario donde siempre había performances o bailes regionales y una zona de recreativos. Alrededor del parque por la tarde noche ponían los puestos de comida con tacos deliciosos, crepes y marquesitas (luego os contamos, espectaculares!!)
Las puestas de sol
En este viaje hemos coleccionado las 12 puestas de sol más espectaculares. Puedes disfrutarlas desde cualquier punto, siendo el muelle el más famoso y concurrido. Si os apetece ver la puesta de sol mientras os tomáis algo, recomendamos hacerlo desde el Beach Club Escape Holbox o desde Capitán Capitán (nuestra segunda casa 😂)
El Tour de las 3 islas
Aunque esta excursion era la más ofertada, no la hicimos por varios motivos: estaba muy masificada, era la típica excursión para turistas y además ibas corriendo de un lugar a otro sin apenas poder disfrutarlo. La excursión tiene tres paradas: Isla Pájaros, Isla Pasión y el Cenote Yalahau. Dura unas 3,5-4h y su precio ronda los 500-600MXN/ persona.
Art mural tour
Una de las cosas que más nos gustaron fueron los grafittis que estaban desperdigados por todo Holbox, hasta en la playa! Creo que le aportan una personalidad única a la isla. Hay un “recorrido oficial“ para poder verlos aunque nosotros los íbamos descubriendo callejeando y era todo un pasatiempo, los que más nos gustaron: Colibrí, Frida Kahlo, jungla (al lado del restaurante Roots Pizza), la chica con el reloj de arena y las alas rosas frente al restaurante El Cocal.
Tiburón Ballena
En Holbox puede avistarse el tiburón ballena desde finales de mayo hasta septiembre, y se organizan tours en los que además pueden verse tortugas o mantarrayas gigantes. Estas excursions permiten nadar con los tiburones y hacer snorkel en el Cabo Catoche, e incluyen comida (ceviche). El coste es elevado (no bajan de los 200€/ unos 3.400MXN en tour compartido y d los 1.500€/28.500MXN en tour privado).
Bioluminiscencia
De abril a noviembre se da en su máxima intensidad el fenómeno de la bioluminiscencia en Holbox, y las mejores zonas para verlo son Punta Cocos y los alrededores del hotel Villas Caracol. El mejor momento es la caída del sol, evitando noches de luna llena. Este fenómeno se produce gracias a la molécula luciferina de algunos organismos acuáticos que, al reaccionar con el oxígeno, libera energía en forma de luz. También lo vimos en Camboya y es impresionante. Hay tours organizados para verlo y rutas en kayak, pero como siempre poder verlo por tu cuenta nos parece mucho más recomendable 😉
Mercado Municipal
Un lugar que nos fascinó y que no era nada turístico (debe ser por eso! jejeje) fue este pintoresco y colorido mercadito algo escondido frecuentado por los locales. En él había puestos de fruta, zumos y comida o “abarrotes“ que también preparaban para llevar a casa y pueden comer por 300MXN dos personas. Probad los panuchos de cochinita pibil y aprovechad para comprar alguna fruta de temporada! Abre de Lunes a Sábado hasta las 14:30h y está en la esquina de la calle Damero con la calle Tintorera.
Columpios en la playa
Finalmente, otra de las cosas que hacer en Holbox si tenéis tiempo es subir a alguno de los muchos columpios que se distribuyen a lo largo de la isla o haceros una foto. en ellos al atardecer. Elegid el que más os guste, hay muchos! (Punta Cocos, Beach Club Capitan Capitan, Carolinda, Bar Barossa…). En el Hotel Zomay encontramos columpios, pero en lugar de estar en la playa estaban alrededor de la barra del chiringuito y nos pareció guay para usarlos mientras nos tomábamos algo.
Comer en Holbox
La especialidad de Holbox es la pizza de langosta y aunque en un principio suena raro, cuando la pruebas está deliciosa! Es algo cara (unos 500-700 MXN) y la ofrecen en casi todos los restaurantes de la isla, os recomendamos especialmente la de Edelyn (más tradicional/ local y modesto) y la de Roots Pizzas a la Leña (más moderno y sofisticado). Pero además de la pizza, hemos comido de maravilla!
Nuestros sitios favoritos para comer en Holbox:
Los mejores tacos arrachera marinados que hemos probado! Mención especial al guacamole con chipotle de mango del Chef Omar, espectacular. Precio medio (tacos 240MXN, guacamole 195MXN), raciones grandes, sitio muy chulo y atención tanto por parte de Luis como del chef Omar excepcional.
📍Gerónimo de Aguilar
Un asador humilde y super auténtico donde solo sirven pollo asado o rostizado aderezado con salsas, patatas asadas, frijoles, arroz y tortillas, simplemente delicioso!! No venden alcohol o cerveza. No os lo perdáis!
📍Paseo Kuka con Palomino
En la playa probamos el mango espolvoreado con chile y nos encantó la combinación! Iban vendiéndolos en puestos ambulantes. Probadlos, os sorprenderá el contraste de sabor!
Las Panchas es un restaurante tradicional regentado por una familia encantadora en el que sirven comida casera deliciosa a buen precio. Tacos, pescado, camarones, ceviche, aguachile, parrillada… cualquier cosa que pidáis os encantará. Nosotros repetimos varias veces para probar más cosas!
📍 Morelos con Pedro Joaquin Coldwell
Nos encanta la comida callejera y en Holbox nos dimos un homenaje! Probamos los tacos de los food trucks del parque central y platillos de los puestos del Mercado Municipal (en especial los de Antojos La Sirenita y Don Julio)
Pero SOBRE TODO es IMPRESCINDIBLE probar las marquesitas! Son crepes tostados (tipo barquillo) rellenos tanto de ingredientes dulces como salados. Mi preferido: el de queso philadelphia + queso de bola, mmmmm! y por solo 50MXN. Las mejores: las del parque central y las de la esquina de The Hot Corner con el hotel Mittoz.
También tenéis el Mercadito Food Park, una placita con food trucks donde pedir comida y tomarla en sus mesas: carne a la parrilla, tacos, burritos hot dogs… está algo escondido, justo al lado de Mariscos la Viril en la C/ Tiburón Ballena
Un restaurante colorido en el que se come bastante bien a pesar de estar en plena calle central. Los nachos nos encantaron y nos sirvieron un burrito enorme, todo acompañado de unas de las mejores margaritas de la isla.
📍 Tiburón Ballena
Es el restaurante del hotel Villas Caracol y nos lo recomendó un amigo mexicano. Su especialidad son los pescados, productos del mar y parrillas y comes o cenas frente a la playa. Está algo alejado del centro a un paseo de unos 15 minutos.
📍 Damero Manzana 49
Un sitio instagrameable ideal para tomar cafe o un brunch. La entrada está escondida entre The Hot Corner y La Pinsa, entras por un pasillo estrecho y llegas a una especie de oasis en medio del ajetreo exterior. Hay brunch, postres, tartas, chilaquiles, smoothies…
📍 Pedro Joaquin Coldwell. Abrierto de 8:30 a 14:30h.
Tip random
Cada vez que íbamos a comer a Las Panchas nos volvíamos más y más adictos a la salsa picante Valentina, acabábamos echándosela a todo!. No somos muy de souvenirs, pero terminamos trayéndonos un bote como recuerdo del viaje y la usamos no solo con comida mexicana, también con pasta, como aderezo de ensaladas, con gambas, patatas fritas… sabe a México! La podréis encontrar en las tiendas del pueblo, en el aeropuerto de Cancun, en Carrefour , El Corte Inglés y hasta en Amazon. Hay variedad picante (etiqueta amarilla) y extra picante (etiqueta negra), nosotros cogimos la picante y es muy soportable 🌶🌶🌶 😅
Salir y ocio en Holbox
Para terminar, no podían faltar sitios para salir en Holbox! La isla tiene varios beach clubs, un par de conocidas discotecas y algunos restaurantes con una zona de barra para tomar algo bastante animados.
Si queréis divertiros en Holbox, no os perdáis estos sitios:
Lo llamábamos “nuestra segunda casa“ porque no hubo un solo día que no fuésemos a tomar algo durante o después de la puesta de sol, con esto os lo digo todo… buena música, a veces en directo, vistas espectaculares al muelle y a la puesta de sol, cerveza muy fresquita y camareros super simpáticos. Había comida, cocktails, mesa de ping pong y hasta su característico barco con un esqueleto, “El capitán“ 😆. Aunque se llame Beach Club no esperéis el típico lugar pijo o de postureo, era mucho más hippie y laid back: un lugar donde ir descalzo y simplemente disfrutar del vibe!
📍Carito. Abre de Lunes a Sábado hasta las 23h y el Domingo hasta las 21h.
Uno de los lugares de marcha más famosos de la isla. A partir de las 12 p.m. es pub/discoteca con música (muy alta!) de estilo caribeño y latino lleno de gente alternando y bailando. Suele tener música en directo y DJs y se distribuye en dos plantas, desde la de arriba tenéis vistas al pueblo y parte de la zona de la playa.
📍Pedro Joaquín Coldwell con Tiburon Ballena. Abre todos los días hasta la 1 a.m. y cierra los Martes.
Nuestro must para el aperitivo! En realidad es un alojamiento regentado por Edwing y su mujer y los camareros eran super amables, ya nos conocían de ir todos los días y nada más vernos nos sacaban nuestro cubo de mini Coronas heladas con lima que nos tomábamos con los pies descalzos mojándose en la misma orilla del mar escuchando buena musiquita que pinchaba el propio Edwin desde su tablet. También servían desayunos, comidas y cenas y era uno de los puntos más solicitados para ver la puesta de sol.
📍 Primera línea de playa, al lado del Dream Beachfront hotel
Para la “night party“, abierto hasta el amanecer y hasta con piscina. Es el sitio para terminar la fiesta, aunque mejor no llegar hasta la última hora cuando todo el mundo está ya demasiado perjudicado!😆
📍 Paseo Carey
Menudo lugar! Es un restaurante, pero solo fuimos a cenar una vez, el resto de noches íbamos a la barra con banquetas en la calle a tomar chupitos de tequila, cocktails o cervezas y tenía siempre ambientazo, tanto que todo el mundo se paraba en la calle a mirarlo atraído por su música y actuaciones en directo.
📍 Tiburón Ballena. De Lunes a Sábado hasta la 1 a.m. y Domingos hasta las 23:30h
Aunque no es un sitio de marcha o fiesta como tal, es ideal para tomar algo en Punta Cocos a la hora del aperitivo o al atardecer. Tiene diferentes ambientes muy bien decorados y si os apetece consumir en una hamaca tendréis que abonarla aparte (100 MXN/hora o 250MXN/día)

Reflexiones del viaje
En esta nueva sección me gustaría hacer una balance final de cada viaje. Tan solo es un punto de vista personal y puede coincidir o no con el de otros viajeros, por lo que me encantaría saber si compartís o no las mismas sensaciones. Creo que pude ser una manera preciosa de hacer más útiles y completos los posts para otras personas que estén pensando visitar este destino o preparando su viaje. ¿Os animáis?🤩 Estoy deseando leeros, escuchar vuestras experiencias y abrir debate con vosotros en comentarios!💜
Lo mejor: encontrar todavía lugares que mantienen su esencia y consiguen que desconectes de verdad. En este viaje hemos descubierto gente maravillosa, playas paradisiacas prácticamente vacías, lugares d ensueño y una autenticidad que no encontramos en otras zonas cercanas de Quintana Roo.
Lo peor: empiezan a verse atisbos de resorts y oferta de restauración que ojalá no vayan a más o cambien en poco tiempo los vibes de la isla. Recuerdo Tulum hace más de 10 años y tenía un mood muy similar al que hemos encontrado en Holbox, me da miedo que en 10 años se transforme en “el nuevo Tulum“ (espero que no🤞)
Chicos, qué sensación más maravillosa estar de vuelta!

Why Holbox?
It was one of the questions we were frequently asked when we arrived, and that’s because this little island intends to stay in a discreet second plane, letting all the tourist spotlight shine on hyper-known -and hyper-crowded- areas of Quintana Roo like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Tulum. The locals confessed to us that it is barely promoted or advertised in order to preserve this paradise from corruption, and OMG 🙏🏻 I hope it remains like this as much as possible, with that added charm of being unpaved, the absence of cars, the possibility of experiencing moments without electricity on the island, or its unstable internet connection.
We chose Holbox for all these reasons, to live the most authentic experience possible and above all to disconnect. And I can testify to that completely, within four hours of stepping on the island we had already achieved it! 😉 Although it wouldn’t be fair not to admit that we were also attracted by its beaches, some areas we wanted to explore on the island, and its cuisine… Could it have it all? We had to find out…
Arriving in Holbox, the first adventure
One of the things that makes this destination more alternative is that it is not the most convenient to reach. After landing in Cancun, the journey to Chiquila (the port from which ferries depart to Holbox) takes about 2 hours by car. There are different ways to make this journey, including economical ADO buses, but they can take much longer… we hired a private transfer with El Holboxeño, highly recommended and one of the most reliable in the area. It took us 1 hour and 45 minutes to arrive (you can check their website for rates, reviews, and excursions, we communicated with them via WhatsApp from Spain and they were lovely. Important! the toll on the highway is included in the price).
The port of Chiquilá
To get to Holbox, you have to pass through here to take the ferry. There are two companies that cover the route: Holbox Express (they depart every hour and a half) and 9 Hermanos (they depart every hour on the dot). The duration of the journey is 30 mins. and adult tickets cost 220 MXN one way or 400 MXN round trip. The first ferry departs at 6 a.m. and the last one at 9:30 p.m. We spent the first night in a basic hotel at the port – Hotel Pelícano – to rest from the flight and we found it perfect (45€ per night).
Spending a few hours in Chiquilá
The hotel pool at dawn, breakfast at a street stall where they made the quesadilla dough from scratch and we had our first cantaloupe smoothie, and the port from where the ferries departed.
We arrived in Holbox!
After a half-hour ferry ride, Holbox welcomes you with its colorful lettered sign and many golf carts. The island is not paved, there are no cars, the streets are mostly filled with sandy bumps or puddles, and the way to get around is by bike or golf cart. The rates for golf carts are already established based on the area (from the port to our hotel it was 100 MXN and it took us less than 10 minutes to get there). You can easily walk (it’s 600 meters / 7 mins. to the center and 900 meters / 10 mins. to the beach), but if you’re carrying luggage it can be a hassle because the streets are not paved.
Facts about Holbox
Holbox in Yucatec Mayan means «Black Hole» but in reality it is a colourful and lively paradise. From the harbour to the beach it is 2 km. and from end to end 40 km. of which 34 km. are beach. It has about 1200 inhabitants and is bathed by the Gulf of Mexico. The town has a lot of life, bars, restaurants, street stalls, street markets… and the beach is full of beach clubs and swings. To get around you can walk or rent a bike (200-300 MXN/day) or a golf cart (300MXX/hour, about 2000MXN/day). It’s important to take a 4×4 cart, it will make it easier to drive over the potholes and through the puddles of water.
Alojamiento en Holbox
Holbox has a thousand options for accommodation: budget hostels, boutique hotels, resorts, flats, campsites… we would advise against staying in the centre of Holbox because of the noise (e.g. near The Hot Corner). You can ask us in the comments for any accommodation you are interested in because we did a good research in the area! Having seen everything in situ, we wouldn’t change the hotel we chose for the world, but if it doesn’t suit you, an affordable option would be the Posada Yalekin, and the quieter Hotelito Crismi or Villas Caracol.
Our hotel
We stayed at Dream Beachfront Hotel and we couldn’t be happier with our choice. It is very well located two blocks away from the main avenue and on the front line of one of the most stunning beaches we have ever seen. It had two swimming pools (one facing the sea) and delicious buffet breakfasts every morning. Every day we got up to swim in crystal clear water before breakfast and were alone in a real paradise swimming with rays, colourful fish, herons… it was together with the sunset the most special moment of the day. We spent 12 nights there and we felt like family, no doubt if we come back we will repeat!

What to do in Holbox
Holbox can be seen in one or two days… but being there for almost two weeks meant that we were able to experience its true essence and fully integrate into island life… they even greeted us in the street!

The dock and the letters
The best known postcard of Holbox and the starting point to start moving around the island. It is almost «obligatory» not to leave Holbox without taking the typical photo at its letters, where the «L» is missing so that everyone can fill it in in their own way 😅 (if you want to have some fun you can stay for a while and watch the people posing). The Tiburon Ballena pier is very picturesque and is especially busy at sunset, as from there you can photograph the sunset without anything to obstruct it.
Punta Mosquito
Known as the «Maldives of Mexico» for its clear turquoise waters and the tongues of sand you can walk on in the middle of the sea, it’s a protected nature reserve home to pink flamingos, pelicans, iguanas, crocodiles and all kinds of marine life: you’ll be walking alongside rays and colourful fish! It’s about 2.5km from the centre and can be reached on foot, by bike or golf cart (100-150 MXN depending on where you take it from). All vehicles park at Hotel Las Nubes and from there you have to walk. We recommend bringing a waterproof backpack to cross the sea to the sandbanks and if you want to have a drink, bring your own supplies or go into the Las Nubes hotel (there are no toilets, stalls or restaurants).
Punta Cocos
For us it is a must! It is a place that leaves you speechless, bathed by sea waters that look like a swimming pool and where you can breathe a special calm. If you are looking to disconnect, this is THE place! It’s 2kms. from the centre and we went by foot from the hotel (about 100MXN in a golf cart). In this area you can see starfish, flamingos, turtle nests, you can walk through the mangroves, kayak or snorkel or just watch and enjoy from one of the hammocks on the seashore. There are swings and three beach bars, one of them the Beach Bar Holbox Mágico which we highly recommend: with lounge chairs for 100MXN/hour or 250MXN/day, beautiful decoration and good food.
Central Park
This is the place «where everything happens» and with a special life from the afternoon onwards. You get there by crossing the central artery (Tiburon Ballena street), it has a stage where there were always performances or regional dances and a recreational area. Around the park in the evening there were food stalls with delicious tacos, crepes and marquesitas (we’ll tell you later, they were spectacular!!).
Sunset
On this trip we have collected the 12 most spectacular sunsets. You can enjoy them from any point, with the pier being the most famous and crowded. If you feel like watching the sunset while having a drink, we recommend doing it from the Beach Club Escape Holbox or from Capitán Capitán (our second home 😂).
3 islands tour
Although this excursion was the most offered, we didn’t do it for several reasons: it was very crowded, it was the typical excursion for tourists and you were running from one place to another without being able to enjoy it. The excursion has three stops: Isla Pájaros, Isla Pasión and Cenote Yalahau. It takes about 3.5-4 hours and costs around 500-600MXN/person.
Art mural tour
One of the things we liked the most was the graffiti that was scattered all over Holbox, even on the beach! I think they add a unique personality to the island. There is an «official tour» to see them although we were discovering them on the street and it was a great pastime. The ones we liked the most were: Colibrí, Frida Kahlo, jungle (next to the Roots Pizza restaurant), the girl with the hourglass and the pink wings in front of the El Cocal restaurant.
Whale Shark
Whale sharks can be spotted in Holbox from the end of May until September, and tours are organised where you can also see turtles or giant manta rays. These excursions allow you to swim with the sharks and snorkel at Cabo Catoche, and include lunch (ceviche). The cost is high (they don’t go below 200€/about 3,400MXN on a shared tour and 1,500€/28,500MXN on a private tour).
Bioluminiscence
From April to November the phenomenon of bioluminescence is at its most intense in Holbox, and the best areas to see it are Punta Cocos and around the Villas Caracol hotel. The best time is at sunset, avoiding nights with a full moon. This phenomenon is produced by the luciferin molecule in some aquatic organisms which, when it reacts with oxygen, releases energy in the form of light. We also saw it in Cambodia and it is impressive. There are organised tours to see it and kayaking routes, but as always, we think it’s much more recommendable to see it on your own 😉.
Municipal Market
One place that fascinated us and was not at all touristy (that must be why! hehehe) was this quaint and colourful little market, somewhat hidden, frequented by locals. There were stalls selling fruit, juices and food or «abarrotes» which they also prepared to take home and you can eat for 300MXN for two people. Try the panuchos de cochinita pibil and take the opportunity to buy some seasonal fruit! It is open Monday to Saturday until 14:30h and is located on the corner of Damero and Tintorera streets.
Beach swings
Finally, another thing to do in Holbox if you have time is to go on one of the many swings that are distributed throughout the island or take a photo on them at sunset. Choose the one you like best, there are many! (Punta Cocos, Beach Club Capitan Capitan, Carolinda, Bar Barossa…). At Hotel Zomay we found swings, but instead of being on the beach they were around the beach bar and we thought it was cool to use them while we had a drink.
Eating in Holbox
Holbox’s speciality is lobster pizza and although it sounds strange at first, when you try it it’s delicious! It’s a bit expensive (around 500-700 MXN) and they offer it in almost every restaurant on the island, we especially recommend Edelyn’s (more traditional/local and modest) and Roots Pizzas a la Leña (more modern and sophisticated). But apart from the pizza, we tried more wonderful meal!
Our favorite places to eat in Holbox:
The best marinated arrachera tacos we’ve ever tasted! Special mention to the Chef Omar’s guacamole with mango chipotle, spectacular. Average price (tacos 240MXN, guacamole 195MXN), large portions, very cool place and exceptional service from both Luis and chef Omar.
📍Gerónimo de Aguilar
A humble and super authentic steakhouse where they only serve rotisserie chicken with sauces, roasted potatoes, beans, rice and tortillas, simply delicious! They don’t sell alcohol or beer. Don’t miss it!
📍Paseo Kuka/ Palomino
En la playa probamos el mango espolvoreado con chile y nos encantó la combinación! Iban vendiéndolos en puestos ambulantes. Probadlos, os sorprenderá el contraste de sabor!
Las Panchas is a traditional restaurant run by a charming family that serves delicious homemade food at a good price. Tacos, fish, shrimp, ceviche, aguachile, grilled meat… whatever you order, you’ll love it. We went back several times to try more things!
📍 Morelos/ Pedro Joaquin Coldwell
We love the street food and in Holbox we tried tacos from the food trucks in the Central Park and platillos from the stalls in the Municipal Market (we especially recommend Antojos La Sirenita and Don Julio).
But above all, it is ESSENTIAL to try the marquesitas! They are toasted crepes filled with both sweet and savory ingredients. My favorite: the one with Philadelphia cheese + cheese ball, mmmmm! and for only 50MXN. The best ones: the ones in the central park and the ones at the corner of The Hot Corner and Hotel Mittoz.
You also have the Mercadito Food Park, a small square with food trucks to order food and enjoy it at their tables: grilled meat, tacos, hot dog burritos… it is somewhat hidden, right next to Mariscos la Viril on Tiburón Ballena street.
A colourful restaurant where the food is quite good despite being in the middle of the central street. We loved the nachos and they served us a huge burrito, all accompanied by some of the best margaritas on the island.
📍 Tiburón Ballena
It is the restaurant at the Villas Caracol hotel and a Mexican friend recommended it to us. Its specialty is fish, seafood and grills and you eat or dine in front of the beach. It is somewhat far from the center, a walk of about 15 minutes.
📍 Damero Block 49
An instagrammable place ideal for coffee or brunch. The entrance is hidden between The Hot Corner and La Pinsa, you enter through a narrow corridor and arrive at a sort of oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle outside. There’s brunch, desserts, cakes, chilaquiles, smoothies…

random Tip
Every time we went to eat at Las Panchas we got more and more addicted to Valentina hot sauce, we ended up pouring it on everything! We’re not really souvenir people, but we ended up bringing back a jar as a souvenir of the trip and we used it not only with Mexican food, but also with pasta, as a salad dressing, with prawns, chips… it tastes like Mexico! You can find it in the shops in town, at Cancun airport, in Carrefour, El Corte Ingles and even on Amazon. There is a spicy variety (yellow label) and extra spicy (black label), we took the spicy one and it is very bearable 🌶🌶🌶 😅
Going out in Holbox
Last but not least, there are plenty of places to go out in Holbox! The island has several beach clubs, a couple of well-known discotheques and some lively restaurants with a bar area!
If you want to have fun in Holbox, don’t miss these places:
We called it «our second home» because there wasn’t a single day that we didn’t go for a drink during or after sunset, that’s all I can say…. good music, sometimes live, spectacular views of the pier and the sunset, very fresh beer and super friendly waiters. There was food, cocktails, ping pong table and even their characteristic boat with a skeleton, «The Captain» 😆. Although it’s called Beach Club, don’t expect the typical posh or posh place, it was much more hippie and laid back: a place to go barefoot and just enjoy the vibe!
📍 Carito. Monday to Saturday until 23h, Sundays until 21h.
One of the most famous night spots on the island. From 12 p.m. onwards it’s a pub/disco with (very loud!) Caribbean and Latin style music full of people alternating and dancing. It usually has live music and DJs and is spread over two floors, from the top floor you have views of the village and part of the beach area.
📍Pedro Joaquín Coldwell/ Tiburon Ballena. Opened until 1 a.m., closed on Tuesdays.
Our must for the aperitif! It is actually an accommodation run by Edwin and his wife and the waiters were super friendly, they already knew us from going there every day and as soon as they saw us they brought out our bucket of ice-cold mini Coronas with lime that we drank with our bare feet getting wet on the seashore listening to good music that Edwin himself played on his tablet. They also served breakfast, lunch and dinner and it was one of the most popular spots to watch the sunset.
📍 First line of the beach, besides Dream Beachfront hotel
For the «night party», open until dawn and even with a swimming pool. It’s the place to end the party, although it’s best not to arrive until the last minute when everyone is already too damaged!😅
📍 Paseo Carey
What a place! It’s a restaurant, but we only went for dinner once, the rest of the evenings we went directly to the bar with benches in the street to have shots of tequila, cocktails or beers and it always had a great atmosphere, so much so that everyone stopped in the street to look at it, attracted by the music and live performances.
📍 Tiburón Ballena. Monday to Saturday until 1 a.m., Sundays until 23:30h
Although it is not a party place as such, it is ideal to have a drink in Punta Cocos at aperitif time or at sunset. It has different atmospheres very well decorated and if you feel like having a drink in a hammock you will have to pay for it separately (100 MXN/hour or 250MXN/day).

Thoughts after the trip
In this new section I would like to make a final assessment of each trip. It’s just a personal point of view and it may or may not coincide with other travellers’, so I would love to know if you share the same feelings or not. I think it could be a great way to make the posts more useful and complete for other people who are thinking about visiting this destination or preparing their trip. The best thing: to still find places that keep their essence and make you really disconnect. On this trip we have discovered wonderful people, paradisiacal beaches that are practically empty, dreamlike places and an authenticity that we did not find in other nearby areas of Quintana Ro
The worst thing: you start to see glimpses of resorts and restaurants that hopefully will not go further or change the vibes of the island in a short time. I remember Tulum more than 10 years ago and it had a very similar mood to what we have found in Holbox, I’m afraid that in 10 years it will become «the new Tulum» (I hope not🤞).
