Rio de Janeiro, «Cidade Maravilhosa»... una ciudad contrastes, de vivencias, y de enclaves que te dejan sin respiración

La que en su día fue capital del Imperio hoy alberga a más de 8 millones de habitantes, aunque es difícil contabilizar la cantidad exacta debido a la enorme concentración de población en favelas. La imagen de la ciudad desde el aire antes de aterrizar por primera vez te impresiona:

Cuando piensas en Río como posible destino, te sobrevienen sensaciones contradictorias… Hay mil foros en Internet en los que la principales temáticas son la inseguridad y los elevados precios de la ciudad. Pero tiene tantas cosas que descubrir, tanta riqueza cultural, tanta alegría y amabilidad en sus habitantes, que es difícil resistirse y no intentarlo. La proximidad de las Olimpiadas del 2016 finalmente decantó la elección a visitarlo este año, así que… vámonos a Río!!

Los primeros instantes allí, tras un vuelo de 10h, son estresantes! Llegamos por la tarde pero el sol se pone pronto en Rio, especialmente en la época en la que lo visitamos: en Agosto allí es temporada invernal. En el aeropuerto te abordarán mil personas ofreciéndote transporte y desplazamiento a la ciudad… Los taxis son baratos y seguros, podrás elegir entre aquéllos que te ofrecen un precio fijo y los que cobran por la carrera: puedes optar por éstos últimos sin problemas, por 60 reales y unos 30 minutos llegamos a la Zona Sul que es donde nos alojábamos (los de precio fijo realizan este mismo trayecto hasta Copacabana por 110 reales). También cuentas con un servicio de Autobús (llamado popularmente «Frescao», el 2018) que hace la misma ruta por una cantidad mucho menor, aunque eso sí, con unas cuantas paradas de por medio.

Seamos sinceros… ese itinerario te muestra las luces y las sombras de la ciudad. La pobreza y la belleza, la grandeza y la miseria de Rio de Janeiro y de sus habitantes.

El destino final: Arpoador, no puedo estar más satisfecha de la elección. Arpoador es el punto de conexión entre Ipanema y Copacabana, marcado por la Pedra do Arpoador, un icono para ver la puesta de sol más icónica: la de Ipanema con el morro dois Irmaos.

Arpoador es un barrio animado, bullicioso, ecléctico, en el que puedes encontrar surfistas, deportistas, vendedores ambulantes en la playa, turistas paseando en bicicleta, hasta personal trainers!

La estatua de Tom Jobim, el mítico músico que junto a Vinicius de Moraes de la canción La Garota de Ipanema, preside el malecón, cerca del parque del mismo nombre. En su placa, unos versos que, curiosamente, pertenecen a otra de sus grandes canciones: «Mi alma canta. Veo Rio de Janeiro».

¿Qué hacer en Río? hay muchas opciones según el plan que te apetezca….

EL CENTRO

Aunque solo sea un tour express, el centro de la ciudad merece la pena. La llaman el centro, aunque en realidad no es el centro de la ciudad… una mezcla de grandes edificios de oficina, monumentos, calles con edificios de fachadas decadentes y ventanas desvencijadas… No voy a detallar todos los puntos calientes de la ciudad ni recurriré a los tópicos turísticos del sambódromo o Marcaná, pero sí os comento curiosidades que me llamaron la atención:

• Una muestra de lo sorprendente que puede resultar la ciudad es su CATEDRAL: arquitectónicamente impactante por ser una construcción cónica y repleta de vidrieras en su interior. Si alzas la vista, podrás admirar la gran cruz que corona la construcción: de cada una de sus cuatro puntas parten las cuatro vidrieras verticales que forman efectos de luz natural cambiantes y espectaculares.

• Con un cariz más pintoresco, no os perdáis la ESCALERA DE SELARÓN. Me llamó mucho la atención el origen, y sobre todo, la esencia de una obra viva que va modificándose y variando a lo largo del tiempo. Dicen que el autor, Jorge Selarón, chileno y viajero empedernido, quiso recompensar al pueblo brasileño por lo bien que le acogieron, y revestir la escalera con los colores de la bandera brasileña. Pero cuando casi tenía terminada su obra, descubrió una tienda de azulejos y empezó a crear un mosaico colorido y complejo que se sigue completando con aportaciones de otros viajeros y particulares provenientes de todos los lugares del Mundo. Hoy en día, más de 2000 azulejos componen la obra, y si la visitas, te sentirás invadido por su gran colorido, alegría y vivacidad. Es casi imposible prestar atención a todos sus detalles, pero si os deteneis un ratito a curiosear os vais a encontrar muchas sorpresas!!

• Los ARCOS DE LAPA son también obligatorios en la visita. El famoso acueducto carioca que después fue utilizado como viaducto para el Bodinho, un tranvía que unía el centro de Río con el barrio de Santa Teresa, alberga en la actualidad infinidad de bares y terracitas que a partir de las 20h se abarrotan de gente y bullicio. Es cierto que es una zona en la que advierten estar pendientes por temas de seguridad, y es mejor que no se te ocurra salirte del recinto de la zona para evitar problemas, pero es un lugar muy vivo y animado en el que disfrutar de la musiquita y de la samba brasileña. • Parece que últimamente se ha puesto de moda visitar por parte de los turistas alguna de las favelas de Rio. Incluso ya las agencias ofrecen pasar un dia, desayunar, dormir… en ellas. Rio tiene miles de asentamientos irregulares que se han convertido en otra de las postales de la ciudad. Las más conocidas: Rocinha, Vidigal o Santa Marta. Una curiosidad, su nombre favela proviene de una planta que crecía en los morros: cuando los habitantes de la ciudad subían a ellos a por fruta o a por flores decían que venían de las favelas, y de ahí quedó el nombre.

PAN DE AZÚCAR Y CRISTO DEL CORCOVADO

Imprescindibles e imperdibles. No sé cual de los dos es más impresionante!!! Si tuviese que elegir, creo que me quedaría con la sensación de ver la ciudad por la noche del Pan de Azúcar…

• La Estatua del Cristo Redentor se encuentra coronando el morro del Corcovado, tiene 38 metros de altura, se encuentra a 710 metros sobre el nivel del mar y forma parte de las 7 nuevas Maravillas del Mundo. Las cifras en sí ya generan elevadas expectativas, tanto que miles y miles de visitantes forman largas colas cada día para subir y conseguir la mejor fotografía panorámica de la ciudad. Pero cuando por fin llegas allí, las increíbles vistas de Rio de Janeiro y de la Bahía de Guanabara hacen que merezca la pena. Mi meta era conseguir esta imagen, y finalmente lo logré!

• Llegué al Pao de Azucar a la puesta de sol. Y no puedo estar más contenta por haber estado allí cuando la ciudad empieza a mostrar todas sus luces y el cielo se oscurece. Si eliges subir en el Bondinho do Pao de Açucar, necesitarás completar sus dos tramos de funicular (Morro da Urca y Pao de Açucar) y te costará 62 reales, pero a cambio de ellos descubrirás una vista de 360 grados, a 396 metros sobre el nivel del mar, del lago, de las bahías, de las playas, iluminadas de noche… alucinante!. Si vas, planifícalo sin estrés: déjate un tiempo para sentarte en el bar panorámico Pao de Açucar Gourmet y disfrutar del enclave con un café, una caipirinha, o incluso un açai. Merece (y mucho) la pena.

ZONA SUL 

Fue el centro de operaciones: siempre tuve claro que quería disfrutar todo lo posible de unas de las playas más famosas del Mundo: Ipanema y Copacabana.

La zona sur refleja ese ambiente relajado, alegre, despreocupado… que siempre imaginaba que tendría Brasil. La playa es el eje que estructura el día a día de los cariocas. Nada más llegar me dejé llevar por esa filosofía: ponerse las chanclas y dejar todas las preocupaciones y el estrés atrás.

Las dos grandes playas rivalizan en extensión, en ambiente, en expresividad. Copacabana, con 4 kilómetros de longitud, mostraría la cara más animada, popular y familiar, mientras que Ipanema, solo con 1km menos de extensión,te ofrece una perspectiva más tranquila y chic que fue la que más me convenció.

Ipanema tiene para mí un encanto especial gracias al peculiar morro que remata la playa, ya en el área de Leblon, una imagen icónica de Río y uno de los paisajes que más he disfrutado en el viaje. Solo un par de días en Ipanema ya hacen efecto! Casi por arte de magia te empapas de distensión, relax y ganas de vivir! Me encantó ir descubriendo poco a poco todos sus secretos, callejeando, mezcándome con los cariocas y mimetizándome con sus costumbres…

Si llegas allí, estos son los MUSTS que no te debes perder…

• Plaza del General Osório, animada, divertida, auténtica…
  • En ella podrás disfrutar de la Feria Hippie de Ipanema, todos los Domingos hasta las 17h, un mercadillo muy muy recomendable en el que puedes encontrar auténticos tesoros, desde mapas cartográficos antiguos, todo tipo de productos artesanales, hasta puestecitos de escultores locales con tallas en madera impresionantes! Soy muy de mercadillos y éste es uno de los mejores que he visitado!. Al terminar, no te olvides de tomar uno de los increíbles zumos naturales que preparan al instante en los locales que rodean la plaza, yo tomé uno de piña (abacaxi allí), mmmm!!!

• También en la Plaza del General Ossório encontraréis PLACES & FOOD BITES interesantes:
  • Felice Caffé, http://www.felice.com.br, un lugar acogedor en el que disfrutar de una copa de vino, un cocktail o un buen café, en una terracita pequeña pero con encanto. Lo encontrarás en la Rua Gomes Carneiro, 30.
  • Zig Zag, https://www.facebook.com/Zig-Zag-Ipanema, un bar-cervecería super auténtico, lleno de gente local, en el que no existen los lujos pero donde podrás disfrutar como un carioca de sus costumbres: fundamental el frango a passarinho (una receta de pollo al ajillo buenísima!), acompañado de una cerveja Antarctica Original helada en garrafa o un Chopp de Brahma (cerveza local de grifo)
  • Aloha Jack, la terraza del Banana Jack, http://www.bananajack.com.br/alohajack, en la misma Plaza del General Ossório, abre a partir de los Martes. Es un lugar exótico, fresco, diferente, en el que podrás cenar comida Internacional con muy buen ambiente. Para los más atrevidos, el Chopp Banana Jack: cerveza de grifo con sabor a plátano!
  • Churrascaria Carretao, http://www.carretaochurrascaria.com.br, en Rua Visconde de Pirajá 112. Para disfrutar del mítico rodizio brasileño en un lugar histórico y con precios más que razonables.

• Otra plaza interesante, por el mercado de frutas, verduras y pescado de los Jueves, es ´la Praça da Nossa Senhora da Paz, frente a la parroquia del mismo nombre. Impresionante pescado, fresquísimo y muy barato!!

• Y he dejado para el final mi lugar preferido de Ipanema. Ha pasado a formar parte de mi lista de favoritos del mundo y para mí ha sido uno de los escenarios principales de este viaje: Palaphita Kitch  http://palaphitakitch.com.br..en pleno Lagoa. Las mejores vistas, el mejor ambiente, la mejor puesta de sol que he visto en Rio. Pasear por el Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas es romper con el bullicio y el ajetreo de la ciudad. Su contorno mide 7,5 kms. y es ideal para andar, montar en bici, o practicar todo tipo de deportes. Pero es a la caída de la tarde cuando la laguna muestra su imagen más impresionante, reflejando los diferentes matices de color de la puesta de sol. Palaphita Kitch es EL LUGAR para disfrutarla con todos los sentidos. Puede que el tiempo se detenga y sin darte cuenta hayan pasado tres horas y el cielo se haya osurecido, mientras contemplas el cielo caipirinha en mano desde sus selváticos bancos de madera y bambú. El lugar es rústico, selvático, amazónico. Música chill out y una buena carta de cocktails, algo para picar o cenar… Si vas a Rio no puedes dejar de visitarlo!

  

Como veis, Ipanema no deja indiferente y cuenta con muchas alternativas, pero no se puede terminar un post sobre Rio de Janeiro sin hacer una mención a Copacabana…

Copacabana refleja a la perfección el espíritu carioca. Es muy concurrida y alegre, y siempre hay gente practicando deporte en sus campos de arena o caminando por la orilla. MIles de vendedores ambulantes ofrecen los productos más populares… Matte Leao, Biscoito Globo, Queijo asado, Empada… Dicen que eres un auténtico carioca si en Copacabana tomas Matte Leao y lo acompañas de Biscote Globo, y doy fe de ello! Todos allí los tomaban a todas horas!

• Si vas a Copacabana, puedes darte el paseo hasta Leme, en el extremo opuesto a la Pedra do Arpoador, y visitar el Forte Duque de Caixas (Forte de Leme), con unas vistas muy bonitas de la Orla do Rio.

y MÁS ALLÁ DE RIO…

Hay dos lugares a un par de horas de Rio que, si tienes tiempo, puedes visitar

• Uno de ellos es Búzios, a 190kms. al este de Rio. Famoso por sus playas (tiene hasta 23!)y su animación nocturna, cuenta incluso con su propio estilo arquitectónico rústico y artesanal. Puedes alojarte en alguna de sus pousadas , y disfrutar del espíritu hiipie y chic de la localidad. • El otro es Angra Dos Reis. Dicen que tiene las mejores playas, de aguas cristalinas y caribeñas. Se encuentra a unos 150 kms. de Rio y cuenta con más de 360 islas! La mayor de ellas, Ilha Grande, donde puedes bucear y hacer snorkel si eres de los que atreves con las bajas temperaturas del agua! 😉

Cuando pienso en Brasil se me viene a la cabeza… Color, havaianas, alegría y comodidad.

Hasta en Invierno tienes buena temperatura, así que , además de bañadores, bikinis y chanclas (que te recomiendo no llevar y comprar allí, las havaianas están muy por debajo de la mitad de precio que en España!  http://www.havaianas.com.br , las de la foto de abajo son las que yo me compré)… lleva prendas ligeras y alguna chaqueta o jerséy para por las noches:

Rio de Janeiro, «Cidade Maravilhosa»… city of contrasts, of experiences, of breathless places…

Which was once the capital of the Empire is now home to over 8 million people, although it is difficult to count the exact amount due to the enormous concentration of population in favelas. The image of the city from the air before landing impress you:

When you think of Río as possible destination, you mixed feelings… There are countless forums on the Internet where the main themos are insecurity and high prices of the city. But it has so much to discoevr, so much richness, so much joy and kindness in its people, which is hard to resist and not to try. The proximity of the 2016 Olympics ultimately decided the choice to visit this year, so… let’s go to Rio!!

LThe first moments there, after a flight of 10 hours… are stressful!! We arrived in the afternoon but soon the sun sets in Rio, especially in August, there is winter. At the airport you will tackle thousand people offering transportation and travel to the city …Taxis are cheap and safe , you can choose between those that offer a fixed price and they charge for the race : you can opt for the latter without problems, real 60 and 30 minutes we reached the Zona Sul is where we were staying ( the fixed price made this same trip to Copacabana for 110 reais). Yo also have a Bus service ( popularly called » Frescao » , 2018 ) makes the same route by a much smaller amount , but yes, with a few stops in between.

Let’s be honest … this itinerary shows you the highlights and shadows of the city . Poverty and beauty , grandeur and misery of Rio de Janeiro and its inhabitants.

Final Destination: Arpoador , I can not be more pleased with the choice . Arpoador is the connection point between Ipanema and Copacabana , marked by Pedra do Arpoador , an icon to watch the most iconic sun of Ipanema with Dois Irmaos nose.

Arpoador is a lively , bustling , eclectic neighborhood , where you can find surfers , athletes, hawkers on the beach, bike tourists strolling up personal trainers !

The statue of Tom Jobim , the mythical musician with Vinicius de Moraes song «La garota de Ipanema» , presides over the seawall near the park of the same name . In your plate , a poem which , curiously , belonging to another of his songs: «Mi alma canta. Veo Rio de Janeiro»

 

What to do in Rio? there are many options depending on the plan you feel like ….

CENTER

If only an express tour, city center worth . iN reality is not the center of the city … a mix of large office buildings , monuments, streets, buildings dilapidated facades and windows decadent …I will not detail all the hot spots of the city and tourist resort to clichés or MARCANA Sambadrome , but i will share with you curiosities that caught my attention…

• A sample of what may be surprising that the city is its cathedral : architecturally striking for being a conical construction of windows and crowded inside. If you raise your view , you can admire the large cross that crowns the building : each of its four corners leave the four vertical windows that are changing effects and spectacular natural light.

• With a picturesque look, do not miss the Escadaria Selarón . Caught my attention the origin , and above all, the essence of a living work that evolves and changed over time. They say that the author, Jorge Selarón , Chilean and inveterate traveler , wanted to reward the Brazilian people so well that welcomed him and take the ladder with the colors of the Brazilian flag. But when almost had finished his work , he discovered a tile store and began to create a colorful and complex mosaic that is still completing contributions from other travelers and individuals from all over the world . Today, more than 2000 tiles make up the work , and if you visit it, you feel invaded by their colorful , joy and vivacity. It is almost impossible to pay attention to every detail, but if you will stop for a while to look around you are going to find many surprises !!
• The Lapa Arches are also mandatory in the visit. The famous Carioca aqueduct which was then used as viaduct for Bodinho , a tram linking downtown Rio to the Santa Teresa , now houses many bars and terraces that from 20h are crammed with people and bustle . True, it is an area in which caution be outstanding safety issues, and you better not ever get out of the enclosure of the area to avoid problems, but is a vivid and lively place in which to enjoy the tune and Brazilian samba. • It seems that lately it has become fashionable to visit by any of the favelas of Rio tourists. Even agencies offer and spend a day , eat breakfast , sleep … in them. Rio has thousands of settlements that have become another of the postcards of the city . The most popular : Rocinha , Vidigal and Santa Marta. A curiosity , his favela name comes from a plant growing in the hills : when the inhabitants of the city went up to them by fruit or flowers by saying that came from the favelas , and there was the name 

SUGAR LOAF AND CRISTO DEL CORCOVADO

Essential and unmissable . I do not know which one is more impressive !!! If I had to choose, I think I would stay with the feeling of seeing the city at night from the Sugar Loaf …

• The statue of Christ the Redeemer is crowning the nose of Corcovado , it is 38 meters high , is located 710 meters above sea level and is part of the new 7 Wonders of the World . • I arrived at the Sugar Loaf at sunset . And I can not be happier to have been there when the city begins to show all its lights and the sky darkens . If you choose to get into the Bondinho do Pao de Acucar , you need to complete two sections of funicular ( Morro da Urca and Sugar Loaf Mountain ) and will cost 62 reais , but in return you will find a 360 degrees , 396 meters above sea level, the lake , bays , beaches , lit at night … amazing !. If you go there, plan it without stress : allow yourself some time to sit on the panoramic bar Pao de Acucar Gourmet enclave and enjoy a coffee, a caipirinha , or even a açai . Worth (much) it.

ZONA SUL 

It was the meeting point: I always knew I wanted everything to enjoy some of the most famous beaches in the world : Ipanema and Copacabana.

The south reflects the relaxed, cheerful, carefree … that always imagined that Brazil would be . The beach is the axis that structures the day of Cariocas . Upon arrival I went with that philosophy , put on flip flops and leave all the worries and stress behind.

The two great beaches rivaling in size, in environment, in expressiveness. Copacabana , with 4 kilometers, show the most lively , popular and familiar face , while Ipanema , only with less 1km extension provides a quieter, elegant and chic perspective was the most convinced me .

Ipanema has a special charm thanks to the peculiar nose that ends the beach and in the area of Leblon , an iconic image of Rio and one of my most enjoyable scenery on the trip. Just a couple of days and take effect in Ipanema ! Almost magically you get soaked detente , relaxation and zest for life ! I loved going gradually discovering all his secrets , loitering , mixing myself with the locals and their customs …

If you visit Ipanema , these are the musts that you should not miss …

• General Osório Square,  animates, funny, genuine…
  • Here you can enjoy the Hippie Fair in Ipanema , every Sunday until 17h, a very highly recommended market where you can find real treasures , from , old cartographic maps all kinds of handicrafts, to stalls of local sculptors carvings impressive wood! I am a flea market lover, and this is one of the best I have visited !. When finished, do not forget to take one of the amazing natural juices that prepare instantly local surrounding the square , I took one of pineapple ( abacaxi there) mmmm !!!

• Also in General Ossório Square you will find interesting PLACES & FOOD BITES:
  • Felice Caffé, http://www.felice.com.br, a cozy place to enjoy a glass of wine, a cocktail or coffee in a small but charming terrace . Find it at Rua Gomes Carneiro, 30.
  • Zig Zag, https://www.facebook.com/Zig-Zag-Ipanema, a super authentic bar -brewery, full of locals , which are not luxuries but where you can enjoy as a carioca their habits : try the frango passarinho (a tasty recipe of  garlic chicken ), accompanied by an iced Antarctica Original beer or Brahma Chopp (local beer on tap )
  • Aloha Jack, Banana Jack’s outside terrace, http://www.bananajack.com.br/alohajack, just in the middle of General Ossório Square, opens from Tuesday. It is an exotic , fresh , different, place where you can dine International food with great atmosphere. For the more daring , the Chopp Banana Jack : tap beer flavored banana!
  • Churrascaria Carretao, http://www.carretaochurrascaria.com.br, Rua Visconde de Pirajá 112. To enjoy the legendary Brazilian rodizio in a historic location and reasonable prices .

• Otra interesting square, with a market of fruits, vegetables and fish on Thursdays , is  Praça da Nossa Senhora da Paz , in front of the parish of the same name. Impressive fish, very fresh and very cheap !!

• And I left for last my favorite place in Ipanema. It has become part of my favorites in the world and for me has been one of the main stages of this journey: Palaphita Kitch,  http: //palaphitakitch.com.br, in Lagoa. The best views, the best atmosphere, the best sunset I have seen in Rio. Walking around the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas means breaking with the hustle and bustle of the city. Its outline measures 7.5 kms. and it is ideal for walking, cycling, or practice all kinds of sports. But it is at dusk when the lagoon shows its most impressive image, reflecting the different shades of color of the sunset. Palaphita Kitch is the place to enjoy with all senses. Time may stop without realizing three hours have passed and the sky has osurecido, while contemplating the sky caipirinha in hand from their banks wooden and bamboo jungle. The place is rustic, jungle, Amazon. Chill out music and a good wine cocktails, nibbles or dinner … If you go to Rio you can not miss a visit!

  

You see, Ipanema is not indifferent and has many options, but I can not finish a post on Rio de Janeiro without mentioning Copacabana …

Copacabana perfectly reflects the Carioca spirit . It’s busy and cheerful, and there are always people playing sport in their fields of sand or walking along the shore . Thousands of vendors offer the most popular products … Matte Leao , Biscoito Globo, roasted cheese, Empada … They say you’re a true Carioca if Copacabana takes Matte Leao and accompany of Biscoito Globo, and I can vouch for it! Everyone there took them all the time !

• If you go to Copacabana , you can give the walk to Leme , on the opposite end of the Pedra do Arpoador , and visit the Forte Duque de Caxias ( Fort of Leme ), with superb views of the Orla do Rio

BEYOND RIO…

There are two places within a couple of hours from Rio , if you have time enough, both of them are nice to visit

• One of them  is Búzios, 190kms . east of Rio . Famous for its beaches ( has up to 23! ) and the evening entertainment, even has its own rustic architectural style and craftsmanship . You can stay in one of its pousadas and enjoy Hiipie and chic spirit of the town . • The other one is Angra Dos Reis . They say it has the best beaches, and crystal Caribbean waters . It is about 150 kms . Rio and has more than 360 islands! Most of them , Ilha Grande where you can dive and snorkel if you are someone who dare with low water temperatures ! ; )

To go goodbye , just leave you information on accommodations in the South Zone of Rio and some looks interesting …

• Orla Copacabana Hotel: good value and a terrace with a spectacular view of Copacabana ! http://www.orlahotel.com.br
  
• Arpoador Inn Hotel: simple, easy..you could have breakfast in a cozy lounge with terrace overlooking the Arpoador beach, http://arpoadorinn.com.br
  
• Everest Rio Hotel, http://www.everest.com.br, a short walf from Ipanema Beach
• Hotel Fasano Ipanema (http://www.fasano.com.br) very expensive and luxury,  only for the privileged.

When I think of Brazil comes to my head … Color , havaianas , joy and comfort

Therefore, I have prepared a couple of looks relaxed for a day on the beaches … even in winter you have good temperature, so in addition to swimsuits , bikinis and thongs ( I recommend you go and not buy there, Havaianas are well below half price than in Spain ! http://www.havaianas.com.br , the image below shows the ones I bought there)…

Bring light clothes and a jacket or sweater for the evenings
